208 - Simple Ways to Feel at Home in Any Place In this episode, we explore This Is Where You Belong by Melanie Warnick, a book that examines how to create a sense of belonging no matter where you live. The host reflects on her own journey to embrace her town, which has never felt like home, and Warnick's practical advice for fostering connection, appreciation, and engagement within one's community. The Illusion of “Elsewhere”: We often believe we'd be happier in a new place, but the reality is that happiness depends more on our perspective and community than location. Warnick's insight helps dismantle the myth that a move will “solve everything.” The Power of Knowing Your Neighbors: Engaging with neighbors creates a feeling of community and security. Building connections can be as simple as a friendly hello or lending a hand. When neighbors help each other, a town feels much more like home. Exploring the Local Scene: Discovering the unique offerings of your area—parks, markets, eateries, and historic spots—provides a fresh view and appreciation for where you live. Even if you've been in the area for years, Warnick suggests there's always something new to explore. Volunteering and Community Involvement: Engaging in community work helps you feel part of something bigger and more invested in the local area. Volunteering or joining a club can be transformative for both you and the community. Developing a Routine: Frequenting a favorite coffee shop, park, or walking route creates familiarity and a sense of belonging. Finding small routines that connect you to the place can make any location feel more comfortable and “yours.” Takeaways-Feeling at home is often about mindset more than physical location.-Building local connections and engaging in local activities can help transform a place into a beloved home.-Seeing the uniqueness of a place—the people, traditions, and sights—fosters a genuine appreciation for it.-Small efforts to connect with others and engage in the community can make you feel rooted no matter where you are. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/208-being-at-home-where-you-live/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/schmern Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

According to a Suffolk University/NBC10 Boston/Boston Globe tracking poll published on Monday, Trump leads Haley by 19 points. Trump received 57 percent support and Haley received 38 percent. With DeSantis dropping out of the race on Sunday, Haley gained two points. The poll was conducted between January 20 and 21 of 500 likely Republican primary voters in the state. The poll has a margin of error of 4.4 percent. A Washington Post/Monmouth University poll, also released on Monday, placed Trump 18 points ahead of Haley, with 52 percent supporting the president and 34 percent backing Haley. DeSantis received 8 percent support, as the poll was conducted before the Florida governor dropped out of the race. This poll was conducted between January 16 and 20 of 712 potential voters in the New Hampshire Republican primary and has a margin of error of 4.2 percent. https://www.frontpagemag.com/vermont-resettled-somalis-shootings-are-up-185/ Vermont Resettled Somalis, Shootings Are Up 185% Shootings are up 185% in Vermont from 2021 to 2022. “We are not used to this level of violence in Vermont,” Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger complained after the city racked up 5 murders. That may not sound like much, but it gives the normally sleepy city, where Bernie Sanders got his start, a higher murder rate than Philly. When James Eaton, a mentally unstable leftist who had praised Hamas, shot and wounded three Arab Muslim men outside his home, the media eagerly diverted attention from the crime wave to the shooter, who was conveniently white, while falsely blaming it on ‘Islamophobia’. The discredited hoax was not only trying to rally support for terrorists, but also to distract attention from the real perpetrators of the violence that has overtaken Bernie’s old city. The shooters in Burlington, VT are much more likely to be Muslim male teens. Another recent shooting out of Burlington made the national news when Hussein Mohamed, the underage son of Somali immigrants who don’t speak English, shot and killed Madden: a local 14-year-old boy. It was reported that “state police were able to make an arrest despite at least two eyewitnesses from the car providing multiple false statements about the crime.” The murder wave in Burlington was touched off in 2022 when a Muslim teen, shot and killed Hussein Mubarak, 21. The 19-year-old had been part of a Somali Muslim refugee family profiled by the New York Times under the headline “U.S. a Place of Miracles for Somali Refugees.” Of that family, one son was convicted of assault with a firearm, another of “aggravated assault for shooting a man in November 2020” and the 19-year-old was the grandson of that same family. The teen had allegedly become a member of a Somali gang that stole cars while “wearing surgical gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints behind” and two of them had attacked a man in broad daylight while wearing ski masks. Mubarak had been born in a refugee camp before his family was resettled in America where his “older and younger