So — climate change. How do you come up with a plan that actually makes a significant difference, and that people will follow? Maybe even want to follow? For Davis and Yolo County, but really, for any city, any county. Our guest today, Richard McCann, has some ideas about this. He's a Davis energy consultant and founding partner of M.Cubed Consulting. On Feb. 9, he'll talk in Davis about “effective local climate actions” — including why plans at the levels of local government “seem to hit a pause when they need to jump into action.” The reasons include wishful thinking about how people will participate. (The photo shows an electric car about to get charged in a Davis home.)
On this episode Kat is joined by Richard McCann, international keynote speaker, to talk about his inspiring story of overcoming adversity and how he is using his experience to positively influence others. KEY TAKEAWAYS It doesn't matter what role the audience I'm speaking to has in life, what car they drive, we're all human beings and we've all been through some challenges and experiences. That's the way I get over any nerves, I know they've been through some stuff and they'll get something from what I have to share. You can only join the dots in the future, not at the time, but all those incidental things are absolutely vital in taking you down a certain path. My sister stabbed her boyfriend and it was that that made me think about starting to write my book which then led to my first speaking engagement which led to me travelling round the world as a motivational speaker. When I was 5 my mum went out drinking and didn't come home, me and my sister were sitting at the bus stop waiting for her at 5:30am, it's heartbreaking to think about. But, she didn't come home because she'd met Peter Sutcliffe, a serial killer who went on to murder 13 women in the UK after my mother. That's when my story changed in ways I didn't know were possible and what equips me to speak about resilience. When I was in the army in West Germany, a magazine was published about mum's killer and I had a nervous breakdown. I was discharged from the army, started taking drugs and ended up in prison. After getting out, me and my sister entered into a suicide pact, but I ended up saving her and that incident was the turning point because I decided that life was worth living and I began rebuilding my life. BEST MOMENTS “They say you can't please everybody, but I'd like to please as many people as possible.”“I was told my story wasn't ‘conference material', but I've spoken over 3,000 times. We've got to be careful who we listen to.” “Before he was arrested, I thought my mum's killer was going to kill me, especially because he also killed one of our babysitters. I had a very challenging childhood, but it wasn't all bad.” “When I share my story I talk about the importance of two words: ‘I can' which, coincidentally, are in my name. Don't just believe it, do it.” ABOUT THE GUEST On a cold and misty morning in October 1975, Richard McCann woke to discover his mother was missing. He was just five years old. She was the first victim of the notorious serial killer, Peter Sutcliffe. Having lost his mother to one of Britain's most notorious serial killers, Richard was raised in poverty by his often drunk and violent father on a tough council estate in Leeds, England, and was on the at-risk register before he could even walk and talk. What followed was foster parents and time in a care home, and he left school with no qualifications, stumbling from one mistake to the other until he eventually found himself with no prospects after a spell in prison. The same prison as his mother's killer! When he was released, he had few prospects and entered into a suicide pact with one of his sisters. He had reached his rock bottom.By learning to accept full responsibility for his life, embracing his authentic self and adopting an iCan attitude, he went from no-hoper to Sunday Times Bestselling Author and internationally renowned award-winning motivational speaker. His first book, ‘Just a Boy', sold almost half a million copies in the UK alone and has been translated into more than 10 different languages. Other books followed along with a speaking career that has seen him deliver over 3000 keynotes across the globe.Learning to think positively is a skill that every young person will find invaluable throughout their life. Richard's story demonstrates what can be achieved with a Growth Mindset and his presentations and interactive workshops will help your students, staff and parents discover their true potential.Today, Richard has delivered over 3000 presentations around the world, inspiring audiences with his story of overcoming adversity, and sharing his powerful iCan approach. In 2009 he founded the iCanSpeak Academy, training individuals and teams to enhance their presentation skills and communicate their message authentically and with confidence, so they achieve more effective results. Website ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life' price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

