From the very beginning, Tosi set out to solve a simple but powerful problem: how do we stay on the path to wellness when the world is full of snacks that derail us? The answer: create clean, crunchy, real food that actually fuels your life, not distracts from it. This week on Startup to Storefront, we sit down with the founders of Tosi, the brand behind the plant-powered bars made with simple, organic ingredients and none of the junk. We unpack how they turned personal observations about health and nutrition into a full-blown movement that's now stocked everywhere from your local health shop to major retailers like Peet's Coffee and Costco. At its core, Tosi is about trust, trusting what's in your food, trusting your body, and trusting that doing the right thing (even when it's not flashy) pays off.

In this episode, host Chris Maffeo talks to Andrew Borenzweig, founder of Beverly High Rye, who shares his journey of creating a modern, luxury-focused American whiskey that breaks away from traditional frontier or rustic imagery. Inspired by the elegance of Beverly Hills, Andrew crafted a whiskey that blends rye's bold spice with bourbon's smoothness, presented in sleek, decanter-style bottles. He initially concentrated on securing placements in prestigious California venues—such as Nobu, Mastro's, Cipriani, and the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons—to build brand credibility and visibility. This strategic on-trade focus laid a strong foundation before carefully expanding into off-trade channels like select Pavilions stores. Throughout the episode, Andrew emphasizes the importance of brand authenticity, founder-led advocacy, and a California-centric rollout as key drivers of Beverly High Rye's success. Additionally, he touches on leveraging top on-trade outlet groups to facilitate potential international expansion, referencing Nobu Tokyo's interest in the brand. What lessons can we extract from the acquisition of Simple Mills and majority sale of Spindrift, valued at nearly $1.5 billion combined? The hosts talk about what these better-for-you brands did right and what made them attractive to strategic companies and investors. We also sit down with Marcin Malyszko and Amit Singh, the co-founders of Mission Cocktails, a purpose-driven brand of premium ready-to-serve bottled cocktails. Show notes: 0:25: Las Diego. Big(ish) Food Was Listening. Neighbor's Big Pay Day. Hopped Up. Imposters, Deer & Bears. – John and Ray are heading west. Are you as well? Let them know. Nearly a year after Ray's rant, Simple Mills got its flowers. So did Spindrift, but we still don't have a vending machine. We're happy that hop-infused water is finally getting its due (at least from the New York Times), but less pleased with an oddly-named brand of non-alcoholic spirits. John highlights an animal-themed water, and Mike does the same, but for a ginger beer, before Jacqui praises purple snacks. 27:27: Interview: Marcin Malyszko & Amit Singh, Co-Founders, Mission Cocktails – A brand of premium ready-to-serve cocktails that donates 5% of gross revenue to local food banks, Mission Cocktails launched in 2023 and markets several products, including a Manhattan, a Margarita and a Mai Tai, all packaged in 375 mL glass bottles. The brand is sold in over 500 retail stores, including Gelson's, BevMo, Pavilions and Whole Foods. Marcin and Amit discuss the origins of Mission Cocktails and how their focus on “liquid to lips” and persistent effort to connect with retail executives has helped the brand make significant strides over the past 12 months. Brands in this episode: Mission Cocktails, Simple Mills, Nature's Own, Dave's Killer Bread, Wonder, Canyon Bakehouse, Tastykake, Samuel Adams, Peet's Coffee, Stirrings, Partake Brewing, Athletic Brewing Co., Lacroix, HopLark, Hop Wtr, Imposter Beverages, Father's Deer, Liquid Death, Bear & Beaver, Purplesful Snacks

In the latest installment of my podcast series, "How'd you get so Lucky?," I have a heart-to-heart conversation with Ash, a virtuoso vocalist and the esteemed fitness director at The Pavilions gym. Our dialogue revolves around the art of crafting a life with intention and embracing the lessons learned from what we affectionately term "favorite mistakes." Ash opens up about her pivotal life transitions, including her bold decision to leave her career in music education and navigating the challenges of divorce at the tender age of 27. We delve into the profound ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic on both her professional trajectory and personal evolution, underscoring themes of growth, adaptability, and self-accountability. The discourse further explores the criticality of staying grounded in the present moment, the pervasive impact of digital technology on our daily existence, and the transformative influence of a positive outlook. Ash recounts her formative years, marked by the nurturing guidance of her grandparents amidst her mother's personal battles, which forged her indomitable spirit. Our conversation traverses Ash's dedication to leading a life rich in fulfillment, devoid of the pursuit of celebrity, her approach to confronting negativity, and the overarching value of compassion and understanding. She also shares the profound joy she derives from her musical pursuits and underscores the importance of intentionally scheduling activities that reinforce a constructive mental state. ABOUT ASH Ash has often been described as the 'energiser bunny'. She's positive, vibrant and knows how to have fun! Ash is always doing something, always busy and always moving - she enjoys physical activity, working out, singing, and time outside adventuring. Ash has a can do attitude and a genuine desire to help people, whether it's in the gym or in life she will do her best. Ash is excited to develop and grow as a person, a trainer, a leader, and in her personal life, and looks forward to helping others do the same - or at least have a good time! @ashbujeyamusic @ashybo21

