With the coldest season of the year upon us, Azim Ahmed hears how faith groups across Wales are helping homeless people through the hardest winter months. It's estimated that nearly 3000 people each year sleep rough in Wales, but being homeless also includes people who are living in temporary hostels or night shelters, or lodging temporarily with family or friends. Nearly 10, 000 households in Wales are classified as at risk of being pushed into homelessness due to poverty and insecure housing. Across Wales people of faith do what they can to alleviate the hardship of living without a home, and today we'll meet some of these individuals and hear about the personal efforts they make. We begin at the Victoria Fish Bar in North Cardiff where one Muslim family, Mohammad and Jawad Nazakat, head up an initiative to give out free fish and chips to the homeless each Christmas. In Wrexham Housing Justice Cymru's Citadel project helps foster community for the people they support over the Christmas period. They work in collaboration with Hope Street Church, who gather together volunteers to pack ‘Bags of Kindness' for those in need at Christmas. It's part of a national initiative, ‘Love Christmas' encouraging organisations to spread kindness during the festive period. We visit the Hare Krishna ‘Atma Café' in central Cardiff which gives out free vegan food to those in need. We hear from Father Dean Atkins and Salvation Army chaplain John Stark who have organised a memorial service at St. Mary's Butetown to remember those who have died homeless. The service is accompanied by the ‘Choir with No Name', a choir which builds joyful singing communities with people impacted by homelessness and marginalisation.

On the evening of October 6, 1898, forty-eight-year-old George Saxton, brother of First Lady Ida McKinley, was riding his bike to the home of his lady friend Eva Althouse when an assailant dressed in black emerged from the shadows and fired two shots. Wounded, George crawled towards Eva's house and had just reached the front steps when the shooter approached and fired two more shots, killing him almost instantly.Within hours of Saxton's death, his former mistress, Anna George, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. For more than a decade, Saxton and George had been carrying on a scandalous relationship that began as an illicit affair until Saxton successfully convinced George to divorce her husband, supposedly with promises to marry her. However, once she was a single woman again, Saxton's enthusiasm for marriage had cooled and over time his interest in Anna waned. Anna George's sensational arrest and trial dominated headlines for months and, as Saxton was extremely unpopular, many people sympathized with the accused woman and even reveled in Saxton's death. After an intense and closely watched three-week trial, Anna George was acquitted of the murder and soon after she faded out of the spotlight, leaving the murder of George Saxton officially unsolved to this day.Thank you to the glorious David White, of the Bring Me The Axe Podcast, for research!ReferencesAkron Beacon Journal. 1906. John, AKA Mac The Movieguy, has a degree in Cinema Studies and has been critiquing movies since the 90s and before he went blind - his YouTube channel has over 1000 videos all about movies and audio description in film. This week on Outlook we're speaking with John Stark and getting his movie critic expertise on audio description (AD) in film, including how watching a movie with sighted people is made better by a more accessible movie going experience for all. John, as someone who was sighted and then went blind, is able to offer his perspective from both sides of the issue. Speaking of multiple sides of things, John shares about his placement and history working at the cinema (as most movie theatre employees unfortunately know very little about AD), more about his first experiences and memories learning what audio description is and how it works, and the struggle to be taken seriously as a film critic who's blind, but his specialty focusing on AD only makes his videos all the more well rounded and interesting. What does John look for in a film as far as good quality audio description goes? He answers this question and much more, along with giving examples of shows and films he's found with it because he's done the work and knows the lay of the land, putting his thoughts on his Mac The Movieguy Youtube Channel. Plus, he shares his pics for the best paired films with their AD of 2023. We discuss audio description all the time on this show, as a way of getting listeners familiar with what it is and why it's important. What the stories of the Crown Jewels tell us about exploitation and the quest for reparations

