What happens when a woman becomes so good at responding to everyone else’s needs that she completely loses connection to her own? In this deeply reflective episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde explores a question that stops even the most capable women in their tracks: “What do you want when nobody needs anything from you?” It sounds simple. But for many high-performing women, the answer is far more difficult than expected. This episode dives into why so many successful women lose touch with their own desires, needs and sense of self after years of being rewarded for competence, responsibility and reliability. Julie unpacks the hidden cost of constantly being the “safe pair of hands” — the person everyone depends on — and why that identity can quietly crowd out personal fulfilment, joy and direction. Through stories from coaching clients and insights from years working with leaders and ambitious women, Julie explores: Why high-performing women struggle to answer what they truly want The difference between knowing what to do and knowing what you desire How responsibility, identity and fear bury personal fulfilment Why many women feel foggy, flat or disconnected despite looking successful on the outside The emotional cost of constantly living in response mode The role of people pleasing, obligation and performance identity How to reconnect with yourself without needing to blow up your life Why silence and space are essential for clarity The danger of building a life around “should” Small but powerful ways to reconnect with your own voice again Julie also shares the story of a highly accomplished client who realised she had spent years knowing exactly what everyone else needed from her — but no longer knew what she needed for herself. This episode is an invitation to pause long enough to ask yourself an honest question many women have not considered in years. What do you actually want? What happens when the life that looks successful on the outside is slowly costing you everything on the inside? In this powerful episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde sits down with leadership expert, former corporate executive and author Fleur Marks to explore the hidden cost of perfectionism, burnout and achievement addiction. For years, Fleur appeared to have it all. A successful corporate career, leadership credibility, a loving family and a reputation for delivering exceptional results. But beneath the surface, she was exhausted, overwhelmed and carrying impossible expectations. Then her body forced her to stop. Following a life-threatening health crisis, multiple surgeries, autoimmune disease and cancer, Fleur found herself confronting a reality she could no longer push through. What followed became the catalyst for a complete reset of how she lived, worked, led and defined success. Together, Julie and Fleur explore why so many high-performing women tie self-worth to achievement, how perfectionism disguises itself as excellence, and why sustainable leadership requires boundaries, recovery and self-compassion. In this episode, we discuss: Perfectionism and high-functioning burnout The overachiever identity and achievement addiction Leadership pressure and emotional exhaustion Chronic stress and the impact on physical health Why ambitious women struggle with "being enough" Sustainable success and redefining achievement Boundaries, rest and recovery for leaders The neuroscience behind overachievement Excellence without self-sacrifice How to break the overachiever cycle One of the most powerful moments in the conversation centres around a simple but confronting question: "How different would your life be if you truly believed you were enough, had done enough and had enough?" This episode is for leaders, founders, professionals and ambitious women who are tired of carrying everything while quietly running on empty. What does a cereal box have to do with leadership, reputation and career progression? More than most people realise. In this solo episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde unpacks one of the most powerful metaphors she uses with clients when discussing identity, leadership positioning and professional reputation. Because just like products on a supermarket shelf, people make decisions about you long before they understand the full picture. Your reputation is your packaging.Your behaviours are your ingredients panel. And whether intentional or not, you are constantly training people how to see you. This episode explores why highly capable leaders often become trapped inside outdated perceptions, how behaviours reinforce professional identity over time, and why visibility alone will not move you into your next level of leadership. Julie also explores research from organisational psychologist Dr Tasha Eurich around self-awareness and why the gap between how we see ourselves and how others experience us often widens at senior levels. In this episode, we cover: Leadership identity and reputation Why behaviours shape positioning The danger of becoming known only as “the doer” Strategic positioning vs visibility Self-awareness and executive perception How leaders accidentally reinforce outdated identities Repositioning yourself for future