    Madeleine Black - Unbroken - Ep. #52

Madeleine Black has an unusual personal story which she uses to inspire and motivate others. She chose to forgive the two men who gang raped her at thirteen years old and she shares her story for many reasons. She wants to end the shame, stigma and silence surrounding sexual violence enabling others to find their voice, whatever their story is. She wants people to know that it's not what happens to us that is important but what we do with it. She will show how changing her mindset tapped into her resilience and transformed her life, making people question their own thinking and encouraging them to see that there are always choices to make, and if we choose to, we can get past anything that happens to us in life both professionally and in our personal life. She wants to encourage others to live their life courageously too; but ultimately she wants to inspire hope and show people that we are all so much stronger than we think we are. The sharing of her story publicly on The Forgiveness Project's website in September 2014, opened many doors for Madeleine in ways she never imagined, and the invitations started to pour in. Many women and men got in contact and explained how reading her story gave them strength, hope, and a different perspective of what's possible in their lives. She has taken part in both TV and radio interviews and has been invited to share her story of being gang raped as a teenager at conferences, book events, schools etc. She recognises that she was a victim of a crime that left her silent for many years but has now found her voice and intends to use it. Not just for her, but for so many who can't find theirs yet. In March 2018 she won the Amazing Strength award at the No. 1 Magazine Amazing Women Awards and in October of the same year was asked to be the Patron for Say Women, a Scottish organisation which offers safe accommodation and support to young women who are survivors of sexual abuse/rape and who are homeless. She is one of 50 Thrivers taking part in research by The Global Resilience Project to develop a resilience blueprint for others. She is a TEDx speaker, a story teller for The Forgiveness Project and has recently become involved with their programme RESTORE, sharing her story in prisons. In June 2020, she was asked to be Patron for Justice Is Now, an organistaion that campaigns to end the use of rape myths and victim blaming in the criminal justice system. In November 2020 she started her own podcast show called “Unbroken The Podcast with Madeleine Black” And in December 2020 she was asked to be an Ambassor for Freedom From Abuse. Her memoir, Unbroken, was published on April 4th 2017. Lis helps to unlock potential and transform mental wellbeing through speaking, consultancy, training programmes and through her self-help memoir THIS IS ME. She works with individuals, organisations and schools/youth organisations. Following experiencing major trauma as a teenager and having no help to process what had happened, for many years life was a struggle. Lis dreaded going to work, relationships were a challenge and she often felt she had no control over what was happening. She felt that she should be happier, more successful and should be able to just get on with things. But she wasn't and she couldn't. Then on a sales training course (of all places!) Lis had a wake-up breakthrough moment that was the start of a complete turnaround. It led her on a quest over the past 30 years to discover more about who she was, the impact of trauma, how to develop positive mental wellbeing and create a life and business which she loves. Now she is passionate about sharing all she has learned so that others can do this too. https://www.liscashin.com/ About your host: After years of suffering with crippling communication anxiety, Simon Day was left with two choices: spend his whole life hiding in the shadows and risk losing everything, or find his voice. About your guest: Michael Edwards, Director of the Northern Affinity, is today's guest speaking with Simon Day on the Simon Speaks Podcast. The Northern Affinity is a partnership of SMEs and businesses in the North of England who collaborate with shared values and beliefs. The world is your oyster. Everyone in The Northern Affinity dreams big and achieves bigger. We know that variety is the spice of life and we want to encourage that variety; not everyone is the same and we don't expect their aspirations to be, either. When you’re part of The Northern Affinity, you’re part of our community. You’re in the squad, you’ve found your tribe; you’re cheering each other on, lifting each other up and driving each other forward. You’ll feel the support from others and you’ll be there to give support, too; because, hey, we’re all part of this for the same reason – to be better. To find new ways of working, to come up with amazing ideas, to have a safe space to ask for opinions from people we trust and to create business and life we want. We believe that networking can produce fantastic results. However, we believe that meetings and events should be an added bonus, not a necessity. Using social media and other tools, we facilitate ongoing and organic collaboration and don’t force this through rigid meetings or structure. https://thenorthernaffinity.co.uk/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/thenorthernaffinity/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-edwards-thena/ https://twitter.com/TNorthAffinity https://twitter.com/MENorthAffinity About your host: After years of suffering with crippling communication anxiety, Simon Day was left with two choices: spend his whole life hiding in the shadows and risk losing everything, or find his voice.
