Quitting can be laced with shame. That's why people come up with all sorts of incredible reasons to quit then validate it to themselves or the people in their lives. But what if we allowed ourselves to quit, without resistance, judgement or shame? Then allowed ourselves to listen deeply to the voice within and what still lingers after we say we're through. That's what I'm going to experiment with the next time I want to throw in the towel on my business, my vacation rental company, my career. I'm just going to allow the thought. Quit. Then listen.Maybe quitting is part of our growth.Don't be caught without a plan. Teachers might unknowingly be in a cycle of being poor and staying poor, even after retirement. Then we teach our kids the same way of being and the cycle continues.I'm shifting focus to a more pinpointed conversation about how to make more money in real estate investing, even as a teacher.Teachers can be real estate investors, it just might look different than the typical six figure earning corporate workers. So today I'll explain what The Poor Cycle is and, if you feel compelled, keep listening to the next year's worth of episodes as I offer more about how I got myself out of The Poor Cycle and secured my financial future through real estate investing.Don't be caught without a plan. Today we talk about how cleaning up what you've already got instead of impulse shopping or thought-swapping might serve you better in the long run. This whole episode came from a stroll I was taking at the local home improvement store when I noticed how expensive fabric shower curtains were. Instead of buying a new one like I thought I needed, I just cleaned the one I already had.Comparatively, I can clean up my thoughts around what I've got already and make it more comfortable, more accepting and more loving.Enjoy this episode about cleaning up what we've already got instead of trying to replace it when it doesn't need to go just yet.Don't be caught without a plan. One of the ways I think a system can heal itself is from within.Who are the people inside the Education System?Teachers.Teachers are the ones who run this mutha. And if we are equipped with the empowerment to stand up for what's right, do best by our students and ourselves, what can stop us?Awesome part is, we do all this most of the time anyway. So let's not just sit back and comment on how broken the system is.Let's lead ourselves through our own transformations and watch as our students and coworkers stand in awe with how much we enjoy our lives, our career and being examples.Don't be caught without a plan. Dreaming is part of creating the future we most desire.Do you allow yourself to dream or do you stop yourself, shame yourself and tell yourself you *shouldn't* be dreaming at all? This is important to note. There's nothing wrong with dreaming, spending time creating a dream life AND telling yourself that it's possible, no matter how impossible you think it is.When we go to how IMPOSSIBLE our dreams are, it's most likely because we don't know every single step of the process to getting to the end result. But this is no reason NOT to dream. In this episode, I'll be sharing a seed of an idea that I am allowing myself to be fully immersed in while I dream about it.Not only do I dream about the final result, but I dream of how amazing it will be.Yes, my brain likes to come up with ways that this'll fail and won't be worth my time,But that's just my brain doing it's best job to keep me from what I fear the most, humiliation, ridicule and failure.I'm in good company. But I don't want to stay in that stagnant comfortable discomfort of NOT creating. If I had to guess, neither do you.Get on my schedule so we can figure out the life you dream of: https://calendly.com/coachwithwolfe/30-minute-session Don't be caught without a plan. We all have requirements as professional teachers. I break them down into three categories in the episode for your consideration:1) State mandates/legal requirements for teaching2) District and campus requirements as communicated by the manuals and plans3) Requirements we place on ourselves to fit in, be "perfect" and to please others on your campus. That last one y'all... that last one. That's what I go on about in the episode. If you're a teacher in Texas and you're curious about the TASB document I referred to in the episode, it is here: https://www.tasb.org/services/legal-services/tasb-school-law-esource/personnel/documents/faq-regarding-teacher-planning-periods.pdf Don't be caught without a plan. "Worry is like a rocking horse, it'll never get you anywhere." -AnonymousI'm hosting a free 30-minute webinar on Oct 29, 2022 that helps worried teachers find peace of mind in under a minute.Click or copy/paste this link for more info: https://www.subscribepage.com/worryrelief Invite a friend by sending them the link above. You won't want to miss it.In today's episode, I'm revealing the way I like to describe the process of worrying.I'll give you an approach that you've never heard before, most likely, and ways you can help yourself when you're having a good, old fashioned worry session.Funny enough, I catch myself worrying quite a bit about things that are out of my control. So don't be fooled when you think to yourself that I've got this whole thing figured out and I never worry anymore ever.Worry is part of our primitive hard-wiring, if you ask me. We are so well-practiced at it. Worry is a habit. But like any habit, we can learn how to pause the act of that habit and redirect our brain to something more productive.Because just like a rocking horse, worry feels