leadership opportunities Why delivering more is not always the answer If you have ever wondered why you continue being seen for the same type of work despite wanting more influence, this episode will challenge how you think about leadership growth. Because your reputation is already speaking for you. The question is… what is it saying? In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde sits down with Peter Norris to explore a story that challenges assumptions about identity, leadership and what is actually possible. Peter grew up in an environment where crime was normalised. His father was one of Australia’s most wanted bank robbers, his brother followed a similar path, and by the age of six, Peter was already involved in break-ins. At thirteen, he made a decision that changed the direction of his life. This conversation explores that moment, the choices that followed, and what it takes to step away from what feels inevitable. It also moves into leadership, where Peter now leads a multimillion-dollar hospitality group with a clear philosophy built on courage and kindness. In this episode, you’ll hear: The defining decision that changed Peter’s trajectory How environment shapes belief and what becomes possible Why small, consistent choices matter more than big moments The tension between loyalty, identity and personal responsibility How to lead with both courage and kindness in today’s workplace The role of belief in shaping performance and culture This is a conversation about choice, ownership and leadership. It challenges the idea that your past determines your future, and reinforces the impact of the decisions you make over time. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde unpacks a common frustration for high-performing professionals who feel stuck in their careers despite consistently delivering strong results. The insight is simple, but confronting. You are not being overlooked. You are being categorised. Organisations naturally group people based on patterns they observe over time. Some are seen as leaders who shape direction, while others are seen as reliable executors who deliver. Both are valuable, but they are treated very differently when opportunities arise. This episode explores why doing more does not change how you are perceived, how strong performance can reinforce the wrong identity, and what needs to shift if you want to move into your next level of leadership. If you are known as the safe pair of hands but want to be seen as someone who leads, influences and shapes decisions, this conversation will help you understand what is really happening and how to start changing it. Key Takeaways Career progression is driven by perception, not effort Doing more can reinforce the identity that is keeping you stuck The shift required is positioning. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde sits down with financial advisor and retirement strategist Jenny Brown to challenge the way we think about retirement. Because for most people, retirement has been framed as an end point. Work hard, build your career, save enough… then stop. But what happens after that? Jenny brings over 30 years of experience to this conversation, along with insights from her book Retirement: The Great Escape Plan, and what becomes clear very quickly is this… retirement planning is not just about money. It’s about how you want to live. Together, they unpack the biggest mistake people make when planning for retirement, why starting with numbers can lead you in the wrong direction, and how to shift your thinking towards purpose, identity and lifestyle. This conversation explores: Why retirement is a transition, not a finish line The importance of designing your life before you design your finances The four stages of retirement and what to expect at each phase The identity shift that comes when work is no longer your anchor Why structure, connection and meaning matter more than you think The reality of aged care and why it requires early awareness, not reactive decisions If you’re in your 40s, 50s or beyond, this episode will challenge how you think about retirement and give you a more intentional way to approach what comes next. Because retirement isn’t something you drift into. It’s something you design. Episode Timestamps 00:00 Aged Care Minefield00:39 Meet Jenny Brown01:46 Why She Wrote the Book04:04 The Four Stages of Retirement08:53 Aged Care Reality Check12:49 Mastermind Break14:00 Common Retirement Planning Mistakes16:50 Identity After Work19:29 Creating Rhythm in Retirement21:36 Finding Your Financial Freedom Number23:17 The Retirement Mindset Shift24:11 Wrap Up and Next Steps Key Takeaways Retirement is not a finish line. It’s a transition that requires intention, not assumption. Most people start with the wrong question. Instead of asking “How much do I need?”, start with “What do I want my life to look like?” The people who thrive in retirement are not necessarily the wealthiest. They are the ones who have built purpose, connection and structure into their lives. Identity plays a bigger role than most realise. When work stops, many people struggle with who they are without it. Aged care is one of the most complex and emotional parts of retirement planning. The best decisions come from slowing down, asking questions and understanding your options early. If you’re in your 40s or 50s, now is the time to start thinking about your next phase, not just financially, but personally. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde is joined by memory expert and Australian memory champion Tansel Ali for a fascinating conversation about memory, focus and mental performance in a world full of distractions. What makes Tansel’s story so powerful is that he didn’t begin with a brilliant memory. In fact, he believed the opposite. For years he saw himself as someone who constantly forgot things, struggled to retain information and relied on Post-it notes just to stay organised. Then everything changed. After discovering memory techniques through a friend, Tansel began deliberately training his brain. That journey led him to extraordinary achievements, including memorising two full Yellow Pages directories in just 24 days. It sounds impossible, yet his story is a reminder that the brain is far more trainable than most people realise. In this conversation we go beyond memory techniques. We explore how memory training strengthens focus, improves communication and supports clearer thinking, something that matters enormously for leaders navigating complex and fast-moving environments. We also talk about cognitive overload, a challenge so many leaders face today. Moving from meeting to meeting, decision to decision, conversation to conversation without pause can leave the brain scattered and exhausted. Tansel explains why this doesn’t just feel draining. It actively weakens recall, focus and mental clarity. Another important theme in this episode is the role of AI and technology. Tools like AI can support our thinking, but they should never replace it. As Tansel explains, if we outsource too much of our thinking and remembering to technology, we risk weakening the very skills that help us lead well. We also dive into practical ideas, including simple strategies to remember names, prepare your brain before meetings and reduce the mental clutter that drains focus and energy. If you have ever felt mentally overloaded, distracted or forgetful, this episode will challenge how you think about memory and give you practical ways to sharpen your mind. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde challenges the common advice given to women in leadership to “speak up more” and “be more visible”. While it sounds empowering, Julie explains why speaking up on its own is not a strategy and how, without clarity and positioning, visibility can actually weaken your influence rather than strengthen it. Drawing on years of working with capable professionals in leadership and business, Julie explores the difference between participation and contribution, why relevance matters more than volume, and how anchoring yourself to your values and future direction gives your voice real authority. If you want your voice to carry weight, not just volume, this episode will help you think differently about influence, positioning and leadership presence. Resilience is often described as strength. But real resilience is far less polished. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde sits down with Australian entrepreneur, author, and founder of Runway Room, Alex Fevola, for a powerful and deeply grounded conversation about rebuilding when life changes overnight. At 22, Alex became a young mum. Weeks later, she lost her partner. On the same day, she experienced a medical emergency that resulted in major surgery and waking with a colostomy. It is an extraordinary chapter of loss, trauma, and shock, but this conversation is not about drama. It is about what happens next. Alex speaks honestly about grief, journalling, hope, and the truth behind the question, “How did you cope?” There was no magic trick. There was support, feeling what needed to be felt, and choosing, when she could, to move forward. From there, the episode moves into entrepreneurship. How working with women in hair and makeup became a source of independence and purpose. How spotting a gap in the market led to the creation of Runway Room. And what it really takes to build a beauty brand in a competitive industry without cutting corners on ethics or performance. This is a conversation about tenacity over talent. About long-term thinking. About authenticity in a filtered world. And about leading yourself through seasons you never planned for. If you are navigating change, building something meaningful, or rebuilding after disruption, this episode will resonate. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde continues the conversation on leadership identity and explores one of the most important shifts high-performing women must make. Moving from being the dependable Achiever or Go-To to becoming the trusted Authority. Many capable women are rewarded for being reliable, responsive, and indispensable. But over time, these identities can quietly limit influence, visibility, and progression. In today’s fast-changing workplace shaped by AI, restructures, and leaner teams, relevance is everything. Julie shares a powerful client story of a high-performing leader returning from maternity leave who found herself misaligned and overlooked despite strong results. Nothing changed externally until she shifted internally. Within three months of repositioning herself, she was promoted. This episode introduces three forward-facing identities that support long-term leadership influence: the Author, the Anchor, and the Authority. It also unpacks why women delay this shift and what courage really looks like in practice. If you’re performing well but sensing friction, exhaustion, or stagnation, this episode will help you reflect on who you’re being rewarded for being and who you need to become next. In this solo episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde speaks directly to a pattern she is seeing again and again, particularly among high-performing women. Capable, committed leaders who start the year with strong intentions, only to find themselves slipping back into old habits that no longer serve where they want to go. Julie explores why this isn’t a motivation problem or a confidence gap. It’s often an identity issue. Many women continue to lead from roles that once kept them safe, successful, and rewarded, but now quietly limit their influence and growth. In a rapidly changing environment shaped by AI, restructures, and leaner organisations, being reliable, helpful, and endlessly available no longer guarantees visibility or progression. In some cases, it keeps leaders overextended, overlooked, and misaligned. Julie introduces three common identities she sees women cycling through: the Self Editor, the Achiever, and the Go-To. Each is socially rewarded, professionally reinforced, and emotionally difficult to release, even when it’s clear they’ve been outgrown. This episode also unpacks the early signs of misalignment, why burnout is often about identity rather than workload, and how to begin shifting how you show up through intentional reflection and boundary-setting. If you’ve felt frustrated, stuck, or quietly exhausted despite performing well, this conversation will help you name what’s happening and consider what needs to change next. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde is joined by Bridget Bell, celebrity stylist, personal stylist, and founder of Style Ambition, for a warm and honest conversation about confidence, identity, and the emotional side of getting dressed. With more than two decades in the fashion and television industry and over 150 celebrity shoots behind her, Bridget brings deep experience and relatability to the topic of personal style. Her work goes far beyond clothes. It’s about helping women feel seen, comfortable, and confident in who they are right now. Julie and Bridget explore how style often becomes tangled with self-doubt, body changes, and life transitions. They talk about why so many women hide behind “safe” outfits, hold onto clothes that no longer fit their lives, and delay investing in themselves until they feel “ready”. This conversation unpacks how thoughtful dressing can become a form of self-leadership. From capsule wardrobes and proportion to fit, colour, and illusion dressing, Bridget shares practical insight alongside deeply human reflections on ageing, weight fluctuation, and visibility. If you’ve ever stood in front of your wardrobe feeling frustrated, disconnected, or unsure of yourself, this episode will help you rethink style as a source of ease, confidence, and self-respect. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde is joined by Jaqui Lane, business historian, author, and founder of The Book Advisor, for a grounded conversation about why writing a book remains one of the most powerful ways to build thought leadership and credibility. With more than 20 years in publishing and over 400 business books behind her, Jaqui brings rare clarity to what actually stops capable leaders from writing. It’s not confidence. It’s not talent. It’s a lack of structure, direction, and understanding who the book is really for. Julie and Jaqui explore the shift that happens when you stop writing for yourself and start writing for your audience. They talk about the fears that surface when people consider writing, the myths that keep books stuck in drawers, and the mistakes that cost time, energy, and momentum. This conversation also unpacks why a book is more than a personal milestone. It’s a strategic asset. One that can articulate your thinking, open doors, and position you as a trusted authority long after the writing is finished. If you’ve ever felt the pull to write a book, questioned whether you have something worth saying, or wondered if a book still matters in today’s content-heavy world, this episode will give you clarity and perspective without overwhelm. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde is joined by Dr Paul Taylor for a grounded, practical conversation about a concept most people haven’t heard explained clearly. Hardiness. We talk about resilience constantly, but Paul offers something sharper and more useful. Psycho-physiological hardiness is the ability to grow through stress, not just survive it. It’s about building a mind and body that can handle the real world, not the cushioned version many of us are living in. Paul’s background is as credible as it gets. He’s a former Royal Navy air crew officer, trained in combat survival and resistance to interrogation, and holds postgraduate qualifications across psychology, exercise science, nutrition, and neuroscience. He’s also the author of Death by Comfort and his latest book, The Hardiness Effect. This is a conversation about the cost of modern comfort, the way our stress tolerance is quietly shrinking, and why strength is built through challenge, recovery, and meaningful discomfort. Julie and Paul explore the science behind why the right kind of stress can make us stronger, the difference between resilience and hardiness, and what leaders can do to build greater capacity in themselves, their teams, and the next generation. If you’re heading into 2026 wanting to feel clearer, stronger, and more capable, this episode will challenge your thinking in the best possible way. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde explores one of the most underestimated drivers of self-leadership and emotional stability. The first hour of your day. This is not a conversation about rigid routines, early alarms, or aspirational morning habits that don’t survive real life. It’s a grounded look at how the way you begin your day quietly shapes your energy, focus, decision-making, and leadership identity. Julie shares a personal moment when her own morning routine slipped and the subtle but noticeable impact it had. Feeling scattered, reactive, and overwhelmed without a clear reason, until she recognised what had shifted. Her mornings were no longer hers. This episode invites reflection on how easily the first hour of the day is handed over to phones, calendars, and external demands. Julie reframes mornings not as productivity tools, but as a leadership anchor. A space to regulate your nervous system, reconnect with intention, and choose how you want to show up. Rather than offering a rigid formula, the conversation centres on three simple choices that can change the tone of your day. Choices that are realistic, repeatable, and designed to work alongside busy lives and leadership responsibilities. Conversation Talking Points Why the first hour of the day quietly sets the tone for everything that follows How early phone use shifts emotional state and focus The difference between goals, resolutions, and daily structure What happens when women lose the only quiet space they have A simple three-part way to think about mornings Emotional regulation and decision-making early in the day Identity, consistency, and why routines stick or fall away Time Stamps 00:00 Welcome to the episode01:00 Why resolutions don’t last02:40 Goals versus routines04:00 Why the first hour of the day matters06:10 What most people do wrong in the morning08:00 When my own routine slipped11:30 How routines support emotional stability13:10 The science behind calmer mornings15:20 Protecting your mornings as a leader17:00 The three core choices that shape your day21:30 Making routines work in real life24:20 Identity-based routines26:00 Tracking how you feel, not perfection27:40 The question that reframes your entire day29:10 Closing Links: Learn more about my group coaching program here Connect with Julie: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/julie-hyde/Instagram: @juliehydeleadsWebsite: https://juliehyde.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde is joined by Preeti Inchody for a deeply human conversation about what happens when life interrupts momentum and forces an unexpected pause. Preeti is an accomplished M&A advisor, known for operating at pace, leading with precision, and managing complexity with confidence. A simple accident during a family holiday changed everything. A fall resulted in multiple fractures, surgeries, and a long period of immobility that brought her professional and personal life to a sudden halt. This conversation explores what unfolded beyond the physical recovery. The shock of losing independence. The mental and emotional weight of slowing down when you are used to moving fast. The identity shift that occurs when productivity, control, and capability are stripped away. Julie and Preeti talk openly about surrendering control, asking for help, and navigating a season that could not be rushed or fixed. They also explore the unexpected clarity that emerged. A reassessment of boundaries. A quieter but stronger form of leadership. And a shift from proving to trusting. This episode is not about crisis or drama. It’s about awareness. It invites reflection on the pace we keep, the assumptions we make about strength, and what becomes possible when we listen before life forces us to. In this episode of Leading You, Julie Hyde is joined by former professional surfer and mental health advocate Cooper Chapman, founder of The Good Human Factory, for a grounded and practical conversation about mental health, resilience, and leadership in a high-pressure world. Cooper shares how personal loss, family experience, and years as an elite athlete shaped his commitment to mental health education. What began as a small school initiative has grown into a global wellbeing movement, a bestselling book (The 1% Good Club), corporate programs, and an invitation to speak at the United Nations. Together, Julie and Cooper explore why mental health is not something to fix when life falls apart, but something to strengthen daily through small, intentional habits. They unpack the power of the 1% rule. Just 14 minutes a day dedicated to mental wellbeing can significantly shift how leaders manage pressure, ambition, burnout, and identity. This episode dives into the link between self-leadership and mental resilience, the danger of tying identity to performance, and why adaptability, self-kindness, connection, and time in nature are essential practices for modern leaders. Cooper also reflects on what surfing taught him about failure, emotional regulation, and staying grounded when things do not go to plan. If you are a leader, high performer, or ambitious professional looking to build sustainable mental strength heading into 2026, this conversation offers perspective, calm, and practical insight without overwhelm. What if the clarity you’ve been craving doesn’t come from vision boards or five-year plans… but from pressure? In this solo episode, Julie Hyde gets brutally honest about the moments that pushed her to breaking point—financial stress, a cancer diagnosis, and the realisation that “fine” was a trap keeping her stuck. These weren’t just hard seasons. They were turning points. And they forced one truth to the surface. When your back’s against the wall, you stop performing—and start leading from truth. This isn’t about glorifying struggle. It’s about understanding the role discomfort plays in growth, alignment, and empowered decision-making. If you’ve been ignoring that quiet inner voice or waiting for the ‘right time’ to make a change… this is your wake-up call. In this episode, Julie shares: Why we delay change until the pain outweighs the fear The biology of discomfort—and how it sharpens your focus Her personal story of rock bottom (twice) The mindset shift that put her back in the driver’s seat How to make one bold, aligned move—before crisis forces your hand

In this heartfelt episode of Leading You, I open up about the profound impact my cancer diagnosis had on my life and mindset. This episode aims to inspire you to take control of your time and live a life aligned with your true values. I begin by posing a challenging question: If today was your last day, would you be proud of how you spent it? This question became incredibly personal for me the day I learned I had cancer, compelling me to reassess my priorities. I share how this experience taught me that time is not unlimited, and the importance of not putting off the things that truly matter. I delve into the profound realisation that many of us tolerate jobs, relationships, and situations that drain our energy and happiness. This episode emphasises the importance of cutting out the noise—those unnecessary tasks and obligations that don’t align with our values or well-being. I discuss how my diagnosis led me to design my workday around my health and personal enjoyment, rather than being busy for the sake of being busy. Another vital lesson I learned is the significance of being present in the moment. After my diagnosis, I started to appreciate the small joys of life—like the blue sky, the scent of flowers, and simple social interactions—that I previously overlooked. I stress the importance of cherishing these everyday moments rather than constantly planning for the future or dwelling on the past. Throughout this episode, I aim to encourage you to evaluate what you are tolerating in your life and make proactive changes. It's about making small but impactful mindset shifts that can dramatically enhance your quality of life. The episode encapsulates three key lessons: time is not unlimited, cut the noise and choose what matters most, and be present in the moment. I urge you to stop trying and start doing, as every moment counts, and tomorrow is never guaranteed. Join me as we explore these life-changing insights and consider how you can apply them to live a life you truly love. Be proactive in your choices, don’t wait for life-altering events to make necessary changes, and focus on your well-being and happiness. Thank you for tuning in, and I hope this episode serves as a powerful reminder to live for today. Please share, rate, and review this episode to help spread this important message. Julie Hyde is from Melbourne, Australia; an entrepreneur, a huge animal lover, and a wife to an amazing husband. She is driven to making difference and has been empowering people for 14 years now after becoming a corporate dropout from à company she worked with for 21 long years. Working in the banking industry for over two decades, she succeeded in climbing up the ladder every couple of years. The higher she climbed, the clearer her values had become -- role-modeling and doing what she says she's going to do. Deeming that her own values and that of the organization were moving in different directions, she saw herself standing at the fork in the road. Instead of staying and hoping things would get better, she decided it was time to take destiny into her own hands although admittedly, she had no specific idea how to do it at that time. 14 years later, she has become an influential leader of herself with a superpower of simplifying leadership. She is especially empowering women to rewrite history through leadership.Highlights:First step to unshackling: If you are not happy, you have the power to change your situation and create options for yourself Groundwork: walk into your own passion, stock up on who you really are and what you are good at, and make yourself marketable in the right spaces The transition: Crossing the line from corporate to consultancy/entrepreneurship is challenging but extremely liberating as it offers more flexibility and adaptability in many respects Busy vs. Productivity: Busy doesn't mean anything more than doing a lot; productivity results from doing the right thingsMore specifically, she advises everyone to really take time to think about what they are doing in order to find clarity on what and when they should be doing things. Then you will be enabled to determine which things you need to stop doing, what to say yes and what to say no to. Only then will you feel truly fulfilled. Moreover, she resonates that doing more is not better. I have an extra special episode today to mark the 100th episode of Making It Count! So much has happened since my podcasting journey began and I've learned so much from my incredible guests and also about myself. Since launching in 2018, three very significant things happened; I turned 50, Covid came along and changed the world forever and I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. Through it all, I continued to release episodes, connecting with so many incredible people along the way and nearly tripling in downloads. To celebrate this incredible milestone, I've asked the lovely Melissa Williams to jump in the host seat and interview me to help unpack the last 100 episodes. It's been interesting to reflect on the lessons I've learned, how my brand has evolved throughout this journey and how I have personally grown more brave and bold through all my experiences. Although it was a really challenging list to narrow down, I share my top 5 episodes of all time, what I loved about them, and some of the insights that these 5 remarkable guests brought to each episode. I'm so grateful to everyone who has joined me on this journey and for the opportunity to inspire others to make it count in their own way. Being an occasion that is absolutely worth celebrating, I also have a special offer for you! DM at @juliehydeleads to tell me your favourite episode, what you loved most about it and you'll go in the draw to receive a FREE 45 minute coaching session with me. What are you so busy doing?? I have been consciously trying to avoid using the word “Busy” because, let's face it, we are ALL busy and it's BORING to talk about how busy we are all the time isn't it?? Yet “busy” has become a default answer whenever we are asked “How are you?” My guest in this episode is leadership coach Julie Hyde. Julie's mission is for us to elevate our thinking around what keeps us “busy” and the importance of living and leading with intention. Julie drops loads of gold in this conversation. My favourite quote of her's was “we can't lead others until you can lead yourself”. Boom!. Julie also generously shares a personal story that illustrates exactly why it is so important for us to fill our time with meaningful, purposeful activities. “So, this is Christmas and what have you done? Another year over, a new one just begun.” For the final ‘Making It Count' podcast of 2021 I am sharing some of the biggest takeouts of this year's episodes. We have had the privilege of amazing guests being part of Making It Count, so I am sharing with you some of their top tips so we can bring our best into 2022. One of the biggest take-aways from the episodes this year is to ‘Slow down to go fast'. There is a difference between working to live and living to work. Sleep and sustainable healthy routines and are all incredibly important to our perspective and alignment to our values. There is power in reflection – giving yourself the time and space to reflect on your actions to be able to adjust quickly, rather than falling into bad habits. It's about creating quiet space for your mind, which allows you to find meaning and, create boundaries around the tasks you do each day. Rest and self-care are essential. You cannot lead others if you are not confident in your self-care routine. Are you making the time to attend appointments to look after you? Your health is your wealth! Are you making time to disconnect from technology? Are you making time for the priorities in your life? We need to develop good habits that will transcend the January resolutions. And finally, we need to be intentional. Intentional with our actions and words. It's about operating and living in alignment with your vision, to be the best possible version of yourself for 2022. Kindness is key. Throughout the pandemic, kindness has been shifted to the forefront of our minds. A smile or a text can make such a big difference. It's the mindset of growth, abundance and gratitude. So, sit back and enjoy this episode discussing how we can Bring our Best to 2022. This week on the ‘Making It Count' podcast I thought I would re-introduce myself as well as share some insights for leaders as our attention turns to the new year. I am Julie Hyde and I believe that heart-led leaders make the world a better place for all. When we role model positive and empowering leadership we show others what is possible. When we step up and stand in our spotlight, and have the confidence to lead authentically, that is where the magic happens. And, this is where we grow. This is the driving force behind what I do, and the reason I began this Podcast. I wanted to share the insights of those who are the leadership life-blood of our community. I have learnt first hand what it takes to be an effective leader over my 21-year award-winning career. I work with leaders who want to be strong and effective role models who enable their team to shine. Leadership is now about people. This is a shift we have seen in the last 2 years. We have all been effectively forced to a period of reflection and re-set, people have emerged very differently. We have seen the shift to working from home and that it can be done well. All of these changes mean we cannot return to the ‘normal pre-pandemic' workforce. How, when, and where people want to work has changed. Leaders who have accepted this change see 55% of their work-force as high performers. Currently is a huge mis-alignment between what leaders are wanting and what their workforce is wanting in how they work. By becoming a relevant, open leader who is flexible and agile, we are more likely to retain staff in this era of ‘the great resignation'. The employment market in Australia right now is so tight. People have a new perspective and want their personal lives to reflect this change. As leaders, we have to think differently and reimagine what the workforce and workplace looks like within our organisations. So, the question becomes how can we move with these changes? Recognise that your people are the power in your business. If you are not aligned with your people, you are playing a losing game. Working with your people to find alignment is the best way to fail-safe your business for 2022. So, sit back and enjoy this episode with as our host, Julie Hyde, Makes It Count. In this episode of the ‘Making It Count' podcast, we get a one-on-one with our host, Julie Hyde. This year is flying past at a rapid speed. 2021 has been a rollercoaster for most of us with lots of disruption so, I wanted to share with you what I have been observing in the business landscape over the last 6 months. The game has changed for leaders and it is time to level up and play a smarter game. So, what do leaders need to be aware of moving forward? Fatigue is my number one observation. Although we have become better at managing the disruption, we are continuing to put out spot fires of different intensity. Teams have had to deal with lots of change including the cancelling of holidays. This has a huge impact on performance and wellbeing. In a recent survey, 87% of people believe it is the perfect time to innovate and change how things have always been done. 76% have also seen 2020 as a chance to re-prioritise. As a result, people are taking shorter, more frequent blocks of leave. This can become a problem for business. So, as leaders, we need to make a shift from ‘the employee experience' to ‘the life experience'. Supporting your employees in their personal lives more effectively enables them to not only live better lives, but also to perform at a higher level. Employers who do this, see a 21% increase in productivity. I have also seen a trend called ‘The Great Resignation', referring to the number of people switching jobs. In the US alone, April saw more than 4million people quit their jobs, which is the biggest spike on record. Why? The biggest factor is how staff are being treated by their employers. Flexibility has also become a factor. Since the events of 2020, there has been a 63% increase in the expectation that workplaces will be managing a hybrid workplace. We need to measure output vs time at the desk. When, or even where, people are completing their work has become an old mindset. Everyone is exhausted and this is one of the top three issues faced by leaders as it impacts performance. So, how can you keep your work forced energised? I believe that we need to align our priorities and needs, to create a high-performance culture. It is no longer one size fits all as people are more in tune with what is important for them. We need to be creating a culture where employees feel valued and understand how they contribute to the higher purpose of the organisation. As leaders we need to throw away the numbers and understand that your people are the power of your business. Relationships and trust are key. This is where we really need to level up. If your people don't trust you, it will impact on performance, culture and engagement. We need to understand what people want and, how to get the most out of them. Taking time for reflection is a great way to elevate our thinking as leaders and constantly re-asses the needs of our team. Reflection gives our brains an opportunity to pause amongst the chaos, to untangle observations and then create meaning. I believe that leadership is the difference that makes the difference. By walking in the shoes your employees you can drive change and creating high performing team. So, sit back and enjoy this episode with Julie Hyde as she shares how we can Make It Count as a leader.
