Welcome to a crossover episode of a different sort. But first: How are you doing? No, really? I ask because May is Mental Health Awareness Month. So many of us, myself included, struggle to articulate how “off” we feel right now, a cruel joke given that the good folks and orgs behind this month's observance urge us to check in with our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.  I'll go first (yikes!): The only way I can describe my current state of mind is fragile. Can you relate? If you're an entrepreneur, an educator, a corporate employee, a HUMAN, I bet you can. You're okay. I acknowledge and honor your struggle. This episode isn't about mental health per se. It's about creating a secure and attentive environment for guests to feel supported, understood, and willing to engage in vulnerable conversations. The high schoolers behind Power Your Story, my student mentee podcast, beautifully illustrate my point. Their cohort-led interview with Peer Support Specialist and Mental Health Advocate Ashley Scott showcases subtle practices anyone can incorporate to become a better listener and, thus, better podcast host. Co-hosts Elvis, Emerie, Jules, and Alejandro facilitate a space where Ashley feels supported to speak more candidly about her mental health. That safety is mutual: Ashley's comfort leads the students to go off-script, to ask more meaningful follow-up questions, and to add personal observations that make for a more engaging conversation. You can talk about podcasting for marketing, sales, audience growth, or business all day, but this genuine exchange is why I love podcasting; this is where your audience will find value. The last few episodes of Podcast Envy have focused on hosting and content strategies guaranteed to make your show a repeat listen. By creating a safe, intimate container where you and your guests can discuss important topics, you're signaling to the audience that they, too, are seen and heard. I appreciate that not everyone's format is conducive to exploring tough conversations. Still, anyone can follow the Power Your Story lead, regardless of your show's POVs, by remaining present and reflecting back to each guest. They are just brothers from Toronto, Canada. I first found out about them because they were in a Disney movie, Zombies 1 and 2, and I see the background dancers and they're so amazing. I look them up on Instagram first. There was somebody from that movie who posted a picture and I just commented on that picture and then Flow XS liked my comment. Ms K: Anaid, I think you spend a lot of time on Instagram. Do you love being on Instagram? Anaid: Yeah. Ms K: Tell us what you like about it. Anaid: I like the filters. I like, I dunno, there's something about Instagram that I like. When I'm commenting on posts, I feel happy. I watch Flow XS on YouTube. They dance mostly to hip hop music. Ms K: Why do you think they're special? What do you think it is about when they dance that makes them different than other dancers? Anaid: I think they have a different flow and unique, and that's what I like about them. One day I will love to see them perform in person. Ms K: So for you, you have a disability that would make it pretty difficult for you to move your body in the same way that they move their bodies. Probably even I could not move my body in the same way that they move their bodies. Because like you said, it's really unique and they've probably put in a lot of hard work. Anaid: Yeah, I wish I could dance like that. Ms K: Is there any physical activity that you have done, that you really enjoy? Anaid: Standing up. When I can stand up, I feel strong.  I have a brain tumor. It makes it difficult to walk. And when I see other people dance, I wanna do that.  Sometimes I DM people I follow, but I don't hear back. It doesn't really matter. I have made friends on Instagram who like bands. When I first got my Instagram account, I was 18 or 17 years old. I waited for a lot of years. I think it's because my disability doesn't, like, respond really quick. Ms K: And how did it feel when you first started using Instagram? Anaid: I was happy. Ms K: Right away, you loved it? Anaid: Yeah. Ms K: I'm wondering cuz you've seen some movies and some performances and Flow XS – when I looked at their website, they've been in a ton of different things. Do you have, like, a favorite video or a favorite performance you've seen of theirs? Anaid: There's this YouTube video. Ms K: Mm-hmm. Anaid: It was like a class and they were teaching us how to dance to “Somebody To Love” by Justin Bieber and Usher. Ms K: So it's a class and they're teaching you how to dance to “Somebody To Love”? Anaid: Yeah. I like how they're teaching us step by step. I go over the steps in my mind. It made me feel happy.  I think listeners should check out Flow XS because they are the best dancers. I think it will make you feel good and happy. My name is Anaid. Go check out Flow XS and thank you for listening.

Ian Chadwick joined us online all the way from California, where he works as a ranger in Joshua Tree National Park.  Before that Ian lived in Chicago and worked as nature educator in different places. He shares his own story of why he grew to love nature, why he thinks it's important to connect with it even if you live in the city, and why we should protect our natural environment. He recommends Every Kid Outdoors, a program through the National Parks to give free passes or checking out your local park district. And for those of us living in and around Chicago, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Garfield Park Conservatory, Lincoln Park Zoo (especially the African Penguins), North Park Village Nature Center, and the nearby Indiana Dunes National Park. We also talk about Reiki, tarot cards, and super hero psychology. Sarah shared that she doesn't like the word "control" when talking about your feelings and your body's response to stress. "Podcasting is like YouTube without the video!" - a discovery by one of Andrea's (super smart) students... because after I asked a gazillion podcasters, no one came up with that perfect description. How can I effectively summarize the podcasting powerhouse that is Ms. Andrea Klunder? Andrea Klunder truly believes in empowerment and engagement through expression in media. Using podcasting as a tool to bring people together, she truly believes that podcasting can be an effective way to engage, educate, and communicate within our diverse communities. This includes special learners, who can use the power of podcasting to evolve as young minds with special needs using her podcasting project, "Power Your Story." Today, we speak about her unique podcasting story and how she uses the humble podcast to help students achieve greatness.   Highlights: How Andrea turned her own passion for podcasting into a powerful communication tool for students with special needs in high school using her "Power Your Story" project. How Andrea successfully pitched podcasting as an educational tool for high school students. How Andrea was able to create a real world podcasting project for high school students on a budget. The technology that students used in order to record their podcasts. Were there any unexpected costs that Andrea did not budget for? How the storytelling and interviewing aspect of podcasting can engage and empower a special learner. What was Andrea's biggest challenge in engaging her special needs' students in the podcasting project. How podcasting can empower students to become experts in both planning and producing in a real world context. How Andrea turns podcasting into a community project for her students. How the editing process can help empower the podcaster-- with or without special needs. Why becoming a podcast mentor is so important. Wow! That's a lot of great podcast production information! I plan on experimenting with it while making it work FOR ME. From time to time, things may be different, go a bit wacky or even sideways, so your feedback will help me (and my lovely team) learn, grow and craft something that serves you, dear podcasters.   The technical thing I learned from this episode: Double sided tape helps keep your boom arm in place when you have an odd shaped table edge.   Cat in this episode: Fat Round... who has turned into somewhat of a mascot for the show. #podcats   Personal Podcasting Pain Point: My son came home about 5 minutes early and about 5 minutes before the episode wrapped up. That might not be a big deal to a lot of you, but schedules are super important and transitions are super hard for him because austism. He's getting better at managing his reactions, so while it was a tad stressful for that last 5 minutes, it was also small WIN for him and for us parents who work so hard to help him through this stuff.   Meet The Podcaster:   Power Your Story Podcasting   Andrea Klunder works with mission-driven individuals and organizations to help them use podcasting as a powerful tool for connection, trust, and social impact.
