21st Century Water
How a Small District in Colorado is Leading The West in Water Innovation

21st Century Water

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2025 28:43

In this episode of 21st Century Water, we sit down with Andrea Cole, General Manager of Dominion Water & Sanitation District in Colorado. With a background in engineering and law, Andrea brings a multidimensional perspective to leading water, wastewater, and stormwater efforts in the fast-growing Sterling Ranch community. We begin by exploring her journey from a small town in Wyoming, where an early appreciation for natural resources sparked her passion for water. Her unique blend of technical knowledge and legal expertise has positioned her to address the regulatory, financial, and political challenges that utilities face today. We dive into Sterling Ranch's model of sustainability, where renewable water is foundational—not an afterthought. Dominion, under Andrea's leadership, has helped position the community as a leader in water efficiency, achieving usage rates as low as 0.17 acre-feet per home annually. This mindset-first approach has shaped a culture where residents inherently value water as a finite resource. With only 10% of the community built out so far, Sterling Ranch is on track to grow to nearly 60,000 residents, with infrastructure in place to support long-term sustainability. We also look at Douglas County's broader vision for growth, where Dominion plays a central role in establishing renewable water systems to support future economic development. A key highlight is the $34 million regional wastewater treatment plant set to break ground, which will treat reusable water and enable indirect potable reuse. This project also connects a nearby disadvantaged community to modern infrastructure and safe water, correcting long-standing issues with non-renewable, contaminated sources.Andrea emphasizes the importance of soft skills in leadership—stakeholder engagement, regulatory navigation, and political awareness—as often more critical than the technical engineering work itself. Her legal training enables her to view regulatory frameworks not as barriers but as tools for innovative problem-solving. We also discuss Dominion's forward-thinking investment strategy, totaling over $70 million across wastewater, pump stations, and water pipeline projects in the coming years.Despite being a small and growing utility with only 11 employees, Dominion is leveraging its flexibility to adopt modern technology like GIS to enhance planning and operations. Workforce development is another key theme, with Andrea focusing on hiring people who thrive in dynamic environments and want to help shape the district's future. She closes by expressing her vision for a legacy rooted in sustainability—a future where our great-grandchildren can enjoy water and nature just as we have.Links:Dominion Water & Sanitation District: https://www.dominionwsd.orgSterling Ranch Community: https://www.sterlingranchcolorado.comDouglas County Government: https://www.douglas.co.usAmerican Rescue Plan Act: https://home.treasury.gov/policy-issues/coronavirus/assistance-for-state-local-and-tribal-governments/state-and-local-fiscal-recovery-funds Aquasight Website: https://aquasight.io/

Duncan's career change really happened when, as an advertising and marketing executive, he decided to go on a six-month motorbiking trip and sold up his home and possessions. Two years, a hurricane and several life-changing experiences later, he returned to the UK with a vision. To sell bottled water for good causes and use the profits to bring clean water projects to the one billion people worldwide who lived without access to it.In this episode of ProGRESS Duncan explains why he went into marketing rather than medicine, what made him leave a job he enjoyed and how he ended up running an ethical organisation, based on values instilled by his grandparents and parents. He also discusses:• the importance of One being carbon neutral• why One opted for green energy from the get-go• using recycled plastic for bottles before it became 'the right thing' to do.• why One was among the first UK organisations to get B Corp certification.Since his vision for One preceded the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) statements so many organisations make now, the private equity funders Duncan originally approached still wanted significant financial returns, while charities wouldn't get on board with a business model that handed over profits. Undeterred by their doubts, Duncan remortgaged his flat and with a goodwill army of 78 people he ploughed all he had into making one small change, one new standpipe, one day at a time.Big name organisations such as the Coop, World Duty Free and Starbucks have helped One grow and at the time of the podcast (April 2024), One was celebrating more than £30million raised and improving living conditions for over 5 million people through its clean water programmes.Mentioned in this podcastOne WaterB CorporationsThe Co-op water security programmesWorld Duty FreeOne Water and StarbucksPolytag packaging tracing technologyJupiter's Travels by Ted SimonAbout ProGRESS:Host Sandra Kessell invites guests to discuss jobs, courses and activities and asks for real-world insights into the pathways and career choices that led to their current point in life. He highlights the importance of recognizing stormwater as a crucial factor in wastewater infrastructure. He emphasizes that stormwater is our purest form of water, initially clean and becomes polluted as it interacts with the environment. The presence of sediment, debris, and contaminants in stormwater significantly impacts wastewater treatment processes, as these substances can enter collection systems and treatment plants. What can we do about this? What is the importance of incorporating maintenance and long-term costs into project design and recommending products like dewatering bags? What are the effects of climate change and the role of individuals in reducing stormwater flow through rain harvesting and other practices? These and many other questions will be tackled as you listen to this episode.