Don’t Call Me Resilient

Although King Charles will have a low-key ceremony on his coronation day this May 6, the Crown Jewels will still figure prominently. An exploration of the story of the jewels tells a tale of brutal exploitation, rape and the original looting. Join us on Don't Call Me Resilient to follow the jewels.  Much of what was called the British Empire was built from stolen riches - globally - and also from India. In fact, India was such an abundant contributor to the Crown that at the time of its occupation of South Asia, Britain called India the Jewel in its Crown.  India was called this because of its location — easy access to the silk route, but mostly because of its vast human and natural resources: things like cotton, and tea and of course its abundance of jewels.Literally, the brightest jewel in Britain's Crown is the Koh-i-Noor diamond.  It is considered one of the world's largest and most valued diamonds and it usually sits on top of the Crown of Queen Mary.It has a controversial history  — namely that it was “surrendered” to the British by an Indian 10-year-old boy whose mother had been imprisoned and whose father had recently died. It's likely for that reason, that it won't be on display at the coronation. But plenty of other jewels will be part of the ceremony. There is the five-pound gold St. Edward's Crown that Charles will be officially crowned with, the Sovereign's Sceptre, which has the Great Star of Africa diamond in it and the Imperial State Crown, which is set with almost 3,000 diamonds - including another Star of Africa.Joining me to explore the history and meaning behind these jewels is Annie St. John-Stark, assistant professor of British history at Thompson Rivers University. Also here today is: Sharanjit Kaur Sandhra, sessional instructor of history at both the University of the Fraser Valley and the University of British Columbia. Her recently completed PhD reimagines museums as spaces of belonging.  Both historians on today's episode believe change is possible with a redress: of how the histories of the Crown Jewels are told and also how wealth is redistributed.  And actually, if recent polls are to be believed, although many will be out celebrating (any excuse for a party, right?) the pomp of the coronation along with its display of the Crown Jewels does not reflect the attitudes of modern Britain. The most recent poll available indicates only 32 per cent of Britons believe the Empire is something to be proud of  — that is down almost 25 per cent from a 2014 poll. That means, attitudes are changing quickly.  Will the Royal Family catch up?

In the previous episode [The Donner Party Part 1] Dawn and her guest, Andy Kraft climbed aboard with The Donner Party wagon-train as they begin their ill-fated journey West. We met some of the most prominent individuals including George Donner - after whom the sad collective is named. Also James Reed, who tragically murdered his friend, John Snyder and was subsequently banished. He left, promising his wife and children he would do everything he could to be reunited  and save them.00:05:30 - When we left off, The Donner Party had just reunited with the hero, C.T. Stanton - a single, childless man who had ridden ahead of the party months earlier to get help and supplies. His return provided much needed food and comfort, but it proved to be yet another nail in the coffin as it delayed their attempt to cross the summit before a huge snow storm. 00:11:07 - After several attempts to cross the summit with the mules, the Party realizes that they simply cannot make the passing the snow. Instead, they will be slaughtered in the morning, the meat prepared - and then they're all going out on foot before the snow comes... but that very night a snow storm begins that lasts 8 days. The animals are dead and lost beneath the snow and everyone is suddenly oh-so-much more desperate. They're divided into two camps about seven miles apart from one another. Sixty are at Truckee Lake - nine men over eighteen, twelve women, and twenty-nine were children, six of whom were toddlers or younger. The other camp, at Alder Creek, has twenty-one people: six men, three women, and twelve children in all. 00:17:38 - Realizing that the situation was going to lead to inevitable starvation, they decided that the strongest individuals among them would make snowshoes, and attempt to walk to Sutter's Fort in California. If they could make it, they would raise the alarm and return with help. Some call them "The Snowshoe Party", others "The Forlorn Hope". There were fifteen of them: five women, nine men and one twelve-year old boy.  00:29:52 - It has been mutually determined among the members of The Forlorn Hope that starvation was imminent and that 'should one of them die, the others might live.' They were the first among The Donner Party to resort to cannibalism when: "“The men finally mustered up the courage to approach the dead”.00:37:07 - BREAK - Check out the podcast Story Worthy by Christine Blackburn. 00:38:20 - The First Relief Party arrives at Donner Lake on February 1847. It's bad. Of the sixty-five people who were left there when The Forlorn Hope left (two months prior), thirteen people have died, leaving about thirty survivors. They have not *apparently* started eating each other yet. Twenty-one leave with the rescuers: six adults, six children under ten-years-old, nine children who are ten-fourteen-years-old.They have a hell of a trek to safety and three die on the way back. One adult (John Denton), Ada Keseberg (3), William Hook (12, fatally gorges himself when they finally get to food.0042:30 - Incredibly James Reed meets the First Relief Party as they're returning and not only reunites with his wife, but provides them much-needed supplies after their caches were destroyed. He then continues back down to Donner Lake only to discover a scene significantly more disastrous than when last they were contacted. The Second Relief takes with them seventeen people: three adults, two teenagers, and twelve children between nine and one-year-olds. On the way back, three people die, two five-year-old children and a forty-year-old woman. Most of the children are carried out by one guy - John Stark. 01:02:14 -After two more relief parties, the last group to go to Donner lake, are less of a relief, than a 'retrieve'.  They arrive on April 10th - It had been a month since the 3rd Relief had left. The first thing they see - there are bodies and body parts EVERYWHERE: Skulls, legs, fragments. Mrs. Murphy is lying there with a leg sawed off and the saw still lying next to her. Mrs. Donner is dead and partly devoured in Keseberg's Cabin, but he is gone and they see a fresh set of tracks leading to the Donner Cabin. Soon, Keseberg is found walking back carrying much of the Donner's money. 01:06:06 - Here is the final head-count (so to speak) of the survivors and victims of the Party: Of the 87 who took the notorious Cut-off, about 42 died. What do you think of those odds?---HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Next new episode: February 1st, 2023**We are moving. Tracy Newman came to comedy writing by being a founder of a Los Angeles improvisational organization called The Groundlings. It was located on the famous Melrose Avenue, and it was during the heyday in the 1960's for these kind of entertainment venues. The Groundlings, which still operates today, became a training ground where aspiring actors could learn how to create jokes and how to respond to a live audience when creating comedy. Many members of the group went on to have stellar careers like Tracy and her younger Sister, Lorraine, who became part of Saturday Night Live. Incredibly, Tracy's television career as a sitcom Writer began on the CHEERS program at the time when it was, and still is, one of the most popular programs for T. V. ever created. From there she continued joining with her partner John Stark, what is called the Writers' Rooms, with many of the most famous television sitcoms such as the Drew Carey Show and The Nanny. She won an Emmy with other Writers, the highest award in Television in the U. S., for the script for the ELLEN Show where Ellen announced to the world that she was a Lesbian. At the time, that was a risky and radical career decision for a popular entertainer. In this episode, Tracy takes us into the world of the typical Writers' Room of a sitcom comedy, a place she left years ago to return to songwriting and singing. She gives us an insight into the history of how television comedy was made and evolved. To hear her music, see her videos and purchase CDs, go to the website, www.tracynewman.com

