As Sven shares, it's not about avoiding the hard parts, but embracing them, for life's greatest lessons are taught through pain and fear.In our discussions, we tackle the roles of ego and warrior mentality, and why it's essential to let life break us down at times. We uncover the importance of vulnerability and authenticity, especially for men who often feel the pressure to be the stoic, 'tough guy'. Sven also opens up about his unique counseling approach, which begins with understanding one's life story as a significant step towards self-acceptance. He tells us how childhood traumas and parental neglect can influence our sense of self, and how confronting these issues can lead to a more authentic life.We then shift to explore the complexities of the parent-child relationship, the repercussions of abuse, and why inaction can be as harmful as the abuse itself. Sven urges us to embrace discomfort for personal growth, explaining how setting healthy boundaries and building a strong support system can be instrumental in healing. The conversation concludes with some powerful insights into how fear and pain can be our greatest teachers, equipping us with the tools to become more resilient. Believe it or not, being a dad has a much bigger effect on families than you can imagine. In this episode, Patrick Erlandson points out two key factors that have deeply motivated him to advocate the importance of a father's presence while an individual is growing up. First was the heartbreaking reality of human trafficking, especially the exploitation of children and weak people. He recognized a connection between the absence of fathers and the presence of fathers who engage in abusive behavior. And with that plays a vital factor in the increased vulnerability of individuals. Another reason is the effect of minimizing the role of fathers in early childhood development. Prisons are overflowing with fatherless individuals, runaways and dropout rates are alarming, and violence among fatherless children is prevalent. By giving importance to a father's role in the family and giving them the value and recognition that they deserve, the society can be a better and safer place for our children to live. Let's all start raising our sons to be positively inspired to take on fatherhood. Listen to Episode 181 to learn more!

Boys grow into men relating emotionally the only way they know, which is to dismiss or disapprove of their feelings or both. But what if more men could harness the power of vulnerability to ask for what you need or express your emotions without fear of rejection? I believe Vulnerability is one of the most powerful aspects of human relationships because it enhances love, empathy, and acceptance. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is having ripple effects across the globe, including the rural West. Natasha Erlandson and her husband Todd live in Southwest Colorado, but the two met years ago in Ukraine. And until just a few days ago, Natasha's parents still lived there. But they had to escape their hometown and make their way across eastern Europe by car - as refugees. Now, her parents are preparing for the last leg of their journey - a flight to America, and eventually living in Cortez. Today on the news, we hear about this family's experience. // Show Notes // Photo: Natasha Erlandson, pictured here at 12 years old, grew up in Kharkiv, Ukraine, which has been a target of heavy Russian attacks since the invasion of Ukraine began a few weeks ago. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common birth defects across the globe. Although prospects and survival rates are improving, there is scant understanding or help available to get children with CHD active. Many believe physical activity is risky or outright dangerous, and as a result, children with CHD are at risk of obesity and other chronic conditions later in life. Dr Marta Erlandson from the University of Saskatchewan has aided the creation of CHAMPS, an innovative program for children with CHD, where researchers and children are learning how to manage the disorder from each other.

This week, we explore concrete and person to person ways of serving low income people and the homeless. Our guest is Mary Agnes Erlandson. She directs St. Margaret's Center, a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles. The Center provides help to about 10,000 unduplicated individuals annually. Over the past 34 years, people with multiple needs have come to the Center for food, shelter, legal, medical, employment, housing, and education services. Erlandson counts on teams of volunteers ranging from active seniors to college students, as well as her small and dedicated staff. We'll be asking the following questions. As always, feel free to add your own.1. Mary Agnes, if we may, you are a native Angeleno. Could you tell us a bit about growing up here?2. You crossed paths with St. John Paul II during his visit to Ecuador in 1985. What memories do you have of that event?3. How did you come to be the director of St. Margaret Center? Could you manage the job without being bilingual?4. Over the past few decades in Los Angeles, you've witnessed so much—and now the Covid pandemic. What impact have these changes had on you and St. Margaret's?5. What factors have led the Center to offer everything from showers for the homeless to medical services, ESL classes, a food pantry, diaper distribution, utility bill relief, and many more?6. Let's talk money. How is St. Margaret's funded?7. Let's talk giving. How did this year's Christmas party go?8. Your work depends on volunteers. Where do they come from and what do they do?9. If you could have a heart to heart conversation with our current crop of political leaders, what would you tell them?10. The best exegesis shows that retirement is not a Biblical concept. So where do you see yourself ten years from now?

