Show #747 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 13th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. BYTON M-BYTE PRODUCTION BEGINS IN CHINA "production for the all-electric and terribly pretty Byton M-Byte crossover has officially begun. And as promised — Byton has kept the massive, 48″ infotainment display!" writes Jo at CleanTechnica: "the Byton M-Byte will be available with two powertrain options, with those being a single-motor rear-drive version with about 270 HP and a range of about 300 miles (483 km) as the first, and a second four-wheel drive dual motor version with 400 HP and a little less range — about 265 miles (426 km)." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/13/byton-m-byte-production-begins-in-china-keeps-the-48-big-screen/ WM MOTOR’S ALL-NEW EX5-Z EARLY DEPOSITS NOW OPEN WM Motor has officially begun taking early deposits for its all-new EX5-Z. Until April 24, customers need only place a ¥66 refundable deposit online to secure their new vehicle. Early reservation holders can install WM Motor’s Ultraviolet C (UVC) purifier upon delivery at no extra cost. The UVC is an innovative component of WM Motor’s CleanPro purification system that helps to remove potentially harmful bacteria and microbes in the cabin. WM Motor’s ‘Living Pilot’ makes up the vehicle’s touchless active safety systems. Powered by a full suite of Level 2 advanced driver assistance functions, co-developed with Bosch, Living Pilot deploys an array of cameras and radars, alerting the driver to road hazards and undertaking seamless control functions such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, autonomous parking and emergency braking. CAR BOOM BEGINS IN CHINA, WITH A WAVE OF NEW ELECTRIC CARS ABOUT TO ROLL OUT "With lockdowns lifting in China, car buyers are coming back in droves. Ipsos, a marketing research firm, surveyed first-time car buyers in March. The survey revealed that 41% of those new buyers have a preference for EVs. (About half of respondents wanted AC with a germ filter and an interior with antibacterial materials.)" writes Electrek: "The SAIC Volkswagen plant in Changsha resumed operations last week and will begin producing VW ID electric cars. The GM joint venture with Chinese automakers, which just unveiled its new Baojun electric vehicle, launched a no-questions-asked return policy within 30 days." PLUG-IN CAR SALES IN THE NETHERLANDS INCREASED IN MARCH 2020 "Passenger car sales in the Netherlands went down by 25% in March, but that's not the case for plug-ins, which still managed to note some gains, despite the challenging situation." reports InsideEVs:"The total number of new passenger plug-in car registrations amounted to 5,102 at a year-over-year growth of 8%. More importantly, the plug-in share in the market expanded to 17%, and 14% were all-electric cars alone. Tesla Model 3 registrations amounted to 1,339 (the best result for the month) - enough to regain first place in the year-to-date rank, with 1,626 units total. It's pretty funny that in early 2020 we see Model 3 fighting for the win with... Opel Ampera-e (the European version of the Chevrolet Bolt EV). Opel is still selling a lot of Ampera-e under significant discounts to achieve its emission targets - 320 additional new registrations in March translated into 1,279 YTD and second place overall. Impressive." https://insideevs.com/news/408827/plugin-car-sales-netherlands-march-2020/ TESLA GIGAFACTORY SHANGHAI RAPID EXPANSION Tesla GIga Shanghai went from groundbreaking to car production in 365 days, it was a year to the day to open the factory. But now the media attention seems less focused on the automakers infrastructure in China, and instead writing about the Long Range and Performance models soon to be made domestically, I wanted to look at the factory some more. Plenty of drone videos are still making their way online and the latest one show foundations are in for a large scale expansion. Indeed the massive car production facility should only be thought on as stage one. In fact this phase looks to my eye to be twice the size of the existing buildings. This is going to double production capability with Model Y production line going in. The Model 3 and Model Y could be sharing production facilities for some parts. Given how many Model Y they could make from here, it coudl double global Model Y produciton. And the time of thise, I wonder if China could make more Model Y than Fremont. Talking of Phase 1, they're also extending the two current buildings, possible joining them up. TESLA MODEL Y WIRING EFFICIENCIES QUESTIONED IN LATEST MUNRO TEARDOWN "Sandy Munro took the opportunity to show the Tesla Model Y’s new wiring structure, however, the Detroit automotive veteran noted to be “kind of disappointed” in some of its design." says Teslarati: "In July 2019, Tesla published a patent that aimed to improve the wiring, power, and communications systems for its vehicles by reducing the amount of wires found within a car. Tesla maintained it would be decreased from 1.5 kilometers of wire in the Model 3 to just 100 meters in the Model Y. Munro claimed he did not see less wiring, only a more organized wiring architecture. The new design is still an improvement from the Model 3." He says "the wires are just as long". But, i would caution on saying things like that because he hasn't taken the wiring loom out and measured it for length and weight. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-shorter-wiring-efficiency-teardown-review/ ELON MUSK EXPLAINS WHY TESLA'S MODEL 3 HAS AN IN-CABIN CAMERA "Elon Musk has confirmed that the camera is there to support Tesla’s eventual robo-taxi plans. Since you won’t be in the car yourself when it’s picking up rides, the camera will provide video evidence if passengers trash the interior." writes Engadget: "the company recently applied for a patent on using the camera to recognize occupants and apply settings (such as seat position or climate controls) when they’re inside. For now, though, the in-cabin camera is more a symbol of Tesla’s lofty, as yet unfulfilled dreams of putting fully self-driving cars on the road." https://www.engadget.com/tesla-model-3-cabin-camera-explained-222017515.html 2020 BENTLEY BENTAYGA HYBRID IS LESS EFFICIENT ON THE HIGHWAY THAN V8 VERSION "Official EPA fuel-economy ratings are out for the 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid, the luxury brand’s first electrified offering. the plug-in performs worse on the highway than its V8-powered combustion sibling. The EPA rated the Bentayga Hybrid as delivering 18 miles in all-electric range. It’s rated at 17 mpg city and 21 on the highway. By contrast, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 version of the luxury crossover offers just 17 mpg combined, yet it delivers 23 mpg on the highway." When the car was revealed at Geneva wasn't it supposed to have 31 miles of EV range? QUESTION OF THE WEEK How can the EV industry help people get into driving electric cars as soon as this is all over? Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. Welcome to our newest member of the Patreon gang it’s a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CRAIG ROGERS who just went from $5 to $10. UPDATE ON MODEL 3 IN EUROPE AND CHINA Walter MacVane @EcoHeliGuy "Glovis Cosmos is entering the port of Zeebrugge. Now the question remains, 3000, or more Teslas on this ship? Welcome to Europe" @teslastars "While the #GlovisCosmos is in Zeebrugge unloading its cargo of Model 3, the #GrandAurora is showing up in the Açores. Arrival is scheduled for Friday 15th in the evening" WITRICITY ACQUIRES QUALCOMM HALO "WiTricity, a company that specializes in contactless EV charging, has acquired Qualcomm's rival wireless charging tech. The two are keeping quiet about the financial details, though they did reveal that Qualcomm will become a minority WiTricity shareholder as a result of the transaction. " reports Engadget for our first story today: "Ultimately, it gives WiTricity access to more than 1,500 new wireless battery charging patents and patent applications, which could see its contactless charging system become the EV industry standard. An MIT spinoff, WiTricity's system relies on a floor pad that radiates a magnetic field to refuel parked EVs. In 2016, the company announced a prototype in partnership with GM that could be deployed in public parking spaces and garages, offering power at both 7.7 kW and 11 kW. Qualcomm bought its "Halo" tech from the University of Auckland in 2011 as part of a "multi-million dollar" deal. It currently forms the backbone of its dynamic electric vehicle charging (DEVC) test track." In the comments Peterf says: "This is so dumb. You can accept the efficiency loss with a smartphone since it's such little energy but to charge a car with the reduced efficiency causes a lot of energy waste." https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/11/witricity-qualcomm-halo-ev-wireless-charging/ SPY SHOTS #1 - VW I.D. NEO / I.D. ONE We're a bit over run today with spy shots of future EV's in cold weather testing. And that's a nice problem to have because when cars are at that stage, they're not too far away from being outside your house. Volkswagen I.D. Neo - AutoExpress say: "Volkswagen will launch the I.D. (codenamed ‘Neo’ within the company) with a range of three battery capacities, and is aiming to significantly undercut the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Kia e-Niro with a starting price of just £22,500. As revealed