like we're accomplishing something because our brain is busy. But that's simply not the case.Don't be caught without a plan. Make your Mental & Emotional Health Strategy Plan with me before going back to school! I like to believe that life gives us equal and opposite positive and negative, in all things. Pros and cons, yes and no, yin and yang. So, like that two-lane road, if we drive down the middle, with two tires of our car in the right land and two in the left lane, we will be able to think of life as giving us both good and bad. Recently I used a personal example of becoming the head coach of my son's baseball team, by default, because the head coach basically ghosted. My brain really wanted to focus on the negative but the positive, in equal amounts, was blossoming all around me. Parents and coaches stepped up to help and the kids never quit or stopped enjoying the game or practices. So let's take this idea of the mirror effect of the 50/50. In this example, the first head coach of my son's team quit and I stepped in. One negative, one positive. Parents stepped in to help but some parents were over-helping and starting to actually impede my progress as a coach for the kids. What if this mirror effect of positive and negative is coming true in our lives, all around us, but our brains are so focused on the negative through practice that we allow the positive to float right on by?Don't be caught without a plan. This is part two of the two part series about the lessons I've learned from my mother's death. Today I'll be talking about relationships and experiencing joy after death. If you haven't heard Part I of this podcast series, I invite you to start at episode 46, if you are so inclined. My ultimate goal is to help others during one of the most challenging times of being alive; dealing with death. We left off last episode talking briefly about relationships with those we have lost.My mother's death has taught me that relationships continue as long as I want them to. I've learned over the years that a relationship is not some outside entity between two people. It's not a person plus a person equals a relationship and that the three can be separated. To me, it's the thoughts I have about another person that are the foundation of my relationship with them. I can still have thoughts about my mom. Therefore, I can still have a relationship with her. I made it that simple for myself. And you have the same opportunity. My relationship has changed because my mom is not physically here with me, but I talk to my mom all the time in my head and in my journaling. Do you allow yourself to do this with the people who aren't physically in your life anymore, living or dead?In my experience, it has been very healing because I know that my mom is with me. I know my mom knows my mind and my heart. I know I can still share with her. I can still hear her cheer for me, compliment me and be proud of me. Yes, there are times when I question whether I'm sane or not but you know, I let that judgment fall away. I love talking with my mom and I do it now more than ever, because I can and I want to.Even with someone who hasn't passed away, you can still have a relationship with them if you so choose. It's as simple as a thought. It's as simple as creating an answer. Because your thoughts cause you to feel, your relationship with someone will come from your nourished thoughts, whether positive or negative, useful or not useful. Whichever thoughts and stories you are giving attention to in your headspace about another person, those are the foundation of your relationship with them. And if you want the relationship to change, what do you think needs to change first? It's not them. It's your thoughts about them.If you're ready to try this out, think of a person you miss desperately. Perhaps you don't see them as often as you'd like, perhaps their life has come to a completion. What would you like to say to them right now? Think it. Think of their face. Then imagine their response back to you. It's probably more simple and straightforward than you think.Don't be caught without a plan. Make your Mental & Emotional Health Strategy Plan with me before going back to school! This is part one of a two part series about the lessons I've learned from losing my mom. Today I'll be talking about grief and the definition of death. Next week, I'll talk about relationships and joy after death. Please stay tuned and subscribe to my podcast so you don't miss it. My ultimate goal is to help others during one of the most challenging times of being alive; dealing with death.Over the last year since my mother passed away, I've paid very close attention to my experience. I tell people all the time that I am so thankful for the coaching skills I had when my mom started to get sick and when she passed on. Those coaching skills were what guided me through that experience at the time of her death and up to this point a year later. For those of you who are going through hard times, I want to let you know that you are not alone in this, there are people like me who are ready to help and, most importantly, the ultimate truths that are best for you are inside you if you are willing to slow down and listen to yourself with compassion. This episode is going to be a way for me to share some of my practiced thoughts, some of my realizations and some of my routines that I have cultivated over the last year or so. I know this will help you with grief, loss and the overwhelm of unexpected change or added responsibilities.First, let's talk about what I have learned, so far, about grief over the last