Have you ever felt like life was nudging (or forcing) you to stop living out of alignment and start living on purpose? In this episode of It's a Mindset, I'm joined by Julie Hyde—leadership and mindset coach, LinkedIn Top Voice, and author of You Always Have a Choice and Busy?. Julie is someone who doesn't just talk about leadership—she embodies it, even when life has thrown her some of its toughest curveballs. Julie opens up about how her cancer diagnosis and major health challenges became a gift—one that realigned her focus, reignited her purpose, and reshaped how she shows up in the world. From corporate leadership to personal transformation, Julie shares practical frameworks and hard-won wisdom to help you live more intentionally and lead from within. As someone who's also faced moments of realignment and reinvention, I found this conversation both grounding and deeply inspiring. Julie reminds us that leadership is not about titles—it's about how we show up in every moment and the ripple effect we create along the way. Key Episode Takeaways: Turn adversity into alignment – How Julie reframed her cancer diagnosis as a catalyst for living more purposefully. Disciplined routines – Why exercise, sleep, and consistent habits are non-negotiable, especially during tough times. Above the line vs. below the line behaviours – A simple but powerful tool to bring awareness to how you lead and respond. Rethinking legacy – Julie's beautiful insight that legacy isn't just what we leave behind—it's how we lead every single day. In this heartfelt episode of Leading You, I open up about the profound impact my cancer diagnosis had on my life and mindset. This episode aims to inspire you to take control of your time and live a life aligned with your true values. I begin by posing a challenging question: If today was your last day, would you be proud of how you spent it? This question became incredibly personal for me the day I learned I had cancer, compelling me to reassess my priorities. I share how this experience taught me that time is not unlimited, and the importance of not putting off the things that truly matter. I delve into the profound realisation that many of us tolerate jobs, relationships, and situations that drain our energy and happiness. This episode emphasises the importance of cutting out the noise—those unnecessary tasks and obligations that don’t align with our values or well-being. I discuss how my diagnosis led me to design my workday around my health and personal enjoyment, rather than being busy for the sake of being busy. Another vital lesson I learned is the significance of being present in the moment. After my diagnosis, I started to appreciate the small joys of life—like the blue sky, the scent of flowers, and simple social interactions—that I previously overlooked. I stress the importance of cherishing these everyday moments rather than constantly planning for the future or dwelling on the past. Throughout this episode, I aim to encourage you to evaluate what you are tolerating in your life and make proactive changes. It's about making small but impactful mindset shifts that can dramatically enhance your quality of life. The episode encapsulates three key lessons: time is not unlimited, cut the noise and choose what matters most, and be present in the moment. I urge you to stop trying and start doing, as every moment counts, and tomorrow is never guaranteed. Join me as we explore these life-changing insights and consider how you can apply them to live a life you truly love. Be proactive in your choices, don’t wait for life-altering events to make necessary changes, and focus on your well-being and happiness. Thank you for tuning in, and I hope this episode serves as a powerful reminder to live for today. Please share, rate, and review this episode to help spread this important message. Julie Hyde is from Melbourne, Australia; an entrepreneur, a huge animal lover, and a wife to an amazing husband. She is driven to making difference and has been empowering people for 14 years now after becoming a corporate dropout from à company she worked with for 21 long years. Working in the banking industry for over two decades, she succeeded in climbing up the ladder every couple of years. The higher she climbed, the clearer her values had become -- role-modeling and doing what she says she's going to do. Deeming that her own values and that of the organization were moving in different directions, she saw herself standing at the fork in the road. Instead of staying and hoping things would get better, she decided it was time to take destiny into her own hands although admittedly, she had no specific idea how to do it at that time. 14 years later, she has become an influential leader of herself with a superpower of simplifying leadership. She is especially empowering women to rewrite history through leadership.Highlights:First step to unshackling: If you are not happy, you have the power to change your situation and create options for yourself Groundwork: walk into your own passion, stock up on who you really are and what you are good at, and make yourself marketable in the right spaces The transition: Crossing the line from corporate to consultancy/entrepreneurship is challenging but extremely liberating as it offers more flexibility and adaptability in many respects Busy vs. Productivity: Busy doesn't mean anything more than doing a lot; productivity results from doing the right thingsMore specifically, she advises everyone to really take time to think about what they are doing in order to find clarity on what and when they should be doing things. Then you will be enabled to determine which things you need to stop doing, what to say yes and what to say no to. Only then will you feel truly fulfilled. Moreover, she resonates that doing more is not better. I have an extra special episode today to mark the 100th episode of Making It Count! So much has happened since my podcasting journey began and I've learned so much from my incredible guests and also about myself. Since launching in 2018, three very significant