This video is a conversation between Troy and Lanny Bassham about performance and how it is generated. They discuss the observation that 95% of winning is done by 5% of participants and explore why this is the case. They talk about their experiences in sports like international rifle shooting and how they realized that there was something the elite performers were doing that they weren't. They introduce the performance model, which consists of the conscious, subconscious, and self-image parts. They explain that self-image is crucial for performance and discuss how it can be built through positive imprints and reinforcement. They also touch on the importance of analyzing performance and focusing on solutions rather than mistakes. The conversation concludes with a discussion on creating an environment that fosters growth and the impact of external imprints on self-image.

Joining us this month, all the way from Central Florida, is Coach Charles Stephenson. In this episode we discuss some of the biggest changes happening in Collegiate Athletics and how they affect our communication with our athletes. Key concerns such as Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal are two of the biggest entities transforming the college landscape. These changes present a challenge to holding athletes accountable. Coach Stephenson dives into how he holds his athletes accountable and how training today's collegiate athlete is becoming more similar to a professional performance model. Lastly, we discuss a great event that Charles has been putting on since 2008, the High Performance Basketball Symposium. Tune in for this month's episode as we continue to kick off the year. Charles Stephenson is currently the Director of Basketball Performance at the University of Central Florida. Coach Stephenson has over 35 years of experience as a strength coach at the collegiate level. Stephenson is also the founder and director of High-Performance Basketball Symposium, an annual symposium for strength and conditioning coaches from college to high school and the NBA. Stephenson earned his master's degree in exercise physiology from UVA in 1989 and did his undergraduate work at the College of William & Mary, graduating with a bachelor's degree in physical education. Today's podcast features Clifton Harski. Cliff has been in human performance for two decades and is highly active in movement education, leading over 450 workshops and certifications since 2011. Cliff is the COO for the Pain Free Performance Specialist Certification while developing and running the Functional Kettlebell Training Certification. Cliff developed a small group training fitness franchise, Fitwall, which had 7 locations across 5 states prior to Covid. He has over 15 certifications in movement training, strength and conditioning, and a masterful and inter-connected thought process on all things human movement, strength and performance. What is interesting with the human performance, strength and conditioning model is that it hinges heavily on things that a number can be tied to. Physical strength is very easy to track through various gym maxes, and conditioning is just as simple, based on whatever key test a coach decides to use with their group. At the same time, “movement” requires a greater intuition of the entire process of athleticism. For today's podcast, Clifton discusses how he looks at the human performance industry in light of movement + strength + conditioning, and not just the latter two. He gives his model of the 3A's (be able, be athletic, be adaptable, talks about the role of movement variability in training, speaks on rotational kettlebell training concepts, movement coaching, and much more. This episode puts the entirety of human performance coaching into perspective from an individual who has seen a massive range of training methods and philosophies. Water is the great equalizer. For most, it's where our true limits are found, tested and overcome. Where failure becomes the stepping stone to greatness. In this episode, PJ Nestler, the Director of Performance at XPT: Extreme Performance Training, joined Fran Racioppi and Jessie Graff on the final day of the 2023 Sandlot Jax and GORUCK Games to share how the highest achievers embrace discomfort to win no matter the challenge. PJ coaches athletes in the NFL, NHL, MLB and UFC and reveals the secrets behind XPT's unique training philosophy including their Performance Model of Breath, Move, Recover, Fuel & Connect. Founded by elite athletes Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reese, XPT puts water at the center of their training model, forcing athletes to face their fears early and often to build a foundation of hard work and resilience aimed at dealing with everyday life.PJ also illustrates how making gains requires a deliberate process, variation in our training and a focus on building connections with ourselves, others and purpose beyond our own goals. We can be great at one thing, but versatility across many things is the key to longevity and overall health. Learn more about XPT and PJ Nestler on the web or follow them on social media. Honda is offering this car for commercial use first because Japan lacks the charging infrastructure needed to roll out wide-scale EV deployment - By the same year in North America, Honda also plans to introduce two mid-to-large size EV models – a Honda Prologue SUV and an Acura SUV – which are currently being developed with General Motors at prices that are cost-competitive with internal combustion engine vehicles. - The Honda e: Architecture, which the company plans to introduce in 2026, will be an EV platform that includes both a hardware and software layer and is cloud-connected.Like many other automakers, Honda sees the potential for the software-defined vehicle to help bring in recurrent revenue through third-party applications. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 30th September. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BMW IX FIRST DRIVE REVIEW "The 2022 iX is one of two new BMW EVs coming to the US next year. But while the upcoming i4 is pretty much just a 4 Series Gran Coupe with an electric powertrain, the iX is a clean-sheet design from the ground up. It's unlike anything else in BMW's current portfolio." says Roadshow: "It all starts with a composite spaceframe made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics, aluminum and high-strength steel. Sound familiar? This is the same framework BMW used when building the i3 hatchback and i8 coupe, and just like those cars, the iX's body structure is as light as it is strong. It's hard to get a sense of how big the iX is, especially in photos. At 195.0 inches long, 77.4 inches wide and 66.7 inches tall, the iX is about the size of a BMW X5 SUV, just a little shorter in height. In the US, the iX will come standard with 20-inch wheels, and a range of 21- and 22-inch options will be available." Firstly, it's lighter than converting a traditional architecture over for an electric vehicle. The structural points and package requirements are designed specifically for a battery pack in the floor, electric motors at each axle, and the lack of traditional powertrain equipment. So there's no waste in the chassis." points out BMW Blog: "For instance, the completely flat rear trunk floor in the iX is only possible because it doesn't have a traditional transmission tunnel to work around. The battery can be stored completely flat underneath the floor with no obstructions. Therefore, the battery is packaged better and rear passengers have far more foot room. Also, because the rear subframes and suspension were designed for an electric motor, the entire eDrive unit can be stored under the rear trunk floor with no intrusion into cargo space." Read more: https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/09/28/2022-bmw-ix-xdrive50-test-drive/ "The high-voltage battery pack has made similar gains in terms of increased energy density—about 40 percent compared to the battery in the outgoing i3. BMW sources the prismatic cells from CATL and Samsung SDI, but the rest is done in-house in a new battery facility at its Dingolfing factory. The iX xDrive50 uses a 106.3 kWh pack (useable; gross capacity is 111.5 kWh) comprising six modules of 50 cells each and another five modules each with 40 cells." according to Ars Technica: "Since leaving the factory 1,235 miles (1,987 km) ago, the iX I was testing averaged 2.8 miles/kWh (22.1 kWh/100 km), which includes time running flat-out on derestricted German Autobahns at 124 mph (200 km/h). the iX can DC fast-charge at up to 195 kW, taking 40 minutes or less to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent. AC charging maxes out at 11 kW on single-phase electricity" Read more: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/09/forget-the-looks-love-the-tech-the-83200-bmw-ix-electric-suv " It makes 516 horsepower, does 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, and offers a range of about 300 miles (not official just yet in the U.S., but that's the estimate, and fits with what I saw in use). That front hood, by the way, is weird. Normally, all you can open in the front is the BMW badge, which gives access to the washer fluid reservoir and a bit of cargo room, provided your cargo is one solitary meatball wrapped in a napkin. The hood itself can be opened, but it's a bit of a chore involving two separate latches, and there are no stays or even one of those hinged sticks to hold the hood open; this is clearly a no user-serviceable parts inside kind of deal." writes Jason at Jalopnik: "On the autobahn, at speeds of 130 to 140 mph, the iX is a speedy, silent mobile room. The wheels have been designed to be especially aerodynamic and quiet, and as a result there's pretty minimal road noise. To keep things from being too masoleum-quiet, there's artificial sounds that get played, and they're actually and maybe a little surprisingly good. BMW got musician Hans Zimmer to come up with a bunch of EV sounds, and I found that they provided valuable feedback about throttle position and enhanced the overall experience without seeming forced or too artificial. It's well-executed." The awd variant, meanwhile, gets two motors. The rear-wheel motor will deliver 160 kW while the front achieves 74 kW, for a total system output of 234 kW. Finally, a third variant called the Performance Model will be all-wheel drive and achieve output of 320 kW in Sports Mode and top out at 360 kW in Boost Mod. A health organization in New Zealand hands in its standard accreditations for a more strenuous criteria program. This is a very interesting case study in which Spectrum Care in New Zealand decided to trade in their standard accreditation for a performance-based model. Being a government funded organizations, Spectrum had certifications that they were required to keep and accreditations that they achieved voluntarily to show a standard of excellence. They consistently achieved the maximum three-year certification for the voluntary accreditation. After evaluation the accreditation, Spectrum felt it only assessed the health and hospital side of things. The organization wanted something more strenuous that really assessed how they managed their business. After some consideration, Spectrum handed in their accreditation certificate and went for the New Zealand Business Excellence Criteria. This is closely aligned with the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. This Criteria accreditation assesses seven organizational elements including leadership, strategic planning, business results, process analysis, etc. This gives a better overall evaluation of the business and goes further than just assessing what they do. This evaluation system assesses how they manage and plan for what they do, how they manage the people and the information, and their customers. See, a company can be good at turning out widgets, but they could be even better if they assessed these seven other elements. After working towards the Baldrige-based criteria, Spectrum decided to apply for the New Zealand Business Excellence Award. The organization received the Silver Award after evaluation and said their obvious next step is to go for the gold. I love organizations that look for improvement. Spectrum was doing great but looked at the system that said they were doing great and decided they could do better. Once they achieved better, they knew there was still a higher level and strived to achieve that. There's always, always room for improvement. In this episode, Coach Anthony Grasso from the University of Connecticut Football joins me to discuss his thought process on developing a High Performance Sports Model. Coach Grasso and I share a very similar last name and are both Italian. We joke around a bit about our Italian parents and some other funny Italian inside jokes. High performance models can stem from everything done in the weight room, to practice tempo, training room rehabs, etc. Everything is accounted for in these models so that athletes can achieve peak performance without hiccups. I hope you enjoy this fun and educational episode of Toes On The Line, and yes ... I want to apologize in advanced about my language in this episode lol. However aside from that, I believe Coach Grasso lays out a great though process on how High Performance Models should be designed and also what to take into account when drawing one up.

