His father is the famous Greg Morris from the original "Mission: Impossible" show, and we spoke with his sister Iona Morris a few months back on this show, so acting is in his family's blood! Phil has been in the Star Trek franchise FIVE times, starting when he was a child in the original series in the season 1 episode "Miri." He explains how he got cast on the show and the scene they didn't warn any of the kids about! Over 20 years later, Phil returned to Trek and worked face to face with William Shatner in "Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock" and recalls the brilliant piece of direction Leonard Nimoy told him before his scene. Fast forward a few years later, and Phil made his way to DS9 in "Looking for Par'Mach in All The Wrong Places," where he tells us about becoming a Klingon, learning to fight with a batleth against Armin Shimmerman, and being directed by Andrew Robinson AKA Garak. One season later, he returned as the Third Remata Klan in "Rocks and Shoals" as a Jem'Hadar, and Phil tells us what it's like to work with the imposing Avery Brooks.  Finally, his "Star Trek Voyager" appearance as Lt. John Kelly in "One Small Step," what it was like being directed by his acting school classmate Robert Picardo, and what big emotions came up filming this episode. Plus, being Jackie Chiles on "Seinfeld," working with Angela Lansbury on "Murder, She Wrote" and Will Smith on "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," what he learned from his famous father and how the two of them got along on set for the "Mission: Impossible" reboot in 1988, Vandal Savage in Justice League animated series, and being on Doom patrol as Cyborg's dad, Silas Stone, and the story of the worst day he ever had on the job! While we record season 3, how about some classic episodes of Trek Untold that you may not have heard? We start off some encores of older shows with what was originally episode #5 from the summer of 2020 with our chat with Iona Morris!  How many actors can say they appeared on TOS and VOY? Not many, and today's guest is one of them. Iona Morris is the daughter of "Mission Impossible" star Greg Morris, and that led her to her acting debut on the TOS season one episode, "Miri." From there, acting would take a backseat to other things, but all roads eventually led back to performing in front of a lens, and Iona would make her return to Trek in the VOY two-parter "Workforce" over 30 years after her first appearance. We discuss being cast in these roles, what it was like on the set of TOS and how William Shatner was with kids, the on-screen moment from that episode that wasn't acting, sharing the screen with Robert Duncan McNeill in VOY, and what went wrong during her performance in that episode.  Plus, Iona talks about her enormous voiceover career in anime before it was in the mainstream, becoming the voice of Storm on the X-Men animated series from the 90s, being directed by horror icon Wes Craven, the valuable lesson she learned from Angela Lansbury on "Murder, She Wrote," acting on "Moesha" and "Homeboys in Outer Space," and being a part of the hit ABC series "Blackish." We're happy to debut a new podcast series in conjuction with the When It Was Cool network with the first episode of The Plot. What's that, you ask? It's going to be an examination of the spy/heist genre. It will look at film, television, comics, cartoons and whatever else that can fall under that umbrella. First up, we go to the very top of the genre for me, the original Mission Impossible TV show, which ran on CBS from 1966 to 1975. Naturally, we start with the Pilot, which starred Steven Hill as Dan Briggs, the team leader, along with regulars Barbara Bain, Greg Morris, Peter Lupus, Martin Landau and guest star Wally Cox. We look at the background on the show and then some brief chat about the episode itself, where the team goes to a Caribbean country to stop a dictator from using newly-acquired nuclear warheads against the United States. We also look at arguably the most-remembered episode of the show, Season 3's The Execution. We have Peter Graves in his second year as Jim Phelps, the regular team and guest villains Vincent Gardenia, Val Avery and Lew Askew. The team needs to get the goods on a mobster trying to control food prices and must get a hitman to rat out his boss by making him believe he is days away from being killed in the gas chamber. This episode was a little shorter than we planned, but didnt want to just add filler. It was the demo episode, so please forgive any hiccups or glitches. We'll be back soon with another episode. Thanks to Karl for the invitation. Make sure you sample the other shows on the When It Was Cool Network.

