On this episode of the Carmudgeon Show, Jason and Derek discuss the world's best sounding cars, embracing the cacophony of cylinder count and alignment, valves per cylinder, and other factors that make each engine a musical instrument of sorts. Following a discussion that begins with the Audi RS3 and a breakdown of five cylinder aural theory, Jason and Derek land on the V10-powered Porsche Carrera GT and Lexus LFA as the best sounding cars in the world. Despite having the same cylinder count and revs capable of beyond 8500 RPM, the perception of sound as a driver is much more than meets the ear. Jason and Derek unpack this similarly concluded realization, much in part to a certain Japanese piano maker's philosophy on engine sound design. The two Carmudgeons also discuss updates on their recent purchases. Jason upgrades the wheels and tires on his new-to-him Dodge Grand Caravan camera van to take on some additional maneuverability and capability, with newly found grip to throw people and passengers violently about in back. On a similar but entirely different other end of the front wheel drive spectrum, Derek buys a carbureted and hydropneumatic  1979 Citroen CX- a car which may lack in dynamics but compensates with an oozing of character and style. In this episode of The Carmudgeon Show, amateur interior designer Jason Cammisa and living encyclopedia Derek “Hyphen” Tam-Scott go back to the basics and recall their respective foundations in their respective automotive ecosystems. Derek embarks on a trip into his past of Alfa Romeo brake jobs, buying and selling old cars, and building a prolific knowledge of cars and planes through books received since his childhood. In fact, Derek's encyclopedia became certified by age 8 when elaborating on engineering differences between a Porsche 956 and 962 to his family's local mechanic. Jason similarly recalls his beginnings watching and memorizing his parents' movements driving manual transmissions as a child. As a prize for his attentiveness at age 14, he wins an unrealized $50 bet after successfully not stalling his father's FJ60 Toyota Land Cruiser, a journey filled with risky hill-starts and rev-match downshifts. Amidst a discussion of calibrating driving styles and learning how to drive old cars properly, Jason discusses a recent drive in a friend's Ferrari Mondial T after doing some throttle tinkering. As it turns out, the more broken a car is, the better you become as a driver by circumventing the brokenness. And anyway, who's really broken- you or the car? Throughout the episode, Jason and Derek engage in a conversation about the importance of being objective in the world of automotive storytelling. Jason identifies the rewards that come with experiential curiosity and the art of purposeful ambiguity- perhaps, at the cost of being fooled by a PR department behind an Audi RS3 or a similarly FWD-feeling Dodge Neon. En este podcast motor vamos a contaros como es la gama RS de Audi. La gama de deportivos premium más vendida de España. Entramos en un mundo donde la marca de los cuatros aros habla de que además de fabricante de coches son fabricantes de emociones o de sueños. Todos los coches que hemos podido probar en el Circuito de Navarra y en las carreteras de montaña aledañas son el resultado de la experiencia de Audi en competiciones como el Mundial de Rallyes, Le Mans, la Fórmula E o, más recientemente, el Dakar. Por lo tanto Audi Sport se revela como el mejor laboratorio para los coches de serie. Además esta jornada de pruebas la hacemos cuando la gama ya está completada con el modelo de acceso, el Audi RS3. Por su puesto entre los coches probados estaba el primer eléctrico de la gama RS, que es el Audi e tron GT RS. En este podcast podrás comprobar como nos recibía a la llegada al Circuito de Los Arcos nuestro gran amigo Ignacio González, Director de Comunicación de Audi España. Además vamos a tener más protagonistas. Y es que vamos a conocer porque Audi es una de las marcas del grupo Volkswagen con menos problemas con los semi conductores. Y lo haremos entrevistando a Beatriz Sánchez Directora de Planificación de Ventas de Audi España. Conoceremos con ella como es la relación entre la fábrica y los concesionarios. Beatriz es el enlace en España. Con ella descubriremos que la marca alemana ha realizado a nivel global 385.000 entregas en el primer trimestre de 2022 con un beneficio operativo de 3,400M de euros. Por otra parte, en España y en lo que va de año el mercado ha bajado un 12 por ciento con 233K unidades vendidas frente a las 264K del 2021. Por eso en Audi no se quieren descuidar y están trabajando En innovación y mejora del modelo de negocio para el afrontar el futuro potenciando la satisfacción de producto, la