The world's first cities sprung up around 6,000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia. Since then, many men and women have influenced their planning and design. William Penn believed a grid of wide streets with intersecting right angles would help prevent overcrowding, fire and disease. Norman Bel Geddes and Robert Moses imagined and planned cities shaped by cars. Jane Jacobs championed walkable, community-centered cities. Now, countries like India are planning to build hundreds of smart cities where sensors gather all kinds of data. As cities endure ups and downs, growth and change, what can we expect from their design and what have we learned by the urban planning movements of the past? Join host Walter Isaacson and guests as they map the past, present and future of the urban centers so many people call home. Featuring Ed Glaeser, Emily Talen, Andres Duany, Jeff Speck and Anthony Townsend. For more on the podcast go to delltechnologies.com/trailblazers/

He's accentuating the positive because since recording their contribution to this podcast, special guest Anthony Townsend has received some difficult news. And what better way to celebrate Anthony than getting out the tinsel and the colour and camping it about in a quarry? https://uk.gofundme.com/f/a-small-hand-for-antoni

The two things are not related, however. Host Toby Hadoke sees is he can accentuate the positive in his least favourite Doctor Who story - so prepare yourselves for either a Damascene conversion or a man lying about how much he enjoys watching magnificent divas yelling at giant brains. https://uk.gofundme.com/f/a-small-hand-for-antoni

So to draw attention to that and to help provide Anthony with a helping hand, we have bubble traps, high heels, impersonations and tinsel in a pipe. Welcome back for another episode of Nick’s Non-fiction with your host Nick Muniz! In 1850 amidst old foggy London town the Crystal Palace was built setting the precedent for convention centers equipped with rudimentary hvac and human processing. The age of indoors has fully taken over, Anthony Townsend elaborates on in Smart Cities how technology brings people into urban areas the same way air conditioning once popularized the suburbs. Technology moves fast as we see the 72º Songdo convention center pioneering dynamic ticketing based on social credit score and smart re-booking. Throughout the book Townsend focus’s on reshaping culture through civic programs and further developing autonomous energy grids. An anecdote about a 1999 hacker successfully compromising part of the Manhattan power grid admits that technology inevitably has hiccups. Hiccups always happen at the worst time like on your way into an interview. What happens when the impending fleet of driverless cars experiences a bug or a blackout causes thousands of amazon quad-copters to simultaneously fall from the sky? Townsend, a leader of Silicon Valley think tanks, forewarns if we are to create utopian garden cities we have to give up our cars. In order to win the Cold Race against Chinese AI we need a “culture of compliance” so the internet of things can harness our data… Feeling a bit queasy? No matter citizen, Chinese Cisco Vision is on its way to the states, a two way tele-screen in your dwelling linking you via live feed to the government for regular biometric readings. The unavoidable end is a dramatic Tale of Two Cities, as municipal tinkering showed in Rio de Janeiro, one city will prioritize humanity to technology while the other embraces the idea of their think tank legislators. „ You can continue planning to run your city with the same methods and the same people and same organizations - but disruption is gonna happen again and again and again.“ (Anthony Townsend, City Rebels Podcast Episode 1) In our first ever episode of City Rebels we kick off with an outstanding guest: Anthony Townsend (Twitter: @anthonymobile) Listening to our interview which we recorded back in November 2018 you will understand why Anthony is a real city rebel to us. His understanding and takes on smart cities have started way back when he was in college. For him, a smart city has always been more than big players implementing a new technology into the city's infrastructure or government. Since he has been looking at the topic of information and communication for more than twenty years so no wonder he brought out his first book "SMART CITIES: Big Data, Civic Hackers, and the Quest for a New Utopia" in 2014, discussing the use of big data and digitalization of our cities, and their transformation into smart cities. Besides publishing his first book, Anthony’s recent research has covered the future of automated and autonomous vehicles (AVs), the urban science movement, and big data and inclusion. One of his latest projects has been The Autonomous Vehicles: Future Scenarios supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies as part of the Bloomberg Aspen Initiative on Cities and Autonomous Vehicles and NLC. So, let's jump into our first episode! To keep it simple and structured - here are the show notes *drum roll* This episode is all about smart cities and new technologies. Discover with us: What Smart Cities has to do with the 2008 Financial Crisis and what led to Anthony writing his first book "Smart Cities“ How different parts of the world approach the smart city movement The three giants Uber, Amazon and Airbnb and their impact on our cities How new mobility is changing real estate models Why we should talk more about last meter rather than last mile logistics What watershed management has to do with autonomous driving E-Scooters in our cities and their potential for automation The Autonomous Vehicles: Future Scenarios - Booklets What potentials Anthony sees in Berlin in terms of future technologies Anthony's current work on his new book: Ghost Road: Beyond the Driverless Car About this Podcast: We are Urban Impact, an agency from Berlin, scouting, connecting and helping urban tech startups to grow in Europe. Through our work we have been getting into touch with real change makers, people, that shape our cities, think forward and make a real difference to us. We call those people "city rebels", just like our Podcast. Working with people, talking to them made us realize, how many amazing stories are out there, which we want to share with you. Feel free to send us a mail at hello@urbanimpact.eu if you believe you are a city rebel or simply want to reach out to us. Follow us on our social media accounts to stay connected! Five years ago, the world's urban population surpassed the rural population for the first time in history, and the number of city dwellers is expected to double in the next century. This dramatic change has created new challenges in urban living that require innovative new solutions. Cities have long made use of information technology to streamline city planning and daily life, from power grids to phone lines to wireless networks. As cities continue to grow, new technologies will arise to manage energy use, crime, traffic patterns and other urban issues and turn cities into finely tuned machines. Anthony Townsend, an urbanist and technology expert, will explore the conflict between top-down and bottom-up approaches to implementing new technologies, as well as the promises and risks of building tomorrow's smart cities.Speaker Anthony Townsend is the Research Director at the Institute for the Future. For more information about this event, visit: http://www.worldaffairs.org/events/2013/building-smart-cities.html
