Listeners of RoamHowl that love the show mention: jennifer,Because of the tragic events and violence unfolding in the Middle East, there has been a rise in corresponding rhetoric. In this episode, Jennifer discusses her views about how propaganda and performative allyship are being used by opportunistic people and organizations to grow their platforms, brands, and businesses so that listeners can discern when the narrative is being used to manipulate and for self-serving reasons. Episode 34 is all about the topic of opposition. Specifically, it's about dealing with OPPOSITION to you and your ideas. How do you deal with it? Do you enjoy it? Or, is the thought of it so terrifying, that you avoid it? For some of us, we don't have a choice. Opposition comes with the job. Or, we didn't intend to encounter it, but we must, because there it is whether we like it or not. Maybe you've already found that the more successful, visible, confident, outspoken and articulate you are, the more opposition you face. When you are a true power-player and a perceived as a leader, this comes with the job and you must be prepared to deal witih it. The only way to do it is to increase your awareness, practice and train. This can be particularly challenging for women and minorities who deal with increased resistance and micro-aggression and who lack role models or mentors to show them how it's done. Listen in where we discuss all things opposition.... how to react with grace under pressure and how to prepare to meet it. In one of my all-time favorite episodes, I speak with online business strategist Zach Spuckler. It's a juicy conversation with a Class-A internet marketer where we go way beyond the nuts and bold of “How To” and focus instead on topics that concern both seasoned and novice business owners looking to play a strong online marketing game. Passionate about using the internet to get financial freedom, Zach made his first money online at age 13! Since then, he's done it “ALL”.... from affiliate marketing, website building, food blogging, consulting, etc., and today he runs Heart Soul Hustle where he teaches all the ways to sell services and courses online, consults with successful online entrepreneurs and runs an agency that runs Facebook ad campaigns. Here are some of the topics we discuss: - Reframing everything you do in your business as a “big experiment” - How to rationalize the expense of hiring a consultant or joining a mastermind - Being adaptive and open to embracing new technologies and platforms to stay competitive and abandoning them when they don't work - How online marketing is a dynamic field and always changing - Being willing to be a beginner - Assessing the R.O.I. on big investments in consultants and masterminds - Learning the fundamentals of business, marketing and operations - The importance of going “ALL IN” - How growing a strong online presence and business takes time My favorite lesson from Zach: “One failure is not your fate!” Agreed (as I've demonstrated multiple times LOL). This episode is your permission slip to go all in on that idea you have for something you want to launch or try, and to have fun doing it. “Finding peace in the imperfection. So many times when people are going through transition... [when] they are thinking about writing a book or making that career transition, they want to wait for the perfect moment. While you are waiting for that perfect moment, all of the imperfect moments are passing you by. You have to find the peace in the imperfection and stop waiting for the perfect moment.” ~Dr. Annise Mabry Doc Mabry. She is truly inspiring. Some of us get to take our time in going through transitions. Others get a kick in the pants and are forced to swim or die. The transition is involuntary. Doc Mabry falls in the latter category. She has gone through several hurricanes of change – not of her choice or making - and always lands on her feet. She has faced down life threatening illnesses, and successfully transitioned from 17-year position as Dean of Graduate Studies at Devry University after her employment was suddenly terminated (without any cause or prior notice). She picked herself up and moved on with her life, and has created work that is a true expression of her passion and her purpose, a culmination of all of her work experience, where she now is able to bring her whole self to her work. She started her non-profit institution where she helps parents home school their at-risk children, working mostly with children who have dropped out or aged-out of high school. She has done this for 83 families, which is a huge accomplishment. We get really personal in this interview. I was impressed and honored about how deep and vulnerable Doc was with me on the podcast. She shared really personal details about her life, such as how she was a “shadow person,” and how she got tired of hiding her true self, and what she did about it. Like all great stories, Doc Mabry’s story is one about struggle and triumph with identity, finding joy and love. Of course we cover these topics: Transitions