Richard McCann, a renowned inspirational speaker in the UK, joined Derek Arden for an insightful interview. The two first crossed paths 15 years ago in Holland at a Dutch-speaking convention, and since then, Richard has become one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the United Kingdom. In this interview, he shares his compelling life story, highlighting his journey from the tragic loss of his mother to the serial killer, Peter Sutcliffe, at the tender age of 5, to his transformation into a motivational speaker empowering others to overcome their challenges. Richard's life took a devastating turn when his mother, Wilma McCann, became the first victim of the notorious serial killer, Peter Sutcliffe. At just five years old, Richard and his sister, Sonia, embarked on a heart-wrenching search for their mother when she failed to return home. This early trauma left an indelible mark on Richard, leading to a long struggle with low self-esteem and a profound lack of confidence. The negative portrayal of his mother's death in the media and society's perception of the victims, including Wilma McCann, as prostitutes, only exacerbated Richard's feelings of shame and self-doubt. He kept his true story hidden, even lying about how his mother had died to avoid judgment and negativity. It wasn't until he wrote his book, "Just a Boy," that Richard began to confront his past and find his voice. The process of writing his book was a cathartic experience for Richard. It allowed him to explore his early years and the traumatic loss of his mother. While the book helped him process his emotions, it also liberated him from the shame and embarrassment he had carried for so long. The positive response and support he received from readers further boosted his self-esteem, and he finally felt proud to share his story. Richard's journey into motivational speaking was not a straightforward one. His initial attempts to secure a book contract were met with rejection, but he persevered. A chance encounter with someone who had turned their life story into a successful book and film renewed his motivation. With the support of an agent and a bidding war among publishers, his book was eventually published in 2004. However, it was not until a speaking engagement that Richard realized his true calling. During a presentation at a college, he realized the potential impact of sharing his story with others. Encouraged by this, he began attending meetings of the Professional Speaking Association, where he found a community of like-minded individuals. It was at one of these events, particularly a talk by William Mitchell, that Richard decided to leave university and pursue a career as a motivational speaker full-time. This pivotal moment set him on the path to becoming the influential speaker he is today. One remarkable aspect of Richard's journey is his determination to continuously improve. He compares his pursuit of excellence to the Japanese concept of "Kaizen," meaning continuous improvement. Whether it's refining his website, perfecting his showreel, or enhancing his brand, Richard is relentless in his pursuit of personal growth. This drive to improve himself and his message has led to significant success in his career. Richard McCann has also faced personal setbacks, one of the most challenging being his involvement in recreational drug use in the early '90s. This period of his life saw him arrested and sentenced to prison, an experience that would have crushed many. However, Richard's ability to reframe his situation and find a silver lining in adversity allowed him to emerge from this dark chapter with newfound wisdom. He believes that none of us will ever reach our full potential, as there is always room for growth and improvement. In his speaking engagements, Richard conveys a message of resilience and the belief that there is always a way back from setbacks. He challenges his audience to create their own "bounce back gra...
How anyone finds it in their heart to forgive the man who murdered their mum is beyond most's comprehension. Add to that her murderer is one of the most notorious serial killers - Peter Sutcliffe. This is not an easy listen but from it comes a message of compassion and forgiveness; gold in the darkest of places. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode, Andy Lopata speaks with two incredible guests Jo Berry and Richard McCann about their experiences of trauma and forgiveness. Both lost a parent to violent acts - McCann's mother was murdered by serial killer Peter Sutcliffe in 1975, and Berry's father was killed in the IRA's bombing of the Conservative Party Conference in Brighton in 1984. Despite the immense tragedy, both found ways to come to terms with their loss and seek positive outcomes. McCann became a motivational speaker, while Berry started the charity Building Bridges For Peace. McCann shares his journey of forgiveness, beginning with forgiving his abusive father and eventually letting go of his anger towards Sutcliffe. He discusses how he tried to understand Sutcliffe as a human being, although his attempts to meet with him were rejected. However, McCann highlights that compassion and forgiveness can lead to healing and positive change, despite this painful journey. Berry shared how she made the decision to meet with the man responsible for her father's death. She stresses the importance of listening to one's gut instinct and taking responsibility for one's own healing by choosing a way that does not involve the person who hurt you. McCann & Berry also share personal experiences of forgiveness and healing, highlighting the power of forgiveness in bringing personal growth and positive change. They reflect on how their experiences have impacted their ability to forgive people for everyday issues, acknowledging that it's a journey with ups and downs. They also emphasise the importance of owning up to our mistakes, repairing harm, and creating stronger connections McCann shared how writing a book about his life without consulting his wider family impacted his relationships. Berry and McCann stress the importance of having supportive friends and family who will be there for you even if they disagree with the choices you make. They share how they have dealt with family members who do not support their choices and have focused on the positive relationships in their lives. This episode