In this episode of Seeing Them Live, we are thrilled to have Jose Rivera, founder, manager, and lead vocalist of the band Five Guys Named Moe. Jose shares his extraordinary journey from a budding musician to a prolific performer. He narrates how his fascination with the trumpet began in his early childhood and flourished during his time as a section leader and soloist for the United States Marine Corps. Jose describes his experiences performing before U.S. Presidents and numerous heads of state from 1972 to 1977.He shares captivating anecdotes about sharing stages with trumpet legends like Doc Severinsen and Al Hirt, and his early inspirations such as Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, and Bill Chase. One particularly memorable story includes a chance encounter with Chase the night before he left for Marine Corps basic training, which solidified his passion for high register trumpet playing. Jose also talks about the devastating impact of the plane crash in 1974 that tragically ended the lives of several members of the band Chase, and the emotional 40-year reunion concert that followed, filled with nostalgia and respect for the members who were lost. Jose reflects on his post-Marine Corps life and the formation of Five Guys Named Moe in 1988. The band quickly gained popularity with their unique style and vibrant performances, playing at numerous gigs across the Midwest every year. Jose's attention to professionalism and the importance of band dynamics and promotions are evident as he speaks about managing the band over the years. The impact of the Moe Heads, the band's loyal fans, is also a testament to their ongoing success. Jose underscores the hard work, dedication, and strategic planning required to sustain a band's longevity in the competitive music industry. As an experienced musician, he offers valuable insights about balancing artistic integrity with crowd-pleasing performances and the reciprocal importance of venue support in promoting events. By mingling with fans and maintaining a professional band practice, Jose ensures that Five Guys Named Moe remains a staple of vibrant live music in the Midwest.BANDS: Al Hirt, Bill Chase, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Blues Brothers, Chicago, Chase, Doc Severinsen, Five Guys Named Moe, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Lovecraft, The Kind, United States Marine CorpsVENUES: CD and Me, Cousins, North and Maple, Tailgaters, Ballydoyle, Buddy Pals, Q Bar, Poplar Creek, Superdome PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708
Sticky Fingers is considered by many to be the greatest studio album the Rolling Stones ever created. This ninth studio album represented a return to a more basic sound for the Stones after several albums with less conventional instrumentation. It was also known for its cover artwork from Andy Warhol which featured a man in jeans with a working zipper. The album won a Grammy for “Best Album Cover” for this innovative design. This was the first album that was released on their own label, Rolling Stones Records. It was also the first album the group produced without Brian Jones, who had died two years earlier. The members of the band were Charlie Watts on drums, Bill Wyman on bass, Mick Taylor on guitar, Keith Richards on guitar and backing vocals, and Mick Jagger on lead vocals and some guitar and percussion. There were a number of session musicians and frequent collaborators involved in the album, including Bobby Keys on sax, and Billy Preston and Ian Stewart on keyboards.Sticky Fingers was the band's first album to reach number 1 on album charts in both the US and the UK. It has since reached triple platinum status, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The album was also the first album to utilize the now-iconic “mouth” for which the group would be known.Friend of the show Mike Fernandez joins us in Bruce's absence, while Rob brings us this amazing album from one of the giants of the rock world in this week's podcast. Wild HorsesThis softer song with a country bent was first released in 1970 by the Flying Burrito Brothers, and subsequently recorded by the Stones after originally thinking the demo wasn't worth recording. It was originally recorded over a three-day period at Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama in 1969. The lyrics are about being on the road, and not being where you really want to be.Brown SugarThe opening track to the album was also the lead single, and reached the top of the charts in the US and Canada, while reaching number 2 on the UK singles chart. The song sounds like a strong rocking one, but the lyrics discuss slavery and rape, a much more serious topic than most realized the lyrics covered.BitchThis track which leads off side two of the album was the B-side to the single “Brown Sugar.” It has a strong brass section — the song originated in a jam, and features Bobby Keys on sax and Jim Price on trumpet. The lyrics are describing love as a bitch but the title probably didn't help the band in its problems with women's groups. Can't You Hear Me KnockingThis is the longest song on the album, clocking in at over seven minutes. The central part of the song lasts for 2:43, with an extended jam following. The entire track was captured in one take, and the band continued with the jam, thinking that the recording was complete. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:One Tin Soldier (from the motion picture “Billy Jack”)This counterculture song was a prominent part of the soundtrack to the action drama "Billy Jack" a part Navajo Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran defending his Freedom School students from angry townspeople. STAFF PICKS:Get It On by ChaseWayne starts out the staff picks with a high energy song from an artist known for his jazz trumpet. Bill Chase brought together a band including three other trumpet players, a rock rhythm section, and front man Terry Richards on lead vocals. This jazz fusion rock piece peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.Let's Get It On by Marvin GayeLynch brings us a track that has taken on a life of its own as the ultimate romance song. Backed by the Funk Brothers, it is the most successful song Gaye produced on Motown Records. It reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and the US Hot Soul Singles chart.Love Her Madly by the DoorsMike features the first single from the album “L.A. Woman,” the sixth studio album from the Doors, and the final album with Jim Morrison before his untimely death. Guitarist Robby Krieger wrote this song while experimenting with a 12-string guitar. It Don't Come Easy by Ringo Starr Rob finishes the staff picks with a non-album single from the drummer of the recently-disbanded Beatles. Fellow Beatle George Harrison produced the single and helped Starr write the song which peaked at number 4 on the US and UK singles charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “The Summer of 42”We exit this week's podcast with the signature song from this Academy Award nominee and coming-of-age movie in the theaters in April 1971. By the time O.G. Horny Horn RICK GARDNER (Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Parliament, et al) had reached his mid-20s, he was already a seasoned vet. After all, he had played with Kansas’ own Fabulous Flippers, a rockin’, blue-eyed soul outfit with a mean horn section famous for humbling Chicago at the Kansas City Rock Festival. Then, using his performance on the Flippers’ Something Tangible album as an audition, Rick had earned a top spot in Chase, blasting alongside his childhood idol, the legendary Bill Chase. So, when Rick found himself stuck in Los Angeles with badass drummer Melvin Webb after a gig had fallen through, he figured he already knew everything he needed to know about playing in a formidable band with top notch-brass.Then came the call to Webb from the J.B. giant himself, trombonist/arranger extraordinaire Fred Wesley—after which Rick wound up at an audition of sorts in Fred’s living room in Hollywood. The young African Americans also present were mostly unknown to Rick, though he did notice that one of them was very skinny and very tall. Charts were put in front of Rick, seriously advanced stuff that would take a high-level set of jazz chops to sight-read. He put his trumpet to his lips and nailed it. Now everyone was laughing, especially the tall fella. But what the bleep was so funny? That’s when Rick found out the lean dude was none other than Bootsy Collins, who along with Fred had never actually heard Rick play before, (though they definitely knew Chase). The laughter was from amazement and relief—this boy from Wichita was going to work out just fine. And that’s how Rick found himself rehearsing in Bootsy’s basement, then on the road to Detroit to work on a brand new project called Stretchin’ Out with BOOTSY’S RUBBER BAND.Rick wasn’t in Kansas anymore. But what started out as supreme awkwardness and culture shock soon became beautiful vibrations of brotherhood. And as far as Rick was concerned, he was playing in the best band, period. The Rubber Band rhythm section were supermen, and he was hitting The One and trading solos with Wesley and another James Brown alum, the sax attacker known as Maceo Parker. But it wasn’t until about a year in—when yet another JB genius named Richard “KUSH” Griffith came onboard as 2nd trumpet—that the HORNY HORNS finally reached the peak of their superpowers. Now, not only were the HH the crème de la crème of funk brass, but Rick had also met his best bud for life. “Kush & Rick was definitely a thang,” Rick confirms.Throughout the mid to late 70s, the Horny Horns put in double, triple, and sometimes even quadruple duty. “They bathed me in The Funk,” says Rick. His playing is