Why Small-Market Teams Let Dynasties Die

Are long-term mega free-agent deals actually overrated? The guys argue the real path to sustained success isn't stealing stars from big markets, it's keeping the ones you developed. From the Royals' post-2015 collapse to fears about Pittsburgh losing Paul Skenes, the debate centers on whether small-market teams are victims of the system… or guilty of letting their own windows slam shut. They break down the exhausting cycle teams like Tampa Bay live in, constantly trading great players before payday just to reload and survive, and whether that strategy dooms fans to permanent almost-contender status. Plus, callers weigh in on salary floors, cap incentives for homegrown players, and creative ways leagues could actually encourage teams to retain their stars without forcing reckless spending. And of course, the conversation takes a wild turn back to the Tony Clark scandal dominating headlines, proving once again that in baseball, the off-field chaos may have even bigger consequences than what happens on it. ⚾

Running a contracting business in a small town isn't glamorous—and Sheldon Gould doesn't pretend it is. With over 25 years in lawn care, snow removal, land leveling, and property maintenance, Sheldon shares what it actually takes to survive when competition is tight, prices keep climbing, and growth feels slow. This episode is for contractors who are still showing up every day and wondering how to build a business that lasts. Takeaways:✅ Longevity beats hype: Why staying profitable and trusted for decades matters more than fast growth✅ Small towns come with real limits: He breaks down what competition, undercutting, and pricing pressure look like when your market is under 1,000 people✅ Growth doesn't mean more machines: Sometimes one attachment or service tweak beats buying a whole new fleet✅ Why “local recognition” works better than big marketing numbers: How a few hundred local followers outperform thousands of random views.✅ Calculated risk vs. blind risk: Expanding only after demand shows up—not before—can keep you alive long enough to grow. Why It Matters:If you're grinding in a small market, feeling stuck, or wondering why growth feels harder than it should—this episode proves you're not broken, and neither is your business.Links:➡️ Check out Sheldon Gould's S&N Custom Lawn Care Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/sheldon.gould.9➡️ Shop Attachments: Build your business with the right attachments. https://www.skidsteernation.com➡️ Marketing Help: Marketing built for blue-collar contractors. https://getthrottledup.com/

This fintech platform disbursed ₹18,000 crore+ in loans and serves over 3 crore users across India. In this episode, we sit down with Dipesh Karki, Co-founder & CPTO of LenDenClub, to unpack how a Nepali founder built one of India's largest peer-to-peer lending platforms by focusing on systems, scale, and execution. Born into a middle-class family of teachers in Khotang, Dipesh began his journey with a scholarship to study engineering in India. Instead of looking West, he chose to build in India leveraging proximity, market depth, and a rapidly maturing fintech ecosystem. Today, LenDenClub has enabled ₹17,000–18,000 crore in loans, serves 30+ million customers, and is preparing for a potential IPO positioning itself as India's first listed P2P lending platform. Recruiting Conversations