The optimal grease to use in power plant equipment is rarely contemplated by people other than truly dedicated operations and maintenance managers, and the workers on their teams who feel the pain when a piece of equipment breaks down due to inadequate lubrication. Yet, for those individuals, the choice of which grease to use in a component is an important decision. Selecting the right option could not only save energy, but also extend the maintenance interval and reduce the likelihood of equipment failure. “We spent a lot of years looking at: ‘Can you make a difference from an efficiency perspective based on the product that you choose?' And the answer is, unequivocally, yes,” Greg Morris, product application specialist for greases at Shell Americas, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. Morris suggested that synthetic greases are far superior to standard mineral-based formulations. “How do you get to a place where you have longer service intervals— you touch the equipment less often,” Morris asked. “You can go to a synthetic,” he said. “That changes everything.” If an original equipment manufacturer recommends relubrication every 1,500 hours using a mineral-grade grease, for example, you may be able to double that interval to 3,000 hours with a synthetic grease. “Using synthetics, you've gained something,” Morris said. “You're gaining oxidative stability. A lot of times there's mechanical stability that comes along with that. And, you also have thicker film at higher temperatures.” Extending preventive maintenance intervals also reduces the risk of human error. The less often workers have to touch a piece of equipment, the fewer chances there are for personnel to make a mistake, such as lubricating with the wrong grease, for example. “We don't have as many people working in the facility as we used to dedicated to doing just lubrication. So, you're doing more [work] with fewer people,” explained Morris. “If you can reduce the tasks that those folks have to do to maintain reliability, then you're helping yourself out as well.” Efficiency gains can be significant. Morris said 8% to 12% improvements in efficiency are common using synthetic greases. “Where does that show up? It shows up in temperature in the bearing,” Morris said. “If you go from a mineral grade to a synthetic, you can see a drop in temperature in the bearing, and nothing else has changed—you haven't changed the load, you haven't changed the speed, you haven't done anything else—what you see is, the lubricant is having that much of an impact.”

But that's only if we're talking about American television. Great Britain was ahead of the United States in this department by almost a decade. Rebecca asks when the "first consensualinterracial kiss" (kiss between dark skinned and light skinned actors) aired on American TV, since the Uhura/Kirk kiss was technically coerced by way of alien mind control in this particular episode. That's a harder question to answer. With these qualifiers, I couldn't find documentation of the "second interracial kiss" or the "first consensual interracial kiss." (If anyone out there has more on this, I'd be very interested to know the answer). Wikipedia has a fascinating entry on televised interracial kisses, documenting earlier examples (than the Uhura/Kirk kiss) of kisses between Asian and white actors and Hispanic and white actors (all light skinned actors) and examples on British television of kisses between actors with dark and light skin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_interracial_kiss_on_televisionTribe of Creepy Children: It's interesting to note that the actor who plays Jahn, Michael J. Pollard, was 27 at the time. He was pretty short, so he was able to play a teenager throughout his 20s. He played a lot of memorable side characters, including CW Moss in Bonnie and Clyde (which came out in 1967). He was in lots of other movies and shows, like Dick Tracey and Scrooged and Roxanne, the Steve Martin movie. You can google him.  The other kids are mainly the children of actors in Star Trek: William Shatner's daughters Lisabeth and Melanie, Grace Lee Whitney's son Scott, Vincent McEveety's son Steven, and Gene Roddenberry's daughters, Darleen and Dawn. Two other children, Phil and Iona Morris, were the children of Mission Impossible actor Greg Morris, and they later appeared in other Star Trek shows. Phil Morris was in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in a bit part and then was a guest star on Babylon 5, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager. Iona Morris was in a 2 part episode of Voyager but is mainly known as a voice actor. She was the voice for Storm in the animated X-Men series and in Spider Man: the Animated Series.

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 131, originally published in March 2013. Astrologer Jeff Harman is a second-generation astrologer with over 36 years of experience consulting with people from around the world on personal and business needs. Jason Hartman and Jeff Harman engage in a discussion of the world's possible economic future, and Jeff forecasts several future events based on global cycles, including a global electronic, cashless society by 2020. He says the next major alignment that is coming into play is 2020 and there is a big disruptive cycle coming up between now and 2015 that could bring a lot of turmoil in the financial markets that will lead to this cashless society. Jeff also explains how astrology has been used throughout history for advice on wars and other events, and the validity of ancient astrology versus the sun sign astrology that came about in the ‘60s. As Jeff explains, just like with physics, if an event or phenomenon is repeatable, it becomes something that can be relied upon or something that works, and it does have a very high degree of accuracy. Jeff spent many years in Beverly Hills and has clients in all areas of the entertainment industry.