siblings” spent time in jail, while he turned to selling drugs. The reporting on the incident and other violent encounters in Burlington are littered with mentions of drug dealing, stolen cars and guns, shootings in garages and names like Mohamed, Ahmed Mohamed, Badal Khadka and Abukar. Abukar Hilowle was accused of a few shootings, including one in which he allegedly shot the driver of the car he was in, resulting in a car crash, and another in which he shot two middle-aged American men on the street, one of whom had told him to “chill”, but the Muslim perpetrator claimed that he was responding to “racial slurs” by his two victims. In 2022 it was reported that, “by mid-summer, about half of the city’s gunfire incidents were connected to a small group of new American young men.” The inaccurate euphemism “new Americans“ was being used to refer to Somali and other often Muslim African immigrants. The perps are usually repeat offenders who wander in and out of the justice system. In 2020, another Somali was arrested for aggravated assault during a fight over drugs. By 2022, when he was accused of trying to shoot his brother, he had racked up 47 police contacts and 11 arrests. Despite being briefly charged with attempted murder, his family refused to testify and he received a plea deal last year for time served. Mayor Miro Weinberger however has claimed that the role of migrant settler teens in the wave of violence is not “particularly relevant”. When the three Arab Muslim men were shot, State’s Attorney Sarah George rushed to claim, without a shred of evidence, that, “there is no question this was a hateful act.” But the Soros DA has been accused of giving violent drug gang members a pass for the sake of social justice. Burlington’s crime level rose sharply after the City Council had voted to defund 30% of the police department during the peak of the BLM race riots. Burlington City Councilor Ali Dieng, an African Muslim immigrant who has run for mayor, has attacked the police while introducing resolutions to boycott Israel and has urged funding for social services to explore the “root causes” of the violence by members of his community. Only a few hundred Somali Muslims were resettled in Burlington with horrifying consequences. The question in Burlington, VT and across a nation under siege by hate, extremism, violence, crime and terror spread by first, second and third generation ‘refugees’ is how much more can we take, how many more lives can we lose and how long can we go on living this way? https://nypost.com/2024/01/22/business/in-n-out-burger-in-oakland-to-close-doors-for-good-over-of-out-of-control-crime-company-says/ In-N-Out Burger in Oakland to close doors for good over of out-of-control crime, company says In-N-Out Burger’s only location in Oakland is closing after the cherished fast-food joint decided it could no longer risk the safety of fed-up workers and patrons in the city plagued by recent crime. The location will shut its doors in March — despite the burger spot turning a profit — because of the constant crime in the community, In-N-Out Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick said in a sudden announcement over the weekend. The fast food joint has been in the California city for 18 years. “Despite taking repeated steps to create safer conditions, our Customers and Associates are regularly victimized by car break-ins, property damage, theft, and armed robberies,” Warnick wrote, according to CBS East Bay, which obtained the announcement. “Additionally, this location remains a busy and profitable one for the company, but our top priority must be the safety and wellbeing of our Customers and Associates – we cannot ask them to visit or work in an unsafe environment,” he said. Data released by Oakland police at the start of the new year showed robberies increased 38% from 2022 to 2023, ABC 7 Bay Area reported. Burglaries jumped 23% year-to-year and motor vehicle theft spiked 44%, the data showed. Workers at Oakland’s In-N-Out can either transfer to another one of the company’s fast-food restaurants or accept a severance package. https://www.breitbart.com/sports/2024/01/20/the-kingdom-belongs-to-you-lord-ravens-john-harbaugh-opens-post-game-presser-by-reading-bible-verse/ ‘The Kingdom Belongs to You, Lord’: Ravens’ John Harbaugh Opens Post-Game Presser by Reading Bible Verse On Saturday, the Baltimore Ravens won their biggest game since they last won the Super Bowl over ten years ago. In a recent update, In-N-Out Burger, a popular fast food chain, disclosed its decision to shutter its only outlet in Oakland, California, citing increasing criminal activities posing a risk to its employees and patrons. The alarming crime rates in the local neighborhood are said to be the driving force behind this strategic decision. As reported by The Mercury News, data from the Oakland Police Department reveals an unsettling 38% uptick in robberies and a 23% rise in burglaries from 2022 to 2023. The troubled eatery resides just a short distance from Oakland International Airport, meaning the proximity to a key transport hub has not deterred criminal activities. Denny Warnick, the Chief Operating Officer, made the concerning announcement, saying that despite numerous attempts to improve the safety situation, the location