fWotD Episode 2953: Trafford Park Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 5 June 2025, is Trafford Park.Trafford Park is an area of the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, opposite Salford Quays on the southern side of the Manchester Ship Canal, 3.4 miles (5.5 km) southwest of Manchester city centre and 1.3 miles (2.1 km) north of Stretford. Until the late 19th century it was the ancestral home of the Trafford family, who sold it to the financier Ernest Terah Hooley in 1896. Occupying an area of 4.7 square miles (12 km2), it was the first planned industrial estate in the world, and remained the largest in Europe over a century later.Trafford Park is almost entirely surrounded by water; the Bridgewater Canal forms its southeastern and southwestern boundaries, and the Manchester Ship Canal, which opened in 1894, its northeastern and northwestern. Hooley's plan was to develop the Ship Canal frontage, but the canal was slow to generate the predicted volume of traffic, so in the early days the park was largely used for leisure activities such as golf, polo and boating. British Westinghouse was the first major company to move in, and by 1903 it was employing about half of the 12,000 workers then employed in the park, which became one of the most important engineering facilities in Britain. Trafford Park was a major supplier of materiel in the First and Second World Wars, producing the Rolls-Royce Merlin engines used to power the Spitfire and the Lancaster. At its peak in 1945, 75,000 workers were employed in the park. Employment began to decline in the 1960s as companies closed in favour of newer, more efficient plants elsewhere. By 1967 employment had fallen to 50,000, and the decline continued throughout the 1970s. The new generation of container ships was too large for the Manchester Ship Canal, which led to a further decline in Trafford Park's fortunes. The workforce had fallen to 15,000 by 1976, and by the 1980s industry had almost disappeared from the park. The Trafford Park Urban Development Corporation, formed in 1987, reversed the estate's decline. In the 11 years of its existence the park attracted 1,000 companies, generating 28,299 new jobs and £1.759 billion of private-sector investment. As at 2025 there were 1,400 companies within the park, employing 40,000 people. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:55 UTC on Thursday, 5 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Trafford Park on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Matthew.

Last Saturday as I hosted TED X Dalt Vila on stage here in Ibiza, I invited a talk about the Truth. It IS supposed to be absolute, unquestionable and the facts that form the very foundation of everything we know or at least expect to be true. But in today's world—where deepfakes blur reality, misinformation spreads like wildfire, and algorithms shape what we see and believe—how do we even begin to separate fact from fiction? We live in an era where narratives outweigh nuance and headlines out shout honesty. Where the sheer volume of information doesn't make us more informed, but more divided, more uncertain, and more vulnerable to have the wool pulled over our eyes. Our next speaker is someone who carved out career as an investigative journalist. Bob Trafford spent years unearthing hidden truths, analysing evidence, and navigating the delicate line between what is real and what is manufactured working for Forensic Architecture. His work doesn't just reveal what we believe to be true—but why we believe it. So, in a world where the truth is increasingly up for debate, how do we find it? And just as importantly—how do we protect it? Bob Trafford.

In the July 1945 general election, the British public offered Winston Churchill, as he put it himself, the ‘order of the boot'. A victorious war Prime Minister was kicked out. In his place, his deputy, the Labour leader Clem Attlee became Prime Minister. There was massive enthusiasm for the Attlee government in the working class, which extended to many soldiers. These were the people let down after the First World War when the promise of a ‘Land fit for Heroes' was betrayed. They, and the government they elected, weren't going to let that happen again. But does that mean that the Attlee government was socialist? In this episode, we study the social reforms it introduced and how they built on advances made by earlier radicals, many of whom were not socialist. In particular, the principal inspiration for those reforms came from William Beveridge, author of the Beveridge Report. Far from being a socialist, he was a Liberal, even briefly a Liberal MP.He'd identified five giant evils, want, ignorance, squalor, disease and idleness. This episode looks at the reforms designed to address the first four of these. The fifth, idleness, we'll return to later.Illustration: Nye Bevan talking to a patient in Park Hospital, Trafford, Manchester, on the first day of the NHS, 5 July 1948. Sean Farrington looks at Manchester United's plans to build the UK's biggest stadium. Plus, Boohoo Group rebrands as Debenhams - but is it enough to turn things around?
