You'll hear about the 'boys club' that shields the guilty, the power dynamics that undermine truth, and the courageous efforts to give the silenced a voice. We unravel the case of David, framed for a crime while the actual perpetrator, shielded by corrupt ties, walks free. The conversation extends to the psychological impacts of wrongful incarceration, emphasizing the dire need for legal representation and the often rocky road to reintegration. The final part of the episode reminds us that the pursuit of justice is as much about the heart as it is about the law. Guest April Kelly discusses her motherhood journey including postpartum depression, restricted milk supply, medical gaslighting, doula birthing, and more. More about April and her journey: Just a few years ago, April Kelly and her family were celebrating one of the most joyous times of their lives, bringing home their new baby. Like most parents, she and her husband experienced the full range of emotions, happiness, excitement, a tinge of anxiety but most of all, the warm sensation of unyielding love. Shortly after returning home from the birth of their 3rd child, they were faced with a sudden change of events that ultimately led them to make the decision to supplement full-time. After battling postpartum depression, a restricted milk supply, and excruciating feedings, April decided to grasp onto the tidbit of sanity she had left, forgetting about the mommy guilt and diving headfirst into supplementing. "Like many moms, I felt ashamed, overwhelmed, and a bit guilty. What could I have done differently to avoid this outcome? I wasn't looking forward to the task of formula shopping or the potential of mom-shaming that sometimes comes along with formula feeding." After experiencing terrible side effects from a popular plant-based formula on the market, April and her husband decided to take matters into their own hands, committing to extensive research on formula ingredients and alternative options. Safe to say, a fire was lit that still burns today. "With the aid of pediatricians, industry experts, my husband, and all of my mom-friends, we've developed a special recipe that provides complete nutrition, quality, and convenience." As a woman, a mom of four, and a wife, April strives to create an inclusive family-friendly brand that empowers, educates, and equips parents to make the best decisions regarding the health and well-being of their children starting with their ready-made plant-based formula for infants, and toddlers Website: www.thesurecompany.com Facebook Link: https://www.facebook.com/thesurecompany Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ Full show notes on this episode can be found here: https://miavoss.live/72 Find Mia On Social Media here. This is shit we DEFINITELY don't talk about: Friendship Breakups. This is a messy and taboo subject for many and guest Aimée La Fountain dives deep into the nuanced layers of kicking a friendship to the curb. Pro-tip: This episode is an excellent follow-up and pairs nicely with Episodes 68 and 69 Aimée La Fountain is a Greater New York-based writer and marketing strategist. She currently serves as an arts columnist for Gannett and specializes in features. Her writing has appeared in YES!, SELF, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among others. I wrote a piece for Yes! Magazine offering advice for recovering from the end of a friendship, based on what I've learned from a few breakup experiences with long-term (10+ years) friends.I believe there's a hunger to address the issue because despite it being a common (in a 2016 Finnish study, 70% of participants had ended friendships) and painful (a 2010 study found that social rejection can be as distressing as physical pain) experience, society tends to give it little attention. The end of a friendship can be as devastating as the end of a romantic relationship, yet we don't have friendship divorces or other established norms for how to go about it. While we also have expressions like "it's not you, it's me" for romantic relationships, there isn't a similarly established dialogue for friendship breakups. Today's topic is ayahuasca & other healing plant medicine modalities and I have two guests! Humberto Alcala(who is a shaman by the way) and Ruger Hebert - they have an ayahuasca retreat center called Finca el Pendulo in Jalisco Mexico. Tune in as we discuss all the amazing benefits and we do a deep dive into the background of ayahuasca as well as the experience itself. Humberto Alcala, is best described as a modern-day medicine man. Ten years ago, after several personal experiences with ayahuasca, the medicine led him away from his successful contracting business in California towards becoming a highly respected facilitator – and Shaman – of mental exploration and emotional healing through sacred medicines. The culmination of this path resulted in training with an experienced traditional Shipibo Shaman, while living amongst the indigenous tribes deep in the Peruvian jungle near Pucallpa Peru. Humberto's background combined with traditional shamanic training provides an effective bridge between the western psychology alongside the native South American medicines. Ruger Hebert is the creator and director of Mexisoul Retreats. His connection to plant medicine is a deeply personal one. In May of 2021, while living in Las Vegas, he crossed paths with Humberto in one of his ayahuasca ceremonies. For many years prior he struggled with depression and a general dissatisfaction with life. The experience was transformative, life changing, and culminated in a journey where he created and now directs ayahuasca retreats at a center called Finca el Pendulo in Jalisco Mexico. Their mission is to help our guests heal, find their purpose, and connect with their higher selves. https://mexisoulretreats.com/ For full show notes on this episode: https://miavoss.live/67 Find Mia online here or here. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/miavosslive/support

In this episode of Shit We Don't Talk about, Mia chats with Rahaleh Nassri host of the Violent Femme podcast. What's the Violent Femme podcast? Glad you asked! Violent Femme is a narrative podcast about women in history who were brave, bold, and ingenious, yet are mostly remembered for their brutality or villainy, if at all. Each episode will resurrect one of history's brutally brave women whose image has been tarnished or even erased by men who fear such women but have long been entrusted with our history. Violent Femme will retell and sometimes reimagine history from the heroine's perspective. This is herstory. Talking about what women need is awesome, but talking about that in the context of women always being victims is not healthy or productive. Rahaleh started Violent Femme to tell the stories of women that history largely ignores. These are women that embody the flawed hero archetype normally reserved for men. Through their action, these powerful women redeemed themselves and moved beyond their flaws. These are stories worth telling.