TESLA CUTS PRICES IN NORTH AMERICA AND CHINA "Tesla has cut prices in North America on all of its cars except the Model Y by up to 6%. The delivery times for custom ordered Model 3’s has been reduced from 5–7 weeks to 3–5 weeks for the Standard Range Plus trim and 4–5 weeks for the other Model 3’s. Similarly, the custom order times for the Model X and S have shifted from 3–7 weeks to 4–6 weeks." says CleanTEchnica: "While the price cuts are desirable from a buyer’s standpoint and help Tesla advance its mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy, they do show that Tesla’s demand for cars has been affected somewhat by the worldwide health crisis." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/27/breaking-tesla-cuts-model-3-x-s-prices-up-to-6-in-north-america-model-y-unchanged/ CNBC notes: "Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced earlier this month that the price of the company’s advanced driver assistance system, which Tesla markets as “FSD” or “full self-driving,” would increase this July by $1,000, with more increases in the future. During Tesla’s Q1 earnings call, executives also said Tesla would offer FSD as a subscription service. Musk said at that time, of the subscription option, “It will be probably toward the end of this year.” https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/27/tesla-price-cuts-show-realism-in-face-of-coronavirus-slowdown.html TechCrunch said: "The base price of Model 3 standard range plus is now $37,990, a $2,000 reduction. But the biggest cuts were made to Tesla’s more expensive, luxury vehicles, the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV. The Model S long range plus now starts at $74,990, a decrease of $5,000. The more expensive Model S performance as well as the two Model X configurations also saw prices slashed by $5,000. The traditional big three U.S. automakers, Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, have turned to 0% financing rates as well as deferred or longer-term payment options." https://techcrunch.com/2020/05/27/tesla-cuts-prices-across-ev-line-up-ends-free-supercharging-for-model-s-model-x/ "All the pricier trims are also cheaper than yesterday. For example, a Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive Model 3 with Long Range now costs $46,990, down from $48,990. And the Performance Model 3 costs $54,990, down from $56,990. Pricier Model S and Model X trims all got a $5,000 price reduction " repotrs Mashable: "It's worth noting that the cheapest Model 3 still costs $35,000, but that one's not listed on Tesla's website; you have to call Tesla or physically visit a Tesla store to get it. The price of Tesla's Model Y, for which the deliveries started in March, remained unchanged." https://mashable.com/article/tesla-price-cuts/ Tesla has also removed its mention of free Supercharging on new Model S and Model X orders. ALL-ELECTRIC VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE NOW AVAILABLE FOR UK CUSTOMERS TO ORDER The Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric – Volvo’s first all-electric car – is now available for UK customers to order. The first of five fully electric cars to be launched by the Swedish company over the next five years, the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric P8 is capable of travelling more than 249 miles on a single charge. The XC40 P8’s long range does not come at the expense of performance, with its twin electric motors producing 408hp to deliver a 0-62mph time of only 4.9 seconds. The lack of an internal combustion engine frees up space for an additional 30-litre storage compartment or ‘frunk’ under the front bonnet, while the placement of the batteries under the centre of the car means space is not compromised elsewhere. Initially offered in R-Design specification, the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is available from £53,155, with UK deliveries expected to start in early 2021. 78kWh battery. fast charging up to 150kW. 1,500kg towing (towbar is £1,125). Climate & Heated seats: 775 Driver assist: 1550 Power seats: 624 Parking cams: 575 Glass roof: 1000 Wireless phone charger: 175 Heat pump: 575 The heat pump acts primarily as a range extender that helps save battery power in the pure electric XC40 Recharge. When it’s cold outside, it transports thermal energy from either the ambient air or the battery and releases this energy to heat up the cabin. This transport of heat is provided by a compressor which consumes less energy compared to the car's standard electrical heater. And by also supporting the air conditioner to work more efficiently, the heat pump helps save electric energy at a temperature range from 0°C up to 25–30°C. The heat