Mary Blair was a fine artist, commercial artist, concept artist, and Disney Imagineer. After graduating from Chouinard and marrying Lee Blair, Mary was set to build a career as a regionalist watercolor painter like her husband. Due to World War 2, fine art was not working out, and the two entered the world of commercial art and animation. Both landed positions at Ub Iwerks Studio. In 1940, Blair joined Walt Disney studios as a sketch artist. The job frustrated her, and she quit shortly after. A few months later, Walt Disney animators went on strike in 1941, right when Walt left on a Goodwill tour of South America. Lee Blair was invited to go with a group of Disney artists. Mary desperately wanted to go, so she convinced Walt to bring her. The South American tour was where Mary Blair flourished as an artist and developed the style we know of today. Walt supported and encouraged her work and involved her in a number of projects back at the studios. Blair was the art director on the films Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos, and concept artist for Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan. Blair left the Disney studios and moved to New York to pursue freelance commercial art. She illustrated for Little Golden Books, did set designs for Radio City Music Hall, and designed ads for Bakers Cocoa and Pall Mall. This area is an entire vacation in itself, housing multiple resorts, restaurants, boating and so much more. If you are a regular to this area or your home resort is over here, this episode will be right up your alley. Most of us have stayed in at least one of these resorts with varying opinions. Throughout this episode, we will get into the history, mindset and much more throughout the era these places were constructed.  Everybody has a part in this episode with Brian starting us off regarding hotel occupancy and why this area was even needed. Throughout the episode, we touch on design and architecture. This was key in the development of the Swan & Dolphin, which created many urban legends, myths and pre-internet 'fan chatter'. We have searched all over for a variety of sources to debunk or prove these rumors, so you won't want to skip these parts as we discuss. Yesterland provided us with some of these details this month, along with lots of digging into newspaper articles from back in this era. The Dolphin has a super unique design, with an almost unusable peak. Learn the secrets of this area and at the same time, take a look at the presidential suite up top!In the past, we have touched on Yacht & Beach Club through various letters and discussions. Going to the Wayback Machine, we found this great site that isn't too vintage, but the pictures scream 1991 by their coloring and also just the old decor of the Yacht/Beach. This site is definitely worth a look, as it is the original from the architect, Robert A.M. Stern. We also discuss how Michael Eisner and how he had his hand in much of this, mostly the Yacht & Beach. Almost two years ago, David Carver reached out to confirm the freshwater fish in Stormalong Bay - he happened to be staying there when they were having issues.  Read the full text right here - thank you David! Any trip to Crescent Lake isn't complete without a visit to the Boardwalk Inn. Our original Boardwalk vacationers give us their take on this resort and we all had one gripe regarding the layout. During this time, we talk about some of the various venues at the Boardwalk, like The Attic and what that is all about. We also get into an amazing discussion with a former tram driver who made his rounds before the Boardwalk arrived. One fun fact of these trams: they used to be the ones that drove guests around Fort Wilderness, which is super cool to hear!  Take a look at this video, which shows the route around the area. News: Friday, June 12th is when the State of California is scheduled to enter phase 3 of their resilience roadmap. This is when theme parks can reopen in the state as well. With this phase, Disneyland is one step closer to reopening. When it does, there will likely be a new booking process similar to that of Walt Disney World in Florida. Reservations may be required and visits may be limited for those with annual passes, giving preference to guests with vacation packages. – https://www.micechat.com/261011-disneyland-update-rumors-reopenings-and-renewal/ Everything seems to be pointing to a mid-July, possibly even a July 17th, reopening. Cast Members are beginning to return to work in the parks and readying the parks for guests. Cast Members estimate that it will take at least 30 days to reopen once they choose a date. The kitchens and restaurants will need to be thoroughly cleaned before food can be delivered. Sanitation will need to happen, along with installation of social distancing measures. – https://www.micechat.com/260892-david-koenig-tantalizingly-close-disneyland-announcement/ Shanghai Disneyland is using a virtual queue system that could be coming to Disneyland when it reopens. The new tool, called the Disney Standby Pass allows guests to create a queuing schedule through the park app. The system is similar to the MaxPass system, with passes being made available throughout the day on an hourly basis. Quotas are limited and are on a first come, first serve basis. The passes will stop distribution approximately 2 hours before park closing. Guests and any members of their party must be in the park and added to the app to use this system. New collection product launches and limited-edition merchandise will not be available until further notice. Fellow Cast Member Domonique Paton was cast as Princess Anna. News: Disney announced that the theme parks in Walt Disney World in Florida would be reopening to the public in July. The Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom will reopen on July 11th, followed by Epcot and Hollywood Studios on July 15th. Stage 3 allows theme parks to resume operations with changes in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19.  Overview: World showcase had grand plans and ambitions.  There were 21 sites plotted for World Showcase when the original idea was pitched.  But, we only got 9 on opening day. Many other countries were oh-so-close to being built, but alas it didn't happen. This is the story about some of the proposed countries.    Notes: Its still a remarkable thing that Disney was able to create a permanent worlds fair, that at the time was unprecedented and made the world a little smaller.  But we can only speculate about what might have been had they managed to get even more countries to commit. This week in Disney Parks West, we take journey through Americas musical past and take in the now Yesterland attraction, America Sings! From the Disney Family Museum; tap into the well that was Walt and politics. While he still considered his studio a fraternity, Unionization was on the rise in Hollywood and the Disney studio wasnt immune. Nor was it spared the effects of the growing conflict in Europe which would soon hit very, very close to home. From Disney Parks East, we cross the lagoon in Epcot and disembark in the America Pavilion where we hear the Fife and Drum Corp march into the square. We then go inside the Rotunda and hear the Voices of Liberty perform a rousing rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.
