Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Fez. We talk about its platforming and how it fits to taste, game style, and rule escalation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: More cubes! Issues covered: platforming feelings and taste, inspirations and how they play out here, additional move set, floaty physics, a mental game with mostly generous platforming, a game that takes place in your head rather than in your fingers, seeking high highs, sloppiness and guiding the player, no longer seeing the whole world but only the tells, the pleasure of figuring things out, checking out the achievements, how many people get everything, the craft of the game, wanting to feel capable, finding a solution that was not the intended solution, dominated by the puzzle side, those moments where you give a big "no way," extending a simple idea and iterating on it for a fleshed-out game, iterating ideas, a chain of implication, not making the leaps of logic too large, ladders that line up and teach you how to think about the world, not knowing whether you can do a thing yet, not wanting to diminish the revelations, puzzles games Brett hasn't finished and why, editorial from the publisher and Key Performance Indicators, finding a tribe for your indie game, side games, smaller and more cohesive teams, a choose-your-own-email, having an experience, leaving endings open. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Hollow Knight, Indie Game: The Movie, Phil Fish, Nintendo, Mario (series), Little Big Planet, Guacamelee, Super Mario Galaxy, Demons's Souls, Dark Souls, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Tomb Raider (2013), The Matrix, Deep Thoughts/Jack Handey, MYST, Pierre de Fermat, Megaman, Resident Evil, The Witness, Braid, The Talos Principle, Obduction, Cyan Worlds, Super Meat Boy, Fallout, X-COM, mysterydip, Mass Effect, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Twin Peaks, Half-Life, While We're Young, Noah Baumbach, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.  Next time: More Fez! Note: Amusingly, though I did not call out the actresses, Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried appear in While We're Young, and both also appeared in Twin Peaks: The Return Twitch: timlongojr Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series of series on the independent games of the last couple of decades, starting with 2012's Fez. We set the game in its time, talk a bit about its precedents and the landscape of independent games in the middle of that console generation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Single-digit cubes Issues covered: our real plan or lack thereof, early games, the indie revolution, the influences back and forth, the pressure of the space we're in, a highly visible indie, games from that year, sequels vs the different stuff in the indies, democratization of the market, the console cycle, always online fiasco, getting on the Steam store, opening console store fronts to independents, limitations, the broadband market and bandwidth costs, the publicity on the store, low cost of goods, continuing power of retail, a two dimensional puzzle game in a three dimensional world, charm, great music and MIDI with an unsettling feel, rotating the world, rebooting the game, achieving the effect without perspective, the Trixel engine, having a hard time getting it, trusting the game, having a new lens on a game, taking the time to infuse the whole experience, team sizes, telling a different story with an existing language, having fewer people to get on board, independent publishers and producers, influences, glitch aesthetics, map language, climbing on the sides of things, stopping time while the world rotates, how the editor might work, games from the past, CONFIG.SYS (dang it, could not remember), skipping over generations. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Will Wright, Indie Game: The Movie, Polytron, Phil Fish, Dishonored, Halo 4, AW American Nightmare, X-COM, Firaxis, Mass Effect 3, Forza Horizon, Far Cry (series), Counterstrike: Go, Assassin's Creed 3, Borderlands 2, Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma, Journey, The Walking Dead, Telltale Games, FTL, Spelunky, Papo y Yo, Bastion, Super Hexagon, Terry Cavanaugh, Supergiant, Hades, Transistor, UFO 50, Derek Yu, That Game Company, Sky, Sony, PlayStation, Microsoft, Steam, XBLA, Braid, Super Meat Boy, Nintendo, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Zelda (series), Super Mario (series), Metroid (series), Outer Wilds, The Sixth Sense (obliquely), Renaud Bedard, Trapdoor, Penny Arcade, blitworks, Tetris, Axiom Verge, Tron, Out of this World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Super Mario 3D Land, Minecraft, Sam, Interstate '76, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. My guest today is the reclusive designer of one of the greatest video games yet made. He studied game design in Montreal and, after a brief stint working at Ubisoft, left to begin work on a game of his own, a platformer that combined the art style of the Super Nintendo classics of his youth, with perspective-shifting innovations of his own. Six years in the making, Fez launched in 2012 to near universal acclaim, part of the first wave of so-called indie games. After featuring heavily in the  film documentary Indie Game: the Movie, my guest, who is passionately outspoken, became the subject of co-ordinated online attacks, which culminated in his retreat from public platforms, nearly a decade ago. Join me, as I speak to Phil Fish.