Most of us think “military aid” is something the U.S. provides to other nations, and don't realize that our own troops and their families are often hurting financially. Military pay rates are low. Many young, newly enlisted families qualify as “the working poor.” Multiple deployments can mean frequent relocation, leaving a civilian spouse to find a new job while the other is overseas. And if military pay gets messed up (it happens), the rent or mortgage still has to be paid; the kids need food and clothes. Christina Erlandson talks about how the nonprofit Military Assistance Mission steps in to help service members have one less worry. ______ Rise Grind Repeat Podcast powered by EIC Agency ______ Hosted by Dustin Trout Produced by Andrei Gardiola __________ Check out the full video episode at: https://bit.ly/3dlwjnJ https://spoti.fi/2Mgfpe6 https://apple.co/2MiQdUv For more information visit our website at https://eic.agency/ We are also on Instagram @EveryImpressionCounts
The hosts discuss four hypotheses for the arrival of humans into the New World: Beringian Land Bridge, Coastal Highway, Solutrean, and Oceanic. They discuss the early Paleoindian site complexes such as Folsom and Clovis in which David (allegedly) reveals the existence of the Clovis Organized Crime Syndicate. A large part of the episode centers around "pre-Clovis" sites and whether they would belong to the Coastal Highway or Solutrean hypotheses. According to Carlton, the Solutreans crossed the Atlantic to get that sweet, sweet Old Bay seasoning. #OldBayAllDay We wrap up the show with a discussion about which hypotheses each host believes explains the archaeological record best. Jenna Erlandson, Identity and Special Needs Son My time with Jenna Erlandson, learning about her sweet family left me feeling immense appreciation for the intimacy with which God knows us. Jeanna is married and has 3 children one of which is special needs. She and her husband got married knowing infertility was a reality that they would have to face. Then the impossible happened and she gave birth to a precious baby boy, Eli. A few months old and they began to notice some developmental concerns and through their inquiry found out he is special needs. We talked about the power of surrender and she made a distinction between struggle vs letting go and she referred us to a book by Nancy Guthrie, God Does His Best Work with Empty. She moved me when she said that the most painful thing for her right now is watching her son realize he's different. And she shared how God is glorified through Eli's life. Jenna also tackled some tough topics like did she or her husband sin or do something to offend God that Eli would be born with special needs. We tenderly touched on the topic of grieving all that she had envisioned for her first born son. As she and I talked about the various challenges that an active family faces, the questions she struggles with raising children, grieving what she originally envisioned for her family, I realized she was describing a strong understanding of who she is in Christ through the love that God has for Eli. There are so few things more beautiful than that! Enjoy this conversation with a precious, humble heart that chooses to be vulnerable to the good God she professes. This coming week on The Open Door we discuss Catholic journalism and publishing. We're keen to explore, as well, the media landscape in a time of cultural confusion. Our welcome guest is Greg Erlandson. In 2016 he became Editor in Chief of Catholic News Service. CNS serves Catholic publications and dioceses throughout the United States and around the world. For 15 years Erlandson was President and Publisher of the Our Sunday Visitor Publishing Division. He had served first as Editor in Chief at OSV Publishing. In 2014 he was one of six experts appointed by the Council of Cardinals to the Vatican Media Committee to propose reforms for the Vatican's media operations. He is co-author of Pope Benedict XVI and the Sexual Abuse Crisis: Working for Reform and Renewal (2010). Among the questions we'll ask him are the following. Please feel free to suggest others! (October 16, 2020)1. Can you give us an overview of Catholic journalism today, noting some of its highs and lows? What changes have your seen over the past several years?2. How fares Catholic publishing today? What do you see happening in the next decade?3. People first! What it is like for what some call “the ink-stained wretches” in Catholic journalism and publishing?4. Please outline for us Bishop Burbidge's new pastoral letter on communications.5. What factors come into play in the ever shrinking number of newspapers of every sort?6. Can you tell us about the challenges you see in the digital transformation of much of contemporary culture?7. Is there a contest, both visible and invisible, between the word and the image? Is there a way to integrate them?8. A final question: Who are some of the saints and heroes of Catholic journalism and publishing?

