Send us a textWhen April Lawyer opened Vanilla in Bend's Old Mill District back in 2005, she was still racing professionally as a downhill mountain biker. Today, as her boutique celebrates nearly 20 years in business, her remarkable journey from action sports athlete to successful entrepreneur reveals how our past experiences shape unexpected futures.Growing up in Big Bear Lake, California, April's early entrepreneurial spirit emerged through a childhood lemonade stand that evolved into selling treats from her bedroom window. Her introduction to snowboarding came through free ski days at the local mountain, sparking a passion that would lead to professional career. Meeting legendary snowboarder Janna Meyen became a pivotal moment, offering April both friendship and mentorship. The 1997 Winter X Games in her hometown of Big Bear was a defining moment for April, as she became the only female athlete to compete in both snowboarding and mountain biking. April's talent, work ethic and the media spotlight opened doors that took her across the globe, riding on both snow and dirt. However, a serious crash at the 1999 X Games in Crested Butte led to a head injury, gradually shifting her focus toward mountain biking.During her eleven years racing professionally, April developed valuable relationships with brands and gained experience in product development. After witnessing a friend's serious accident, she began contemplating her future beyond racing. Working at a friend's boutique had given her a taste of retail, and the seed of an idea began to form. With remarkable determination, April secured a space in Bend's Old Mill District before she even had a business name. Opening Vanilla while still racing professionally, she initially kept her athletic background separate, wanting the store to stand on its own merits. Today, the boutique has become a beloved Bend institution known for both its carefully curated merchandise and the genuine community April has fostered.Through April's story, we see how the skills developed in one arena—determination, authenticity, community-building, and resilience—can translate into success in entirely different ventures. Her journey reminds us that sometimes our most meaningful chapters come after following unexpected paths. The Circling Podcast is proud to be in partnership with Bend Magazine. Send us a textI recently came across the idea that photography is a universal language, one that transcends borders and can be understood by anyone, anywhere in the world. It's fascinating to think of the camera as an instrument that teaches us how to truly see the world, even when we're not actively using it.In episode 59 of Bend Magazine's The Circling Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with professional photographer Ben Kitching. We discussed the evolution of his passion for outdoor adventure and how his life's journey has enabled him to turn this passion into a thriving career as an adventure photographer.Ben shared the story of how, while in college, he made the bold decision to shift his focus from attending medical school to pursuing a life dedicated to the outdoors. This choice allowed him to deepen his knowledge and technical skills in the wild. He also talked about how his experience working as a wilderness therapy guide helped him develop a level of emotional fluency that, when combined with his technical expertise, makes him well-suited to work with a diverse range of athletes—whether they're in the mountains, on a river, or climbing a multi-pitch route.Last year, Ben embarked on a personal project that centers on both professional and amateur outdoor adventure athletes. His goal is to share the inspiration he regularly draws from his subjects. Through dynamic and engaging photography, combined with a unique storytelling approach, the Oregon Outdoor Athlete Project showcases individual adventurers in their natural environments, highlighting their talents and sharing the personal motivations behind their lifestyles. Each athlete's story offers a glimpse into the opportunities for growth that their outdoor pursuits provide.Ben, thank you for your time. It was a pleasure speaking with you, and I look forward to following your continued successes.https://www.benkitchingphotography.comhttps://www.oregonoutdoorathleteproject.com/https://www.murillophoto.com/The Circling Podcast is proud to be in partnership with Bend Magazine. On episode 46 of Bend Magazine's the Circling Podcast, we finish a two-part series highlighting just some of those in leadership roles at one of Central Oregon's most popular recreational resources, Mt. Bachelor. Though the conversations recorded for this episode occurred prior to the last several storm cycles in the month of January, the content on this episode couldn't be more relevant. On the second episode in the series, designed to supplement our January/February cover story written by Tim Neville, I start with a great conversation with Director of Base Operations, Ryan Gage. Following my chat with Gage, Alicia Smith and I shoot the breeze in the old maintenance building lunchroom, where she shares her story of how she