We also discuss our approaches to the important question of what things actually belong on a calendar versus what should go into our trusted task management systems. Finally, we look at how sharing a calendar requires one to define even more clearly what is really happening and what is not. XOXO Festival, Portland, Oregon Fantastical BusyCal WhenWorks

This week Jesse and Kevin talk about exploiting workers, protecting your privacy, weird copyright situations, movies and tv shows that are objectively bad, and some that are obviously good. Jesse updated how he does the links, so Kevin has even less work to do in describing the episode for these notes. Did you know Jesse edits each episode? And writes the Links section you always find below these notes? All Kevin does is upload the episodes, writes these short blurbs and manages the hosting. And I guess they both keep showing up to talk to each other. So that's where they share the load some. Also Jesse and Kevin both write things in the third person when writing about the episodes. I guess it gives everything a sense of being a part of something larger. Like if they had an unpaid intern who did all the grunt work, and Jesse and Kevin just show up. But no. It's just Jesse and Kevin, doing everything. Links Kevin blocks ads with EFF's Privacy Badger. Jesse blocks ads with Ghostery and 1Blocker. The DECK and Project Wonderful are cool ad platforms. Mozilla makes a dumb ad supported browser called Brave. Sarah Jeong gave a great talk about ad blocking at the XOXO Festival. The Toast was a cool website that Hillary Clinton wrote for once. You should not do creative work "for exposure". Jesse is divorced, but his wedding photographers were incredible. Stan Lee doesn't own the copyright for his Marvel characters. Kevin has opinions on copyright that might make Jesse's sister mad. A monkey took a selfie and the copyright got complicated. wikiHow artwork is terrifying and makes for a fun game. Cookin Good was a bizarre cooking show on Austin's public access. The Room and Birdemic: Shock and Terror are good bad movies. Kevin thinks Dude, Where's My Car? is a good movie. (It's not.) Trekkies made fun Star Trek fans. The Middle-Earth canon is complicated. Movies with Mikey made Kevin and Jesse cry about Serenity. Sci-fi universes get weird when authors die. Kevin is currently reading Fluency by Jennifer Foehner Wells and March by John Lewis. Jesse thinks Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are too attractive to be in space. Jesse finished watching Battlestar Galactica, Luke Cage, and The Crown; is now rewatching Parks and Rec. Parks and Rec "grew the beard" when Rob Lowe and Adam Scott showed up. Unprepared officially recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign entity. Kevin lays out the timeline of the Star Trek TV shows. Bryan Fuller is no longer involved in the Star Trek: Discovery.

In about two weeks, Andy McMillan and Andy Baio will welcome several hundred makers what may be the last XOXO Festival. The Fest is a mere four years old, but during that short run it became a premier destination for discussing creativity and technology. Over the years, attendees included a huge range of creatives: blog stars from Boing Boing, DJ sensation Dan Deacon, design fiends of all stripes, the makers of Cards Against Humanity, and social thinkers like feminist critic Anita Sarkeesian, as well as design fiends, podcasters, comic creators, game developers, and so many more. But despite strong attendance (they end up turning away hundreds of would-be attendees each year) the Andys are hitting the brakes. There will not be a XOXO festival in 2017. We talk with Baio and McMillan about what's up at the Outpost, and where the Fest has taken them.

