After the launch of Labour's new White Paper on immigration we ask, despite Starmer's protestations, if Farage and Reform are already dictating not just UK politics but UK government policy. We also delve into the detail of the changes outlined in the paper. The Labour leadership is also facing a backbench rebellion over its cuts to disability benefits and is also being urged by 69 MPs to recognise a Palestinian state. Will they listen to either of these calls?Lesley's latest column in The National examined the rise of Reform and speculated on its potential to break out of its unionist bubble and attract disappointed SNP voters in next year's Holyrood elections.First Minister John Swinney was grilled by Martin Geissler on whether independence would be page 1 line 1 of the SNP manifesto at those elections. We analyse his response. Is the UK/US trade deal worth the paper it's written on? Not according to US economist Joseph Stiglitz. Was getting such a quick sectoral agreement a sign of weakness or strength for the UK's position?Ahead of the Holyrood vote on assisted dying Lesley gives her thoughts on this difficult decision facing MSPs. Today on Story Behind The Album , we take a deep dive into the making, release and stories you might not know behind Queen's 'A Night At The Opera'.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the 1975 album 'A Night at the Opera' by Queen in (just under) twenty minutes. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Queen's previous album, Sheer Heart Attack had achieved commercial success and the single Killer Queen reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. Despite this success, the band was broke at the time, essentially due to a contract they had signed which meant that they would produce albums for a production company, who would then sell the album to a record label. This meant that Queen saw almost none of the money they earned. Brian May was living in a bedsit, while Freddie Mercury lived in a flat with rising damp. The matter eventually came to a head when the recently married John Deacon was denied a cash advance of £4,000 by the band's manager for a deposit on a house. The group's increasing frustration led to Mercury writing the song Death on Two Legs, which would serve as the opening track to A Night at the Opera. Upon release, A Night at the Opera became Queen's first number-one album in the UK and produced the band's most successful single, Bohemian Rhapsody. The song has since become popular worldwide. In 2011, a digitally remastered version of the album was released.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

In this insightful episode of Liquid Late Nights Podcast, we traverse the blurred lines between fact and fiction, revisiting the treatment of iconic figures by mainstream media. We discuss the media's portrayal of prominent figures and the consequential impact. Focal point of the discussion is the sensationalized depiction of OJ Simpson's case, supplemented by reflections on popular productions like 'People Vs. OJ Simpson' and '30 for 30'. Breaking away from controversies, we indulge in the artistic spectrum of pop culture and discuss critically acclaimed films 'One Love' and 'A Night in Miami', shedding light on the performances that reincarnated legendary figures like Bob Marley and Malcolm X on screen. Exciting upcoming series on Apple+ such as 'Franklin' and a series around John Wilkes Booth also make for engaging discourse. The episode explores classic narratives to modern television, commenting on Benjamin Franklin's mission to France, and how this resonates with today's digital content consumption. We debate on the rush to catch the latest cinema releases and the wait for digital releases. Join us as we dissect narratives from latest trailers and TV shows like 'Three Body Problem', 'One Love', 'Fallout', 'The Boys', 'Shogun', 'X-Men' and 'Don't Look Up'. Strauss Jr Indigo and the Forty ThievesSheet MusicJohann Strauss JrVoice(s) and OrchestraIndigo and the Forty ThievesIndigo und die vierzig Räuber (Indigo and the Forty Thieves) is the name of an operetta composed by Johann Strauss II to a German libreto by Maximilian Steiner. The text was based on "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", one of the most popular tales from the Book of One Thousand and One Nights. The operetta was premired in 1871 in Vienna and the general reception was mixed. It was re-staged several times in the following years and, after Strauss' death, it was completely reworked by Max Steiner. The new version, premiered in 1906, was called One Thousand and One Nights (previous titles included ' Queen Indigo' and 'A Night on the Bosphorus'). The title 'One Thousand and One Nights' was also used by Strauss in a waltz (Op. 346) that drew melodies from the original stage work.

Interview - Peach - Tunes 'A Night In Copenhagen'
We're back to a normal show this week after the craziness of not one but two Comic-Cons over the last couple of weekends! I'm joined by the lovely Bex Trista of TristaBytes again to chat tv, film and gaming, plus we have 2 interviews this week - The first is with 'Riverdale' star Lochlyn Munro, aka Betty's dad Hal, and the second is with 'Lucifer' star Aimee Garcia, aka loveable lab geek, Ella Lopez.Whilst most #LuciFans will know Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez, LAPD's relentlessly upbeat forensic scientist in 'Lucifer', she is also extremely well known for playing Jamie, younger sister to Angel Batista in 'Dexter' and nanny to the serial killer's child. She's also popped up in a multitude of shows including 'Hawaii Five-0', 'Bones', 'Supernatural', nearly all the 'CSI's' and 'Family Guy'.Lochlyn Munro stars in 'Riverdale' as Betty's father Hal, who had an extremely interesting storyline this season (I won't go into any detail in case you've not watched it yet!) On tv, he played Jack Sheridan in 'Charmed', and has popped up in a huge number of shows such as 'Arrow', 'Bones', 'Supernatural', 'Smallville', and 'Lucifer'. On film, he's appeared in 'A Night at the Roxbury', 'White Chicks', 'Unforgiven', 'Freddy vs. Jason', and can soon be seen in 'The Predator', the fourth Predator movie due in UK cinemas on 14th September 2018.Also On This Week's Show:Bex joins me in the co-host so we chat about tv shows and films we've been watching since she was last on. We take a look at all the latest tv & film news, including the latest renewals & cancellations, ‘The Walking Dead’ cast turnover, casting news in general, and Bryan Fuller's status as the Littlest Hobo of the showrunner world. We give you our recommendations for upcoming TV in the next 7 days. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
A musical episode chock-full of showstoppers, emotional reconciliations, and a proper whodunnit? What did we do to deserve you, Riverdale? On this week's Dial M For Maple, Marah and Cameron have nearly lost their voices after singing along with—and screaming at—Riverdale High's Carrie: The Musical, but they manage to pull it together to praise the ambitious episode (and KJ Apa's dance moves). Plus, a rundown of our new Black Hood suspects, and a closer look at the town's private prison problem. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

After two weeks off the air, we've returned to discuss Wes Craven's 'My Soul to Take'. We have a HUGE 'garbage in, garbage out' segment this week which includes the movies 'Rocky Balboa', 'Michael Moore Hates America', 'Say Anything', 'A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon', 'The Fearless Vampire Killers', 'Megamind', and 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2'. We also enjoyed watching the 2000 mini series 'Dune' this week, so talk a little bit about that, as well as the anime 'Black Butler'. We look forward to having a special guest in the next couple weeks (Slug from the Slugcast), so please watch for that special episode! Thanks for joining us this week. :) My Soul to Take(2010) R: Some 15 years after the presumed death of a vicious serial killer, children whose birthdays match his supposed "deathday" start to disappear. But whether the killer -- or his tortured soul -- is responsible remains to be seen.