became the lift Maintenance Electrical Supervisor and gives us a new level of appreciation for just how much effort goes into getting the lifts spinning every morning, especially during a big storm cycle. Lastly, I record my first episode in the cockpit of a snow cat with Grooming manager Ben Suratt, as he works on building up the onramp at the bottom of the new Skyliner lift, all while providing a new level of understanding to just how much the grooming department does, both winter, summer, spring, and fall. For many in our community, myself included, Mt. Bachelor has played a key role in why we live here as it provides some of the best skiing, snowboarding and mt. biking in the Pacific Northwest. As is often the case, it's the individuals behind the scenes, who work hard to provide an experience that many of us can take for granted, if we're not careful. Gage, Alicia, Ben, and everyone works hard for Mt. Bachelor, Thank you. When the mountains call, you answer. That's exactly what happened to Mt. Bachelor Sr. Mountain operations manager Betsy Norsen, choosing powder over the courtroom, and it's a decision that's echoed in the stories you'll hear on this first episode in a two part series. Hear from Mt. Bachelor's dedicated ski patrol director, Dave Thomas, and the hearts behind the Avalanche Dog Program, Betsy Norsen and Drew Clendenen as they share their thoughts on creating a career in the mountains and the life events that have led them there. On episode 36 of The Circling Podcast, I have the privilege of sitting down with long time Central Oregonians, Lev and Kirin Stryker, owners and operators of Cog Wild bicycle tours and Shuttles. Lev and Kirin share their story of how they landed in Bend back in the 90's, and the many life steppingstones that have led them to where they are today. Currently operating out of the LOGE, formally the Entrada Lodge, off of Century Drive, Kirin, Lev, and the rest of the Cog Wild team provide daily guided rides, skills instruction, and regular shuttles to the popular trial-heads around Bend and Oakridge, as well as guided multi-day MTB adventures on the backcountry trails throughout Oregon. In addition to professional mountain bike instruction and guiding, Cog Wild provides opportunity to learn about the rich natural and cultural history of Central Oregon while strongly promoting, encouraging, and regularly participating in trail and land stewardship. Kirin, Lev, Thank you for intention that you put into how you run Cog Wild. To borrow an idea from Rick Ruben, Though a business may have a number of goals and motivations, there is only one intention. This is the grand gesture of the brand. After talking with you and so many others, I could make a good argument that your grand gesture is inspired by stewardship. Stewardship for the trails that we use and the land on which they are built. And Stewardship for the community by providing a fun, safe, educational, and inclusive experience for those both new and old to Central Oregon and for those both new and old to the wonderful sport of cycling. Approximately 15 miles outside of Dayville Oregon, Murderers Creek flows into the South Fork of the John Day River. Approximately 5 miles up Murderers Creek I recorded a podcast with my old friend Jason Darrah. While huddled under the canopy of Jason's custom-built Ford E350 4x4 van as a thunder storm brewed in the distance, Jason shares his story of how, over the past ten years, he has evolved into a content creator who has developed quite the following on his YouTube channel, Primal Outdoors. With nearly a quarter million regular followers, Jason combines his love of videography, photography, van living and overlanding while creating regular content that entertains, educates, and informs, as he continues his nomadic lifestyle. Drifting among the hundreds of thousands of square miles of national forests, wilderness and public lands that are unique to Oregon and the Pacific NW, Jason has become a significant ambassador for the health and stewardship of our public lands. In addition to Primal Outdoors, Jason has created a new platform, van-camping.com, where members can say goodbye to commercial interruptions, access GPS data from Jason's recommended overlanding routes, participate in annual camp outs and have access to Jason through the members only forum. Thanks for the invitation to join you in Eastern Oregon Jason, It's clear to me that you channel is becoming less and less about you and more about the experiences you're having along the way as you encourage others to explore the great outdoors of our great state all while demonstrating and advocating public land stewardship. On episode 34 of The Circling Podcast, I have the privilege of sitting down with my friend Kyle Mcleod to talk about, well, a lot. In October of 2022, Kyle published the first episode of his podcast, “Small Market Startup.” On his show, Kyle features interviews with experts in their respective fields as he explores what's required to balance the demands of entrepreneurship, product and business development with quality of life, family, and recreation. Moving to Bend in 2017 Kyle has