Once again we're over the Atlantic this week visiting southern Illinois to chat with one of pop-punk's perennial peeps, Mr Dan Vapid. Dan Vapid and The Cheats have a new record out which we hear about the writing process of as well as two key tracks. We look back on Dan's time in The Riverdales and Screeching Weasel as well as discussing the best love songs ever written, Chicago musical greats and the time Dan let off a Tommy trumper in the Amersham Arms. There's too much Metallica chat too (Tom's fault) Tom's got covid, Niallism turns green, we see what's popping off North of the border and a whole heap of other shiz. Extra songs for you this week are by Descendents, Wood, Paper Rifles, Wonk Unit, 88 Fingers Louie and Norsk Rakk.
Dan Vapid and the Cheats return with a new album, “Escape Velocity,” on Friday. That said… I think he has. Dan Vapid and the Cheats return to Car Con Carne for a chat about the past, present and future.+

Dan Schafer (aka Dan Vapid) is a pop-punk icon. He started recording and touring as a teenager, but his defining musical partnership with Ben Foster and John “Jughead” Pierson began when he joined Screeching Weasel in 1988. As one of the biggest punk bands at the time, Dan made a living off of the royalties from Screeching Weasel and later the Riverdales, opening for Green Day in stadiums around the world. The lack of consistent touring led to a need for Dan to look in other areas to make ends meet, however, and he spent time as a chef in Chicago hotels before moving to rural Illinois with his wife and family, taking a job as a substitute mail carrier at the USPS. In this episode we explore the challenges of his shift from full-time musician to full-time mailman, and along the way learn a lot about the daily grind - from canines to QAnon - that most people (especially Dave) take for granted. Car Con Carne favorite and theme song creator Josh Caterer returns to the show after Smoking Popes delivered yet another phenomenal show, closing out the first annual T1 Fest at the Forge in Joliet. This episode is sponsored by C&H Financial Services. Discussed on the show: Caterer brother/Smoking Pope Matt Caterer uses stage performance as his sole exercise regimen. #GOALS My mistaken identity situation with Matt Caterer. My ongoing mispronunciation of Popes drummer Mike Felumlee's surname. Why do people spoil setlists for themselves? Dan Vapid crashed the podcast! The art of mixing a setlist with old and new songs. I wouldn't blow smoke up Josh's ass. We recorded on the "good side" of Joliet. The band's live set was a little "loosey goosey" that night. Josh was in Apocalypse Hoboken for a minute. Secondhand smoke at the Forge damn near killed me. Why on earth haven't people been eating on Car Con Carne lately? The next time I interview Josh, it'll be in Lombard and it'll be for breakfast.

Dan Vapid's been around the punk rock block for decades now, creating indelible music with bands like Screeching Weasel, the Methadones, Riverdales, the Queers and Sludgeworth. After road tripping across Illinois, he pulled up in front of the Forge in Joliet, got out of his car and jumped right into mine with Dan Vapid and the Cheats band members Simon and Dillon. We quickly covered Dan's career (he had to get into the venue to perform), but we hit all the high notes. This episode is sponsored by C&H Financial Services.