continues to face crime-related problems such as vehicle break-ins, property damage, theft, and even armed robberies. In fact, the circumstances had severely deteriorated to the point where security guards, in a comment to a local publication, disclosed they filed more theft reports originating at this In-N-Out Burger location than any other property they oversee. These security officers indicated that they witnessed approximately five burglaries at the venue on a 'regular' basis. The establishment will cease operations officially from Sunday, March 24, 2024. It represents a significant blow to the local community that has supported the location for over 18 years. Warnick expressed gratitude towards the supportive community, acknowledging the negative consequences this closure would have on the store's associates and their families. Stressing the business' ethical obligations towards its associates and customers, Wranick stated, 'Our top priority must be the safety and well-being of our customers and associates – continuing activities in an unsafe environment is something we cannot ask them to partake in. Although this location was indeed a profitable one for us, revenue cannot and must not take precedence over safety.' While the closure undoubtedly results in job disruption for the restaurant's employees, In-N-Out Burger has made provisions to reassign them to a nearby location of the brand. Alternatively, the associates are offered a severance deal to help them navigate this challenging period. Throughout its presence in Oakland, In-N-Out Burger has been a staunch supporter of the local community, with a track record of philanthropic initiatives dating back to even before the opening of the now-closing location. However, with the imminent closure, the burger chain will cease to carry out business activities in the area. The company affirmed its continued dedication to Oakland, outlining that although direct business operations will halt, In-N-Out Burger Foundation's charitable activities in the locale will persist. Its Slave 2 Nothing Foundation will also continue its mission in the region, ensuring the brand's goodwill and commitment to the community continues unhindered. Despite the somber news of the closure, Warnick gave reassurances that the company remains committed to its patrons and employees. Their well-being will always be a central focus, and this closure is seen as a necessary step to uphold this promise. Oakland's rising crime statistics undoubtedly played a significant part in this strategic business decision. As a responsible entity, In-N-Out Burger took the decision factoring in not just business performance parameters, but also concerns over staff and customers' safety. The fast food chain's withdraw from Oakland speaks volumes about the security concerns businesses confront in the city. This move also underscores the need for more assertive crime prevention measures to ensure businesses can function and thrive in safe environments. The closure, while a step back for In-N-Out Burger, is expected to be a wake-up call for the local administration. The issues of law and order disrupting business operations underscore the criticality of a swift and impactful response from the local law enforcement agencies. Despite the challenges brought on by the closure, In-N-Out Burger has demonstrated well-balanced crisis management. The company's attention to employees through job relocation opportunities and severance packages reflects not only its responsibility as an employer but also its humane approach in difficult times. The situation paints a realistic picture of the challenges businesses face in struggling neighborhoods. The inability to assure adequate safety measures for employees and customers can lead to such difficult decisions like the one In-N-Out Burger had to take. Although set back by the situation in Oakland, In-N-Out Burger still holds on to its commitment to the community. This exemplifies the company's dedication and resilience, carrying its purpose forward through charity work even as its business operations are compelled to withdraw. And in his post-game presser, coach John Harbaugh knew exactly who to thank for it. After the Ravens rallied from a 10-10 tie at halftime to thoroughly dominate the second half on their way to a 34-10 victory, Harbaugh opened his presser not by complimenting his future MVP quarterback (probably) but by thanking his Creator. https://twitter.com/i/status/1748892900195438908 - Play Video The verse is from 1 Chronicles 29: 11-13. Harbaugh’s bold statement of faith comes a week after NBC’s official Sunday Night Football account edited out Texans quarterback CJ Stroud’s comments where he said, “All glory to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” following Houston’s defeat of the Cleveland Browns. The Ravens coach wasn’t the only member of the Harbaugh family to speak out in defense of faith this week. This time I'm here in the studio with Hollie Warnick, and we decided to take a little time to hit record. Hollie is an author who created a dream journal, a podcaster, and a mom of four. She's also a fun, playful person who exudes vibrancy. She's felt free to let that authentic part of herself out more and more over the years. If you haven't read “Healing