year. For the longest time, I was convinced that there were stages of grief that I would go through, much like a race, with a starting line and a finish line. Grief would start, I'd go through it, and it would end. Many of you already know that this is probably not the grief experience for most of us. It was a widely accepted explanation for a while, but everyone will go through it differently. And allowing myself to be open to grief being whatever it was going to be helped me loosen the reins on myself when I was stuck wondering, “What stage am I going through right now? Am I denying? Am I negotiating?” Me personally, I hate being fit into boxes. So I think I'm just going to rebel against a widely known definition of a life experience, especially when I'm about to go through it and I'm scared. This was the part of my mindset work that started when I realized my mom may have been in decline. I was open to learning from grief coaches on podcasts and audiobooks as I spent hours in the car driving down to visit my parents while my mom was sick. It's important to notice these patterns in your thinking because, if you pause and listen to yourself, you'll be able to shine light on your current thinking and then make decisions on whether you want to continue to think that way or make some changes. One of the most powerful realizations I had about grief came to me through a podcast with Krista St. Germain who is a life coach for widows. She was explaining that grief will take it's own shape. Grief will present itself and won't follow a set pattern for each of us. When you're ready to dive deeper you might want to go looking for current information about grief. There are tons of free resources out there and I'll link some of my favorites in the show notes. Back to student testing data… what I'm noticing teachers are doing is going through testing times of the school year, looking at student data results and potentially beating the crap out of themselves for the students who aren't meeting the mark.I'm not suggesting that teachers defer to toxic positivity here. If a student is failing and you have a thought about it that makes you feel terrible, it's time to pause and pay attention. It could be that the thoughts that come to you on auto-pilot about students in your class who are failing aren't very supportive. Here are a few examples: “I'm not a good teacher. They're not able to learn. I don't know what else to do. I don't know how to teach this kid. They're on their own. If they're not getting it by now, I can't help them. I'm not cut out for this. I should have tried harder.”For a person who speaks kindly about themselves first, then about their students, maybe the thoughts are constructive such as “This is part of their growth. They're starting to catch on. Look at what they've done already. I know they're not passing yet but I'm confident they will next time. I know I'm doing the best I can and I will keep doing the best I can. I have faith in my students. It's ok. This will give me good insight on some new things I can try in the classroom. I can collaborate with some other teachers to focus in on these areas that need growth. This'll be fun. I'm up for it. That's what I'm here for.”One article I found online uses the term “toxic productivity” where a student, or teacher, mind you, connects their worth as a person or professional to the output, or productivity, they create. For students, it's not just passing grades but perfect grades. https://www.idahoednews.org/voices/cycle-of-toxic-productivity-the-problem-with-our-school-culture/_____________________________________________________________________________________________________www.teachermindsetcoach.comIG - www.instagram.com/teachermindsetcoachDon't be caught without a plan. Success Toxicity is the net negative commitment to a definition of success that EXCLUDES the positive by-products that come from failure because of this flawed but systemic notion that failure is bad, will only harm us, and will ruin our futures. This is also why some teachers go through so much emotional turmoil when things "aren't working out" with student performance. The teacher's performance is "failing" because the test scores aren't where somebody said they should be. Then we get the conversation of "developmentally inappropriate" coming from teachers in an attempt to feel validated and better about the job we're doing. But what if we could feel better about the job we're doing REGARDLESS of the progress monitoring scores our students put up? Tune in next week for Part II of Success Toxicity where the rubber hits the road for teachers and how we talk to ourselves and our students about their test scores or productivity.___________________________________________________________________________________________________www.teachermindsetcoach.comDon't be caught without a plan. Last week, I hinted at an episode about toxic positivity so that's what I'll be talking about today. Before I started my research online, I wrote down a few ideas of my own that I had on this topic. My main theme in this discussion echoes much of my beliefs about self-responsibility, self-creation and self-actualization. So it may come as no surprise that my ideas, my thoughts regarding toxic positivity is that it's an inside job. It's an inside job in its creation and in the solutions for fixing it.I'll start with sharing my ideas with you then I'll move to what I found online about toxic positivity . Then we'll get to the solutions and how to use this information for you instead of against you.Toxic positivity comes from the inside to present