Interview with Arlen Roth 2024 Arlen Roth is a true guitar legend; part of the list of who he's recorded and toured with contains folks like Simon & Garfunkel (together and individually), John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Bob Dylan, Bee Gees, Don McLean, Levon Helm, Ry Cooder, Duane Eddy, Danny Gatton, Janis Ian, Dusty Springfield, John Sebastian, Johnny Winter and countless more. He also appeared with Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Patti Smith in the Martin Scorcese Rolling Thunder film, created the guitar parts and was consultant and teacher to Ralph Macchio for the legendary blues film, Crossroads. In 2016, he wrote and performed an acoustic guitar piece with Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom, Jr. of Hamilton for ESPN. Arlen was voted in the Top 100 most Influential guitarists of all time by Vintage Guitar Magazine and top 50 all-time acoustic guitarists by Gibson.com. Now, on Arlen Roth's 20th solo album and his fifth all-acoustic offering, he's bringing rootsy acoustic music to new heights on Playing Out the String, set for release September 27 and distributed by MVD. The new album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Alex Salzman, who also contributes keyboards to the mix. Arlen's previous album, Super Soul Session, with bass legend Jerry Jemmott, sat atop the Blues and Soul charts for 22 straight weeks, and was in the Top 5 for 55 straight weeks this past year. Arlen has also been at the forefront of guitar and music education, with 10 best-selling books, and he was the first-ever to offer video instruction with the giants of the music industry through his “Hot Licks” company, which he started in 1979, and has had millions of students worldwide. His column for Guitar Player magazine was voted #1 by the largest margin of readers from 1982 to 1992, and was also turned into a best-selling book, Hot Guitar. On Playing Out the String, this all-acoustic, mostly solo album is very personal to Arlen and is really like getting an up-close "at home" concert in your living room. On it, he paints with broad strokes across several genres of music he loves. From "Old Timey" Norman Blake material to country blues from Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Tampa Red; he even makes you feel at home with Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'" and gives his 12-string guitar a workout on the archetypical, "Walk Right In." https://www.arlenroth.com

Today The Splendid Bohemians pay homage to three not only consummate artists of the guitar, but teachers of their craft as well - responsible for passing on the mysteries of their music to generations of thankful acolytes. ARLEN ROTH:Arlen Roth is the ultimate sideman and guitar teacher who has played with everybody. His first book, Slide Guitar, was published by Oak Publications when he was 21. Roth is a Telecaster enthusiast who wrote the book Masters of the Telecaster detailing the techniques of many famous Telecaster guitarists. He has been called "Master of the Telecaster.”THE REVEREND GARY DAVIS: A Piedmont style guitar master, The Reverend Gary Davis was a player who became a gospel singer, Christian minister, and teacher. The folk revival of the 1960s invigorated his performing career, when he performed at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Peter, Paul and Mary recorded Davis' version of “Samson and Delilah”, also known as "If I Had My Way", a song by Blind Willie Johnson, which Davis had popularized. The resulting royalties allowed Davis to buy a house and live comfortably for the rest of his life, and Davis referred to the house as "the house that Peter, Paul and Mary built.RY COODER: He is a multi-instrumentalist, but is best known for his slide work, his interest in traditional music, and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries. He is a much sought after film soundtrack artist, and he produced the Cuban music album sensation - Buena Vista Social Club (1997), which became a worldwide hit; Wim Wenders directed the documentary film of the same name (1999), which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2000. Cooder was ranked at No. 8 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.”
Dan Zlotnick has been called “the Americana voice of Westchester County, New York” because his joyous, warm energy emanates through his songs and performances. After a three-year independent minor league baseball career, Dan began writing and performing original music. A child of classic rock radio who dug deep into folk music in college, Dan half-jokingly claims that Jimmy Page taught him guitar and John Prine taught him lyric-writing. His sound is like the multi-generational family photo hanging on the wall, and his lyrics are like the stories you share with your best friends after a hearty home cooked meal. Dan has made fans and friends in living rooms, backyards, and small venues around the country, as well as on prestigious stages like Tarrytown Music Hall, Paramount Hudson Valley Theater, Daryl's House Club, Garcia's at The Capitol Theatre, Pleasantville Music Festival, and Towne Crier Cafe. He has opened for artists including Drew Holcomb, The Felice Brothers, Marc Cohn, Patty Larkin, Jim Avett, Jessica Lynn, Arlen Roth, and more. Whether it's a spin of his latest release, an unplugged solo acoustic house concert, a full band rock show, or something in between, Dan Zlotnick's passion for honest storytelling resonates with everyone who decides to check him out. John Sebastian's rich musical catalogue reflects a life deeply steeped in craft, cultural resonance and history. John's career has taken him from The Lovin' Spoonful to Bob Dylan to Mama Cass to Woodstock to movie soundtracks and beyond. John joins us to share stories of his creatively colorful Greenwich Village childhood, surrounded by folk and classical luminaries, his harmonica virtuoso father, his screenwriting mother and his Godmother, Vivian Vance! His talent and experiences inspired him to write and record an ecclectic array of hits including: Summer In The City, Darlin' Be Home Soon, Welcome Back, Nashville Cats, You Didn't Have To Be So Nice, Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind, Do You Believe In Magic and a bunch more. And John comes to us brining word of his newest album with Arlen Roth called John and Arlen Explore The Lovin' Spoonful Songbook.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Harry and Meghan on Netflix and Harry Chapin: When In Doubt, Do Something, on Prime Video. "THE GREATEST UNKNOWN GUITARIST"IN THE BEGINNING by Roy Buchanan (Polydor, 1974)This is one of my all-time favorite 8 track scores. I bought it for .29 cents at Rockaway Records in Silverlake, CA., and the amount of sublime bliss that it has given me for that paltry sum doesn't equate. This proves the egalitarian potential of the 8 track: for the price of some spare change, one of life's most profound visions may be glimpsed. It is a collector's Eldorado to not only find a hidden treasure in perfect condition, but to get it for a steal. I had never heard of Roy Buchanan when I decided: “what the hell”, and grabbed this immaculate cart,- but Robbie Robertson, Danny Gatton, Arlen Roth, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Jerry Garcia, and many others sure did, and they were influenced by his signature tone - (cited by Guitar Magazine as one of the 50 greatest of all time). And when I popped this cart into the player and heard his plaintive, wailing strings for the first time, I spontaneously burst into tears of delight. This was a decade after his early demise, at age 48, when Roy was found suspiciously hanging by his shirt in a jail cell, after being arrested for “public intoxication”. Just imagine: if he had succeeded in his plan to quit the music business in the mid-60s, and become a hairdresser, the world would never have had these great recordings featuring his signature “pinch” harmonics, volume controlled “wah-wah”, and chicken picking. It's a loss I don't want to contemplate.Legend has it that after Jimi Hendrix stole Roy's wah-wah sound (by cheating with a pedal instead of using the volume control) - Roy decided to refocus his playing towards roots music, and in 1971 when the documentary “Introducing Roy Buchanan” was followed by an offer to this sharecropper's son to join the Rolling Stones (which he declined), the world started taking notice. On this, his fifth and last studio album, Roy delivers all the R&B telecaster goodness one could wish for (abetted by the punchy Tower of Power horns, and funky vocals by Billy Sheffield on Rescue Me and I'm a Ram). In the Beginning made it to #160 on the charts - and onto my eternal playlist.