not only fallen in love with Central Oregon, but regularly invests in it, as he organizes and hosts two community groups that meet regularly, focusing on bringing together local software developers and entrepreneurs by creating space where those with similar interests can meet network, and learn. During our conversation, Kyle takes the opportunity to ask me some really thoughtful questions as we hit on subject matter ranging from, just how thankful I am to the sport of snowboarding to the launch of my own startup, Story Booth. Yo Kyle, this was a fun one. Thanks for what you're doing and how you're doing it. I really enjoyed our conversation and I look forward to many more my friend. Every so often, if we're in tune, the flow of life allows for our paths to cross with others who leave us wanting to learn more. I had the privilege of meeting one such person earlier this year during the Creativity Shakeout Tuesday morning group run along the Deschutes river. Mark Jamnik is a local artist who, like his art, has layers to his life story that have led him to Bend where, among many other things, he's sharing the gift of Subliminal Story Art. Inspired by his own life experience, Mark creates abstract art inspired by the conscience and unconscious stories underneath layers of acrylic paint on each of his pieces. Mark allows the emotion, words and themes of each life story to inform each piece he creates. Last year, Mark started offering Paint With The Artist, a community workshop where Mark offers the opportunity for others to create their own self-inspired pieces of abstract art and in so doing experience the beauty of depth that lies deep underneath each of our lives. On episode 33, Mark and I sit down at the Work Collective where Mark shares his passion to make art more approachable, interactive and understandable for those in our community. Mark shares more of his unique life story that has brought him to where he is today and the why behind what he does. Thanks for everything Mark I'm inspired by both Robert Frost and S.E. Hilton when I say, “Stay Gold Mark, Stay Gold.”Thanks for listening to The Circling Podcast. On July 6th 2021 the Creativity Shakeout Run Club held its first organized gathering designed to connect and lift up creatives in Central Oregon. The Creativity Shakeout is a run and walking club designed to inspire creativity through movement and connection with other creative personalities in the community. Founded by local artist and illustrator, Megan Marie Myers, The Shakeout allows creatives of all types and talents a consistent space to meet new friends and collaboration partners, share information, experiences, and resources, and learn about creative hobbies and careers across a variety of industries, all while getting some exercise along the Deschutes River. On episode 32 of The Circling Podcast, Megan and I have a great conversation at Dudley's Bookshop in Downtown Bend. Megan shares her story of her relationship with her own creativity and how the steppingstones of life have led her to Bend where she is growing as an artist and business owner. Megan's popular projects are inspired by the outdoors and the connection we have to our surroundings and to each other. Megan talks about the inspiration behind the Creativity Shakeout and how it was grown from a desire to give back to her creative community, and that, she has. Thanks for the coffee and the conversation Megan. I really enjoyed this one and look forward to Tuesday morning run club and following your growth and success as an artist, illustrator and storyteller. Thanks for listening to The Circling Podcast. Just three short years after furnishing home number one, the Central Oregon non-profit, Furnish Hope, recently furnished home #1000. Furnish Hope, whose mission is to Furnish empty houses for those in need, was established in 2019 by long time Central Oregon resident Megan Martin. On episode 31 of The Circling Podcast, Megan shares the vision of Furnish Hope, a vision where marginalized families in our community have a place to call home by transforming empty houses into warm, welcoming homes for those in need of furniture and household essentials. Recently Furnish Hope opened a new retail boutique in the Old Iron Works Art District in Bend. Through the resale of community donated upscale home furnishings and décor, this brick-and-mortar storefront aides in supporting the mission and is proving to be a unique way for Furnish Hope recipients to choose the finishing touches for their homes. Thanks Megan. Thank you for taking the time to share your story and the story of Furnish Hope. On episode 30 of The Circling Podcast, I sit down with Josh Suran, the human on the other side of the trending social medial handle @josh_reports. A Central Oregon native, Josh delivers daily micro doses of amateur weather reporting along with an up to date ski report, usually from the lifts of Mt. Bachelor and always with the highest level of stoke and sometimes a beard braid. Josh Shares his story of growing up in Central Oregon, his love of being outside, the nature of his positive vibes and the life experiences that have led to