outward to the world. Toxic positivity does not come from outside of you to affect what's on the inside.Toxic positivity is when we feel obligated to be positive when we don't want to be. But this is always an inside job. No one can force us to feel anything, positive or negative. If you've got a deer in the headlights look on your face right now, not only are you in the right place but you might want to listen to some of my earlier podcast episodes about thoughts and emotions.Toxic positivity is also an attempt to escape the discomfort of negative emotion but it has a compounding effect because of the lie we try to force ourselves to believe that life should be 100% positive all the time.Psychology Today defines toxic positivity as, “...the act of avoiding, suppressing, or rejecting negative emotions or experiences. This may take the form of denying your own emotions or someone else denying your emotions, insisting on positive thinking instead.”https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/toxic-positivity To me, what helps us understand if we are experiencing toxic positivity or not is to ask ourselves how we truly feel when we turn down the external voices and find what resonates within us. If we can do this, toxic positivity will fade away and we will hear our inner voice so much more clear. The Psychology Group defines toxic positivity as, “...the excessive and ineffective overgeneralization of a happy, optimistic state across all situations. The process of toxic positivity results in the denial, minimization, and invalidation of the authentic human emotional experience.”https://thepsychologygroup.com/toxic-positivity/ Don't be caught without a plan. The Sunday Blues can be a mystery for professionals working a typical weekday job.The Sunday Blues can also be an opportunity for us to take something that we think is as inevitable as the order of the days on a calendar and question everything about it.To be clear, the goal of this episode is NOT to train you on how to get rid of the Sunday Blues or turn it into feeling 100% positive and joyful every Sunday at 7pm. The goal of this episode is to use something that can be universally experienced as an example of how you can take a habitual way of feeling and start using your brain to make conscious decisions to feel it on purpose or to choose to feel a different way. This episode is about empowerment. This talk is about how you can take something seemingly small and not harmful, like the Sunday Blues, and practice creating different feelings with your thoughts.Don't be caught without a plan. Let me take you on a trip to one of my favorite places to eat: Chipotle.Let me explain how I thought my order was wrong, went back so they could make it right, only to find out that I was wrong. Then I was the one who went back to make it right. This is the long and short of what Byron Katie calls "living amends."Making it right. The kicker: there's no "right" way to do it.You just do what you know sits well with you.Don't be caught without a plan. In this tandem episode, I will help you understand how you are already equipped to create the sense of belonging, the feeling of belonging, for yourself, anywhere you happen to be.We can create a sense of belonging in places/environments like our classrooms or schools. We can create a sense of belonging in our own physical bodies. No matter what. Its a power, through self-study and thought work, that we have with us all the time.We can belong anywhere and with anyone we damn well please. How?Because our sense of belonging doesn't come from a place or another person. It comes from the thoughts and beliefs we have in our minds that helps us feel like we belong.**What's a "tandem episode" you ask? Well its when one of your podcasting coach friend creates a podcast episode with the exact same title but she goes about the content completely differently than you!**So the best experience for our dear listeners is for you to listen to and learn from both episodes. Does it take you a while to relax?Does it take you so long to relax that half your vacation is over by the time you've "relaxed" enough to enjoy it?I'm on vacation in Cancun, Mexico right now.I'm making it an intentional point to luxuriate, feel all of the awesomeness of being me right now, even with my mind chatter and mental drama.Even with what's going on in the world.I'm not in the camp of thinking that my mind drama is a problem that needs to be solved anymore. It just is.And I can still fully enjoy my experience. Its the only life I've got and no one can say that I have to be miserable, believe that the world is going to hell or that my vacation is ruined by... well... anything.Join me as I explain the ways that I allowed myself to 100% be inside the experience of being putty in the hands of my massage therapist as well as still making small decisions to honor my wants and needs in the moment. Not making it a people pleasing moment, but a pleasing me moment.Don't be caught without a plan. Switching gears, mentally, for the summer slow down.https://www.edutopia.org/blog/calming-end-of-year-stress-lori-desautels Dr. Lori Desautels, article Calming End-of-Year Stress“Calming the brain's stress response is critical to positive emotion, clarity of thought, and emotional regulation. When we use breathing or focused attention exercises to quiet the emotional center of our brains where fight, flight, and fear reside, we are activating neural circuits in the brain that strengthen the flow of oxygen and glucose through the prefrontal cortex.”A focused attention exercise can be any number of