Phil: My favorite fruit is raspberry, which you can't get in Japan. Todd: Oh, raspberry. Phil: Oh, well, you can get it in Japan but it's really expensive. Todd: I love raspberries. Actually, where I'm from in the states, we have loads of raspberries for free. Phil: My grand used to have them in her garden so when I was a kid, it was always someone picking the raspberries and like vanilla ice cream and raspberries together. Todd: Oh, man, yeah. My grandmother, actually, she used to make raspberry cobbler. Phil: Cobbler? Todd: Yeah. Oh, you don't have cobbler. You probably have a different name for it in England. It's like a pie, but it's really sweet. You take the blackberries or raspberries, and it's the filling and a pie crust over it. It's a pie. They call it a cobbler, so... Actually, speaking of British food, what's a scone? Phil: A scone is basically a really kind of dried cake, kind or really dried kind of cake material but it's got little bits of raisins in it. Todd: Right, so when you got to Starbuck's and they have the little triangle things, is that a scone? Phil: I don't know to be honest. I don't go to Starbuck's very often. Todd: Right. Phil: I don't recommend them, they're really, really, really dry. Generally, you eat them with cream and tea, but I'm not a fan. Todd: No. Really. Phil: Have you ever ate it? Todd: Speaking of British food, what's your favorite British food? Phil: Fish n' Chips I suppose. Todd: You got to be kidding. Fish n' Chips? Phil: Fish... British food basically is just a cosmopolitan mix of foreign stuff combined with together, like the most popular food now, the national dish, is curry. Todd: Right. How come it's not fish n' chips? Phil: I don't know. Just because maybe people are going a bit more healthy or just because it's different, and curry's the most eaten food now. Todd: Right. Actually, I lived in England for about a year and I loved shepherd pie. Phil: Shepard's pie or cottage pie is very similar, yeah. Todd: Yeah, right. Phil: I do like it but, I don't know. I just don't eat it that often. Todd: No, really. OK, actually now that we're both living in Japan, are there are British foods that you crave? Phil: Um, kind of, something called Branston pickle, which is basically, it's kind of sandwich spread. You have it with cheese, or with like meat, and you put it on, it's like diced vegetables, but really thinly chopped and it's got a special sauce. It's just really nice. I really miss it.Todd: Wow. What's it called? Phil: Branston pickle. Todd: Branston pickle? Phil: Yeah. Todd: Is it like vegemite? Phil: Not really, no, no. It's kind of actual lumps of vegetables within in. We have something similar to vegemite called Marmite. Todd: Ah, that's right. Phil: But the taste is actually stronger. Todd: OK, cool.

As we approach December it becomes time for it to not only be tops on, but for double tops on along with hats and scarves. This week’s Super-Special Guest Teddy Dief held no truck with popular opinion and tried to go tops off from the very beginning of the show. He had flown into London to represent Square Enix Montréal in his role as Creative Director and we took the opportunity to ask what it was like working on AAA titles again after previously working on the indie title Hyper Light Drifter and also being in academia. Teddy also told us about an online crane game that sounds really interesting, an EXCLUSIVE reveal about a game that he’s working on, who he tells taxi drivers that he works for and we tell him how he could use that information to his advantage. One Life Left: always looking to use a system to their benefit. Or to push Phil Fish over. One of the two. We found out how many moons Ste has, how happy Simon is with Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Ann had to do some live editing of the news due to font troubles. What we didn’t find out is how we can get our show on Spotify. We’re missing out on literally fractions of pennies as a result of this. If only we hadn’t worn out our Caretaker during One Life Left Week. Cheerio! Team OLL x Links: https://twitter.com/TeddyDief http://www.teddydief.com/ Tracklist: 1. Somewhat late, we present this month's interview of the Critical Distance Confab! I interview Ian Danskin of the Innuendo Studios YouTube channel. In 2014, Ian Danskin made his first YouTube video about celebrity in internet culture, This is Phil Fish, and what that means. He expected a few views and he would build his audience over time, except that video went viral and is to date, by far, his most viewed video. Since then, he's mostly trekked his own path and talked about whatever interested him. We cover some of those interests in talking about adventure games, the challenge of discussing theory that was mostly self taught and, of course, the virality of YouTube videos and the efforts of tracking what an audience is looking for. Video Game Movie Anatomy hosts break down Video Game