Perfectionism Waiting for the perfect moment before taking the leap Being vulnerable Resilience Finding Your Passion, your purpose. It’s about picking yourself up and moving on with your life. I took a short hiatus from creating new episodes, because I have been extremely busy cooking up some new business plans and finishing up the course I have created that helps people grow their businesses through mindset, productivity and communication strategies. I had this episode all ready to go, but I delayed, because I wanted to nail the introduction, and I suffered from hopelessly fractured focus. Today’s topic is all about cyber bullying, cyber shaming and digital resilience. I can report from the trenches on this critical issue. As a lawyer, I have represented people who have been sued for defaming others on- line when they legitimately complained in a Rip-Off report. I have also had clients who were victims of trolls and on-line haters. I have represented artists who were badgered by an angry digital mob into dismantling a political art exhibit. The First Amendment did not win the day in that case. I also help people strategically communicate to minimize the effects of on-line harassment and bullying, and I support them in having the confidence to be more visible so their customers and clients can find them. So many professionals and business owners are afraid to be more visible precisely for this reason – fear of the trolls. It stops them from using technology to its fullest to grow their businesses. And then I read this story about a 6th grader in Mississippi who hung himself after being called fat, ugly and worthless at school. And my heart broke for him. I was that 6th grader. I remember the absolute despair I felt at the time. Obviously, I survived. But so many do not. This morning’s news made me realize I could not wait any longer to release this episode. My next guest is Sue Scheff. Today you know her as the advocate against on-line hate. She was a victim of cyber bullying and harassment before it was even a thing, and she filed a now famous lawsuit to get her reputation back, and won a huge verdict. Sue can tell her story better than I, and that’s why we did this interview. She, along with Melissa Schorr, is the author of Shame Nation, an amazing book with a forward by Monica Lewinsky, someone else who knows how the choices we make as humans sometimes have unintended and long-lasting consequences, especially in the digital age. On-line hate is a very real, very tragic problem. Our society has become so toxic in the way we disagree with each other. It is very difficult to find people who disagree politely anymore. That’s why this topic means so much to me. In fact, it’s the main reason why I started this podcast. I desperately wanted to shift the conversations I was hearing all around me. Please read Shame Nation. And, more importantly, please be kind to each other. Connect with Jennifer Facebook Twitter Email me here. “It's a weird world today where if you really search for the truth, that’s the most contrarian thing you can possibly say.""~David Kadavy David Kadavy is a Top 20 Amazon Author, the voice behind the Love Your Work podcast, a contributor to several of my favorite publications including HuffPo, McSweeny’s Upworthy, someone I follow passionately and always learn a tremendous amount from. He writes about topics that interest me most – creativity, productivity, maintaining focus, and perfectionism. So it makes total sense that when I went to prepare his interview for broadcast here, I would suffer from a terrible bout of perfectionism paralysis myself, the net result of which is that it took me forever to finish this episode. What impresses me the most about David Kadavy is how transparent he is about his struggle to do his own creative work. In fact, this very struggle is grist for his artistic mill. David has a new book about to launch called The Heart to Start all about connecting with the art inside you. How can I not love to read a book like this. David’s next big project is his book entitled “Getting Art Done, Kill procrastination, boost your productivity, and make your masterpiece.” This one I also can’t wait to read. I really could have used it when preparing this episode. So, for those of you hoping to find the heart to start your next chapter, be it a work of art, career move, business venture, relationship, whatever ……. You must not miss this conversation because the insights we openly share will enlighten and inspire, and maybe even shine some light on new possibilities. Jennifer Gardner interviews street artist Megzany. http://roamhowl.com/018 "I would never tell anyone ‘oh, test the waters.' No, just go. Sure it’s freezing, it’s going to stifle you, you’re going to go through all these tribulations, but you have to do it. If you know that you want a change, you have to dive in." ~Megzany Meg Zany is a Los Angeles-based street artist. Zany’s first pieces of street art appeared early 2016 and she has since produced countless works in over a dozen cities around the world, including