Through Broken Relationships” yet, I highly recommend it—and not just because I collaborated on it. These stories are phenomenal. It's so significant and moving to hear the stories right from the people who experienced them. It really highlights various types of relationships too. Recently I've noticed a validity to consistency. Actually, this was highlighted by my husband who noted that I didn't crash before a recent podcast. When you keep at something, it helps you expand outside what you're used to. It helps you get out of your own box. Hollie is right in it with me. She also sees the excitement of being on the edge; the precipice of what's next. When she's at the Grand Canyon, she gets this sense she wants to jump off and fly (but promises that she always remembers gravity isn't on her side). There's a sense that with this expansion comes a proliferating love and joy. It's gravity versus freedom versus movement. They can all exist at once. What's most interesting is that when we are expanding into a new space, we don't even know what's there yet. I know what I don't know, but in this transformative space, you can ask to be shown. Ruthanne Warnick is an advocate of capturing family stories and experiences to connect the generations and sharing words of the heart through legacy letters. As a Family L.E.G.A.C.Y. Guide, Ruthanne helps individuals¬¬ glean the most important stories, experiences¬, and words of love to create a non-financial legacy of generational wealth. When combined with photos, they create a lasting family treasure, and, as she puts it, “If a picture is worth a thousand words, a picture plus the words is priceless.” As some of Ruthanne's family members passed away, she began to realize how many family stories died with them and how valuable the stories and words that she did have would become. After becoming a certified Guided Autobiography instructor in 2012, Ruthanne founded Capture the Journey to help others take action and avoid the regret of waiting until it's too late. With that goal in mind, Ruthanne speaks to audiences of all sizes, conducts workshops which are also available to groups and organizations, and creates guidebooks and other resources. In addition to her legacy work, Ruthanne's experience over the past 30 years has included non-profit administration, as well as volunteer leadership in a national women's organization. Advancing from the local to the regional and then to the national level of leadership, Ruthanne has engaged, mentored, and trained hundreds of other women to become leaders themselves. "As I was packing to go home early from my mission, I saw my Book of Mormon on my bed. I jumped on top of my bed and I clenched the Book of Mormon with both hands. I remember calling out to God "Is this book true or not? I need to know!" The next thing that happened was a wave of the spirit hit me, and then another wave, and another wave. For about two minutes the strongest spiritual wave just kept hitting and every wave was getting stronger and stronger and stronger. Right then I was told by the Spirit, you have been led here. Like D&C 112:10. That scripture is one of my favorite scriptures because I realized I had been led to that point. And that is when I knew I could never deny that experience at that time. I knew it was true and I could never deny that moment that happened in that little trailer."

I am welcoming Hollie Warnick in this episode to talk about empowerment and the power of saying yes. Hollie is a behavioral kinesiologist, author, healer, and mother. She creates art, coursework, journals, and more for wellness and enjoyment. Hollie is also the host of the “Hollie Would” podcast where she takes listeners on a playful, spiritual journey each episode while encouraging others to be authentic and show up in life as they truly are. Growing up, Hollie experienced hardships that shaped the person she's become today. Her mother was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (DID). Watching her mother struggle led her to experience the world through another person's eyes. She ended up going to a specific type of therapy that took her out of victim mode and into feeling empowered, which is the therapy she practices today: behavioral kinesiology. Last year, Hollie started saying yes more. In the past, saying no felt safer. She realized she could create the time and space to allow creations to be brought out through her. Hollie is willing to say yes to all things in the creative realm, which led her to writing, podcasting, and more. In motherhood and in life, it takes a lot of energy to try and maintain control. The truth is that as much as you try, you can't control everything. If Hollie can share one message today, it's encouragement to say yes more. You never know what's going to come from saying yes. For 17 years he hid behind his wealth and success as he had multiple affairs. When he decided it was time to come clean and change, he realized that the Truth is actually a declaration of war because most people can't handle the truth. Dr Mitch asks the tough questions about trust, truth, and how Nick was able to put his life back together after years of damage. The Program:www.reprogrameverything.comCopyright 2022, Truth Talks Media LLC., All Rights Reservedwww.truthtalks.com
