In 2013, Suzette Franck, one of the original cohosts of the WPwatercooler, made a trac ticket suggesting the WordPress project “Add a ‘Contribute' tab to the About page” of the WordPress Dashboard. After some discussion, the ticket fell dormant. Ten years later, WordPress core contributor Olga Glekler revived the still-relevant ticket, and championed the cause throughout the MakeWP community. In WordPress 6.3, that ten-year old idea was finally realized, with the launch of the brand-new “Get Involved” tab. And in this episode, we will be joined by both Suzette and Olga to talk about the journey of ten-year ticket! The WordPress Dashboard is a typical GUI with specific use-cases in mind. CLI is way more expressiveIt's also a much more scalable solution because you're not dealing with the assumptions of Core developers. You can create anything you'd like. When you're running a Dashboard solution, everything is a standard web request. With WP-CLI, you run the commands through shell. It doesn't just allow easy scripting, but for a normalization layer. If you have a common set of tools and settings you use for each site, WP-CLI can normalize the installation process for you. You can start off simple, updating Core, themes, and plugins, and then move on to more complicated actions. There are very powerful commands to do imports and exports, combined with search and replace. This allows you to have fully automated site migrations.WordPress has been changing rapidly, and WP-CLI is trying to keep up. They're working to make sure everything works with Gutenberg. They're also working to ensure WP Scaffold, a feature that allows you to spin up new plugins and themes, works properly. Any plugin can integrate and support WP-CLI by adding their own set of commands. For example, if you use a Forms plugin to gather submissions, you can use WP-CLI (integrated with that forms plugin) to gather all of the data, and create beautiful reports and charts. The possibilities are endless with WP-CLI. It's really the most uninhibited version of WordPress you can get.

EP8: Ask Zane - Updating Those Pesky WordPress Plugins

The Tech Savvy Nonprofit

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2019 20:13

In this episode, we're talking with Zane DeVault, lead developer at co-founder of Tiny Blue Sky about updating WordPress plugins. Zane explains why plugins need to be updated regularly on WordPress websites, what to do if something goes wrong during the update, the importance of backing up your website and some overall website maintenance best practices. What is a WordPress plugin? If you currently have a WordPress site, you might know that some of its functionality is made possible by plugins. A plugin is a bit of software that can be added to your site to do a thing that your site couldn't do before. For instance, let's say you want to have an online store but your current site doesn't include ecommerce. A plugin can be added to your site, and voila, you're in business. How to choose a plugin? There are currently 54,737 plugins available to extend your website experience. And that number is growing all the time. So how do you know which one to chose? Zane recommends starting within your current site. On your WordPress Dashboard, hover over Plugins and select Add New. The plugins here have been vetted by WordPress. From there, look for Plugins that have been installed on lots of other sites and check for high ratings. Updating plugins: when, why and how Like most software, plugins require updates from time-to-time to keep them secure and working as they were intended. You should update your plugins—it's a good thing. Before you update, back up your site and your database. Not sure how? Check with your host (Zane recommends WPEngine and Flywheel. At Tiny Blue Sky, we use WPEngine and love that it automatically backs up our site daily). If your host doesn't make backing up easy for you, there are plugins that can help. Zane references Backup Buddy, Updraft, VaultPress and Duplicator. Once your site is backed up, update the plugins and then give your site a quick once over to ensure everything is in working order. If for some reason something isn't working properly, pat yourself on the back for having a back up. Contact your host or developer and ask them to help you restore your site. Zane recommends updating your plugins every week. This ensures you won't miss a security update, unintentionally making your site vulnerable to an attack.  What happens if you don’t update your plugins? There's a chance that nothing will happen. That said, you're also leaving your site open to the possibility of an attack. If you're hacked you're site could go down or become associated spam activity, which will negatively impact your Google search results. Have something to ask Zane? If you have a question for Zane. let us know. We may use it in a future episode of the Tech Savvy Nonprofit Podcast. Send your question to zane@tinybluesky.com.