In the first episode of our new series on Antoni Gaudí, we attempt to place him in the history of 19th-century Spain: a time of civil war, booming industry, declining empire and rapid urbanisation. We talked about the complex politics of the time, and movements for devolution and regional autonomy in his native Catalonia. We also discussed the myth of Gaudí, his status as one of the most famous architects in the world, but also the fact that he is considered deeply uncool amongst architects today. We discussed Barcelona's famous urban grid, and the uneven and contested process of urban growth that shaped it. Lastly we talked about some of Gaudí's earliest projects: streetlights for the city of Barcelona, a set of buildings for the Worker's Cooperative of Mataró, Casa Vicens in Barcelona, El Capricho in Comillas and the Güell Pavilions in Barcelona. Thank you to everyone for following us as far as our 100th episode! If you want to see images for all the buildings discussed, you can watch this episode on Youtube. Edited by Matthew Lloyd Roberts. In this track Sue Berman talks with Frances Walsh from the NZ Maritime Museum and Britomart's Jeremy Hansen about the exhibition Bon Voyage, Good Trip, Be Good : An exhibition of photographs by John Rykenberg. On show in December and January at Britomart - https://britomart.org/festivities-and-farewells-britomarts-summer-exhibition/ "Summer can be a time of exciting excursions, of reunions and departures, of times of contemplation accompanied by a soundtrack of the ocean. This summer, Britomart celebrates the season with a look back before the era of mass air travel, when Auckland's wharves were the place where the city connected to the rest of the globe. From 1958-62, photographer John Rykenberg roamed Princes Wharf taking pictures of festivities and farewells as passengers gathered with their whānau before departing for destinations across the seas. This exhibition at The Pavilions and in the Atrium on Takutai is presented by Britomart, Auckland Libraries and the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui te Ananui a Tangaroa reproduces some of Rykenberg's photographs, a reminder that even as times change, the thrill of travel and the emotion of reunion and farewell remain". China has a long bureaucratic history and tradition, and the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) was no exception. The Ming was one of the largest empires in the world at the time and it established a large and complex bureaucracy to govern it. In this episode, Professor. Chelsea Wang talks to us about some of the bureaucratic practices, which might seem strange to us today, that the Ming employed to keep the empire running. Governing China is a new series that explores the various bureaucratic institutions and administrative policies that the various Chinese dynasties employed to govern their empires. Contributors Chelsea Wang Professor Chelsea Wang is an Assistant Professor of History at Claremont McKenna College. As a historian of late imperial China, Professor Wang's research focuses on the intersection between communication and governance in premodern empires. Her current manuscript project is titled Logistics of Empire: Governance and Spatial Friction in Ming China, 1368-1644, and it examines how the Ming dynasty maintained control over its vast territories using certain administrative practices that modern observers often find counterintuitive and strange. Yiming Ha Yiming Ha is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His current research is on military mobilization and state-building in China between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, focusing on how military institutions changed over time, how the state responded to these changes, the disconnect between the center and localities, and the broader implications that the military had on the state. His project highlights in particular the role of the Mongol Yuan in introducing an alternative form of military mobilization that radically transformed the Chinese state. He is also interested in military history, nomadic history, comparative Eurasian state-building, and the history of maritime interactions in early modern East Asia. He received his BA from UCLA and his MPhil from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The Venice Biennale was created in 1895 as an international art exhibition and after a year's delay due to Covid, it's just re-opened. Artists from across the globe have descended on the enchanting Italian city of canals and churches. There are over 1400 works on display, as well as the Pavilions from 80 countries, which will become part of the landscape of Venice over the next seven months. Finnish performance artist Pilvi Takala has impersonated a wellness consultant, a trainee at a global accountancy firm and even Snow White for her documentary style videos. For her Venice Biennale commission, Close Watch, Pilvi worked undercover for several months as a guard at one of Finland's largest shopping malls and she explained the thinking behind her project to Lucy Ash. There are 5 countries participating for the first time at the Venice art Biennale - Cameroon, Namibia, Oman, Uganda and Nepal and one of the artists who's representing Cameroon is photographer Angèle Etoundi Essamba. Angèle tells Anu Anand how she challenges the stereotypes of African women in her work and why it's important for Cameroonian artists to be part of this Biennale. In the Patagonian region which covers Chile and Argentina are peatlands, a specific type of wetland that's shaped one of the most remote landscapes in the world. Architect Alfredo Thiermann and filmmaker Dominga Sotomayor are two of the artists who've been collaborating on the Chilean Pavilion and working with the descendants of the Selk'nam people, the ancient indigenous group that inhabited that land many years ago. Their immersive video and sound installation “Turba Tol Hol-Hol Tol,” reflects the relationship between this ancestral culture and the landscapes that surrounds it, as they told reporter Constanza Hola. Like Cameroon, Nepal also has its first ever pavilion this year and the artist representing that country is Tsherin Sherpa. The title of the Pavilion is Tales of Muted Spirits – Dispersed Threads – Twisted Shangri-La, created to help dispel misconceptions about the country and to give Nepali artists and the entire country, a new voice in the world. Paul Waters went to meet Tsherin to hear more about his own work as well as the Nepali art scene. Grocery store workers in Southern California have voted to authorize a strike if supermarkets don't raise their wages. The vote could lead to walkouts at some Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions and Ralphs. About 70 stores in San Diego and Imperial counties would be affected.

In this episode, we take a look at the architecture of the UAE pavilion, Alif the mobility pavilion, and Terra the sustainability pavilion. Ok so, the sun is out in the UK and that can only mean one thing – Disney daydreaming vibes are in full swing. At this time of year, we usually crank up the Epcot Master Mix (search for that on YouTube!) to set the mood and transport us to World Showcase whilst we work in the day, and help us to wind down in the evening. It had us thinking and chatting about World Showcase with a focus on ranking the pavilions from our favourite to least favourite. We based our decision on Entertainment, Attractions, Food & Drink, Shopping, and Cultural Aesthetics! Please note that we by no means believe that there is a pavilion that's the “worst”, as a lot of our lower choices have been at the top at some point, and we fully expect our higher choices to change over time! Let us know your ranking and why via the comments! And, if you feel that we were totally WRONG on our choices, tell us why and change our minds. You can find us on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, and as always, be sure to write a review if you're listening on Apple Podcasts and share the show with your pals as it really helps to get the word out.
