In this episode, guest Shaka Senghor shares his inspiring story from incarceration to becoming a two times bestselling author, influencer and one of Oprah's “SuperSoul 100” – teaching lessons of redemption and vulnerability to the masses. He grew up spending 19 years in prison, seven of them in solitary confinement. Through reflection and writing, he later came to understand his story of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).  At age 17, he was shot multiple times, and also has two brothers who were shot, one of whom ended up paralyzed.  At the same time, he takes full responsibility for the death of another, which sent him to prison. Shaka is grateful for the many “incredible mentors” who believed in him, and offered suggested readings for moving forward. Topics covered in this interview: The reflective time in solitary confinement that helped him create his first bestseller, Writing My Wrongs, Life, Death, and Redemption in an American Prisonhttps://www.amazon.com/Writing-My-Wrongs-Redemption-American/dp/1101907312. How being a father impacted his second book that just came out in January, 2022, Letters to the Sons of Society: A Father's Invitation to Love, Honesty, and Freedom https://www.amazon.com/Letters-Sons-Society-Fathers-Invitation/dp/059323801X. Here is a review of that book by The Chicago Tribune: “If you want to peer into a heart, if you want a story of brokenness and healing and fury and redemption and humanity, if you want to envision a different, better way forward, Senghor's letters are a beautiful place to begin.” Changing the narrative for Black men, into worthiness, beyond being a provider and protector.  Dr. Alfiee also noted research showing that Black men are the single most present ethnic group to their children even when they are the non-custodial parent.  Shaka being “an authentic survivor,” loved up by “brothers” who saw value in him in prison, and how he now mentors other “young brothers”--living what he talks about, and challenges them while winning.  Shaka shares three ways to instill a greater sense of self-love: Journaling, and start by asking: “How did I get here, to this point in life?” ”Meditate to get it straight,” which can be “horrifying” at first to sit with one's self. Personal affirmations, to think into existence what you desire. Running  “a unicorn startup,” that went from $0 revenue to $7 billion valuation in 20 months, by helping build culture in corporations. Closing words, his mantra, which he contributed to in the song “Composure” by Nas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-gYa5dk-8M): “Keep your composure. And believe in the magic of who we are. 'Cause what you believe is everything. And what someone believes about you, is nothing. Many of our luminaries on At the End of the Tunnel have become inspirations after some very dark times, and today's guest is no different. Shaka Senghor spent 19 years in prison, with a total of seven years in solitary confinement. From growing up in a loving, multicultural neighborhood, and being an honor-role student, Shaka struggled as a teenager, and ended up in the dark underworld of crack cocaine, where he was beaten, abused, shot, and ultimately convicted of murder. To keep moving forward during his incarceration, Shaka turned to literature and writing. His first published book, Writing My Wrongs was written in just 30 days and was the catalyst to his meteoric career.Tune in to hear the breadcrumbs throughout Shaka's life that gave him the confidence to write, and how his prison manuscripts touched the lives of other inmates. Shaka describes the challenges he faced trying to write in prison, and the relentless hustling he did to continue as a writer after he was paroled. We discover the importance of manifesting (and backing it up with hard work), and how being true to yourself allows others to relate to you. We find out what his latest book, Letters to the Sons of Society, means to him, and why he chose to introduce the book with a story about his father and some sneakers. Join us in this inspiring episode, with a true luminary in this tumultuous time.

In Episode 05 of Real Estate Rewind, David Serpa, Marine veteran, realtor, entrepreneur, and author, speaks with host, Nick Baldwin. David Serpa discusses why he left his very successful real estate team and how he reframed the way he views business after addressing personal trauma. He shares how his thoughts on real estate have evolved since writing his first book.  Episode Highlights: David Serpa and Nick Baldwin are both avid readers. They recommend many books in a variety of genres. David decided to become a realtor after having a negative experience buying his first home. He felt he could help Marines like him buy homes.David’s first priority was to put service first and it worked. In David’s second month as a realtor, he made $35,000 and closed seven escrows. At one point David Serpa made over $600k a year. But, at that time he suffered from stress, high blood pressure, and anxiety. He ultimately decided that he needed to pursue a more balanced approach.Real estate became a special interest that became too much for David, and everyone around him. Nick Baldwin remembers a funny video David made about affirmations. He uses this as an example of how much David has grown since his early days in the industry. Why are we seeing lots of veterans get into the real estate business?Nick Baldwin asks about how David’s autism diagnosis has helped him.David Serpa talks about the evolution he underwent from writing The Machine Gunner’s Guide to Real Estate vs. his new project, Zen Business.Zen Business is about releasing the expectations of a peer group and a business plan. It’s easy to feel “less than” in the real estate industry. Nick Baldwin and David discuss the dangers of comparison. We spend a lot of time being told that we’re not good enough and that we’re broken. We can reject those messages. When David walked away from his team, he was at a point where he was pushing some people way beyond their comfort level. He stepped away from the industry and sought help.David Serpa tells us about his band, Prometheus and Mama Fancy with The Boot Band. You are enough. Everything is ok.  3 Key Points:   David Serpa left his very successful real estate team when he realized that his life was out of balance and he was no longer a leader worth following.    It’s easy to feel “less than” in the real estate industry. Many times the people who are preaching the loudest are leading lives that are out of balance. You can choose to release expectations and decide that you are enough now. Resources Mentioned:Nick Baldwin: LinkedIn  Facebook  Findessexandunionhomes.comDavid Serpa on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTubeThe Machine Gunner’s Guide to Real Estate: Accuracy by Volume (book)All the World’s a Stage: Unmasking Asperger’s Syndrome (book)David Serpa’s funny affirmation video Prometheus and Mama Fancy with The Boot Band Outwitting the Devil (book)Of Mice and Men (book)Gates of Fire (book)A New Earth (book)Writing My Wrongs (book)The Alchemist (book)Midnight in Chernobyl (book)Chernobyl miniseries on HBO (trailer)The Eye of the World (book)I’ll Be There For You (book)The Millionaire Real Estate Agent (book)Boulder Crest Retreat

Pops is a documentary web series about African American men facing the toughest challenge of their lives: becoming good fathers. Pops addresses the reality and challenges of 21st-century parenthood for African American fathers. The media narrative of the deadbeat black father is generally accepted as a fact of life for African American children. Buried beneath these assumptions are the facts of black fatherhood that dispel some of those stereotypes. The web series follows the parenting experiences of Shaka Senghor, LaGuardia Cross, and the Stroman-Iniss family during the course of a year. Each father explores the universal themes of responsibility, nurturing and love. They differ in personalities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and struggles but share the collective experience of fatherhood. Their stories serve to reflect the reality of black fathers in America. Shot in verité documentary style rich with raw, intimate moments, each character reveals what fatherhood looks like in their world.