In this episode, Andrew is joined by Patrick Erlandson, who tackled the dangers of human trafficking and pornography. Sadly, this is still an issue that is rampantly plaguing our world, which gives us all the more reason and why it's crucial to shed some light on, spread awareness about, and stand up against it. One small, simple step is actually another huge step closer to saving one person from the tragedy of human trafficking. Know the problem exists so you can end it. Take actions by making someone matter, feeling valued and loved, valuing your integrity, and eliminating the vulnerability. Spread awareness by having the right spirit and motivation. We hope that this conversation enlightens us and serves as that one step closer to help end human trafficking. Courtney Love's band Hole released their second album, Live Through This one week after the death of Kurt Cobain, Love's husband and front man for the grunge giant Nirvana. Hole originated in the punk rock scene, but are often identified with the grunge movement due to Love's relationship with Cobain and their move to Washington to write this album. In addition to frontwoman Love, the band consisted of Eric Erlandson on lead guitar, Kristen Pfaff on bass, and Patty Schemel on drums. Love and Erlandson wrote the songs, and Pfaff and Schemel were newcomers to the group, replacing bassist Jill Emery and drummer Caroline Rue who had left over creative differences. The album was noted for a toned-down and more melodic approach to things than their debut effort. Themes of the album would revolve around aspects of Courtney Love's personal life, including relationships, motherhood, and post-partum depression. A controversy that plagued the album was that much of the work was ghost-written by Kurt Cobain. Band members and producers have consistently denied this, though it is perhaps understandable how a rumor like this would get legs, following on the heels of Cobain's suicide. The only connection between Cobain and the album was that he sang backing vocals on a couple of songs when they were in the recording studio. In fact, many of the tracks were performed during Hole's previous tour. While Live Through This is considered more melodic than their previous album, that is a relative measure - the album itself is still quite raw and gritty. That didn't keep it from becoming a critical and popular success, going multi-platinum by December 1994. Unfortunately, drummer Pfaff would not live to see this feat, having died of a heroin overdose in June, just before Hole was supposed to embark on a world tour. Courtney Love would continue through several iterations of Hole, and pursue songwriting, acting, a writer of multiple manga volumes and a memoir. VioletThis song is the opening track for the album. It was inspired by Love's relationship with Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, just prior to her relationship with Cobain. Love said this song was "about a jerk, I hexed him, and made him lose his hair." Miss WorldThe second track on the album was the first single. It is about a person who is loved by everyone, but is empty inside and drowning in depression. "I'm Miss World. Somebody kill me."Asking For ItThis deeper cut is about rape. Love talked about a time when she would stage dive, and found her clothes ripped off. Love felt like she was raped by the audience. Love's life and upbringing was a tumultuous one, with rebellion, drugs, and broken family relationships.Doll PartsThe second single from the album is likely the best known one. It reflects her insecurity with Kurt Cobain. Love and Cobain both went into rehab when Love was pregnant. Unfortunately Cobain would run away from the rehab center shortly before his suicide. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from Space Ghost for “Space Ghost Coast to Coast”This comedy spoof of a late night talk show was the first original series produced by the Cartoon Network. STAFF PICKS:“Player's Ball” by OutKastBrian brings us Southern Rap from Atlanta's own OutKast. The song discusses living in the south and living in the hip hop culture. This is off OutKast's debut album entitled "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik."“Rocks” by Primal ScreamBruce's staff pick is off Primal Scream's fourth album "Give Out But Don't Give Up." Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie originally formed this Scottish rock band with a psychedelic sound, but went more classic rock and blues with this album.“Found Out About You” by the Gin BlossomsRob's staff pick features the fourth single from the Gin Blossoms' second album, “New Miserable Experience.” The Gin Blossoms formed in Tempe Arizona in 1987, and were identified as alternative rock and “jangle pop.” The name comes from a picture of W.C. Fields describing his ruddy complexion. “Because the Night” by 10,000 ManiacsWayne's pick features a cover originally performed by The Patti Smith Group from 1978. Natalie Merchant fronts 10,000 Maniacs in an Unplugged version of this classic written by Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “Bad Girls”This instrumental was the soundtrack from a western featuring Madeliene Stowe, Andie MacDowell, and Drew Barrymore.

The Gracefully Aging Runner, was an idea I came up with for a 2019 podcast campaign. Although, this theme got put on the back burner in lieu of my current interest and theme called, “Runner GRIT”. Ironically though, when I read in an ‘Runner’s World’ magazine article about Larry Erlandson, the two topics immediately meshed … Continue reading "Runner’s GRIT Talks with Larry Erlandson" The post Runner’s GRIT Talks with Larry Erlandson appeared first on .

In 1835, a Native American woman was somehow left behind when her dwindling island tribe was transferred to the California mainland. She would spend the next 18 years living alone in a world of 22 square miles. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the poignant story of the lone woman of San Nicolas Island. We'll also learn about an inebriated elephant and puzzle over an unattainable test score. Intro: As construction began on Scotland’s Forth Bridge, engineers offered a personal demonstration of its cantilever design. In the 1880s, Manhattan's rationalist "Thirteen Club" held a dinner on the 13th of each month to flout superstition. Sources for our feature on the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island: Sara L. Att laga ett hål eller dra ut en tand kan kosta allt emellan några 100-lappar och flera tusen kronor.
