EVENT: THIS SATURDAY EDSBS will be in town to celebrate Michigan fans once again dominating the Charity Bowl. Brush up on your shipwrecks trivia, find us at the library, and meet up for drinks afterwards at Venue. It's free but RSVP here so we can get a head count. BOOK: If you want a VALIANT, THE KICKSTARTER is still going on. If you want your name in it or need to add something to your order, email me. Things Discussed: Make Sam happy: We've got the #1 pick in the 2027 NHL Draft coming. Even better, DuPont falls under The Shouneyia Law: All Michigan stars should be 5'11" wigglers who score in droves. Dusty May reaction: We're blindsided that it happened in late June, but didn't expect Dusty to be here for 30 years. It takes a Tom Izzo who loves being the king of a tiny country to do that. Could be a Mike Macdonald/Jesse Minter thing: sometimes you get a legend on his way. Circumstances of college basketball today amplified Dusty's genius. His ability to put together a roster was especially effective in a situation where everybody's rosters are poachable. Converse of Bo, who was the right guy for a time when players were really trapped at one school through the course of their development. Sam: Dusty could have won in any era (point conceded). Boynton/staff? What does "interim" mean? Probably that it's a "you've got a year to show it." Will he be interim for the entirety of next season? Yeah. Then why aren't we calling Josh Schertz? Brian: Disabuse people of the notion that going from college to the NBA is a good idea. Brad Stevens is one man. Dusty? Based on history he'll get chewed up, because NBA coaches are disposable and not really in charge. Beilein lost his damn mind (yes, would say this to his face); he was a fundamentals-teaching college lifer. Counterpoint: Dusty's not as much of a college coach; he's a roster-builder and a locker room guy who loves to watch film, isn't interested in spending half of his time fundraising. Brian goes off on Warde for losing four great coaches to better jobs, Craig argues Dusty told Warde I'm staying and every one of those events is explainable. Sam: There was plenty of evidence you were going to lose Dusty next year, but not this June. Seth argues (borrowing from a commenter) is it doesn't look like we're being proactive (is there any AD in America who wouldn't give Dusty the best contract in the Big Ten?). Consideration: If you poach another coach, that's two rosters and coaching staffs you can build from rather than fighting Dusty for your staff and fighting everyone else in college basketball for your roster. Canham always had three coaches in his drawer. Being a leader doesn't just mean defending your tower; you have to be agile, and ready to make decisive, advantageous moves. From an outsider's perspective, does it look like that's what's going on in our athletics department, or does it look like we're making decisions on ChatGPT? Why Duke kept Scheyer: they grew him, and they have a basketball culture.

They talk about how Scheyer continues to innovate, bringing in Powell to a brand new position as Executive Director of Basketball. Then they take a closer look at Duke's wing rotation for this upcoming season. What areas can Dame Sarr realistically improve upon in his second year? And is Sarr a lock for a starting spot? Where does Sebastian Wilkins fit into this deep Duke rotation? Can Bryson Howard have a freshman Isaiah Evans-like impact as a sparkplug off the bench?

I lay out why Jon Scheyer's results look great on paper but still raise real coaching questions after back-to-back late collapses.• Scheyer's year-by-year tournament finishes and win totals • Why elite recruiting does not equal elite coaching • The Houston Final Four loss and clock management issues • The UConn loss and the end-of-game decision that swings everything • Why I put Scheyer on the hot seat for two seasons • Comparing expectations using Hubert Davis as a benchmark • Using John Calipari's early Kentucky run as the standard for maximizing talent • Dan Hurley's path at UConn and the proof that winning can come after building • The real question for Duke: title game or bust?So please make sure to like, subscribe, comment, tell anyone who's anyone about the show.Support the showhttps://linktr.ee/GetABucketShow for more content!!!

FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageReplacing a legend usually breaks a program, not because the new leader is “bad,” but because the old standard was built on rare chemistry, authority, and time. That's why John Scheyer's rise at Duke basketball feels so unusual: he's stacking wins, stacking trophies, and doing it while resisting the easiest trap of all, trying to become Coach K 2.0.We walk through a simple three-pillar blueprint for coaching succession and leadership transition. First is psychological separation: keeping Duke's elite standards while building a modern voice that players can actually follow. We dig into the idea that managing people is the majority of the job and why that skill doesn't automatically transfer from mentor to assistant. Then we get tactical, looking at an analytics-driven defensive identity centered on rim protection, a teachable foundation for young rosters and one-and-done turnover. Finally, we zoom out to the operating system: a scientific, scalable organizational model that reduces fragility, fights groupthink, and treats decision-making like a discipline.Along the way we talk regression to the mean, why most “following a legend” stories go sideways, and the questions Scheyer asks that many coaches never consider, like whether confidence can be predicted and measured in recruiting. If you care about college basketball, Duke, sports leadership, or building systems that survive turnover, this one is packed with practical takeaways. Subscribe, share this with a friend who loves March Madness, and leave a review with your pick for the hardest coaching shoes to fill.Key Points from the Episode:• the pressure of inheriting a court, banners, and instant title demands  • regression to the mean as the hidden trap in coaching succession  • Scheyer's early results as an outlier case in college basketball leadership  • psychological separation by keeping the standard but changing the voice  • why managing people is the majority of the job  • shifting from perimeter-first habits to rim-protection defensive priorities  • building a scientific, scalable operating model instead of a monarch system  • using human psychology and data to reduce groupthink and improve decisions  hit that subscribe button, please, right now.  And before you go, please drop a comment down below. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageA coaching legend leaves and the program is supposed to wobble. Duke doesn't. We dig into the story behind Duke basketball's stubborn ability to stay on top, from the risky decision that once brought Coach K to Durham to the new reality of John Scheyer taking the keys and winning right away.We talk honestly about why so many college basketball fans resent Duke: blue blood power, huge valuation, stacked recruiting classes, and the one-and-done pipeline that can make rosters feel like NBA waiting rooms. Then we pivot to what really fuels the backlash: sustained dominance. Even after Mike Krzyzewski steps away, Duke keeps putting up an elite winning percentage under Scheyer, and the “regression to the mean” people expect from a successor just doesn't show up.We replay the emotion and symbolism of Scheyer first home opener as head coach at Cameron Indoor Stadium, standing under banners that define the standard. From there, we run through the results from his first four seasons, including ACC titles, deep NCAA Tournament runs, and the kind of year-to-year consistency that usually takes a decade to build. We also set up part two by previewing how Scheyer differentiates himself with a more modern, analytically driven approach built around rim protection and a disciplined organizational model. If you care about leadership after an icon, college basketball coaching, or how winning cultures survive roster churn, hit play, share this with a friend who loves to hate Duke, and leave a review. What do you think matters most in a great coaching succession?Key Points from the Episode:  • the behind-the-scenes hiring story that brought Coach K to Duke despite a 9 and 17 season  • why Duke's blue blood status and one-and-done era fuels resentment  • how banners and expectations shape the pressure on a successor coach  • John Scheyer first night as head coach at Cameron Indoor Stadium  • a fast breakdown of Shire's season-by-season record, ACC results, and NCAA Tournament runs  • why Scheyer .834 winning percentage suggests a sustainable transition  Be sure to check out our show page at teammojoacademy.com, where we have everything we discussed in this podcast as well as other great resources.Until next time, keep getting your mojo up.Other resources: Want to leave a review? We're back with Episode 724, and Scott Rich is back to join Donald as they discuss the close of the transfer portal entry deadline! The portal is closed to new entrants, and Jon Scheyer has successfully kept some continuity on the roster. Isaiah Evans, Maliq Brown, Darren Harris, and Patrick Ngongba will all be back with the Duke Blue Devils next season, and we discuss how welcome a sight that is. In a world where the portal affects everyone, Duke is one of the few power conference teams to not lose any of their main rotation players to the portal. While Duke could look to add a final piece or two, the certain thing is that Scheyer wanted continuity...and he got it. After the break, the two men from Michigan discuss