How is all water interconnected? While in Southern California, he attended a conference, met with experts on this topic, and shared what he discovered with us. Why should we go with one method instead of another? How could we ensure its long-term viability as a solution? These and more questions will be answered as you listen to this episode! Welcome to episode 151 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! On this week's show we have the final installment of our four-part series recapping the inaugural One Water Race. Joining us for this episode is the winning team comprised of Swimrun royalty Kristen Larsson, Daniel Hansson, and Adriel Young. We get into all the details about what it took to win the inaugural event so you won't want to miss that. But first...Training UpdateThe training update is that there is no training update! We're enjoying some unstructured time off from training and it's glorious.ShoutoutsOur shoutout this week goes to Katie Tobin. She sent us a DM that she's loving the podcast and we're loving that she's loving the podcast. She's planning on making her Swimrun debut in 2023 and is looking for a female to partner with at events. If Nicolas Remires can't work his magic, we'll humbly try to help.Feats of EnduranceThis week's winner is Rococo who posted a coastal Swimrun workout on the Brittany Coast in France over the weekend. It looked like a cool route for sure!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWe've got a short one for everyone this week.Ever dreamed about racing a tropical Swimrun on an island off of the coast of Africa? Well if you haven't, now you will! Swimrun Réunion took place over the weekend and the island and the event looked magical. Congrats to everyone that raced! While it's a bummer that Swimrun season is practically over in the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere is like “hold my beer.” Over the weekend, Torpedo Swimrun hosted their Cape Swimrun event in South Africa. Dubbed “Africa's Original Ocean Swimrun” this event looked intense but super fun!In other news, Wild Swimrun recently announced that their first camp for 2023 will be on the beautiful island of Mallorca. The camp will take place from March 23-26. We expect this camp to fill up fast so head over to their website to sign up!That is it for this week. Feel free to reach out and let us know if there's anything that you'd like for us to mention on the show.Show BusinessHave you been getting bombarded with “Black Friday” emails even though it's on another day of the week? So have we and while we think it's slightly annoying we thought that we might as well jump on board. From now through the end of November, use the code BLACKFRIDAYHASNOMEANING to save 15% on everything in our store. One Water Race Part IV: Team 4-Sweden and AustraliaWhat an honor to get Kristen, Daniel, and Adriel on the same show! The only one missing was the team's boat driver (and OG Swimrunner himself) Johan Hasselmark who couldn't make it at the last minute. At this point, anyone who listens to this show enough knows that Team 4 won the inaugural race but there is so much more to the story than the 47 hours that it took them to traverse the entire Stockholm Archipelago. In this interview, we chatted about their preparations, trepidations, and aspirations going into the race and got a flavor of their epic race experience. This was an eye opening conversation about how some of the best Swimrunners in the world conquered this grueling event. Enjoy! That's it for this week's show. Joining us on this episode is the entire Team 3 - USA, A.K.A. Bend Racing. We've never had so many people on one podcast and we're here for it! Joining us are team captain Jason Magness, Tim Gorbold, Renee Metivier and Chris Wright. Folks in adventure racing circles are certainly familiar with Bend Racing and it was great to chat with them about their race experience. But first...Training UpdateOur 2022 Swimrun season is almost over but not before going out with a bang and a couple of Yeehaws! at Ödyssey Swimrun Austin in two weeks. We will be doing some “training” but mostly trying to keep things steady until race day. ShoutoutsOur shoutout this week goes to friend of the pod and previous guest Rick Mann. He recently suffered a heart attack during a training ride a few weeks ago. Our thoughts are with him and his family as he continues to recover…which appears to be going great since he's already crushing monster swims in the Atlantic Ocean like he used to. Feats of EnduranceThis week's winner is Glenn Wilko. He finished second in the Oceania Adventure Race on the Gold Coast of Australia over the weekend and it definitely looked like a feat of endurance. It took him (and his team) 25.5 hours to complete the 114 mile course with over 19,000ft. of elevation gain. Strong work!Bonus shoutout to our friend Danny “Da Monster” Dvinov for finishing in 12th overall (out of 2,900 participants) at Ironman California. He continues to live up to his nickname!Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWe've got a short one for everyone this week.ÖTILLÖ Cannes is in the books and the conditions were a repeat of last year, i.e., awesome! Congrats to Hugo and Max for keeping their season win streak alive as they head to the last ÖTILLÖ race of the year on the island of Malta in a few weeks.Speaking of Cannes…make sure that you check out the race film by our friend Rasmus on Youtube. The week after Cannes, the 6th edition of Swimrun Cote D'Azur took place up the coastline in France. The race conditions looked amazing and we love that they have three distance options that make the event as welcoming and inclusive as can be. We are dreaming about flying out to do both races back to back in the near future. That is it for this week. Feel free to reach out and let us know if there's anything that you'd like for us to mention on the show.Show BusinessJoin us in Pace Bend Park for an LTBz/Wild Swimrun shakeout Swimrun/FIKA on Saturday, Nov. 5th at 11am at Grisham Trail near where the cliff jump will be. We love hosting these shakeouts and this one is going to be extra special because we will have some special guests joining us including Bill and Chrissy, A.K.A. Team Mr. and Mrs. B, and Alex Sheen who are flying in from the U.K. for the race. One Water Race Part III: Team 3 - USAIt was great to get Team 3's race report. As we mentioned at the beginning of the show, Bend Racing is legendary in the adventure racing world and we learned why. In this conversation we spoke about how they got their team together, how they approached training, and got a detailed race report of their experience on the Archipelago. This was an emotional conversation since no one likes talking about DNF's but we loved their candor and humility. Enjoy! That's it for this week's show. Water is the world's most precious resource. However, 86% of plastic water bottles end up sitting in landfills or waterways in the United States alone. While everyone needs access to clean drinking water, there has to be a better way than plastic. David Cuthbert, CEO of Mananalu, explains how Jason Mamoa founded this company not to sell water, but to sell sustainability. With their “Drink One, Remove One” initiative, Mananalu is working to rid the world's oceans of plastic, one bottle at a time.   || LINKS || https://www.mananalu.com/ | www.calderalab.com/darin | Full Show Notes - https://darinolien.com/getting-rid-of-plastic-one-water-bottle-at-a-time-david-cuthbert/

