    Halim Flowers: Roaming Free After 22 Years

    Chris Wilson: How I Escaped From a Life Sentence in Prison

    Before the age of 17 Chris Wilson's mother was raped by a police officer. His father was murdered.  His cousin was killed in front of him. At 17-years old, Chris was sentenced to life in prison for taking a person's life.  When he was 19 he decided to create a master plan for his life, and that master plan lead to his early release from prison, a book, serial entrepreneurship, and becoming an internationally sought after artist.     Naquasia & Turquoise: Honor Rolls and Thriving Beyond Trauma

    Darren Mack: Return of the Mack

    If you’ve been to Miami and haven’t heard of Valencia Gunder, you haven’t been to Miami. Known as Vee, she talks about going to jail for college tuition.  That’s right college tuition! She raises awareness about being detained and not having access to feminine hygiene products.  Valencia is modern day Fannie Lou Hamer, tackling everything from climate change to gun violence.  She bares it all in this episode--even teasing about a political run in 2020...Vee has our vote!     Coss Marte: The Business of Physical Health and Justice

    Coss Marte is born and raised LES. As a kid he used to collect cans and turn them into Bodegas to collect nickels. He started selling drugs at 13, and quickly became one of the largest drug dealers in NYC within six years, running a $2 million business. When he went to prison a doctor told him he would be dead within 5 years (he had a 7 year sentence). He was 5' 8" and 230 pounds, he had not been walking or leading an active lifestyle. He committed to making it out, and lost 70 lbs in six months! He also speaks openly about time in solitary confinement (see both TED Talks on Youtube -2014 and 2016). Coss won a "SharkTank" like competition after pitching his idea of a fitness business that used his workouts from inside. He was awarded startup funds, and is now the owner, and an active coach, at ConBody Fitness in LES.     Frankie Guzman is an attorney at the National Center for Youth Law working to eliminate prosecuting and incarcerating children in California’s adult criminal justice system, and advocating for alternative sentencing and local treatment. Guzman, imprisoned as a teen, went on to become a community college transfer student to UC Berkeley and graduate of UCLA School of Law with a specialization in Public Interest Law and Policy.     Khalil Cumberbatch: Father. Advocate. Collaborator.

    Khalil Cumberbatch is the Manager of Trainings at JustLeadership USA, Columbia University Lecturer, husband and father to two young daughters. Khalil was sentenced to 11 years in New York State for a robbery in his early 20's. In this episode Khalil goes from telling us about his journey from Guyana as a child, to growing up in Southside, Jamaica, Queens,  to his hostility with his father, to his love for his daughters. Khalil exhibits tremendous insight into his experiences.     After his incarceration, Khalil was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and faced deportation back to Guyana one week before he was to graduate from a Master Degree in Social Work.     Renata Hill: Raising Awareness for the LGBTQ Community

    Renata Hill, a native of New Jersey, spent three years in prison in New York  literally for being the survivor of sexual harassment. Her story, along with Venice Brown, Terrain Dandridge, and Patreese Johnson is featured in the documentary, Out in the Night .  Renata shares experiences about her life that, according her,  she's never shared before. Her stories of family strife, abuse, systemic disregard for the lives of young Black girls, and utter demonization of the LGBTQ community are enraging and inspiring.     Andrea C. James, a Roxbury, Boston native was sentenced to 18-months in prison for a white-collar crime. A lawyer prior to her incarceration, Andrea is an author and national advocate for the rights of women impacted by incarceration.  Andrea drips passion for this cause in this episode.     In this episode, Hernan Carvente speaks about developing a drinking habit at the age of 8-years old as a response to domestic violence, to joining a gang, to going to prison at 16, to being a national leader in juvenile justice reform. And, he identifies as a feminist, y'all!!!! Yes!   Hernan is a Program Analyst at the Vera Institute of Justice, where he works on program development, improving conditions of confinement, and incorporating youth and family partnerships in facility-based and statewide juvenile justice policy reform. Mr. Carvente has conducted trainings with policymakers, researchers, students, and professionals in probation, child welfare, juvenile justice and corrections. His passion for reform stems from his own personal experiences in the juvenile justice system.