Data Driven Daily Tip 224. Attention marketers and small business owners. If you own an eCommerce website and are selling products regularly online, you need to have eCommerce tracking set up in Google Analytics. This is typically super simple to do with Google Analytics, but sometimes there's some additional coding required on your website so that the data flows properly. Luckily, for WordPress Woocommerce merchants and website owners, this process is made super simple by the WooCommerce Google Analytics Integration Plug-in. Follow the steps outlined in this video and you'll be good to go to start tracking your transactions, revenue and eCommerce conversion rate in Google Analytics. You want this set up correctly because it will also allow you to make Data Driven Marketing decisions related to how many transactions and purchases your marketing efforts are generating for you, such as Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Email Marketing and SEO. The Step-by-Step Process Outlined In The Video Is Below, Thanks To OM4.com.au. Go to Google Analytics, click on your website, then click on Admin, View, Ecommerce Settings then configure the following: Set “Enable Ecommerce” to On. It's OK for Graphic Designers To Ask For Help - RD045

Resourceful Designer

It's OK for Graphic Designers To Ask For Help What's the one thing every business person struggles with, regardless of their occupation? The answer is time. No matter how hard you work there just never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything done. So what's the solution? Ask for help. You see, the problem is time is finite. Once it's gone, it's gone. So you have to make the best use of the time you have. This applies to life in general but in this week's Resourceful Designer podcast, I'm talking about how it applies to your graphic design business. About all the time you spend struggling or fiddling with client projects as well as other aspects of your business. You'll never get that time back. So why waste it in the first place when all you have to do is ask for help with it.? I said I was going to talk about your business, however, there are things you could ask for help with that are not necessarily related to your business, but can still help benefit your business. Consider getting help with things like housekeeping, childcare and yard maintenance. Even having your groceries delivered to you. By hiring someone else to complete these tasks, you are freeing up your time for more productive things. Why would you hire someone to do all these simple things you could easily do yourself? Efficiency, that's why. Think about it. A housekeeper or yard worker may charge you $10-$20/hr. You, on the other hand, make up to 5 times that amount when designing. So why not use your time to do the work you get paid higher for, and hire someone else to use their time to do the other work. Ask For Help For Your Graphic Design Business One of the easiest ways to ask for help is to outsource the things you are not capable of or the things you really shouldn't be doing. This will free up your time to do the things only you can and should be doing. There are certain parts of your business you can't or shouldn't outsource. When it comes to promoting your business, designing for your clients or networking you need to be front and centre. But things like invoicing, bookkeeping and banking can all be handled by someone else. Ask for help in these areas. Spend money to save money. An old adage in business is that you need to spend money in order to make money. Don't be afraid to spend money to hire people to help you. It may cut into your profits on that job. But it will free up your time to work on other projects. Meaning you'll be increasing your overall profit because your business will be completing two projects at the same time. Where To Ask For Help. Build a community. The best place to ask for help is in a community you've built for yourself. Collect a list of Writers, developers, illustrators, proofreaders, UI experts, social media experts etc. that you can call upon whenever you have need of them. You can find these people locally, at meetups, in Facebook Groups, on sites like UpWork, or ask fellow designers for recommendations. Don't feel guilty if you ask for help Nobody can do everything. We're not expected to. That's why agencies are made up of teams. If there's a task that one person can't do, then another team member is called in to handle it. Just because you work by yourself doesn't mean you have to suffer. There's no reason to feel guilty if you ask for help. Any good business owner, even those running fortune 500 companies will tell you that to run a highly profitable business you need to surround yourself with competent people. People who support you in the areas you're not proficient in. You may not be running an agency, but there's no reason you can't have your own team. Be confident in the skills and abilities you bring to the table and focus on them. Ask for help from others and let them focus on the skills and abilities they bring to the table. Together you have a much higher chance of succeeding. Don't fall into the procrastination rut If you find yourself procrastinating on certain jobs, it may be a sign that you should ask for help. Procrastination is often a sign of not having confidence in your own abilities. It can occur because you are seeking perfection that you don't know if you're capable of, or you simply have a fear of failure. Asking for help can overcome these hurdles. Look at your past accomplishments to build your confidence in what you’re capable of and focus on that. Take stock of your unique abilities, whatever it is you bring to the table. And then seek unique abilities in others to help you accomplish your goals. Remember, you are the only you there is. Nobody else can be you. So Be you and do the things you are good at. Then ask for help and let others do what they're good at in order to help you. Do you ask for help when it's needed? There are many tasks in a graphic design business where a designer can ask for help. What are some of the ones you've reached out for? Leave a comment for this episode. 003: How To Start A Successful Blog