It's time for The Truth!Dougie's back in business with Sam after a well-earned week off and it's a return with a bang as we turn our attention to Manchester United - always a behemoth of a topic, who are currently seemingly locked inside a battle with themselves. After a dreary start to 2025, questions are being asked of Ruben Amorim's stewardship, and if United have actually got worse since he took over. Now, to be fair, Amorim himself said when he took the job that things were going to get worse before they got better, but much of the fanbase was expecting more of an uptick in form five months in than what we've seen on the pitch, especially after defeat to Fulham in the FA Cup wiped out one of the two remaining options that United had for silverware this campaign. But is that criticism fair? Amorim has struggled to get this squad ticking, but there are mitigating factors - the players are taking some time to adapt to his system (those that can), whilst the most impactful players in this squad have been struck down by injuries just as things were taking an upturn for them. Is that enough though, to absolve him of fault? Should United ride out this storm, trust in their new manager and try to build something long term? Or have we already seen enough to suggest that this isn't going to work and that a change is needed before United get bogged down in another cycle not going anywhere? Well, The Truth is somewhere in the middle... And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Shoot outs, red cards and moments of madness – the FA Cup delivers. At old Trafford cup holders Man Utd were dumped out by Fulham and the fans made their feelings clear - the focus of their ire was Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Is his efficiency drive having an adverse effect on the club? On the pitch Amorim persists with a 3:4:3 formation. Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts will get a three game ban for a horrendous challenge on Crystal Palace striker Jena-Phillippe Mateta…is that enough? Anthony Gordon saw red and will miss the cup final, is that too harsh? And Matheus Cunha snapped against Bournemouth, does incidents like that put off big clubs from signing him? Finally, as Danny Welbeck scored the winner for Brighton, who is the most universally loved player? Manchester United: The Lost Tapes episode three is out now on all podcast platforms. We think you'll love it. More below.---Manchester United has been subject to numerous takeover attempts in its rich and controversial history. In the early 1980s, Robert Maxwell chanced his arm, so too did Rupert Murdoch with BSkyB in 1998. We all know about the Glazer family's seizing of control in 2005 and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's recent acquisition of a minor but controlling share.Still, perhaps the most infamous of all remains Michael Knighton's fascinating attempt to buy Manchester United in the summer of 1989. You'll remember many of the details, surely. The sight of the former schoolteacher doing Trafford pitch before the opening day of the season has gone down in legend.United spent big, as Knighton promised the world. Yet, before Christmas, his takeover bid had collapsed, and he was proclaimed as a Walter Mitty character by the press. What went wrong has often been disputed. Now, for the first time, you'll hear the reasons for the breakdown, as it happened, told by those who were involved at the time. This is Manchester United, The Lost Tapes. Stories from United's rich history, told in a way you've never heard before. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's time for The Truth! With Ruben Amorim set to take the reins at Manchester United this weekend, Sam and Dougie dig into the future of Marcus Rashford - whether he fits into the new system that Amorim is likely to play at Old Trafford and if he can utilise a fresh start to revitalise a career that feels like it's in limbo right now. Whilst Rashford's last year or so has been somewhat underwhelming, there is also a feeling that he has been playing in a team that has been far less than its component parts, and that without a functioning system around him, Rashford is one of the players who struggles to make an impact the most. That should change under Amorim - given what he has achieved at Sporting - but without an out-and-out winger in his preferred 3-4-2-1 system, where does Rashford fit best? As one of the floating 10s behind the striker? Or as an out-and-out No 9 tasked with running the channels and getting in behind opposition defences? Can United's homegrown superstar rekindle his spark under his new manager? Or could he get stuck in football purgatory - trapped by high wages and a sky-high-fee, but without any of the interest to genuinely find a new home? The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Hello Rank Squad! We're delighted to have a new voice on the show today, Mr Eli Quivey, a self-professed 'English bloke in an American body' and a TikTok star, who has recently spent 10 days completing a football trip of a lifetime around England - visiting his beloved Old Trafford, Anfield on a Champions League night, and of course, the home of football, Craven Cottage. Eli walks us through his journey and what took him to this point, before he takes the reins for the main ranking - talking through the five things he loved most about English Football Culture whilst on this side of the Atlantic, and allowing for some interesting cross-comparison with the experiences he had growing up in the US. Then Dean flips the script, finishing the show with a ranking of the things he has missed most about the UK (from a footballing perspective) since making the hop across to San Diego. It's Ranks! Hello Rank Squad! We're dialling in today on the big news that broke this week - Manchester United's sacking of Erik ten Hag and their approach to replace him with Sporting CP's Rúben Amorim - which at the time of recording looks very close to being completed. First of all, Dean walks us through the ins and outs of how the Manchester United backroom came to the conclusion that they were going to part ways with Ten Hag, and why it happened at this point; before detailing their approach for Amorim and how they were able to move so swiftly and efficiently in securing their first-choice target. Then, in Part Two, Jack takes over to talk about what Amorim brings to the table, both