him developing quite the following on multiple social media platforms. Josh and I recorded this episode in the back of his retired 2009 Ford F-350 Ambulance on the streets of Tumalo Oregon. I apologize for the hum of the ambulance generator charging in the background on occasion, but it adds to the experience. Yo Josh, thank you. Thank you for the fun lines today and the conversation tonight. I'm excited to cheer for your successes as you continue to deliver daily doses of stoke that truly seems to flow from a thankful heart. In 2007, Kevin Boss was drafted to the New York Giants and went on to win a Super Bowl later that season. After 6 seasons in the NFL, Kevin and his family moved back to their home state of Oregon and In 2014, Kevin opened BOSS Sports Performance. Nearly ten years later, BOSS has grown to become a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning facility, inspired both by the professional facilities Kevin trained in during his time in the National Football League, and the no gimmicks, no fads and no shortcuts mindset he was exposed to throughout his athletic career. Today, Kevin and his team train athletes of all ages and ability levels, helping them reach their fullest athletic potential by practicing science backed, evidenced based strength and conditioning techniques in a safe, positive and encouraging atmosphere. Thanks for your time Kevin. It seems clear that you're making the transition well from world class athlete to world class boss, no pun intended. On episode 28, I'm joined by longtime central Oregonian Pete Alport. An award-winning photographer, videographer and producer, Pete has called Central Oregon home since moving in 1994 after a traumatizing childhood growing up in Portland Oregon. Pete has, and continues to influence and shape the growth of Central Oregon through the quality and creativity of the content he captures. With subjects ranging from many of the world's best outdoor athletes to some of the most remote landscapes in our backyard, Pete's work resonates strongly with both those who call Central Oregon home and those who appreciate the magic found in nature. In 1975 Robert Rube was in 5th grade and moved to Oahu where his dad was stationed in the United States Army. Living in Hawaii during his adolescence Robert developed a relationship with the ocean and his surfboard that has been a consistent influence in his life. In 2004, while on a surf trip to Costa Rica, Robert was introduced to the concept of “Pura Vida.” Directly translated as “pure life” or “simple life,” Pura Vida is better understood as way of life. A way of life that left such an impression on Robert that in 2005, he and his business partner, long time NW surfer Al Krieger, opened Pura Vida Surf Shop in the small town of Philomath Oregon. In 2016, Pura Vida Surf Shop moved costal and is now located in Otter Rock Oregon, just across the street from the stairs leading down one of Oregon's most popular central coast breaks. Join me on episode 26, as I have the good fortune to sit down with Robert and hear the story behind the shop that exists to bring the spirit of Pura Vida to Oregon Surfing. In the summer of 2016 a small, unassuming, abandoned storage warehouse near the Old Mill District was reclaimed, restored and brought back to life. On July 4th, Spoken Moto, a feel-good, comfortable gathering space influenced by old school craftsmanship, vintage motorcycles, hand roasted coffee, craft beer and quality goods, turns seven years old. The refined rustic venue is also a great host to many community events including live music, art shows, movies, trivia and much more. On episode 22, General managers Pete West and Breezie Dueber take a moment to sit down and share the story of Spoken Moto, past, present, and future. Recorded next to some vintage builds in the Pine Shed, I get to know Pete and Breezie and understand the vision of Spoken Moto. Be it an abandoned warehouse, vintage motorcycle or an old friendship, Spoken works to reclaim, restore and bring new life, beauty and purpose to what was once forgotten. In the mid 1980's as the timber and mill industry in Central Oregon was in a downturn, a group of local community members began providing free nutritious meals in a safe and caring environment to anyone in need. 36 years later that small group has evolved into the present-day Family Kitchen organization and continues the mission by providing over 9,000 meals a month to those in our region feeling the reality that comes with food insecurity. On episode #20, I have the pleasure of sitting down with Donna Burklo, Program Director for Family Kitchen and Family Kitchen volunteer and community member Ruth Williamson to discuss the role Family Kitchen plays as we see an increase of both food and housing insecurity in Central Oregon. Donna, Ruth thanks for sharing your time and talents with me, I learned a lot from you both. To say that the work Family Kitchen and all its volunteers do is amazing is simply an understatement. In the spring of 1977, the population of Bend Oregon was roughly 16,500. On the first Saturday in May that year, the first annual Pole-Pedal-Paddle