things. I like to involve the five senses where I'm hyper focused on either my sense of touch, hearing, smell or sight. _____________________________________________________________________________________________www.teachermindsetcoach.cominstagram.com/teachermindsetcoachsubscribepage.com/thebootashley@teachermindsetcoachDon't be caught without a plan. I know a lot of us also like to go into Entrepreneur Mode or Small Business Mode or Side Gig Mode during the summer because of the magical 40+ hours a week we now have at our disposal. It's true. When school lets out for the summer, we are gifted 40+ hours per week of free time. So if you're one of the countless teachers who uses the extra time that we have over the summer to work on your side business, I'll be speaking to you today. Now for the tactical side of forming the Fun Committee for your campus! It starts with naming yourself as Co-President of The Fun Committee where you work, NOT getting permission from your principal. Having a partner in crime, a Co-President, will not only make the brainstorming and planning sessions more... well... fun, it will help you stay engaged and committed to the task of seeing this through for your entire staff, department or grade level. You will be accountability buddies.Start with the question, "How can we have more fun here?"Choosing this question is important because the brain will focus on finding answers to THAT question. It's a much more productive alternative to "Why does our campus suck at having fun?" See the difference? As you brainstorm ideas of how to have fun, you'll start finding themes and trends. Your brain is also going to start speaking up with all sorts of objections that include but aren't limited to:-we don't have the budget for that-admin will say no immediately-no one will want to do this-we don't know what we're doing-it will start strong then fizzle outand on and on and on. But that's just what human brains do. They want to be the wet blanket that ultimately keeps you from putting yourself out there and risking social rejection or failure.Find your Co-PresidentMake your list of fun activitiesThen realize what the guiding principals are for YOUR place of work. They will be different than mine. Some of my guiding principals are:"When we create more organized opportunities for employees to connect with each other, deeper relationships will be formed.""When times get tough, strong relationships among employees will be one of the ingredients for getting through hardships."After listening to this episode, if you haven't caught Episode 32, I go over some great reasons why fun matters, backed by the research of Catherine Price, author of The Power of Fun._________________________________________________________________________________________________www.teachermindsetcoach.cominstagram.com/teachermindsetcoachsubscribepage.com/thebootashley@teachermindsetcoachDon't be caught without a plan. There are all different shapes and forms of a crisis that could happen in our world. This episode will go into the foundation of why I want a Fun Committee on my campus and why I think fun is so important for people, especially educators. Next week, Part II will be more about how you can establish a Fun Committee on your own campus for the benefit of your staff. In short, the Fun Committee is a group of teachers who plans fun stuff for the entire staff throughout the year. I think every school should have one because I believe in the importance of consistent opportunities for bonding through having fun for teachers and staff who work together 10 months out of the year.I found an interesting NY Times article about having fun, written by Catherine Price who is the author of The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again. The article and Thriftbooks listing for this book are both linked in the show notes. https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/the-power-of-fun-how-to-feel-alive-again_catherine-price/28329331/#edition=59079283&idiq=46270375https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/23/well/mind/having-fun-suceeding-coronavirus-pandemic.html Price wrote this article in Dec 2021 to promote her book and she reiterates the importance of fun even in a pandemic. This makes me think of my stance on the importance of fun even during testing season. We are not robots, we are not machines, we are not miracle workers. And, even though this almost seems like a cliche saying anymore, teachers are humans. And, to me, fun brings relief. And relief is sweet.Price brings up a great point when she says, “true fun… materializes when we experience the confluence of three psychological states: playfulness, connection and flow.”The article has some amazing explanations of each of these three qualities and I'm going to go into what I think this means for teachers and what our opportunities are. I know this will spark something in you too, if you allow it. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________Follow Teacher Mindset Coach on TpT!https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Teacher-Mindset-Coachwww.teachermindsetcoach.comFunny as hell newsletter and free PDF to cut your teaching stress in half by tomorrow:subscribepage.com/thebootLet's have a real convo about what you're going through. Each of us will have heavy days.We will allow ourselves to feel the weight of what's going on in our lives without judgement or trying to fix it.But when do we allow this on "special" days like Mother's Day, Christmas, New Years, our birthdays, Thanksgiving, or any other time when we are expected to enjoy and just be happy? This past Mother's Day, I had several reasons for feeling heavy, feeling low, and simply not wanting to be in a good mood for the sake of others around me.Listen in on how I managed this time and what I did in response to the heaviness I felt during a day when everyone was wishing me a happy day and hoping it was a great one. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________Find me on Teachers Pay Teachers!Follow me and check out the resources FOR teachers in my store.https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Teacher-Mindset-CoachWill you be one of the first 100 people to Follow me on TPT?Don't be caught without a plan. This week, I take a closer look at the phrase I've heard some of my most revered and highly successful Life Coach mentors say..."It's not better here than there."You see, my dad is now living in the tiny house in my backyard.I sure as hell think he's better here than where he was, for so many reasons. And so does he.So how can this phrase be stuck in my mind so much?Probably because life is still 50/50.It's a somewhat equal mix of good and bad.In reference to changes you may have on the horizon, or decisions you know you'll have to make soon, are you telling yourself that life will be better "there" versus life "here"?That's what I'm getting at.A change of scenery won't make life 100% good as if it was the silver bullet that saved humanity. But, as I see it, we can choose to really celebrate and savor, stand in appreciation and gratitude for the life we have created. And while we're at it, give ourselves a hearty slap on the back for doing a job well done.If it IS, in fact, better here than there, it's because you've created it. You've made it so.______________________________________________________________________________________________Get the first Result of my Six Weeks to Summer Program by copying and pasting this link and taking some time out in Prioritizing YOU!https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AUDZkcj-tp9xL1SgHCiqzCEVfqzRThRW/view?usp=sharing Email me if you are a teacher with aging parents and want to know how I can helpashley@teachermindsetcoach.comJoin my Facebook Group:www.facebook.com/groups/teachermindsetcoachIG: @teachermindsetcoachDon't be caught without a plan. The legacy you leave may also be so much MORE than what your heirs will think or say about you, what they'll remember and what they'll sort through when you're gone.Perhaps our legacy is only and exactly what we define it as. For our episode today about lessons I learned this past week from backyard baseball with my seven year old son, Miles. There were three profound moments that I'll be describing to you today. 1) Try again, 2) One small adjustment creates amazing results, and 3) The point is to just believe in yourself.Children need adults in their lives who create a safe environment for them to mess up repeatedly while the adult is there, observing, confirming and supporting without judgment. How can we cut the negative connotation in half from the phrase “these trying times” and actually insert some positivity into it? Namely, with the pandemic we've all been living with for the last two years, these could be called “trying times” but we still go on living and we still keep trying. The next lesson learned from this small moment in time was how one small adjustment created amazing results. This showed up in Miles' hits when I was throwing them to him from the chair. This was such a cool realization for both of us and we didn't let the “waste of time” bother us at all because the results were so awesome. We didn't even use the term “waste of time” in regards to the time it took us, the number of throws and misses, that it took us to realize I needed to be tossing the ball up just 6” to the outside. These days the word “change” can have a negative connotation to a lot of people. But “adjust” is compared to seeking comfort, so there can be a positive connotation. In my baseball example, I didn't totally change what we were doing, I just make a small adjustment. How can this phrasing help you in your career as a teacher?_____________________________________________________________________________________________For more, go to www.teachermindsetcoach.com and click the button at the top of the page for your Free PDF to Give Burnout the BOOT and cut your teaching stress in half before going back tomorrowDon't be caught without a plan. I want teachers to feel better. I want teachers to learn the concepts that helped me grow up and into the person I am today. A person who believes that burnout has nothing on me. I laugh in the face of burnout. Burnout has no face. Burnout is only a figment of my imagination. I can obliterate burnout with a firehose or blow it out in a single breath. That's the story I tell myself, which helps me feel empowered. But I'm getting ahead of myself. You see, I have a very specific view on teacher burnout and, to sum it all up, my stance is that burnout is not something that falls out of the sky and hits you or knocks on our door unexpectedly only to invite itself in. Burnout is not something that is required or “getting worse every year.” Burnout has only recently been identified as diagnosable by the American Institute of Stress. “The new diagnosis is defined as a “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: 1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; 2) increased mental distance from one's job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and 3) reduced professional efficacy. Burnout refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.” Link