Ulysses is a groundbreaking novel in which Irish author James Joyce explores realism through stream-of-consciousness technique and shifting narrative styles. It was published in serial form between 1918-1920 and first published in book form in 1922. The story follows Leopold Bloom through Dublin during the course of one day: June 16, 1904. The events and characters of Ulysses parallel those of Homer's Odyssey, with Bloom corresponding to Odysseus. Although the book was the subject of early obscenity prosecutions, was banned in several countries, and has been considered unreadable by many, it is nevertheless one of the most important English-language works of the 20th century and is undoubtedly a masterpiece of Modernist literature. To this day, the 16th of June is celebrated as Bloomsday by Joyce enthusiasts. Annise Parker, President and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund and LGBTQ Victory Institute talks with  Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about the importance of endorsing openly LGBTQ political candidates for local, state and federal elective offices. Currently there are 1200 openly LGBTQ people serving in offices across America but we need at least 30,000 to come close to leveling the political scope in this country. The LGBTQ Victory Fund works to achieve this goal and sustain equality by increasing the number of openly LGBTQ elected officials at all levels of government while ensuring they reflect the diversity of those they serve. We all know how successful the religious right has been in stacking the political field against our community. Now is the time to support LGBTQ candidates in their quest to advance our progressive values. To be considered for endorsement by the Victory Fund and Victory Institute candidates must be openly LGBTQ, pro-choice and support an individual's right to privacy. It's also crucial that they support the rights of transgender individuals, demonstrate community support and have a realistic plan to win. Candidates must additionally demonstrate support of federal, state or local efforts to advance LGBTQ civil rights through the legislative or regulatory process and demonstrate support of federal, state or local efforts to safeguard privacy and reproductive freedom. Victory Fund was founded in 1991 by LGBTQ activists and donors who recognized the success of EMILY's List at attracting attention and support for women candidates for public office and applied the success of this model to advance equality for our LGBTQ community. We talked to Annise about what she hopes to accomplish at the Victory Fund and her spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Annise Parker is the first former elected official to lead the Victory Fund and Victory Institute after serving six years as a Houston City Council member, six years as City Controller and six years as Mayor of Houston becoming the first openly LGBTQ mayor of a major American city. In the private sector Annise spent 20 years working in the oil and gas industry including 18 years with Mosbacher Energy Company. She also co-owned “Inklings” a lesbian/feminist bookstore for 10 years. Mayor Parker and her wife Kathy Hubbard have been together since 1991 and are advocates for adoption with three daughters, a son and three grandchildren.  For More Info… LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

It's one thing to live an openly queer, happy life - but can you imagine doing so while balancing a high profile career in politics? Just ask Representative Ritchie Torres and Mayor Annise Parker. Ritchie was launching his first-ever campaign for office when an interview presented him the chance to reveal his whole self - an opportunity he took. Annise's entire college career, meanwhile, nearly got sidetracked by a girlfriend's vindictive and homophobic mother. Both fortunately found electoral success and were able to represent not only their constituents, but the LGBTQIA+ community as well. In this episode, Phil and Alex listen to Ritchie and Annise's stories and discuss the impact of queer and trans representation in government, the shifting of public attitudes over time, and the importance of decisionmakers having to answer to their LGBTQIA+ colleagues. “Finding peace in the imperfection. So many times when people are going through transition... [when] they are thinking about writing a book or making that career transition, they want to wait for the perfect moment. While you are waiting for that perfect moment, all of the imperfect moments are passing you by. You have to find the peace in the imperfection and stop waiting for the perfect moment.” ~Dr. Annise Mabry Doc Mabry.  She is truly inspiring.  Some of us get to take our time in going through transitions.  Others get a kick in the pants and are forced to swim or die. The transition is involuntary.   Doc Mabry falls in the latter category. She has gone through several hurricanes of change – not of her choice or making -  and always lands on her feet. She has faced down life threatening illnesses, and successfully transitioned from 17-year position as Dean of Graduate Studies at Devry University after her employment was suddenly terminated (without any cause or prior notice). She picked herself up and moved on with her life, and has created work that is a true expression of her passion and her purpose, a culmination of all of her work experience, where she now is able to bring her whole self to her work. She started her non-profit institution where she helps parents home school their at-risk children, working mostly with children who have dropped out or aged-out of high school.  She has done this for 83 families, which is a huge accomplishment. We get really personal in this interview.  I was impressed and honored about how deep and vulnerable Doc was with me on the podcast.  She shared really personal details about her life, such as how she was a “shadow person,” and how she got tired of hiding her true self, and what she did about it.  Like all great stories, Doc Mabry’s story is one about struggle and triumph with identity, finding joy and love. Of course we cover these topics:   Transitions Perfectionism Waiting for the perfect moment before taking the leap Being vulnerable Resilience Finding Your Passion, your purpose. It’s about picking yourself up and moving on with your life.   Connect with Dr. Annise Mabry Website: DrAnniseMabry.com Doc on Facebook Foundation on Facebook Book: “Educational disobedience; One mom’s home school journey that changed a community”    Connect with Jennifer  Website: RoamHowl.com Facebook Twitter Email me here. Cymene and Dominic ring out 2016 by sharing a few energy and environment stories you might have missed. Then (22:11) we welcome to the podcast Annise Parker, three term mayor of Houston (2010-2016), now a fellow at Rice University's Doerr Institute for New Leaders. As Houston's greenest mayor, we reflect on the major environmental accomplishments of her administration including making Houston—let's face it, a city not often associated in the public imagination with sustainability—the largest municipal purchaser of renewable electricity in the country with much improved mass transit and a greatly expanded network of hike and bike trails along the city's bayou system. Annise talks to us about the important role cities are playing in the fight against climate change, including making markets for renewable energy and pursuing their own “para-diplomacy” with other cities to advance initiatives stalled at other levels of government. She explains why making the economic argument for renewables has been so important in Houston and why she doesn't view Houston's oil and gas industry as an impediment to forward progress. She also shares her thoughts on bike programs, automated vehicles, public transportation, migration, and hurricanes. Finally (1:09:46) Annise shares her frank reactions to the election, predicts many broken promises to come, and expresses her faith in the republic. Can she imagine being Senator Parker or Governor Parker down the road? Listen in to find out. Wishing all our listeners peace and love and a happy, fighty new year. Let's make 2017 better in every respect.

Annise Parker is the mayor of Houston, Texas, the oil and gas capital of America. She once worked in this industry, but says her day job was supporting her "volunteer habit" and eventually gave it up to serve her community full-time. Annise climbed the rungs of local government to become the first openly gay mayor of a major US city in 2010. Her election caused an international media frenzy because of her sexuality. "The perception was Houston was a very conservative, sort of backwards place that wouldn't allow that to happen", but Annise says she used the coverage as an opportunity to talk about her city in a new way. Annise describes being a mayor as the best political job you can have, she was recently voted the seventh best in the world, but is sad about the lack of women wanting to take up this position. Chhavi Rajawat also gave up a high-flying corporate career in India to run for elected office. She has an MBA and worked in the telecoms industry, until she was asked by villagers from her ancestral home, Soda in Rajasthan, to run for the position of sarpanch, or local mayor. Chhavi has used her business savvy to attract funds from the private sector to help provide clean water, electricity and build toilets. She says, "if I were just to depend on government funding I don't think I'd be able to do what I've been able to do in these five years." She's been credited with changing the face of rural India because of her achievements. Chhavi says for her "every day is a Monday", people queue up at her front door early morning and late at night to discuss their issues. (Photo: Mayor Annise Parker and Sarpanch Chhavi Rajawat)
