We're back with Episode 724, and Scott Rich is back to join Donald as they discuss the close of the transfer portal entry deadline! The portal is closed to new entrants, and Jon Scheyer has successfully kept some continuity on the roster. Isaiah Evans, Maliq Brown, Darren Harris, and Patrick Ngongba will all be back with the Duke Blue Devils next season, and we discuss how welcome a sight that is. In a world where the portal affects everyone, Duke is one of the few power conference teams to not lose any of their main rotation players to the portal. While Duke could look to add a final piece or two, the certain thing is that Scheyer wanted continuity...and he got it. After the break, the two men from Michigan discuss the report that Duke could be playing Michigan in February 2026 in DC. Of course, Donald is happy about the Blue Devils being down the street from him, but we look at the potential matchup and how Jon Scheyer is trying to test his guys with these marquee games. The K Academy is in full effect, and the 2024-25 roster has started doing pickup games with some of the alumni back in town. We discuss what we've heard from the first sessions on DBR Bites Episode 50. Before we get to the intel, Jason and Donald discuss an article from the Raleigh News & Observer on how Jon Scheyer rebuilt this roster for next season. There are some very direct remarks from Scheyer on what he was looking for in constructing this roster and it discusses some of the frank conversations that were had on expectations and competition. We give our thoughts on some of the information from the article that we did not know as well as reiterate some of the stuff we have already discussed on the pod. We then get into the intel. Jason has heard some things about how the players have done with some of the first pickup games of the summer, and we go through the players one by one to discuss how they did. More importantly, Jason and Donald are always jealous of the people who get to go to K Academy every year and are looking for sponsors* for next year. After the break, Jaylen Blakes has committed to the Stanford Cardinal, and we're very happy that he will get a chance to compete for serious minutes next season and get another excellent degree. Masters - score updates - what’s Tiger doing? Played five holes this morning to finish the first round +1, and was right back on to the course about 40 or so minutes later … not sure if it’s an advantage or not for players to get a few holes on the course early or not … 1. It’s a longer day and a fast turnaround, but the counter to that is you’re warmed up and have a feel for the course … 2. Do you feel like you’re trying to catch up to the leaders who finished Round 1 yesterday, so you might reach a bit on shots? Everyone handles it differently, but it is what it is   Jared McCain of Duke announced today he’s going pro … this is of no shock to me; projected by many of the ‘experts’ to be drafted in the first round, seen some mocks of him in the 20’s - GO FOR IT … My guess is we’ll hear Kyle Filipowski announce his intentions for the NBA Draft in the near future Tyrese Proctor coming back to Duke - massive for John Scheyer because there’s a case where Scheyer could lose his starting five … Proctor will be the 2nd most tenured player back for Duke, anticipating Jeremy Roach returns for a 5th year, and that Filipowski leaves for the NBA … Roach, Proctor, and assuming Caleb Foster all return, that’s a lot of experience that’s much needed for a big time recruiting class that’s coming in, where they can shepherd in the youth   Carolina Hurricanes are in action tonight - Game No. 80 on the road at St. Louis - Chicago on Sunday, then Columbus on Tuesday to close out the regular season … There’s still a lot to be gained - looking at the standings, the New York Rangers lost yesterday to the New York Islanders, meaning a win today by Carolina in any way, shape, or form puts the Hurricanes within one point of the Rangers for the top spot in the Metro division, and allows Carolina to stay ahead of Boston for the 2nd best record in the Eastern Conference … but there’s still much for this Canes team to figure out, both individually, and as a team … We’ve seen Andrei Svechnikov the past two games play like the Svech this team needs - a consistent scoring threat that’s physical, wins battles along the wall, and - more importantly - staying out of the penalty box! Evgeny Kuznetsov - he’ll be playing his 18th game with the Canes tonight - didn’t produce any points his first three games with Carolina (to be expected), but then had a four game point streak where he scored 2 goals and had 3 assists … in the 10 games since - 0 goals, 2 assists, -2 while averaging over 14:30/game … if he’s going to be this team’s No. 2 center, and skate on the power play, he needs to be a consistent threat on the ice; not a 5 points every 4 games, but needs to guide a line where he’s creating chances for Necas and Teravainen, because when Carolina has scoring threats throughout the line, that’s when they’re most dangerous. Can’t all fall on the top line and the power play   The Carolina Panthers overall have had a good offseason so far … O-line signings, the Diontae Johnson trade was great, the long-term deal for Derrick Brown is amazing, but there are still holes to be filled, upgrades and needs. Dan Morgan & Dave Canales are not going to fix everything in one offseason, but there are still two positions that are need of a high end player upgrade, one on each side of the ball.  Tight End - Tommy Tremble is okay, but still 23 years old, Ian Thomas is not much more than a blocker/ST guy.