on a personal level and from a tactical perspective. We discuss the nature of Sporting when he took over there, and how he has form for turning around a huge club which is on its knees, as well as his communication mastery and how he has got a disparate group of players to buy into his methods and turned Sporting from also-rans to the dominant force in Portuguese football. There's also a chat around how his formation and ideology maps onto this current Manchester United squad - the players who will thrive in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 and those who might struggle for minutes, as well as some thoughts about problem areas which United will probably have to look to tackle in the January transfer market or the summer. Finally, in Part Three, we talk a little bit about Monday's Ballon d'Or trophy, which was awarded to Rodri of Manchester City and Spain. There was quite a fallout from his victory, including Real Madrid somewhat throwing their toys out of the pram about the fact that Vinicius Jr didn't win it, so we give our thoughts on the entire unsavoury scene. It's time for The Truth!Sam Tighe and Dougie Critchley sit down to discuss one of the burning questions of the international break - whether Erik ten Hag is the man who can guide Manchester United back to where they want to be, challenging for league titles and competing consistently in the Champions League. United's summer was a chaotic one, starting with the new INEOS-backed ownership fluttering their eyes at a number of different managers across Europe, before finally coming to the conclusion that the best one (or the best that they could get) was already at the club in the shape of Ten Hag. Three games into the season, and the knives are out for Ten Hag again, with United's last game before the international break - a 3-0 home loss to Liverpool - driving home the point to many that the Dutchman was perhaps not the best man to be in the dugout as United attempt to get back to the top of the pile. So is he a help or a hindrance to the club's plans to return to the top table, and are his tactics limited or simply making the most of what he has at his disposal? The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Mauricio Pochettino has now managed as many games as his predecessor, Graham Potter, and eerily… their records are almost identical. But what isn't identical is their fate after those 31 games, with Potter sacked shortly after. So, why hasn't Pochettino received the same treatment and is he given the benefit of doubt due to his relative success as a manager? ‘Wembley of the North' was the phrase written by the media, as it's reported that Jim Ratcliffe wants Old - or new - Trafford to become the best in the country. So, do United need a new stadium, and are they at risk of turning a sacred stadium into a soulless stage? Charlotte Riddell, born Charlotte Cowan in 1832, was a prolific and accomplished British writer during the Victorian era. She was recognized for her contributions to the literary landscape, particularly in the genres of Gothic fiction and supernatural tales. Riddell began her writing career in the mid-19th century, initially publishing under the pseudonym F. G. Trafford. Her early works demonstrated a keen interest in the mysterious and the macabre, drawing inspiration from the popular Gothic tradition of the time. One of her notable early works is "The Moors and the Fens," a collection of supernatural tales published in 1879. However, it was under her own name that Riddell gained widespread recognition. Her most well-known works include novels such as "George Geith of Fen Court" (1864) and "The Race for Wealth" (1865). These novels explored themes of finance, social class, and the changing landscape of Victorian society. Riddell's literary career was not limited to novels; she was also a prolific short story writer. Her short stories often delved into the eerie and uncanny, earning her a reputation as a skilled writer of ghost stories. Notable collections of her short stories include "Weird Stories" (1882) and "The Uninhabited House" (1875). Beyond her success as a writer, Charlotte Riddell faced the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated literary world. Despite these obstacles, she managed to establish herself as a respected author and editor. Riddell's contributions to the literary landscape of her time were acknowledged, and she became a notable figure in the Victorian literary scene. In addition to her writing, Riddell was involved in editorial work. She co-edited the St. James's Magazine, demonstrating her commitment to fostering literary talent and contributing to the cultural discourse of the era. Charlotte Riddell's literary career spanned several decades, and her works continue to be studied and appreciated by scholars of Victorian literature. Her exploration of the supernatural, combined with astute observations of society, has left a lasting legacy in the realm of 19th-century British literature. Learn more about your ad choices. Host Ricky Sacks is joined by returning guests Lee McQueen, Richard Cracknell and Vass Koni from Dr Tottenham Pod to review Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min scoring a hat-trick as Tottenham recovered from a goal down to thrash Burnley at Turf Moor and continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season. Lyle Foster finished a lovely, flowing move to give the Clarets an early lead, but Son's delicate finish restored parity 12 minutes later and the visitors never looked back. They dominated the rest of the half and Cristian Romero's curling effort from the edge of the box completed the turnaround on the stroke of half-time. James Maddison continued his fine start to the campaign with a peach of a goal nine minutes into the second half, the former Leicester man curling beyond James Trafford after Burnley had gifted the visitors possession inside their own half. Son side-footed past Trafford for his second of the game before completing his treble with a low strike after latching on to Pedro Porro's delightful through ball. Josh Brownhill's neat finish pulled one back for Burnley in stoppage time, but it was no more than a consolation. Spurs, who were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Fulham on Tuesday, move to ten points from their opening four games, while Burnley remain without a point this season. Nominations for