inspired movies to answer the age old question: DO GAMES MAKE GOOD MOVIES?!?! In today's episode, hosts Mark Donica, Stacey Shuttleworth and Patrick Dees discuss the documentary Indie Game: The Movie! Indie Game: The Movie is a 2012 documentary film by Canadian filmmakers James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot. The film documents the struggles of independent game developers Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes during the development of Super Meat Boy, Phil Fish during the development of Fez, and also Jonathan Blow, who reflects on the success of Braid. After two successful Kickstarter funds, interviews were conducted with prominent indie developers within the community. After recording over 300 hours of footage, Swirsky and Pajot decided to cut the movie down to follow the four developers selected. Their reasoning behind this was to show game development in the "past, present and future" tenses through each individual

In yet another explosive episode the ‘Cocks are coming at you raw. Suge Knight, former CEO of Death Row records got shot and was thought to have died. They talk about the deal Suge made with the Devil and how pissed Vanilla Ice is. In addition Angry Rob quit his job and explains what pushed him over the edge. Nothing too exciting in new releases this week, as they struggle to find a title that they want, except for Metro Redux. Angry Rob pronounced it “re-dux” Justin corrects him saying it is a French word and it is really pronounced “re-do.” Angry Rob says he took three years of French in college with all A's. Justin and Handsome make fun of Angry for this, only to find out that it is in fact pronounced “re-dux.” Angry Rob hot off of building his monster PC doesn't know what games to play. They discuss strategies for the gamer new to the PC Master Race. But he did start the first Witcher game and kind of likes it. He also played Diablo 3 on PS4 and still really likes it. Justin played The Room 1&2, he doesn't really talk about them other that he played them. Handsome Rob goes on another long diatribe about the games he is playing. In the news they talk about PSN, Blizzard, ESL and LoL getting a DDoS hack. Also, the sad reality that for a hacker that is their job interview. In keeping with the theme getting hacked Phil Fish is a target once again, except this time he wants to sell off everything. Zoe Quinn has a really stupid ex boyfriend. MS is into S&M by putting a Reddit app on the XB1. Night Trap wants to come back, the world doesn't care. And finally they do a Gamescom recap. [Digital Gonzo 2013] This episode, originally published in September 2013 I invited on Bob Chipman, AKA MovieBob along with Daniel Floyd and Leelee Scalaferri of Extra Credits to talk about the age old scenario of fans flipping their lids when something they love is perceived as being meddled with. With the ascent of Twitter and Facebook, forums, comments sections and YouTube we have more opportunities than ever before to voice our discontent, and voice it we have in ways often so hostile and illegible that some sections of the internet appear to be transcripts of the death-screeching of broken killer robots with electronic Tourette's syndrome.  Among other specific instances we cover Anita Sarkeesian of Feminist frequency, The Xbox One, Batfleck, Phil Fish, Grand Theft Auto V, Devil May Cry, Mass Effect 3, Green Lantern, The Star Wars Special Editions and Fifty Shades of Grey. The aim was not to be wholly objective and detached and there is a lot of opinion being flung back and forth during this crackling debate with four vibrant personalities all vying for the mic, but we do try our best to be fair.   To illustrate the many facets of this immense debate I have employed audio segments from some of the best and brightest. With Great Power [Bob Chipman: The Big Picture] Crass Effect [Bob Chimpan: Game Overthinker] Rebecca Black [Charlie Brooker: 10 O' Clock Live] Anita Sarkeesian: The Monster Gamers Created [Jim Sterling: Jimquisition] Harassment [Daniel Floyd & James Portnow: Extra Credits] GTA V Review Revulsion [Johnny Chiodini: GameSpot - Feedbackula] Guide to Comments [Vi Hart] A Day at the Park [Kiriakakis: Mused] Bob, Dan and Leelee have made hundreds of video presentations between them and their recommendations if you're newcomers are the following. Extra Credits [Of Penny Arcade TV] Call of Juarez: The Cartel A Little Bit of Yesterday Art is not the Opposite of Fun Moviebob The Big Picture - Skin Game Game Overthinker - Never Grow Old Music on the show played by Lindsey Stirling Crystallize  Elements Electric Daisy Violin Of course there wasn't time to discuss a bunch of well known examples, including the Derpy Hooves debacle but we do want this show to spark debate on ways for the more considerate side of the internet to gain more of a vocal share of the general discussion, which often seems to be dominated by the enraged and abusive.