Chris Collins was on the hot seat. If his team didn't vastly improve from the year before, he could be out as head basketball coach at Northwestern. Instead, he guided them to their second trip to the NCAA Tournament and was named coach of the year! But Northwestern isn't Duke where Jon Scheyer is the head coach. Scheyer broke Collins' scoring record at Glenbrook North High School in suburban Chicago. Then Collins helped coach him at Duke where he was Mike Krzyzewski's associate. They would win a national title in 2010.Collins has a challenge this season with six new players but he has four returning from the squad that made the Big Dance last March. One is Boo Buie who averaged 17 points a game. Collins says this team has to be hungry to pursue accomplishments with this team.In part two of this podcast, Collins also remembers how he was a ball boy for the Chicago Bulls when his father, Doug was coaching them. Collins also enjoys the fact he is the 8th person who attended Northwestern to appear on this podcast.Tell me a story I don't know is sponsored by Mr.Duct. ( mrductcleaning.com). It's certainly not the most fun mostly annual tradition, but the podcast is back to talk about Duke's loss to Tennessee on Saturday, a loss that ends Jon Scheyer's first season in the head coaching role. We dive deep into how the Volunteers dismantled Duke on defense. The Blue Devils had their lowest first half scoring output of the season, and without Mark Mitchell, Duke didn't have enough playmakers to counter Tennessee's attack at either end. Turnovers returned to plague Duke in a way we thought Scheyer's squad had shored up given their performance in the first round. All that said, we have to spend a few minutes on the officiating, which most of us were not thrilled with. It was an overly physical game, and Duke couldn't figure out how to overcome the circumstances. After the break, we have to touch on Duke Blue Planet's feature video on Dereck Lively II and his mother and on Purdue's loss to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the tournament. We'll be back on a future episode to recap the season and speculate about all of the players' pending NBA draft decisions, but until then, stay in touch with us via email and we will talk to you again very soon. The podcast crew, broadcasting for the first time from a swanky swimming pool, begin with lots of praise for the lockdown Duke defense that kept Virginia from getting any easy shots and scared the Cavs into one of the their worst offensive performances of the year. But, Duke's victory was more than just that stifling defense, led by Dereck Lively. On the other end of the floor, Kyle Filipowski and Jeremy Roach combined to almost outscore the Cavaliers all by themselves as they each showed that even one of the best defensive teams in the nation will struggle to find ways to stop Duke's offensive aces. With the NCAA selection show less than 24 hours away, Duke has made a statement and no one wants to see the Devils in their portion of the bracket. Learn more about your ad choices. The article in the Athletic rippled through the Duke community like a bomb going off. Jon Scheyer says he wants more year-to-year continuity in the program and fewer freshmen on the Duke team each year. So, does this mean Duke is done with one-and-done recruits? The DBR Podcast crew is here to break it all down, from what future recruiting classes will look like to how Scheyer can keep players in the program for longer than we have come to expect. The DBR dudes have the numbers and historical examples to give extra depth to this conversation. Plus, they spend some time talking about another recent article in the Athletic that spells out exactly what Coach K has been up to since he retired. How much time is he spending talking to Jon Scheyer and what is K doing with all that extra time in his day? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In the latest episode of DBR Bites, Jason and Sam hop on to talk about sharpshooting Jaden Schutt and whether he is likely to carve out any meaningful playing time for the Blue Devils this year. Jason took part in a press conference with Jon Scheyer earlier this week and asked about Schutt's prospects. We let all of you listen in as Coach Scheyer responds. Both Jason and Sam did their homework for this episode, looking back at Duke history to see whether this year's team is using the bench differently than Coach K did over the years. While it may feel like there is a bit more depth than usual, you will probably be surprised at the degree to which Scheyer differs from K. Learn more about your ad choices. #479 - Looking positively at the loss in Littlejohn

The Duke Blue Devils suffered a 72-64 loss to the Clemson Tigers yesterday at Littlejohn Coliseum. However, while the Blue Devils lost, there were certainly a lot of positive things that one could take away, and we discuss them on Episode 479. It's Jason Evans' birthday, so we seek to make this episode fun in his honor. Jason was also at the game, so he gives his his firsthand account of what it was like to be in the building for this one. We focus on some good performances by Kyle Filipowski and Tyrese Proctor as well as Dereck Lively starting to come along. For a loss, we spend a lot of time on the good, as Duke showed some fight in staying in the ballgame. After the break, we shift to what went wrong, namely the shooting. Jason gives us a soundbite from the postgame press conference where Jon Scheyer is candid about what comes next for Duke as well as his belief that a couple players are ready to break out. We also have brief discussions on whether Jaden Schutt could have helped off the bench as well as the notion by some fans that Scheyer's calm persona means he doesn't have any fire. The DBR Podcast will be back early this week to explain a new podcast format that we think will be great for you all as listeners. The idea will be releasing more episodes that can provide more timely content that will keep you entertained throughout the week. Look out for that explainer episode in the coming days! Dispelling Brain Health Misunderstandings: A Response to Joe Rogan and Max Lugavere

This episode is dedicated to clarification of a podcast between Joe Rogan and Max Lugavere, two popular influencers that have a large audience. They discussed Alzheimer's disease and brain health in general and some of the information that was shared was not accurate, which can be really harmful. This is by no means an attack on Rogan or Lugavere. After listening to the conversation, we think Lugavere may not be quite familiar with the data regarding brain health, and it would be important to set the record straight and share the evidence with people and let them decide what's best for them. Having seen thousands of patients with dementia, whether it's Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal lobe dementia, Lewy Body Dementia and others, we feel it's our responsibility to share evidence based data as opposed to feel-good, self confirming anecdotes.