What if your entire market has fewer than 100 LOs? Is hiring a recruiter still worth it? In this episode of Recruiting Conversations, I walk through the exact framework for determining whether a recruiter is the right move in a small market. I cover the systems, mindset, math, and sequencing that make it work, and share a real-world story of one leader who turned 85 LOs into 9 hires in 12 months. This isn't about headcount. It's about mastery, clarity, and building a system that multiplies your time. Episode Breakdown [00:00] The Question – Is it worth hiring a recruiter if I only have 70 to 100 loan officers in my area? [01:00] Why Market Size Is the Wrong Lens – It's not how many LOs exist, it's how many are aligned and how strong your system is [02:00] Visibility vs. True Recruiting – Reaching out once is not recruiting. You need consistent, structured engagement [02:30] Real Story: Midwest Leader With 85 LOs – After mapping the market, he realized very few LOs had received consistent value or follow-up [03:30] Question 1: Is Recruiting a Top 3 Priority? – If not, a recruiter becomes an admin, not a multiplier [04:00] Question 2: Do You Have a System? – CRM, avatar, cadence, scripting, follow-up, all must be in place before hiring [04:45] Question 3: Are You Recruiting for Fit or Volume? – In small markets, alignment is more important than raw production [05:20] Question 4: Can You Tell a Clear Story? – If your recruiter can't communicate your value clearly, you'll lose to comp-focused competitors [06:00] The Math That Makes It Work 3 key hires = $60K/month revenue $720K annually More than enough to justify the hire [06:30] What a Recruiter Should Be – Not a cold caller, but a connector who runs value plays and books warm calls [07:00] When to Delay the Hire – If your system is messy or undefined, wait. Build first. Then hire [07:30] Real Results – The Midwest leader built a system first, hired a recruiter second, and scaled to 9 hires in a "too small" market [08:00] Action Steps Build a clean LO list Document your recruiting message Create a 90-day value-add follow-up plan Prove it works Hire a recruiter to run the top of funnel [09:30] Closing Thought – You don't need more market. You need more mastery. Strategy wins, not size Key Takeaways It's Not About Market Size. It's About Market Mastery – A recruiter in a small market works if the system is already built Recruiting Must Be a Top Priority – No hire can replace your ownership of the vision Build First, Hire Second – Document your message, process, and rhythms before bringing someone in Focus on Alignment Over Volume – In a small market, values and vision matter more than raw numbers Your Story Wins the Game – When your message is clear, your recruiter becomes a magnet, not a salesperson A small market doesn't limit your impact. Lack of clarity does. Build the system. Then scale it with the right partner. Want help building your recruiting system so a recruiter can multiply it? Why is this team still struggling so much, even after GM Ben Cherington decided to keep productive veterans like Tommy Pham and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on expiring contracts? How did manager Don Kelly's club fall so far behind its small-market peer, led by GM Matt Arnold? Can Bob Nutting or anyone else really complain about MLB economics when the Brewers are thriving like they are? And how much longer can Cherington hold onto his job? Our duo tackles those topics, plus some on-field questions. Is there any hope left for Jack Suwinski, who's struggled immensely since his most recent promotion from the minor leagues? Will Oneil Cruz's injured list stint snap him out of his post-All-Star break funk? And how bad could this offense be in 2026 if both Tommy Pham and Andrew McCutchen choose not to return?

I'm astounded at the frequency with which I see absolute fantasy in proposed commercial projects. The discussion involves the development of a luxury mid-rise building in a tertiary market. Where these smaller tertiary markets have an advantage, is that they have less infrastructure at the municipal level. They won't have a multi-billion dollar subway system to build and maintain. They don't have a massive social assistance program. The extent of their utilities is much more contained and therefore the impact fees charged to developers are much lower. So that has the effect of lowering the land cost. Generally speaking, the land cost will be lower compared with the competitive environment of the big city. This past week I looked at a project that has taken investor capital from some pretty savvy people. Yet somehow in a matter of about 3 minutes I was able to spot the flaws in the investment thesis by this so-called developer. -------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1)   iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613)   Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com)   LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce)   YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734)   Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso)   Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com)  **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com)   Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital)   Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)

Orlando Magic Power Forward Paolo Banchero's path to superstardom wasn't linear. Never considered a viral sensation, Banchero took Coach Mike Krzyzewski's early advice to go to Duke if he wanted a chance to become the NBA's #1 overall draft pick, a dream fulfilled in 2022. Banchero shares this and more in the newest installment of Boardroom Talks, where he sits with Boardroom Co-Founder Rich Kleiman to share his battle back from injury this season, how the chemistry of the Magic has evolved throughout his hiatus and return and how they're working toward a star-packed parity in the NBA similar to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in Boston or Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray in Denver. Later, the two discuss how the role of the NBA star has evolved from Michael Jordan to LeBron James and into present day stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Anthony Edwards as well as how the latter, Edwards, shared an instrumental belief on how the playoffs are a unique beast of competition. Banchero also gushes over his love for Duke Basketball, his admiration for Duke phenom Cooper Flagg and what's next for his quest of becoming a perennial All-Star in the league.