Over a span of decades, Tracy Newman has used her creativity in folk song writing and singing, and in her pioneering work as a comedy writer for live performances and television audiences.  The origins of much of the comedy we enjoy today in the United States, came from a blossoming of talent that arrived on the scene 50 years ago now.  One of the places that became a hotbed of developing future comedic stars was a place called the GROUNDLINGS IMPROV THEATRE in Los Angeles, California, and Tracy was a founding member.   It was there, like a farm team in sports, that future Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast members honed their talent and their performance styles in front of an audience.  The likes of Melissa McCarthy, Will Farrell, Kristen Wiig, Phil Hartman and Lorraine Newman, to name a few, were plucked from the West Coast to arrive on the New York TV stage of SNL.   Tracy Newman takes us down the path from her folksinging days, to her trail of television sitcom writing with her partner John Stark, for popular shows like, Cheers, The Drew Carey Show, and her Emmy Award for the Ellen episode where Ellen announces to the world that she is Gay.  After leaving television writing she returned to song writing and has produced CDs with her band TRACY NEWMAN AND THE REINFORCEMENTS.  She also has created CDs for kids through her company, RUN ALONG HOME.  To hear her music, see her videos and purchase CDs, go to the website, www.tracynewman.com You can watch her Youtube videos and learn more about Tracy Newman and her career in entertainment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew6DS2bXYmk

Who was Irene Morgan Kirkaldy? John Stark? Frances Perkins? Or, more famously, Levi Strauss? This episode of The American Tapestry Project explores yet another new thread in the stories of how Americans weave the common objects of their love into the fabric of their national story by introducing you to some Unsung American Heroes. The Cambridge Dictionary defines unsung as “not noticed or praised for hard work, courage or great achievements”. An unsung hero does great deeds but receives little or no recognition for them. We'll begin correcting that by telling you their story and the contribution they made to America's tapestry of stories from Fred Harvey to Elizabeth Peratrovich, from Sergey Brin to Lydia Maria Child. While we're at it, we'll also answer listener questions about some books of interest behind the series: Jill Lepore's The Case for the Nation, Joseph Ellis' His Excellency and John Lewis Gaddis' The Landscape of History.