underscores the need for individuals to take control of their own mental wellbeing and not blame others for how they feel. Join us in this inspiring conversation and gain valuable insights into the power of forgiveness, understanding, and compassion in personal and professional growth. We speak with Richard McCann who's life story is both heart-rending and uplifting. Richard suffered an extremely traumatic childhood following losing his mother Wilma McCann at the early age of 5 after she was murdered by serial killer, Peter Sutcliffe, AKA 'The Yorkshire Ripper'. Richard talks us through his upbringing where he spent his childhood years living on the bread line on a council estate, violent father and no mother. His early life experiences continued to affect him and consequently saw him go to prison for 6 months for drug related offences. Following his release, his sister Sonia almost ended up following his footsteps after she stabbed her boyfriend in self defence, which lead McCann to his pivotal moment that he says 'changed his life' where he decided to write a book about his life experiences. After losing his sister a few years later in 2007 to suicide, Richard fell into his reoccurring suicidal thoughts that he says he first experienced as a child. After overcoming so much pain and suffering from his early life, Richard has since gone on to find success as a motivational speaker, professional speaker, inspirational speaker and keynote speaker. A truly unimaginable but inspirational life story, which shows the true power of mindset and how a positive mindset can really change your life. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did! Richard McCann was five years old when his 28-year-old mum Wilma was murdered by Peter Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe, who became known as the Yorkshire Ripper, killed 13 women across Yorkshire and Manchester during a five year period in the late 1970s. Wilma was his first victim. Speaking to 5 Live's Adrian Chiles on the day of Sutcliffe's death, Richard described the search for his mum and the moment he learned she had died. He also talks about discussing her death with his own children, and why he had chosen to forgive Sutcliffe for his mum's murder.
The serial killer Peter Sutcliffe has died of Covid 19. He was convicted of the murders of 13 women, and the attempted murder of 7 others, in Yorkshire and the north-west of England between 1975 and 1980. Jane speaks to Joan Smith is a feminist writer and campaigner, and author of Misogynies – she was a reporter in the North of England at the time. Louise Watiss is a criminologist at Teeside University and Carol Anne Lee is the author of Somebody’s Mother Somebody’s Daughter. We also hear from Richard McCann whose mother Wilma was the first woman killed by Peter Sutcliffe, and Mo Lea who 40 years ago was an art student In Leeds when she was attacked. Sutcliffe was never convicted of the assault on Mo. During the current English lockdown, only ‘deathbed’ marriages and civil partnerships are possible, and there can be no parties. In the other nations of the UK, small ceremonies are being allowed, and in some cases very limited receptions. Overall this year an estimated 200,000 weddings have been cancelled due to the restrictions imposed on social gatherings to try and limit the spread of Covid-19. So what impact is all this having on the hundreds of thousands of women who work in the wedding industry? Jane speaks to Jessie Westwood, founder of the campaign What About Weddings and owner of wedding & event production company Studio Sorores, and to Jemma Palmer who runs bridal boutique Halo & Wren. Kate Malone is one of the UK’s leading potters and ceramicists. She tells Jane about the therapeutic benefits of working with clay.

Today Lee talks to Richard McCann, one of business, and life’s great survivors, who’s overcome horrifying personal tragedy to raise himself up to the top. In the wake of tragedy, Richard discovered a resilience he never knew possible, and recognises his path back as the making of himself. In this very special episode, Richard discusses his incredible story, his outlook, his vision, how to overcome your fears, and his top presentation tips! KEY TAKEAWAYS In the wake of his mother’s death, who was killed at the hands of the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, Richard found himself falling into a spiral of depression and self-abuse. Pulling himself out of this dark beginning began in earnest when he emerged from prison in 1997 and fought past suicidal feelings in order to write his story so far. This started him on the road to prosperity and success. Repetition is the best tutor. Your brain learns through experience. The more you do anything, the more you learn that it’s nothing to be scared of. This is how Richard became such a successful speaker. A motivational speaker is someone who can tell a story in such a way that it inspires the listener to apply the key lessons to their own lives, and to feel improvement in some way. If you knew your time was limited, what would you do with it? We only have so much time here, and yet we waste days so often. We should treat each day with care. The key areas of public speaking are: Eye Contact - Make your audience feel as though you are speaking to them personally. Meet their eyes for a few seconds. Vocal Variety - Raise your voice, slow it down, add speed and variety. It keeps the passion alive in the content. Storytelling – People need stories in order to remain engaged. It ensures that the listener uses their imagination. BEST MOMENTS ‘I love Mondays!’ ‘When you join all those turning points together, it makes a massive difference in your life’ ‘If you’re scared of spiders then keep holding them. You soon learn that there’s nothing to be scared of’ ‘Everyone has a story’ ’So what!’ ‘He got comfortable with being uncomfortable’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Business Problems Solved Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Richard McCann is one of the UK’s leading inspirational speakers, having now delivered over 2500 presentations globally. He’s a multi-award-winning speaker as well as a Times no.1 bestselling author. His ‘You Can Do It’ keynote presentation centres on the fact that no matter how difficult life gets, there is a way through it, and no matter how serious the challenge becomes, anything is possible with the right mindset. It’s a talk that everyone can take something from, whether or not they are experiencing change, adversity or just the pressures of living day to day. Richard was born into poverty, listed on the "At Risk" register and then lost his mother when he was just five years old. That led to a brief placement in a children's home until he went to live with his estranged and often violent father. After leaving school with no qualifications, low self-esteem and little confidence, he joined the army. When that didn't turn out well and he was kicked out, he turned to drugs before finally reaching rock bottom, a failed suicide pact with his sister. Richard’s turnaround has been remarkable, but whilst sharing his story, Richard inspires audience members to look at their own lives in a different way. He allows them to put their own challenges into perspective and understand their own potential inside. But when World War II broke out he found an unlikely second career, as a spy trying to prevent the Nazis from getting an atomic bomb. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow Berg's enigmatic life and its strange conclusion. We'll also consider the value of stripes and puzzle over a fateful accident. Guest: Richard McCann Age: 49 years Location: United Kingdom Bio: Richard McCann is a Sunday Times No1 Bestselling author. His first book, ‘Just a Boy’, sold close to ½ million copies and has been translated around the world. He's a Motivational Speaker who overcame an almightly fear of speaking to having now spoken 2500 times across the globe as far and wide as Malaysia, South Africa, Iran, Switzerland, Canada and many more. He's also a Presentation Skills Coach. He has been the subject of two BBC documentaries about his extraordinary life story. Brought up on the ‘At Risk’ register until his mother was murdered by the serial killer Peter Sutcliffe (The Yorkshire Ripper), Richard went on a downward spiral. Foster homes, children’s home and then a violent upbringing by his estranged father took away any self esteem that he had. He left school with no qualifications and was kicked out of the army for psychological reasons before he turned to drugs to ease his depression. After a prison sentence for a drugs offence, and with his home about to be possessed, Richard hit rock bottom where he considered taking his life. It was at this point that he found the gut wrenching determination to turn his life around and fight for a better future. That turn around has been remarkable. Now married with a family of his own, three books about his life being published, and a much sought after inspirational speaker. His presentation centres on the way in which he has turned, what can only be described as insurmountable odds, to his favour and has shaped a more positive life for himself. It’s one that most people don’t forget in a hurry. The World Needs More: I believe the world needs more kindness and compassion and understanding that we are one world and one human race. It's not what I speak on ordinarily. Wow Factor: My WOW factor for many is that fact that I overcame what for many would send them under. The murder of my mother when I was a five year old boy. Losing mum and a number of other setbacks along the way have in fact shaped the person I am today. Putting that to one side for a moment, one of the moments that have sahped what I do now, being a speaker, was taking part in the public speaking competition at school, at the age of 12, which I won. It took incredible courage to get on stage with no confidence and low self esteem. When I first started speaking professionally in 2005, I was a terrible speaker. So I went out there and studied great speaekers including Tony Robbins. I modelled what those speakers did and, well, the rest is history. Favorite Color: Orange

Todays guest is a man who has had moments of huge darkness in his life, but has made sure that the situations that he unwittingly found himself forever linked to, were never going to define him. On a cold and misty morning in October 1975, our guest woke up as a scared and bewildered 5 year old, to discover that his mother was gone. She was the first victim of the notorious Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe who for several months had struck fear into the heart of the United Kingdom as he preyed the streets of Leeds looking for unwitting victims. What made this mans journey so amazing was that his first reaction, even at such an early age, was to think about how he could improve his situation. He knew he couldn't bring his mother back but he could decide how to look differently at what life had thrown at him. And since that date, he has moved through many different areas where his personality has changed due to the challenges that he has overcome, not least deciding that he could forgive the man that took so much from him. And now with several bestseller books, a movie of his life, and over 200 hundred powerful speeches and presentations across the globe each year, he has defined himself as who he is, not who he was.