the report that Duke could be playing Michigan in February 2026 in DC. Of course, Donald is happy about the Blue Devils being down the street from him, but we look at the potential matchup and how Jon Scheyer is trying to test his guys with these marquee games. The K Academy is in full effect, and the 2024-25 roster has started doing pickup games with some of the alumni back in town. We discuss what we've heard from the first sessions on DBR Bites Episode 50. Before we get to the intel, Jason and Donald discuss an article from the Raleigh News & Observer on how Jon Scheyer rebuilt this roster for next season. There are some very direct remarks from Scheyer on what he was looking for in constructing this roster and it discusses some of the frank conversations that were had on expectations and competition. We give our thoughts on some of the information from the article that we did not know as well as reiterate some of the stuff we have already discussed on the pod. We then get into the intel. Jason has heard some things about how the players have done with some of the first pickup games of the summer, and we go through the players one by one to discuss how they did. More importantly, Jason and Donald are always jealous of the people who get to go to K Academy every year and are looking for sponsors* for next year. After the break, Jaylen Blakes has committed to the Stanford Cardinal, and we're very happy that he will get a chance to compete for serious minutes next season and get another excellent degree. Masters - score updates - what’s Tiger doing? Played five holes this morning to finish the first round +1, and was right back on to the course about 40 or so minutes later … not sure if it’s an advantage or not for players to get a few holes on the course early or not … 1. It’s a longer day and a fast turnaround, but the counter to that is you’re warmed up and have a feel for the course … 2. Do you feel like you’re trying to catch up to the leaders who finished Round 1 yesterday, so you might reach a bit on shots? Everyone handles it differently, but it is what it is   Jared McCain of Duke announced today he’s going pro … this is of no shock to me; projected by many of the ‘experts’ to be drafted in the first round, seen some mocks of him in the 20’s - GO FOR IT … My guess is we’ll hear Kyle Filipowski announce his intentions for the NBA Draft in the near future Tyrese Proctor coming back to Duke - massive for John Scheyer because there’s a case where Scheyer could lose his starting five … Proctor will be the 2nd most tenured player back for Duke, anticipating Jeremy Roach returns for a 5th year, and that Filipowski leaves for the NBA … Roach, Proctor, and assuming Caleb Foster all return, that’s a lot of experience that’s much needed for a big time recruiting class that’s coming in, where they can shepherd in the youth   Carolina Hurricanes are in action tonight - Game No. 80 on the road at St. Louis - Chicago on Sunday, then Columbus on Tuesday to close out the regular season … There’s still a lot to be gained - looking at the standings, the New York Rangers lost yesterday to the New York Islanders, meaning a win today by Carolina in any way, shape, or form puts the Hurricanes within one point of the Rangers for the top spot in the Metro division, and allows Carolina to stay ahead of Boston for the 2nd best record in the Eastern Conference … but there’s still much for this Canes team to figure out, both individually, and as a team … We’ve seen Andrei Svechnikov the past two games play like the Svech this team needs - a consistent scoring threat that’s physical, wins battles along the wall, and - more importantly - staying out of the penalty box! Evgeny Kuznetsov - he’ll be playing his 18th game with the Canes tonight - didn’t produce any points his first three games with Carolina (to be expected), but then had a four game point streak where he scored 2 goals and had 3 assists … in the 10 games since - 0 goals, 2 assists, -2 while averaging over 14:30/game … if he’s going to be this team’s No. 2 center, and skate on the power play, he needs to be a consistent threat on the ice; not a 5 points every 4 games, but needs to guide a line where he’s creating chances for Necas and Teravainen, because when Carolina has scoring threats throughout the line, that’s when they’re most dangerous. Can’t all fall on the top line and the power play   The Carolina Panthers overall have had a good offseason so far … O-line signings, the Diontae Johnson trade was great, the long-term deal for Derrick Brown is amazing, but there are still holes to be filled, upgrades and needs. Dan Morgan & Dave Canales are not going to fix everything in one offseason, but there are still two positions that are need of a high end player upgrade, one on each side of the ball.  Tight End - Tommy Tremble is okay, but still 23 years old, Ian Thomas is not much more than a blocker/ST guy.

Chris Collins was on the hot seat. If his team didn't vastly improve from the year before, he could be out as head basketball coach at Northwestern. Instead, he guided them to their second trip to the NCAA Tournament and was named coach of the year! But Northwestern isn't Duke where Jon Scheyer is the head coach. Scheyer broke Collins' scoring record at Glenbrook North High School in suburban Chicago. Then Collins helped coach him at Duke where he was Mike Krzyzewski's associate.