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California was founded in 1928 under an act of the California Legislature to build and operate the Colorado River Aqueduct. Today Metropolitan  delivers water from the Colorado River and Northern California to its 26 member water agencies that serve 19 million people in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties. Metropolitan has also taken significant steps over the past three decades to reduce the region's reliance on imported water – investing more than $1.5 billion in conservation and local resources. But climate change and the state's ongoing record drought are reminders that more needs to be done. The individuals heading up three of Metropolitan's big initiatives to further the One Water concept while improving the agency's culture are here with us today to discuss what they see on the horizon. Guests on this episode are: Water Resources Manager Brad Coffey, who is the lead on Metropolitan's Pure Water Initiative; Liz Crosson, who is MWD's Chief Sustainability, Resiliency and Innovation Officer, and Liji Thomas, who is MWD Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer.

At WRA, we are working to drive on-the-ground solutions to climate change to advance clean energy, protect air, land, water, and wildlife—and sustain the lives and livelihoods of the West. And across the West, we know that almost every aspect of our lives is being impacted by the effects of climate change. From water scarcity and ongoing drought, to catastrophic wildfire and dangerous air quality levels. We know that these challenges, however distinct, are not isolated from each other. From 33 years of experience, we know crafting effective solutions to address climate change and meet our science backed emissions reductions goals requires a complex, collaborative, and multifaceted approach. To look at where those issues and our work to address them intersect, we're launching the Climate Nexus series for our 2 Degrees Out West podcast. This series will dig into the ways that pressing environmental challenges and the causal factors of climate change overlap, as well as the ways in which our staff at WRA are working together and combining their expertise to drive innovative solutions and getting results. For this first conversation, I spoke with Stacy Tellinghuisen and Ellen Howard Kutzer of WRA's Clean Energy Program, as well as Bart Miller and John Cyran of WRA's Healthy Rivers Program, about how our work to cut harmful emissions from Western coal plants and transition our region to a zero-carbon economy has the potential to help keep more water flowing through rivers and streams. Confused about how those two connect? Let's check it out.... Support WRA's work to drive on-the-ground solutions to climate change! Donate today! https://westernresourceadvocates.org/donate-now/
