Episode 410."Eye In The Sky" Movie Composer: Paul Hepker.Paul Hepker is a talented composer whose "Eye In The Sky" remains one of my most favorite movie scores. It is also Alan Rickman's last movie. His other credits include Rendition, Tsotsi and so many more.Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, Paul Hepker trained as a concert pianist under Adolphe Hallis. He worked as a Musical Director at the National Theatres in Pretoria and Cape Town (The Rocky Horror Show, Joseph) and has performed or recorded with a number of prominent South African and international artists such as Shirley Bassey, Miriam Makeba, Ice Cube and Vusi Mahlasela. He wrote the voter education theme “Make Your Mark” for the first democratic elections in South Africa, which gave birth to a National TV gameshow of the same name. In the mid-1990's he toured the world as a member of Grammy-nominated band Johnny Clegg and Savuka (Juluka) before moving to Los Angeles in 1997 to pursue a career in composing for stage and screen.A long-time member of acclaimed Los Angeles theatre company Circle X, Hepker garnered an Ovation Award, two LA Weekly Awards, and numerous nominations for his work as composer or Musical Director on productions such as Grendel, Laura Comstock's Bag-Punching Dog, and Romeo & Juliet: Antebellum, New Orleans, 1839.In 1999 Hepker was a Finalist in the inaugural John Lennon Songwriting Competition and has had songs featured in, and included on the soundtracks for Eye In The Sky, Tsotsi, Permanent Midnight, Soul Survivor, The Bird Can't Fly and Into The Light.Paul's latest project is Official Secrets (Starring Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Matt Smith) – his fourth collaboration with director Gavin Hood. Paul also co-composed the music for Tsotsi (which won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film), Eye In The Sky (starring Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman) and Rendition (starring Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep). Along with fellow South African composer Mark Kilian, Paul scored The Bird Can't Fly (starring Barbara Hershey). His score for Into the Light – a documentary exploring the AIDS crisis in Tanzania, featured Kenyan singer Ayub Ogada.Paul was series composer on numerous Discovery, History and National Geographic Channel series, including Deadliest Catch, IRT Deadliest Roads,  Crash Files, Impact, America's Deadliest Season, Into the Firestorm, Raw Nature, Iditarod, Herrings – all for Original Productions – and Shark Taggers (NBC).Paul returned to South Africa in mid-2012, where he has been involved in music production (Ard Matthews), writing music for commercials (Nedbank Private Wealth, OUTSurance, Spar, Nissan, Serengeti Beer)  and film-scoring: he recently composed the music for Kite (starring Samuel L. Jackson) and Shepherds and Butchers (directed by Oliver Shmitz and starring Steve Coogan) both for visionary South African producer Anant Singh.Welcome the awesome, Paul Hepker.Monday Morning Critic: Instagram, TiKTok, YouTube and Facebook.www.imdb.com/title/tt12597724/www.mmcpodcast.com

For the almost 40 years we've been producing Hearts of Space, our mission has been to bring you "Ambient, Space, and Contemplative music from around the world and across the centuries." We've done it in dozens of countries and musical genres. Yet despite its rich and influential musical culture, we've only managed to create a handful of programs of the music of Africa. And within Africa, the music of West Africa and its signature instrument, the 22-string harp/lute called the kora—stands out for its melodic beauty and charm. On this transmission of Hearts of Space from guest producer DAVID J. EGAN, we focus on the gentle joy of West African music and the kora, on a program called 'WEST AFRICAN SPIRITS.' Music is by RODERICK McLEOD & VINOD PRASANNA, AYUB OGADA, SONA JOBARTEH, STEPHAN MICUS, SEBATIERRA, ABLAYE CISSOKO & VOLKER GOETZE, and DEREK GRIPPER. I come to the mountains, forests and streams, To connect with my heart and soul. Sitting in silence under the Sun, I know all that I need to know. There's always so much more to say! I'm trying to keep these short because I know you are busy, and I got feedback after that 1/2 hour one that it was just too long! So this week, I'm sorry to not have even mentioned Black Moon Lilith (seen in the thumbnail and opening) conjuncting the Sun at the 27th degree of Gemini. The Sabian symbol for that degree is: "A gypsy emerging from the forest wherein her tribe is encamped." Feel into that one! This reminds me that I barely touched on depression but know that it is almost palpable in the air, though many seek to ignore it. Both Mars conjunct Chiron and Venus/nodes square Saturn have to do with feeling, remembering, and healing deep emotional wounds from this life and others. Let's be clear, if you're not feeling some sorrow and grief these days, you are out of touch with your humanity! Yet, as Shakespeare said: "Parting is but sweet sorrow." Sitting in sadness can bring us down (or bring feelings up, whichever way you want to look at it) into deeper layers of our soul nature that hold many truths and bring tremendous self-knowledge. Let's remember that Aries/Mars rules both action and reaction. Chiron will bring to the surface times in the past when we have suffered as a result of "overacting," possibly incurring damage on others or Gaia due to impulsive, indiscriminate, unconscious willfulness. Conversely, this conjunction may bring up memories when our "overreacting" brought blame, shame, or pain to others. And let's not forget the opposite as that is what Chiron's wounds most often signify, UNDER acting, or failure to act or react when it was necessary, proper, and needed and we or others experienced pain as a result. The overdoing or underdoing symbolized by Chiron's placement in your birth chart and in transit is a result of what I will call "soul fragmentation," an aspect of yourself that has been separated from your soul identity from any number of past experiences and is therefore not connected, representing, or in alignment with your true nature. This week (and when Jupiter comes to Chiron next year) is a perfect time for soul retrieval wherein you call back these fragmented portions of your psyche. Have compassion for and forgive yourself (and others you may have blamed), and relax, exhale, and feel the relief of being reunited. Of course, a natural selection for Taurus is Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence!" We might add that to the expanding Pele Report Playlist on Spotify too. http://bit.ly/pele-soundtrack However, I did get goosebumps listening to this version of Amazing Grace: https://youtu.be/HsCp5LG_zNE And I also loved this version of Kothbiro, Ayub Ogada: https://youtu.be/L48PCisRZ7s Lastly, I share links and other relevant posts on our uncensored Telegram channel. The late Ayub Ogada was regarded as one of the greatest Kenyan artists of all time. He was born in 1956 in Mombassa as Job Seda, a descendant of the proud Luo people of western Kenya. At six, his parents took him to Chicago, where his father studied medicine. Ayub recalls meeting Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), and experiencing the aftermath of American segregation, even as his parents toured college campuses performing Luo music at a time when the term 'world music' was unknown in commercial circles. Recorded at the African Heritage House outside Nairobi. Two generations of the Luo tribe perform the music of their people. Ayub Ogada has reached an international market as a world musician but here he returns to his acoustic roots and the ancient nyatiti lyre. This is the instrument of the Luo people and he has evolved a softer, gentler sound' to which he adds his distinctive soft sweet voice. In contrast, The Sega Sega Band, play Benga music, the style that is at the root of Kenyan pop music from the 60s to the present day. The melodies and rhythms are shaped by the tuning of the nyatiti harp and orutu, (a single string fiddle) but they have modernised the music to create uptempo dance music and transferred the musical lines to the modern guitar.