Few New Hampshire citizen's played a more unique and controversial role in the pre-revolutionary period of what would come to be The United States of America than Robert Rogers. Robert Rogers, or Rodgers (7 November 1731 – 18 May 1795), was a New Hampshire resident and colonial frontiersman. Born in Methuen, Mass, his family moved north to what is now New Hampshire settling in a town Roger's refers to in his writings as Mountalona and today encompassing the towns of Dunbarton and Bow. His service to the people of New England, particularly in the war known in the colonies as the French & Indian War (in Europe the Seven Years War) is well documented and a study in the fame and controversy that surrounded this remarkable man. At only 14 years of age he became a member of the militia in King George's War (1744–1748). Many military historians attribute the seeds of the American Revolution's success to the ideology, tactics and strategies of the famed Roger's Rangers, led forcefully and adeptly by Rogers. Indeed, one of his favored rangers was his second in command John Stark who would later set aside his "Ranger temperament" to become a General in the Colonial Army and utter the famed phrase "Live Free or Die" in the heat of battle.

We’ve got lots for you this week. Fishermen clash with offshore wind developers, once-depleted bluefin tuna experience a resurgence, and 3D printing helps bring manufacturing back to Massachusetts. Meanwhile, off-road vehicles bring money and grumbles to White Mountain towns. Plus, the fascinating story of when “Live Free or Die” bumped heads with the First Amendment — and why it could prove relevant in an upcoming Supreme Court case.  Last, an appreciation of the sticky sweet snack of many a New England childhood. ATVs have become a frequent sight in New Hampshire’s Coos county. Photo by Chris Jensen for NHPR Up and Down the Coast The bluefin tuna can reach lengths of almost 10 feet. They can swim from the Bahamas to Norway in 54 days. Photo credit: NOAA Fishermen say it’s been decades since they’ve been able to catch so many Atlantic bluefin tuna so fast. Once severely depleted, populations of the prized sushi fish appear to be rebuilding. Now the industry and some scientists say the international commission that regulates the fishery can allow a much bigger catch. But some conservation groups disagree. From Portland, Maine Public Radio’s Fred Bever reports. Crew members sort through scallops and discard bycatch on a fishing boat in the Atlantic 14 miles from Long Island’s Montauk Point. Photo by Jon Kalish for NENC On the easternmost tip of Long Island, Montauk is the largest commercial fishing port in New York State. The nation’s first offshore wind farm is only a few miles away, off of Block Island, and many more such wind farms are in the works along the eastern seaboard. These plans have Montauk fisherman worried about the impact on their livelihoods. Independent producer Jon Kalish reports. Mike Twombly uses a sophisticated tool to precisely measure the diameter of a part that has been recently fabricated at Custom Machine Group in Woburn, Mass. Read and listen to more from WBUR’s Future of Work series. Living Free Three year-old Everly Lavertu enjoys riding ATV trails with her parents. But leading health and safety groups say young children should not be riding in ATVs. Photo by Casey McDermott for NHPR These days in New Hampshire's North Country, it's not unusual to see caravans of all-terrain vehicles — or ATVs — all over. This region of the state has long been defined by the loss of its paper mill industry and high unemployment rate. But the surge in ATVs may be changing the North Country's image. While some see promise in this growing group of tourists, others worry that the region might be losing something else along the way. Others raise safety concerns. Reporters Casey McDermott and Todd Bookman looked into the  ATV phenomenon in a three-part series for New Hampshire Public Radio. Casey McDermott joins us to talk about what they learned. Below: take a virtual ride on an ATV trail in New Hampshire’s Jericho Mountain State Park. The adventurous off-road spirit is certainly in step with New Hampshire's celebrated motto: “Live Free or Die.” Image via Plateshack.com The slogan, taken from a 1809 toast given by Granite State Revolutionary War general John Stark, has been a part of the New Hampshire license plate since 1971. But not long after it became standard, a man made the case that the requirement to display the motto on his car violated his freedoms. And his case made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Next month, the court will hear arguments in a controversial free speech case out of Colorado, where a baker refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The baker's attorneys say they're resting their arguments on a precedent set during the decades-old legal battle over “Live Free or Die.” NHPR's Lauren Chooljian  tells the story of one determined New Hampshire couple, and how their battle with state's famous motto continues to have an impact.