to article: https://www.stress.org/burnout-is-now-an-official-medical-condition Another online definition of burnout included the word “disengagement” as it described burned out employees not having an interest or motivation in their work anymore. It seems very definitive, very final. And disengagement, in my view, is a decision. Its not something that just happens to us without our permission. Now, if anyone listening is experiencing something that you feel needs the attention of a professional, I encourage you to make those powerful decisions for yourself. Talk to your school's counselor, your district crisis team or your doctor. I'm a life coach, not a medical professional or therapist. So in this episode, you won't find me retelling a story of how burnout is so awful and only getting worse. Instead, you'll probably hear more about how you are the one in charge here. You are the one who can change your story. You are the one who creates burnout with the way you choose to think and believe about your current situation. There, I said it. What we may experience are the symptoms of burnout but no one has one universal definition of what burnout actually is, which is why it's just a story at the end of the day. This may sound like I'm belittling or minimizing burnout itself. Well, actually, that's my intention. Y'all. All week, I've been telling myself that I'm doing epic shit. And the evidence is all around me to prove myself true, to prove my trajectory true, to prove that I'm fulfilling my promise and reaching my most important goals that I've chosen for my biggest life. You might be surprised how simple these goals are. And if you've been listening for a bit, you may even know what my top priority is. If this is your first time listening, welcome to the podcast! I'd also love to see you in the free FB group called the Teacher Mindset Coach and feel free to visit my website, www.teachermindsetcoach.comBe forewarned. I say the phrase “epic shit” about 11-teen times in this episode. No, I didn't actually count but I feel like that could be pretty accurate. But they're all appropriately placed so you and I both can do a little fist pump in the air instead of being remotely bothered by it. LOLSo my week has been super exciting with the delivery of my Dad's tiny house to our backyard. I found a barn that was converted into a tiny house while casually scrolling FB marketplace two weeks ago, jumped on the opportunity to purchase it and then had to find a person who would transport it from one backyard to another within seven days. And I did it. All went as smoothly as we could have hoped. And now my husband and I are the proud owners of a cute, farmhouse rustic barndominium that will soon be 100% outfitted and set up for my dad to live inside of so he can be close to our family in his Golden Years. When we stop to recognize the Epic Stuff we do in our lives, we can't help but be a little amazed with ourselves. I mean, really, give yourself some credit, some celebration, some attention, some accolades. Why do this? Because its awesome in so many ways. It helps us feel the appreciation that we may secretly desire from others. It may affirm our work, our process, our current standings. And doing this may just help us keep going, keep doing awesome things and become the future person who does more epic shit instead of become stagnant and still. Don't be caught without a plan. This is the Teacher Mindset Coach podcast, episode #17!Hello there! Welcome back to part 3 of the series on disrupting stagnant energy! Today we'll be talking about the energy in our relationships with others and how there could be some stagnating going on that is worth it to pay attention to and clean up.Today we are going to start uncovering some potentially stagnant and stinking thinking we may have in relation to the people who are in our lives. As teachers, we have sooooo many people in our lives who know us just inside the walls of our school. Its kinda crazy when you think about it. We know our staff and team, our students and their families. That's dozens of people and it changes every school year! And if you're a campus servant like me, you automatically have the opportunity to know hundreds of people, by name, at the very least. One that has helped me in the last two years when I think about most other people but especially people I may see on TV doing stuff I would never dream of doing is, “I can't control the humans” or “I can't control others.” That one actually comes in handy at times when I worry about what my seven year old son and his sweet little friends are getting into at school. I literally can't control my son, especially when he's away from me, and I have to accept that as a normal part of being his mom and watching him grow up or… wondering what he's doing in my imagination and checking myself when I create a story that doesn't serve him or me.But before I get ahead of myself, let's go back to the definition of stagnation and talk about its opposite: invigoration.Stagnation is something that is without action or animation. I like to say its when something is so old, perhaps, that its starting to rot and return to the earth. The opposite of this is invigoration which is when something comes to life or is growing and thriving. The energy of those two opposites is what is important to look at and observe.Relate these definitions with the thoughts you have about other people. In this exercise, its important to understand how to identify the difference between a stagnating thought and an invigorated thought. Don't be caught without a plan.