things happened; I turned 50, Covid came along and changed the world forever and I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. Through it all, I continued to release episodes, connecting with so many incredible people along the way and nearly tripling in downloads. To celebrate this incredible milestone, I've asked the lovely Melissa Williams to jump in the host seat and interview me to help unpack the last 100 episodes. It's been interesting to reflect on the lessons I've learned, how my brand has evolved throughout this journey and how I have personally grown more brave and bold through all my experiences. Although it was a really challenging list to narrow down, I share my top 5 episodes of all time, what I loved about them, and some of the insights that these 5 remarkable guests brought to each episode. I'm so grateful to everyone who has joined me on this journey and for the opportunity to inspire others to make it count in their own way. Being an occasion that is absolutely worth celebrating, I also have a special offer for you! DM at @juliehydeleads to tell me your favourite episode, what you loved most about it and you'll go in the draw to receive a FREE 45 minute coaching session with me. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“I would love for people to talk about (and understand) that busy is bad for them! It's highly overrated and I'd like to break down what this means for us all to live a life that's more fulfilling.”_________Julie Hyde's global reputation was built on transforming large businesses from toxic to top of their game. But one of Julie's mantras in life is turning obstacles into opportunities. Yes, even with cancer. So she sees the diagnosis as a game changer. A vital chance to reassess priorities. Her focus on helping leaders understand modern leadership success is not a numbers game. It's a people game. If you can align both the business and people priorities, your result will be high performance, high retention and high engagement levels. It's a win/win. What are you so busy doing?? I have been consciously trying to avoid using the word “Busy” because, let's face it, we are ALL busy and it's BORING to talk about how busy we are all the time isn't it?? Yet “busy” has become a default answer whenever we are asked “How are you?” My guest in this episode is leadership coach Julie Hyde. Julie's mission is for us to elevate our thinking around what keeps us “busy” and the importance of living and leading with intention. Julie drops loads of gold in this conversation. My favourite quote of her's was “we can't lead others until you can lead yourself”. Boom!. Julie also generously shares a personal story that illustrates exactly why it is so important for us to fill our time with meaningful, purposeful activities. “So, this is Christmas and what have you done? Another year over, a new one just begun.” For the final ‘Making It Count' podcast of 2021 I am sharing some of the biggest takeouts of this year's episodes. We have had the privilege of amazing guests being part of Making It Count, so I am sharing with you some of their top tips so we can bring our best into 2022. One of the biggest take-aways from the episodes this year is to ‘Slow down to go fast'. There is a difference between working to live and living to work. Sleep and sustainable healthy routines and are all incredibly important to our perspective and alignment to our values. There is power in reflection – giving yourself the time and space to reflect on your actions to be able to adjust quickly, rather than falling into bad habits. It's about creating quiet space for your mind, which allows you to find meaning and, create boundaries around the tasks you do each day. Rest and self-care are essential. You cannot lead others if you are not confident in your self-care routine. Are you making the time to attend appointments to look after you? Your health is your wealth! Are you making time to disconnect from technology? Are you making time for the priorities in your life? We need to develop good habits that will transcend the January resolutions. And finally, we need to be intentional. Intentional with our actions and words. It's about operating and living in alignment with your vision, to be the best possible version of yourself for 2022. Kindness is key. Throughout the pandemic, kindness has been shifted to the forefront of our minds. A smile or a text can make such a big difference. It's the mindset of growth, abundance and gratitude. So, sit back and enjoy this episode discussing how we can Bring our Best to 2022. This week on the ‘Making It Count' podcast I thought I would re-introduce myself as well as share some insights for leaders as our attention turns to the new year. I am Julie Hyde and I believe that heart-led leaders make the world a better place for all. When we role model positive and empowering leadership we show others what is possible. When we step up and stand in our spotlight, and have the confidence to lead authentically, that is where the magic happens. And, this is where we grow. This is the driving force behind what I do, and the reason I began this Podcast. I wanted to share the insights of those who are the leadership life-blood of our community. I have learnt first hand what it takes to be an effective leader over my 21-year award-winning career. I work with leaders who want to be strong and effective role models who enable their team to shine. Leadership is now about people. This is a shift we have seen in the last 2 years. We have all been effectively forced to a period of reflection and re-set, people have emerged very differently. We have seen the shift to working from home and that it can be done well. All of these changes mean we cannot return to the ‘normal pre-pandemic' workforce. How, when, and where people want to work has changed. Leaders who have accepted this change see 55% of their work-force as high performers. Currently is a huge mis-alignment between what leaders are wanting and what their workforce is wanting in how they work. By becoming a relevant, open leader who is flexible and agile, we are more likely to retain staff in this era of ‘the great resignation'. The employment market in Australia right now is so tight. People have a new perspective and want their personal lives to reflect this change. As leaders, we have to think differently and reimagine what the workforce and workplace looks like within our organisations. So, the question becomes how can we move with these changes? Recognise that your people are the power in your business. If you are not aligned with your people, you are playing a losing game. Working with your people to find alignment is the best way to fail-safe your business for 2022. So, sit back and enjoy this episode with as our host, Julie Hyde, Makes It Count. In this episode of the ‘Making It Count' podcast, we get a one-on-one with our host, Julie Hyde. This year is flying past at a rapid speed. 2021 has been a rollercoaster for most of us with lots of disruption so, I wanted to share with you what I have been observing in the business landscape over the last 6 months. The game has changed for leaders and it is time to level up and play a smarter game. So, what do leaders need to be aware of moving forward? Fatigue is my number one observation. Although we have become better at managing the disruption, we are continuing to put out spot fires of different intensity. Teams have had to deal with lots of change including the cancelling of holidays. This has a huge impact on performance and wellbeing. In a recent survey, 87% of people believe it is the perfect time to innovate and change how things have always been done. 76% have also seen 2020 as a chance to re-prioritise. As a result, people are taking shorter, more frequent blocks of leave. This can become a problem for business. So, as leaders, we need to make a shift from ‘the employee experience' to ‘the life experience'. Supporting your employees in their personal lives more effectively enables them to not only live better lives, but also to perform at a higher level. Employers who do this, see a 21% increase in productivity. I have also seen a trend called ‘The Great Resignation', referring to the number of people switching jobs. In the US alone, April saw more than 4million people quit their jobs, which is the biggest spike on record. Why? The biggest factor is how staff are being treated by their employers. Flexibility has also become a factor. Since the events of 2020, there has been a 63% increase in the expectation that workplaces will be managing a hybrid workplace. We need to measure output vs time at the desk. When, or even where, people are completing their work has become an old mindset. Everyone is exhausted and this is one of the top three issues faced by leaders as it impacts performance. So, how can you keep your work forced energised? I believe that we need to align our priorities and needs, to create a high-performance culture. It is no longer one size fits all as people are more in tune with what is important for them. We need to be creating a culture where employees feel valued and understand how they contribute to the higher purpose of the organisation. As leaders we need to throw away the numbers and understand that your people are the power of your business. Relationships and trust are key. This is where we really need to level up. If your people don't trust you, it will impact on performance, culture and engagement. We need to understand what people want and, how to get the most out of them. Taking time for reflection is a great way to elevate our thinking as leaders and constantly re-asses the needs of our team. Reflection gives our brains an opportunity to pause amongst the chaos, to untangle observations and then create meaning. I believe that leadership is the difference that makes the difference. By walking in the shoes your employees you can drive change and creating high performing team. So, sit back and enjoy this episode with Julie Hyde as she shares how we can Make It Count as a leader. Firstly, Happy New Year! Welcome back to Series 2 of Making It Count. For many in Australia, the year certainly hasn’t started well. It’s been heartbreaking to see our Great Southern Land burning with the Vic and NSW fires consuming lives, property, wildlife and livelihoods in it’s path. It’s devastating and my heart goes out to all affected. I just can’t fathom what these people have been going through and witnessing at this time.On a positive note, in tough times, the true Australian spirit shines through the darkness and I am in awe of the courage and dedication shown by our fire fighters and the many volunteers who are helping at this time and beyond. As with any crisis situation, there are lessons that we can take out of this dreadful situation as leaders. That is what this podcast is focused on. There is one man I wouldn’t want to be in the shoes of right now and that’s our Prime Minister! I’m not about to make judgments or play the blame game here, there’s plenty of that going on. However, I have used this first podcast of season 2 to talk about the three biggest lessons I have learnt as a leader from this situation. The message from people both directly and indirectly impacted is very loud and clear and these voices provide a clear indication of what people are looking for from their leader in tough times. These are:PresenceEmpathySupportDonationsIf you would like to assist the wonderful organisations that are assisting the victims, both human and wildlife, during this time, here are some that you can consider:Bendigo Bank (Vic Govt endorsed and donated)Kangaroo Island Mayor AppealCFA - Country Fire Association (Vic)RFS - Rural Fire Service (NSW)Salvation ArmyWildlifeZoos Vic has set up an emergency fundWildlife Rescue - WIRES

Yes, some of us get to live these again, much wiser!Thank you so much for your support this year and I truly hope you have enjoyed the podcasts and the insights shared. As always, if there are any topics you would like to hear about or if you have any guest suggestions please let me know.Looking forward to chatting with you back here in 2020!