Episode 187: John Sebastian is most famous as the founder of and songwriter for the Lovin' Spoonful, which produced a fresh crop of folk rock hits in the late 60s. But there's much more to his story. In a full hour conversation, Sebastian talks about learning music in Washington Square in the 50s, about the great song "Nashville Cats," about Woodstock and his time with NRBQ. His most recent project was to team up with guitarist Arlen Roth to reinterpret great songs from the Spoonful catalog. John is a great storyteller and I loved this encounter a lot.

The concept that a deal with the devil could lead to fame and fortune, based on talents lent to you, is not new. Hollywood has done it many ways at various times in cinematic history. However, with the soundtrack efforts of Steve Vai, Ry Cooder, and Arlen Roth, this one is noteworthy. “Crossroads” is a dark film exploring the legend and music of Robert Johnson. This movie begs the question, once a deal of this kind is consummated, can it be reversed? Shaun Booker had been talking about her collaboration with Will Freed. After some examination, I had to get his interview. He’s a hell of a musical soul with a take on everything from the blues to the nation’s drug problem. Music flows through him like water climbing down the Mississippi River. His film choice spoke volumes and the insight was refreshingly new, yet somehow vintage. Take a Delta blues trip with us, as we discuss the movie that moved Will Freed, “Crossroads”. TC
If you haven’t plugged-in and tried a guitar amplifier from Louis Electric Amplifiers yet, I urge you to find the nearest one and do so right away. For the last 25 years, Louis Rosano has been hand-building his amplifiers in a small garage in Bergenfield, New Jersey, these amps have pleased the some of the industry’s heavyweights, from Keith Richards and Ron Wood, to Warren Haynes, Danny Gatton, Anna Popovic, Jackson Browne, Jorma Kaukonen, Hubert Sumlin, and Arlen Roth. I sat and talked with Louis in his shop, right next to the house his Grandparents bought in 1923. It was a beautiful day, the garage door was open, he treated me to a fantastic espresso, but most importantly, I fell deeply in love with his Deltone Reverb Amplifier.
"Record with John Lennon." That was Alex's response when I asked him what the future holds for him. Thing is, if he had the chance, he would probably be the kind of producer Lennon would want. I've seen Alex in action in his studio Starr Ridge, in Brewster, NY., and he never stopped moving during the entire session. It was inspiring to say the least. In this episode, producer, engineer, composer, and mixer, Alex Salzman, shares his unique upbringing in Russia, and the incredible musical journey that has led him to work with the likes of Broadway composer Alan Menkin, Arlen Roth, Ace Frehly, and Sam Butler, to name a few.