XOXO's Pulls Plug on the Festival, But Plugs in a New Workspace - 1:15Over the last four years, the XOXO Festival has become a premier destination for the intersection of creativity and technology, drawing blog stars, DJ sensations and creators like the folks behind Cards Against Humanity, while regularly turning away hundreds of would-be attendees each year. Yet co-founders Andy Baio and Andy McMillan are hitting the brakes. There will not be a XOXO festival in 2017. That’s not to say they will never bring it back. But the Andys say that, after four years of listening to talk about methods, markets, practice and process, they decided to dedicate themselves instead to their new, pay-what-you-can co-work space called XOXO Outpost.Kelly Pratt to Kick Off TBA with Hundreds of Horns - 7:00After living a nomadic life for 21 years, the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art finally has a new home in northeast Portland. And to celebrate, they're turning over the opening night event to the multi-instrumentalist Kelly Pratt, who has played and arranged for everyone from Beirut to Arcade Fire to David Byrne. Pratt is writing music for hundreds of brass instruments, amateur and professional alike, with the plan to splatter the walls with music in an event called "Fanfare: Birth>Rebirth."Central Oregon Loses Its Arts Central - 17:40A forty year tradition of arts education and advocacy has run aground in Bend. Arts Central, which brought classes, advocacy, and more to thousands of Central Oregon residents, announced on Aug. 19 that it was closing all operations, including the popular classes at Art Station, leaving us to ask: is anyone steering the region’s arts scene? Can Ages and Ages Make Songs About Earthquakes and the End of Civilization Fun? Yes, They Can. - 21:55The band Ages and Ages is infectious. All those hand claps and group harmonies have made songs like "No Nostalgia" and "Do the Right Thing" total NPR ear worms. But the band has changed tack on their new album, “Something to Ruin.” The music is just as infectious, but the subject matter has become much more topical, dealing with issues of booming real estate, mass consumerism, and, well, the impending Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. They played an exclusive preview of the music and talked about how the end of civilization could be a good thing.Pidgin Languages in the Portland Building - 34:55A new art installation in the Portland Building’s lobby explores an immigrant’s experience through the pidgin language spoken in Lagos, the Nigerian capitol. Bukola Koiki came to the US as a teenager, did her undergrad degree in North Texas, and then came to Portland for graduate school. She speaks Yoruba and English, but says pidgin is a necessity in Nigeria, a country where 500 languages are spoken. LAIKA's 'Kubo of the Two Strings" Is a Hit - 41:30The newest film from LAIKA is out, and critics are calling it the Hillsboro-based animation house's best film to date. “Kubo of the Two Strings” is a coming-of-age epic set in fantasy Japan, where a young storyteller uses music to bring his origami paper creations to life. The film stars Art Parkinson as Kubo, as well as Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara, George Takei and Matthew McConaughey. LAIKA’s CEO Travis Knight is a veteran animator, but Kubo is his first time in the director’s chair, as he recently told Audie Cornish on "All things Considered."

The Thermals originally began as Hutch Harris's solo recording project. He sang and played all the instruments on the 2003 Thermals record More Parts Per Million. In this episode, Hutch breaks down his lo-fi recording of the song No Culture Icons. The track was later mixed by Chris Walla, who's known best for his work with Death Cab for Cutie, and we’ll hear some thoughts from him as well. I spoke with Hutch in front of a live audience at the XOXO Festival in Portland, Oregon.

Justin Hall joins the show to talk about sharing our lives on the web. Others may know Justin from his legendary site links.net, various publications he has worked for or The Nethernet. Justin currently produces thought provoking videos as “The Justin Hall Show” that you can find on Youtube. Better yet, you can stay up to date & contribute to his work via the awesome service Patreon. In true Montreal Sauce fashion, we jump into conversation and don’t get around to introducing Justin until 49 minutes into the show. Being an amazing guest, Justin interviews us just as much as we interview him. We all quickly agree that we have no idea if the 300 sequel Rise of an Empire is historically accurate, but Wikipedia is the way to find out. Justin encourages us to edit, not just lurk on the free encyclopedia. Chris pledges allegiance to After Effects comparing it to a tool rather than service or box of filters like Instagram. Similarly, this week Chris shares that the way we interact with our phones/tablets isn’t necessarily intuitive according to some. Justin prefers using Final Cut & Motion for developing The Justin Hall Show. We discuss the age of the camera phone and sharing on the Internet. While Chris wonders if some folks are sharing because they’re self-absorbed, Justin rightly points out that “authenticity cannot be measured.” Paul introduces pre-parent Paul’s thoughts on Internet sharing vs. parent Paul’s opinion. We discuss digital identity and “Internet fame” and briefly talk about “This is Phil Fish.” Paul talks games, Directional episode titled “E4” and twitch.tv, the video sharing site focused on gaming. We discuss promoting the podcast, creating brands, marketing on the web and the level of engagement of the brands online. Paul reminisces about the Grand Valley Summer Film Program. Justin talks about a recent read, When The Shooting Stops, The Cutting Begins. Chris suggest A Complete History of My Sexual Failures, a personal documentary that was an emotional roller coaster. We talk San Francisco, Google and Detroit. Plus the awesome power of communities. As Chris shares his joy for PMOG, Justin hopes to attend Montreal Sauce Con in 3 years. Justin’s goal is to premier his film about 20 years of web sharing at XOXO Festival & Conference in September. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