deseabilidad de la marca y la imagen de marca. Veremos como la competición llega a los coches de la gama RS y es que en Audi entraron en los rallyes para demostrar como funciona la tracción quattro, en Le Mans para potenciar el sistema de propulsión diésel TDI y la Formula E para ver las posibilidades del vehículo eléctrico. Cerramos con Beatriz analizando los datos de 2021 en el que se vendieron 368 coches de la gama RS con un crecimiento del 11 por ciento con respecto al año anterior. En lo que respecta a 2022 van como líderes de este segmento que se denomina high performance vehicles. A continuación hablaremos con Sergi Pisabarro que tiene el excelente trabajo de ser el Product Manager de la gama RS. Una gama que está compuesta por 14 carrocerías y 10 modelos. O, lo que es lo mismo,la gama de Audi sport más completa de la historia En ella encontrarás coches con potencias que van desde los 400 caballos hasta los 620. Con 480 a 830 Nm de par. Todo ello gracias a motores turbo, V10 atmosférico y eléctricos. Audi RS3 tiene una carrocería ensanchada con 33mm más en, por ejemplo, el frontal. Carrocerías compacto y sedán. 10 mm más bajo que un S3. La principal novedad es el repartidor de par RS Torque splitter que distribuye el par en función de la conducción. RS3 hace 7:40 en Nurburgring récord de su categoría Primero probaremos el mítico motor 5 cilindros que llegó hace más de 20 años con el Audi RS2. Hablamos del 2,5 TFSI de 400cv y 500 NM con la caja S Tronic de 7 marchas. Un motor que sólo usa Audi y el Cupra Formentor VZ5. Esta mecánica la monta el Audi TT RS que es como un mini R8 con el que comparte volante. Además del Audi RS Q3 que fue el primer SUV prestacional de la marca. El más vendido de Audi Sport. Carrocería ensanchada en 10 mm. Después nos pusimos a los mandos del V6 biturbo 2.9 TFSI de 450cv y 600Nm de par con el cambio tiptronic de 8 marchas. Ese motor lo encontramos en el Audi RS4 Avant. 25 años de este concepto que se empezó llamando RS2. Es la quinta generación, Y también en el RS 5. Audi RS 5 y RS4 se inspiran mucho en sus hermanos mayores con carrocerías ensanchadas en 30mm. Toca otro paso hacia arriba en la escala de valore de la gama RS. Ponemos en marcha el V8 4.0 TFSI con 600cv 800 Nm de par con tecnología mild hybrid y tiptronic de 8 marchas Los ocho cilindros los montan el Audi RS 6 Avant y el Audi RS 7 Sportback comparten frontal y son los modelos que sentaron las bases de la imagen actual de Audi Sport. Carrocería ensanchada en 40mm sobre los 6 y 7 convencionales. Con el V8 también encontramos el gigante SUV Audi RS Q8 con estabilización activa de balanceo de la dirección a las cuatro ruedas y llantas de hasta 23 pulgadas, las más grandes de la marca. Ojo que ahora nos montamos en el más deportivo de todos. El Audi R8 con el 5,2 V10 FSI desde 570 caballos y 550 Nm de par. Su caja de cambios es la S tronic de 7 marchas y tracción trasera. Hay una opción con tracción cuatro que amplia su motor hasta los 620cv. El Audi R8 es la máxima expresión de la gama RS. Un icono súper deportivo. Nacido en circuito y fabricado para la carretera. Más del 50 por ciento de las piezas las comparte con el modelo de carreras. Muchas fibra de carbono. Todo el habitáculo está pensado por y para el piloto y la conducción. Cerramos las pruebas montándonos en la esperanza para que la deportividad no muera junto con el fin de los combustibles fósiles. Hablamos del Audi RS e-tron GT RS un modelo cien por cien Audi Sport. Simboliza la idea de ser el mejor deportivo premium del mundo. Sonido e-tron. Dirección a las cuatro ruedas, diferencial autoblocante, suspensión neumática, tracción quattro eléctrica... Para mover este mastodonte de casi dos toneladas y media tenemos un motor eléctrico de 440kw (598 caballos) que pueden aumentarse hasta los 646 en el momento en el que usas su ‘turbo’ boost. En cuanto al par dispone de 830 Nm. Para abastecer toda esta potencia dispone de 93 kWh en una batería de 800 voltios. Y cerraremos este podcast de coches con la mejor guinda del pastel. Immer wenn Audi ein neues Modell mit der Buchstabenkombination RS ankündigt, schauen die Freunde des sportlichen Fahrens genau hin. Somit kann sich auch der neue Audi RS 3 einer größeren Aufmerksamkeit sicher sein. Darum geht es diesmal!Wenn ein Fahrzeug von Audi die Buchstaben RS in seiner Typenbezeichnung trägt, dann ist klar, da kommt einer mit Feuer unter der Haube. Das ist definitiv beim neuen Audi RS3 nicht anders, wie wir gleich noch sehen werden. Der Wagen ist ab sofort bestellbar. Power und Drive!    Wie bereits angedeutet hat natürlich auch der neue Audi RS3 reichlich Feuer unter der Haube. Wir sprechen hier von 400 PS und 500 Nm, die der 2.5 TFSI mobilisiert. In Fahrwerten ausgedrückt ist das eine Beschleunigung von 3,8 Sekunden von null auf 100 km/h. Mit dem RS Dynamikpaket plus, das das adaptive Fahrwerk inklusive Dämpferregelung sowie die Keramikbremse umfasst, beträgt die Topspeed 290 km/h. Damit ist der Audi RS 3 aktuell in puncto Beschleunigung und Höchstgeschwindigkeit Bester seiner Klasse. Der erstmals in einem Audi verbaute Torque Splitter sorgt zudem für maximale Agilität und optimale Stabilität. Zwei zusätzliche RS-Fahrmodi lassen sowohl schnelle Rundenzeiten als auch kontrollierte Drifts auf abgesperrter Strecke zu.  Der Kraftstoffverbrauch liegt kombiniert zwischen 8,2 und 8,8 l/100 km, die CO2-Emissionen kombiniert zwischen 188 – 201 g/km.     Die Innenausstattung!Im Innenraum tragen die RS-Sportsitze zum Motorsport-Feeling bei. Der Fahrer blickt auf das Audi virtual cockpit plus, erstmals mit RS Runway Design. Hier wird die Drehzahl, grafisch ähnlich einer Flugzeug-Landebahn, in umgekehrter Richtung angezeigt – die Höchstdrehzahl im Vordergrund, die niedrigste Drehzahl im Hintergrund. Darüber hinaus integriert das Audi virtual cockpit plus Anzeigen zu G-Kräften, Rundenzeiten und der Beschleunigung von 0 100 km/h, 0-200 km/h, Viertelmeile und Achtelmeile. Das 10,1 Zoll große Touch-Display in der Mittelkonsole zeigt zudem die Temperaturen von Kühlmittel, Motor- und Getriebeöl sowie die Reifendrücke an. Die Kosten!Bekanntlich hat alles seinen Preis und das gilt auch für den jüngsten Spross von Audi.  In Deutschland kostet der RS 3 Sportback ab 60.000 Euro, die RS 3 Limousine ab 62.000 Euro. Den Fahrspaß müssen Sie nicht optional buchen, den gibt es serienmäßig! It's becoming increasingly clear that access to money isn't always the best thing. In last week's episode, Pieter explained how access to a free house and investments didn't make him great at money. Fat Wallet bestie and newly appointed spy, Wilhelm, sent us news from the front line this week. Wilhelm started sorting out his money and sharing his journey with us when he was still a student. It's been such a pleasure witnessing his pre-income journey. If you can figure out your money situation before you actually have any, how much you earn becomes irrelevant. You'll be a financial success. Sadly, the opposite is also true. I certainly learned that the hard way getting into mountains of debt in my 20s. The difference between me and Wilhelm's new colleagues is that I earned a junior journalist's salary (basically just enough to make my engineering friends feel sorry for me). The amount of damage I could do to my financial life was artificially limited by the amount of money I earned. Thank goodness. This week we talk about the dangers lurking behind the piles of money of high-income earners. If you're a low-income earner, this is good news for you too. These are the traps to watch out for before the dineros start rolling in. We are giving away a prize for the first time ever. Wilhelm writes: The government takes really good care of its young doctors. We get a good salary, but the lack of financial education means that a lot of that money simply gets wasted. I know of three doctors living in my building who purchased expensive brand new cars (Mercedes Benz A class AMG, Audi RS3) before receiving their first salary (and without receiving any help from their parents). They bought cars on credit using only a contract from the department as collateral, where it has often happened that people do not get paid the first month due to the poor admin/payroll/HR abilities of the DoH. One is paying an interest of 13% over seven years. In PE we get the opportunity to live in the doctors' quarters. It's an old apartment building in an old and rather dodgy part of town, but it is centrally located with adequate security, a brilliant sea view. We get to live here for R1100 per month. My flatmate and I pay R2200 for a three-bedroom apartment. Many of the new doctors don't want to live in the flats. They are old, the outside looks a little dilapidated and the first two floors had a history of cockroach problems (which has been sorted out). They justify their choice with, “I'm only here for two years, I'd rather live close to the beach.” They pay between R6,000 and R8,000 per month for two- or three-bedroom apartments. This often excludes water and prepaid electricity or 24-hour security. That is 300-400% more than we are paying. The last thing I noticed is the absolute ignorance towards savings and investments. Of the 52 interns who started at Livingstone hospital, I've chatted to more than 40 of them and only two of us have TFSAs. One of them even said his financial advisor told him that TFSAs are “only for poor people”. People blindly follow the advice from advisors from companies like Sanlam (which gets sold to us under the Abacon brand), Old Mutual and Liberty with very few people even knowing that 10X, Sygnia and EasyEquities exist. People have private financial advisors that have them investing in Funds with TER > 3% with many hidden costs. When they asked them about TFSAs, they said “oh yes we can talk about those when you want to get serious about saving!” From a financial point of view I'm on target to have my TFSA topped up for 2018 within four months. My emergency fund is also growing nicely, already up to three months of living expenses. I've also done a bit of research and found that you can save quite a few rand every month on insurance if you increase your excess payments when you claim. You should only do this if your emergency fund is able to cover the amount of excess that you are taking on (maybe even two or three times over so that one single claim does not consume your entire emergency fund). Mary-Ann wants to know if her emergency fund can do better. I am currently keeping my emergency cash funds of about R100k in my OST account which currently earns me 5.638% - better than a Savings account. I've been trying to figure out if it is worth putting that cash into something like the Newfunds GOVI ETF or Newfunds or Satrix ILBI ETFs. It seems to me like I could earn closer to 8% there although would need to deduct the TER from that return. I realise that the capital could fluctuate slightly, but is there significant capital risk to make it not worthwhile? It could get liquidated if required in a few days. I would probably continue to keep a portion as cash for immediate emergencies that could not wait a few days. What are your thoughts on pros and cons of this strategy? Where might I do better? I hate having money laying around not earning its keep! Milan has an answer for Georgie regarding her bond insurance. I think he's going to save many of you a lot of money. Georgie mentioned having trouble trying to reduce her credit insurance premium. There's an easy way around this issue. The new credit life regulations state the credit provider must allow the bond holder to substitute the insurance cover as long as it provides the same level of benefits. In other words Georgie can look to other credit life insurance providers for insurance on her bond and get a quotation based on the outstanding balance of the loan. Antoine (who shared their thoughts on RA penalties being like debt) has another pearl of wisdom. They say, regarding when to spend and when to save I heard a good explanation for this on “Money Management Skills”, from the Great Courses series: Think of your past, current and future self. If you borrow money, your current self is taking from your future self. When it comes to a home or study loan, you can argue that future self will also benefit from the house or degree, so it is not that bad. When you save money, you are sending some money to future self. In this instance, it doesn't make sense that your 30-or 40 year-old current self can't do anything fun while you're still young and active and your future 90-year-old self lies in bed with millions in the bank. I recently bought a new bike. I am able to buy a very fancy bike cash, but at a certain price the marginal gains are not worth the money you spend at my level of cycling. Instead of spending thousands extra on a bike that's a bit lighter, I decided to get a good enough bike and shoot some of that cash to my future 70-year-old self, so that he can use that cash to go on a nice overseas trip. Last week Keith Mclachlan took issue with ETFs on Twitter. We gave him an opportunity to share his views on our website. Paul reckons he hit the nail on the head: Because we all wish to improve our knowledge and understanding of investments we should welcome Keith's view. I just don't see any misunderstanding; He uses ETFs when/if he doesn't know/understand a market and doesn't have the time to study/follow it. That's what we all do. That's the reason ETFs exist.   Glad to see my investment strategy mirrors his. Denzel just discovered fees. He's not happy. He has questions. I'm sorry to get back onto RAs again but the fees these f*ckers have been charging me is absurd. Now I know why my FA drives the car he does!! I have two RAs: One is with 10X (very happy, even though returns to date are average, market not great) The other is with Liberty through a FA. They invest in Allan Gray and Coronation. Subtract the current milage from 150,000 (or whatever you suspect the Death Mileage is for a car). Divide your expected annual milage into the remaining milage for number years until you suspect the car might have no real economic value. Divide that number of years into the price.