LA, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Boise, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, West Palm Beach, New Orleans, Montreal, London, Kraków, Paris, and Berlin. The nature of her work is often a contrast — bold in-your-face text paired with lively figures that intimately connect with viewers. Possessing an affinity for flight since a young age, her work often utilizes images that depict aviation. "I find that I'm the most alive when I'm riding the fear wave... turning the tips of my skis straight down the fall line and going for it. It's a lot easier than resisting." ~Jennifer Gardner, on facing fear Shownotes: http://roamhowl.com/014 As a follow-up to Episode 011 on My Struggle with Perfectionism, I did some research and reflection on practical strategies for dealing with this very common tendency that can stop us from doing just about everything. Here is what I came up with: Get out of your head. Mindset, meditation, and the value of sleeping on it, without over thinking. "When a bad thought comes up, whether I'm meditating or not, I acknowledge it and then I tell it 'Thank you,' and 'Please go away.'" ~Jennifer Gardner, on mindset and meditation Face your fear and do it anyway. Jennifer Gardner shares how perfectionism plays into her life and work as a lawyer, podcaster and artist and how she almost quit her making creative work as a result. http://roamhowl.com/011 "I came down with a strong case of 'someday syndrome' -- someday I'll finish this project or that project and then I'll put it out in the world, but 'someday' never came because I was waiting for it to be perfect." ~Jennifer Gardner I've been practicing law for a very long time in a market that is very competitive and I compete. Somehow, somewhere along the line, I got the idea that it did not matter what I did, how hard I worked, how much I learned, that I would never be good enough. What is strange about this idea is how it persists even though, by all objective measurements, I've been pretty successful. "There seems to be a disconnect between all this good stuff and how I feel about work." ~Jennifer Gardner on professional success Hear more about... The drive for perfectionism and how it shows up in Jennifer's life as difficulty delegating, taking on too much and the need for practicing the art of saying "no." How this level of intensity effects more than just work -- but also personal and creative life. Jennifer's practice of releasing perfectionism when it comes to producing RoamHowl -- and how the positive feedback from listeners brings a sense of joy and accomplishment despite any imperfections. A challenge for YOU to be imperfect, stand in your fear, take the leap and see what magic happens. "By doing this project, I feel satisfied in a way that I haven't felt satisfied creatively in a really long time. Jennifer talks about the challenge of living an authentic life and sharing it publicly as she transitions between the worlds of legal practice and podcasting. http://roamhowl.com/008 “I believe that if we share the truth about ourselves, we will discover that we are more similar than different from each other." ~Jennifer Gardner For many years now, my primary work has been in the legal profession. Now, the Legal Profession is still fairly conventional and conservative, although I think this is starting to change. While working as a lawyer, I have felt like my private life had to be very private, like I couldn't show up completely the way I was to work. I always felt some shame around the duality between the "creative me" and the "professional me." When I was a young lawyer, a partner in the firm I worked at once lectured me about how if I did not work 12 hours a day I would never amount to anything. I quickly realized that I could not have a life and survive in a law firm owned by someone else. I also thought at that young age that I could not an effective lawyer if I was not well-rounded and if I did not have any real world experience. This is a primary reason why I started my own law firm. I wanted to do good work to help people for a reasonable fee, and have time to have a life where I could pursue all my interests. Then, a few years ago I went to Trial Lawyer's College and healed a lot of that part of myself. First, I discovered that my emotional and creative way of approaching my cases was not so unusual after all. It was very healing to be amongst a group of supportive lawyers who were striving to discover and authentically express themselves. And this confirmed my belief that a huge part of being a lawyer is extremely creative. Hear more about... Jennifer Gardner interviews former E! News writer & editor, and now independent blogger, Bruna Nessif, on her new entrepreneurial venture, The Problem With Dating. “Tell me I can’t do something so I can show you I can." ~Bruna Nessif In this episode, you'll hear about: 2:00 Bruna's career at E! Entertainment, how she worked her way up, starting as an intern despite people’s doubts that she could make it happen and her strategy to make herself an asset from the moment she