How To Start A Successful Blog Today The blogging space is full of what I call “Noise.” This just means there are a lot of blogs out there, and very few are valuable. I’m not trying to be harsh it’s just the truth. If you want your blog to be successful, you are going to have to work extremely hard and have patience. If you have GREAT content and a consistent posting schedule you will be fine. There are a few things you can do the “right way” when you are starting your blog that will help you get a head start on your competition. Below is a list of things that you can do as a new blogger, that will get you on the right path. 1. A Domain Name That Looks Professional If you haven’t started your blog yet, I highly suggest you get a domain and hosting package from a web hosting service such as Bluehost. It is simple to build your blog with their built-in one-click WordPress install tool. In as little as 5 minutes you can have a FREE professional looking domain name and a hosting service.  You don’t want you URL to look like this — www.yourblog.weebly.com You WANT it to look like this — www.yourblog.com Free services such as WordPress native blogs and the Blogger platforms are great, BUT they have their branding in your domain name. If you are serious about building your brand with a blog, you must have a specific domain name. If you want a successful blog, this is important. 2. Update Your Permalink Structure When you are creating a new blog post the permalink is the URL that your blog creates after you publish. It will be set as something ugly that looks like this: http://www.onlinebusinessrealm.com/*&$=786 Not what you want to be shown when people go to your specific posts. Before writing your first blog post go to the Settings tab in your WordPress Dashboard and navigate to the Permalink section. Under Settings —> Permalinks change the structure to be “Post Name”. 3. Change The Favicon For Your Website A favicon is a 16X16 icon that shows up next to your URL in the browser, and it also shows up next to the tabs or when you create a bookmark for the site. If you choose not to upload a favicon, it will show up as blank or some ugly little globe object from WordPress. Yes, this is just a small thing, BUT it all adds up, and it will make a difference in making your site stand out. To update your favicon, you will nee a 16 X 16 pixel icon (formatted as favicon.ico). If you are a WordPress user, most of your templates will have a section to upload the favicon directly from the appearance tab. Go to favicon.cc to create a favicon that will work on any platform. 4. Don’t Go Crazy With Plugins and Widgets One of the best things about WordPress is how easy and fun it is to customize your site using plugins and widgets. I would recommend you do some research on which plugins would best suit the needs of your site before installing any. Here are a few listed below that I recommend for all blogs/website. WordPress SEO by Yoast — A fantastic SEO plugin that helps you optimize each post for search. BackupBuddy — The most user-friendly site backup plugin for WordPress that can back your site up automatically. W3 Total Cache — The speed of your site is IMPORTANT, and this plugin will optimize your site to run as fast as it can. WPForms — WPForms is the most beginner friendly contact form plugin for WordPress. OptinMonster — A simple to use lead generation plugin. (Free). OptinSkin— A more in-depth lead generation plugin. (Premium). Disqus — A WordPress commenting system. Disqus Looks much better than the native WordPress systems. Floating Social Bar — The best social media sharing plugin for WordPress. It is, of course, subjective to what are the best plugins for the job, but this is a great list to get you started. Just make sure you have a backup plugin, cache plugin, and some type of SEO plugin. 5. Format Your Blog Posts  One thing I see newer bloggers do is to create posts with great content, BUT they are no fun to read. Make sure you are breaking your content up appropriately with headings and pictures. Your posts should include headings, subheadings, bold keywords, italics, lists, white space, pictures, diagrams, charts, infographics, and links. It will take some practice, BUT if you can learn how to construct an eye-catching blog post, you will be ahead of most people already. 6. Be Original The last thing I’m going to touch on is just being “you”. Originality is key in the online blogging space, and you need to find what makes you different. Yes, there will be other blogs out there about the same thing you want to write about. Question: Why is your blog any different? The Answer: Because of YOU. You are what makes your blog different; it’s your perspective on the topic, your creativity, the value that you add. Here are some other tips to get you started: Be Honest — Your blog needs to be real – it needs to FEEL real if you want people to read it. You don’t have to be a professional writer, just come at each post as if you were speaking with the individual who is reading it. Transparency — Always be honest, and be transparent when it adds value to what you’re writing. Let your audience in your world when it could bring them value. Time — After you have started your blog, you’ll learn that blogging takes a log of time. Once you have your design set up, don’t tweak it too much; spend the time on your writing. Social Media — In the beginning, the only person reading your blog will most likely be your mom. I recommend using Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Pinterest and Instagram, among other social networks that fit your niche. BUT don’t get so caught up in this that you have no time to write good content. There has to be balance. Ignore Negative Criticism and Trolls — This may come as a shock to you BUT there are going to be people out there that do not like what you are creating, and they are going to be mean to you. This sounds juvenile, but it’s so true. You have to learn to keep your head down and focus on the people who are positive about what you are doing. Pay the trolls no mind; your site is not for them. Delete their comment and move on. In closing just Be Interesting. Write awesome content. Especially if you want people to share it with others.