was held as a fundraiser for the local youth Mitey mite ski program. The late great Jenny Sheldon was the head coach of the Mitey mites and to raise money for her racers, Jenny organized the first PPP after being inspired by a similar race during her time in Jackson Hole WY. 45 years later, the PPP is back, and after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, many in Central Oregon couldn't be happier. On Episode #19, Jenny's daughter, Katie, shares her family's story of how the PPP came to be, some of the shenanigans associated with the early days of the race, and what she believes her mom would be most excited about for the return of this multi-discipline race that has long since become a community staple of Central Oregon. Also joining us, Dr. Megan Karnopp. Born and raised in Bend, Megan made her way through the ski racing ranks, starting as a mighty mite and ending her skiing career racing for the University of Utah prior to becoming a Pediatrician. Like Katie's Family, Megan's parents were deeply invested in Central Oregon. Both of Megan's parents were fundamental in the transition of the Skyliner Ski club becoming the Mount Bachelor Sports Education Foundation and benefactor of the Pole-Pedal-Paddle. Megan's late father Dennis represented the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs for the majority of his legal career and was proud of his involvement in several landmark legal wins for the Tribes. Katie, Megan, thank you both for sharing so much of your family's history which has clearly helped shape the community that so many of us value today. In 1987, Kris Jamieson made the full time move to Bend Oregon to spend more time in the mountains while pursuing a career in the outdoor sports industry. 35 years later Kris still calls Central Oregon home, and for good reason. Join me on episode 17 as I had the privilege to chat with Kris about a variety of topics ranging from the durability and sustainability of outdoor retail equipment, the role of social media in our community, being one of the original employees at GoPro, the Democratic process and much more. Known to many as Jaymo, Kris now spends his time between the studios of the Bend Radio Group, where he is regularly found hosting on 92/9 FM and running his multimedia production company, Jaymovision. Wisdom is largely agreed upon as the ability to use knowledge and experience to make good life decisions and judgements. With that said, and though he'd likely dismiss it, Kris possesses a lot of wisdom and in this episode shares a lot of knowledge and experiences that we can all learn from. In 1976, a Washington State juvenile court judge recognized that he had insufficient information when making a life changing decision regarding the future of a three-year-old little girl who had suffered from child abuse. Within a year that very same judge, Justice David Soukup, launched the nation's first program designed to promote volunteer advocacy so every child who has experienced abuse or neglect can be safe, have a permanent home and the opportunity to thrive. Now a National Program, CASA, short for Court Appointed Special Advocate is a Seattle based association training volunteers who provide a powerful voice and a meaningful connection for children who have experienced abuse and neglect and are in the foster care system. On Episode 16, I was fortunate to chat with CASA of Central Oregon Executive Director Heather Dion and Volunteer Advocate Sandy Coats. Heather and Sandy share their personal stories with how they ended up in Bend and how they each landed in their current role with CASA of central Oregon. Join me as I get to know some amazing individuals in our community that are doing some amazing work. Thanks ladies, it was a true pleasure and I appreciate what you do! In 2005 Erin Cole-Baker and her husband Bruce discovered Bend OR after attending the Sisters Folk Festival. Erin called Central Oregon home for six years and, according to GO! Magazine, quickly established herself as “One of the more constant and compelling voices on the Central Oregon music scene.” After releasing two albums in the States, Erin and Bruce returned to New Zealand to raise a family. Recorded in Erin's home studio with our longtime friend Erin Zurflu, We take a stroll down memory lane and learn how the Erin's met, formed a lifelong friendship, became a staple in the Central Oregon music scene and ultimately how Erin Cole-Baker started a solo music career that brought her back to Central Oregon from New Zealand right at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Known by those closest to her as always following her dreams and understanding the value in being vulnerable, Erin talks about the benefit of choosing to do things that are hard and challenging, knowing that's when the magic happens. Erin and her band are starting to book gigs and play live shows after a long pause in live music due to the pandemic and she couldn't be more thankful. Thanks for your time and authenticity Erin. I'm super proud of you and excited for you and your band as the future is looking bright. Thanks for listening to The Circling Podcast.