stepped into the building. “Your skill set is important but you can always improve that. What you can bring already finessed and finished and polished is your attitude and that’s just as important." ~Bruna Nessif Bruna started out creating content for E! Online that was causing conversations in other forums (not the norm for an intern), went on to freelance and eventually work full-time covering weddings, divorces, baby births, breakups, makeups, and more. She interviewed celebrities such as Josh Duhamel, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Maggie Q. 11:00 How Bruna "broke up with" her job to launch The Problem With Dating blog and website because her interests and passions changed, and how it brought up a lot of self-doubt about stability, security and her own identity without the job that had been so wonderful and comfortable for her. "It was like striking this little love affair that I knew I felt more aligned with but I was afraid to leave the “relationship” I was in because it did provide me stability and because it did give me security and because it was all I knew and I didn’t know who I was without it.” ~Bruna Nessif 15:25 The ego tension of discovering "Who is Bruna without E!?" "At a certain point, I just had to stop feeding myself bs and letting my fears block my blessings." ~Bruna Nessif 16:30 How when looking at any work, friend, romantic relationship — it always comes back to YOU and how much faith or doubt you put into yourself. “I can’t sit here an say 'Oh I want a man to bet on me. I want to find someone who will gamble on me and believe in me when I’m not doing that for myself.” ~Bruna Nessif 18:00 When the universe conspires to support and help you in living your purpose with the natural skill set you’ve been given and how once Bruna made The Problem With Dating her primary focus, opportunities to do interviews or connect with people who can help arose organically & effortlessly. "Either you take the risk and you live it out and the universe will repay you for believing in it or you live a life where it’s constantly just nagging at you and you build resentment or regret because you’re not willing to pursue it." ~Bruna Nessif 20:30 How Bruna deals with moments of self-doubt by reminding hereself why she's doing what she's doing and that she will never let herself down, plus how crucial it is to have an amazing support system. How Gabby Berrnstein inspired her to look for signs that she was on the right track for her highest good and how the owl became Bruna's sign. 24:00 Changing how we define success vs what other people’s expectations or values are. Measuring success not by numbers (money & followers on social), but by being able to create content that is true to her and living an authentic life with which other people can resonate. "I know that I’m going to win because at the end of the day I took the chance on myself to find out, and I feel like that’s winning in and of itself." ~Bruna Nessif 26:00 The NEED to write - how writing is therapeutic and important to Bruna regardless of who is reading. Bruna never would have thought she’ d be a writer 15 years ago — she wanted to be a psychologist originally specializing in couples or relationship therapy, but then she switched her major in college to broadcast journalism because she realized psychology was just about being fascinated by human behavior and trying to figure people out. Now, it seems, all these interests are meshing together in her path. 30:00 Bruna's big debut article in Cosmopolitan, I stopped having sex for a year and this is what I learned, how she pitched it, what happened when her social media blew up as a result and she made the cover of the Snapchat discovery page, the overwhelmingly positive response & the responsibility that comes with sharing her own personal experience. Bruna's commitment that if she's going to write in the relationship and dating space, she needs to be okay with putting herself out there and being transparent and authentic. "I know that whatever I’ve experienced, whatever I believe, whatever I’m dealing in my life, that story is mine and so you can’t take that away from me… that gives me the strength to put it out there.” ~Bruna Nessif 38:00 The importance of sharing your personal stories to inspire other people as a public service to let them know they're not alone. How people are craving authenticity. Bruna's Tweet: “I’m just trying to make feelings cool again.” 43:00 Bruna speculating on whether she's still going to agree with what she writes now 5-10 years form now -- and how it's okay because it is authentic and real in this moment. Jennifer quotes Andre Dubus III, author of House of Sand and Fog. 49:00 The struggle of putting yourself out there in such intimate detail and whether Bruna thinks it has affected her dating life. "I’m not going to change… because of who may or may not like it. If you don't support me and what I'm doing... then you’re not my man." ~Bruna Nessif RoamHowl.com The Problem With Dating Bruna Nessif on... Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube
