Kim Charlson will join us for a few minutes on our show to remind us about the fourth annual Audio Description Gala! It is an amazing event and we look forward to hearing all about the latest iteration of an important opportunity to celebrate audio description and those who create it. On Election day, November 5, which is also Guy Fawkes day in the UK, Tuesday Topics will take to the air from 7 to 9 PM on November 5. Fittingly, we think, Tuesday Topics will concentrate on the election. We felt it would be good for us to be available for folks to tell us about their voting experiences this cycle. We will also explore how this election may be different from those in the past. Obviously, we will not be conducting a partisan political exercise. If we were going to do that we would have done it much sooner! We know that many of you will be glued to your media for the results. Perhaps we will talk about how they are functioning but it will be pretty early for us to look at their performance. I have not heard either Presidential candidate make meaningful statements about disabled voters. What does this tell us? Voters with disabilities represent more than 20 percent of the electorate. If there are significant disability elements that we have missed, I hope you will tell us about them! Have you played a role in campaigns this year? Would you tell us about what you have done? It is certainly possible that the Tuesday Topics Team will be talking among ourselves a lot but I hope not! Last time our election show had interesting input from many people. We hope this one will be exciting, informative and relevant.

CAUDES stands for Certified Audio Description Specialist. This week on Outlook we're speaking with Lolly Lijewski and Kim Charlson about recently released draft certification guidelines and criteria open for public comments until March 31st. Kim is Chair of the Academy for Certification of Visual Rehabilitation & Education Professionals/Subject Matter Experts Committee and Lolly and co-host Kerry met originally when taking some AD training and have since gone on to form a group of blind and sighted members who practice the art of crafting audio description together because we believe the collective collaborative team makes for a more authentic and representational finished product. Now we have some thoughts and some questions about these proposed and drafted certification guidelines and Kim is with us to lay it all out. Everyone involved only wants the best quality product in the end for blind consumers and we're happy to have this discussion as we look ahead to next steps in audio description's evolution. You can download and read the CAUDES Draft Certification Criteria by clicking this link: https://www.acvrep.org/resource/docs/DRAFT%20Certified%20Audio%20Description%20Specialist%20certification%20criteria%201-2024.docx Please consider sending any questions or comments on the criteria to comments@acvrep.org (include CAUDES in the subject line) If you'd like the document sent directly to your inbox, you can email Kim at kimcharlson@acb.org And find the Audio Description Project here: https://adp.acb.org

Many of you may remember a historic resolution presented by Blind LGBT Pride International (BPI) this past Summer to the Resolutions Committee and to the Advocacy Team of the American Council of the Blind. Drafted in a collaboration between BPI and Kim Charlson and Paul Edwards, this resolution gained immediate action thanks to the tireless efforts of BPI LifeTime Member, Terry Gorman. BPI’s original resolution consisted on urging National Library Services (NLS) to include an LGBTQ category. We were able to back up our ask by offering a compilation of all LGBTQ titles already available on BARD. This compilation was the result of the continuous and meticulous work of none other than Terry Gorman. Terry has a passion for learning through reading, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of literature in general. He decided to undertake the task of creating a catalog of all LGBTQ-related titles available through NLS. When he presented this beautifully compiled bibliography to BPI, we were sure we needed to complement Terry’s laborious toil, and decided to move forth with our resolution. Even though we did not have an in-person General Session this year, BPI promoted this resolution together with Terry’s bibliography at different ACB-Convention workshops where NLS representatives were present. To our surprise, and thanks to Terry’s already-completed bibliography, NLS acted upon our ask in a matter of days! BPI then worked with ACB’s Resolution Committee to adjust our resolution, now thanking NLS for the incorporation of an LGBTQ category, and requesting the distinction of three LGBTQ categories- Fiction, non-fiction, and young adult. Tonight, we are honored and humbled to talk to Terry Gorman. He will tell us about his passion for Braille and literature. He will share his personal journey with us. He will also tell us what prompted him to undertake this project that has become a milestone enriching the life of those of us who are part of the intersectionality of being blind/visually impaired and LGBTQ. Terry has also been working on other projects that include platforms like Bookshare, and he will share this and other impactful initiatives he is currently leading. Be a part of Pride Connection!