all over such staples as Aah… The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! and Bootsy? Player of the Year, as well as some of the finest work that George Clinton and Parliament have ever done, including Motor Booty Affair, Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome, and the almighty Clones of Dr. Funkenstein. Add to that albums by Brides, Parlet, Bernie Worrell, and even the Horny Horns themselves—all of which Rick, Kush, Maceo, and Fred had to support live, oftentimes in the same night! As Rick sums it up: “That’s quite a shower.”After P-Funk, Kush & Rick bounced around for a while, notably touring with Marvin Gaye. But by the 90s, Rick saw that just being a gigging guy provided little stability. So he dug in and learned everything he could about laying down his own stuff. These days, Rick lives with his wife and biz partner Pat in Colorado, where he records and licenses original music, thus far amassing a catalog of 500+ compositions.Rick is an absolute treat to interview, a clear-spoken man who can be rightfully braggadocious and lucidly humble in the same breath. In this ocean-deep, master class conversation, Rick opens up about the emotional highs and lows of his career, answers our technical questions about how The Funk was made, and relates touching personal stories about Glen Goins, Phelps “Catfish” Collins, and of course Kush—including Rick and his wife sharing Kush’s final days. Now that all that coma/personality swap/assault unpleasantness is behind us, let’s get back to what really matters in Sweet Valley: the beach, boys, and miscommunications involving suntan lotion. Marissa is joined by Russ Nickel, funny guy, writer, and former beach boy (not the singing kind…though he does sing in this episode). This is the book about Bill Chase giving Dee Dee Gordon surfing lessons, some sexy Todd-interloper named Patsy, and the school play, Splendor in the Grass.
HEARTBREAKER Jessica is back to her old evil self in episode eight, Heartbreaker, as she plays games with poor old Bill Chase, a big eejit with a tortured past. Add a wildly unsuitable school play, a glamorous love rival for Liz, and a surprising amount of flashbacks and you’ve got some Sweet Valley gold. Listen to the […] La entrada DOUBLE LOVE #8 | HEARTBREAKER se publicó primero en Headstuff.
Alan Ware is our special guest on The Other Side of the Bell. Alan was born in 1937 in Wichita, Kansas. In 1955 Alan joined the Army after which he enrolled at The Berklee School of Music in Boston. Alan left the band as a regular in 1973. Alan played gigs in Las Vegas until 1981 when he was elected Business Gent for the Musicians Union of Las Vegas, Local 369. This wonderful edition of Woody Herman's Band scores in a complete set of great tunes played before a responsive audience at this great Jazz club. The band was youthful and full of great soloists like trumpeters Don Rader, Dusko Goykovich, Bill Chase and Bobby Shew. Trombone virtuoso Harry Southall is also featured. The great tenor saxophonist Sal Nistico was really a star in this band and heard extensively on many tunes. A superb rhythm sections with Nat Pierce on piano and the dynamic Ronnie Zito on drums cooks on every tune. Great arrangements by Rader, Chase, Ralph Burns, Bill Holman and others and a wide variety of tunes make this a wonderful set. The woody clarinet of Mr. Herman is also heard along with the leader's mellow alto saxophone. The "Old Man" (Woody Herman) had a right to be very proud of this edition of the Herman Band. You'll enjoy it too, I'm sure.

Tonight we send birthday wishes to Woodrow Charles Herrman who became better known as Woody Herman, one of the all-time greatest band leaders and one whose place in Jazz history is secure. Woody was born May 16, 1913 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and passed away at age 74 on October 29, 1987. Woody led so many great editions of his bands that he called "Herds" that this one is no exception. Recorded over a period of three nights at Basin Street West in Hollywood in May of 1963, this edition contained a great rhythm section of Nat Pierce on piano (who was also the band's chief arranger), Chuck Andrus on bass and the amazing Jake Hanna on drums. Some of the stars in this band were Bill Chase and Billy Hunt on trumpets, Phil Wilson and Harry Southall on trombones and as always a superb saxophone section with Bobby Jones and Bill Perkins on tenors, Frank Hittner on baritone and the stupendous Sal Nistico on tenor who at the time was the band's most exciting soloist and who's work on the up-tempo tunes left the other players with open mouths!.Then there is "The Old Man"...the glue that held the band together with his warm work on alto saxophone and clarinet and his occasional vocals. Happy Birthday Woody.....Jazz music was changed for the better by your person and your encouragement of young talent. Woody Herman forever!!!