by Auto Express towards the end of 2017, the first I.D. will be a five-door hatchback which, at 4.25 metres long, is almost identical in size to a Golf. The potential for extra cabin space can be seen in the proportions of the car in our spy images. The bonnet is much shorter than that of a Golf - it only needs to house an air conditioning system - allowing for much more space inside for occupants. Boot space is also expected to measure up closely to a Golf, so expect around 380 litres with all five seats in place." It starts at 205 miles at 48kWh for the slow one, up to 341 miles 62kWh for the fast one. They need to do 100,000 of these next year, Zwickau is aiming for 1,500 cars a day by 2021, and there will be fewer options for the spec to drive efficiency. OTA updates are confirmed now, as is permanent connectivity. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/97043/volkswagen-id-neo-new-spy-shots-of-vws-2019-electric-hatch SPY SHOTS #2 - RENAULT CAPTUR Again from AutoExpress "A new Renault Captur crossover with plug-in hybrid power is being developed ahead of going on sale in early 2020. Renault is developing an all-new plug-in hybrid system making use of a Nissan-developed 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system. The electric motor will occupy a dual role, both providing with petrol engine with additional torque and power, plus offering up to 30 miles of all-electric running." It will come with a 9.8kWh battery. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/renault/captur/105085/new-2020-renault-captur-crossover-spied-out-in-the-cold SPY SHOTS #3 - BMW iNEXT The winter test centre of the BMW Group in Arjeplog, Sweden is the setting for the current complete vehicle tests. The test drives with the camouflaged BMW iNEXT are being conducted on snow-covered roads and ice-covered lakes, where low temperatures and minimal road friction dominate everyday testing. The cold poses a challenge, above all, for the electric motor, the high-voltage battery and the cooling system of the BMW iNEXT. The testing engineers also attach particular importance to the eDrive energy management system. They analyse the way in which the extreme sub-zero temperatures affect how the energy storage system recharges, how electricity is transferred to the electric motor, how the electrical system is supplied with energy and how the heating and air condition systems respond. The series production version of the BMW iNEXT will be manufactured in the BMW Plant in Dingolfing from 2021. NISSAN LEAF E-PLUS ORDERS POURING IN: EUROPE "Nissan has received more than 3,000 pre-orders for 3.ZERO Limited Edition of the latest LEAF e+ in Europe, since its unveiling about a month ago. That’s almost two-thirds of the planned run of 5,000 units of the exclusively well-equipped trim version." says Mark Kane over at InsideEVs.com: "Nearly half of those pre-orders come from… Norway, where the Nissan LEAF was the best-selling car of any kind or type in 2018." https://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-e-plus-order-europe/ TESLA READIES FOR MODEL 3 CUSTOMER DELIVERIES IN CHINA AS CARGO SHIP ARRIVES AT PORT "Preparations to deliver the first batch of Tesla Model 3 vehicles to customers in China are underway with the recent arrival of cargo ship Glovis Symphony at the Port of Tianjin." according to Teslarati: " The carrier entered the port on Monday around 7 am local time after a 19-day journey from the San Francisco Bay Area where Tesla vehicles make their way from the company’s factory in Fremont to the loading dock. A shipment of Performance Model 3s received in Hong Kong last month seems to have primarily contained test drive and display vehicles." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-deliveries-china-cargo-shipment CHEVY BOLT & BAOJUN E100 LEAD GM GLOBAL EV SALES IN 2018 Back to InsideEVs and Wade Malone: "While plug-in General Motors deliveries dropped in the United States last year, the automaker saw a significant increase in global plug-in sales in 2018. The Chevy Bolt EV again led the electric offerings, clocking in at 27,918 units delivered worldwide. However, The Baojun E100/E200 also impressed with 25,888 sales in China. The Chevy Volt follows close behind with 25,298 units sold globally. Baojun (jointly owned by General Motors (GM) and SAIC Motor) recently expanded availability of their tiny two seat EV. The recently launched E200 will be replacing the E100 on the market." https://insideevs.com/bolt-ev-baojun-e100-gm-plug-in-sales-2018/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… Are you part of a EV club or association online or physically? Do you think there’s more reason for electric car owners to be part of community compared to gas cars? Or not at all?