pump can also help warm or cool the battery to optimise performance and range during long trips or heavy loads. TOYOTA REVEALS PROACE ELECTRIC "Toyota officially introduces the all-electric PROACE Electric delivery van (hinted in 2019) in selected European markets. The French group previously announced: Peugeot e-Expert Citroën ë-Jumpy (aka Citroën ë-Dispatch) Opel Vivaro-e / Vauxhall Vivaro-e The specification is basically the same, including two battery options: 50 kWh battery for WLTP range of 230 km 75 kWh battery for WLTP range of 330 km https://insideevs.com/news/425503/toyota-proace-electric-15-year-battery-warranty/ BMW X2 XDRIVE25E SAC PHEV TO BE LAUNCHED JULY 2020 "BMW will launch the new X2 xDrive25e SAC (“Sport Activity Coupé”) PHEV, announced in January (earlier post), in Europe in July 2020 with pricing from €47,250 (US$51,800)." reports Green Car Congress: "The new BMW X2 xDrive25e features the fourth and latest generation of BMW eDrive technology developed for the plug-in hybrid models. An electric motor generating an output of 70 kW/95 hp and a high-voltage battery with a gross energy content of 10.0 kWh enable an all-electric range of up to 57 kilometers in the legal EU test cycle (35 miles). Together, the 3-cylinder combustion engine, which delivers torque to the front wheels, and the electric motor powering the rear wheels produce a system output of 162 kW/220 hp and create a hybrid all-wheel drive configuration. The new BMW X2 xDrive25e sprints from a standing start to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds." HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP TO GET ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERIES FROM LG CHEM "Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai Motor and its sister company Kia Motors has picked LG Chem as one of the battery suppliers for its upcoming new electric vehicles, a group spokesman said on Wednesday." reports Reuters: "Details of the supply contract including the electric vehicle (EV) model and the full amount of the deal, which are yet to be decided, will be confidential, the spokesman said. LG Chem declined to comment. Hyundai Motor said last year it would launch 16 EV models by 2025 with an aim to boost EV sales to 560,000 by then." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hyundai-motor-lg-chem-electric-batter/hyundai-motor-group-to-get-electric-vehicle-batteries-from-lg-chem-idUSKBN2331FR AUDI E-TRON IS THE NEW KING OF NORWAY "Norway remains one of the most fascinating auto markets in the world. With a 70% plug-in vehicle market share in the first 4 months of 2020, there is nothing that comes close to it. That isn’t an overnight figure either — the country has been far ahead of any other market in terms of plug-in vehicle market share for several years."That said, the market leader is now a vehicle that would typically be outside the price range of a working class family in other countries, but Norway is a rich country (very rich country) with adventurous terrain, so it makes a bit of sense. The Audi e-tron isn’t just first — it’s far ahead in the #1 spot so far this year." says CleanTechnica: "A German model that was in the #1 spot for many, many months, the Volkswagen e-Golf, is solidly in second at 6% market share. After that, you’ve got the Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona EV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Tesla Model 3, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, and then a long tail of remaining PEVs. You also have a handful of plug-less vehicles scattered into the overall sales rankings (see charts below)." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/25/audi-e-tron-is-the-new-king-of-norway/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK What are your desired specs for an electric pick-up truck? Show #788 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 24th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. LORDSTOWN MOTORS CHIEF SAYS NEW FACTORY COULD PRODUCE 600,000 ELECTRIC VEHICLES A YEAR "Lordstown Motors is using the manufacturing delay caused by the coronavirus to reconfigure the Lordstown assembly plant it bought from General Motors last year to build its Endurance electric pickups trucks. It expects to manufacture 30 pre-production trucks before the end of this year." writes Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "CEO Steve Burns, who previously founded Workhorse, says he expects to build 20,000 electric trucks in 2021 and will hire 600 workers to make that possible, but that is just the tip of his ambitions. The Lordstown factory could build 400,000 cars a year at its peak, but Burns tells the Detroit Free Press that because electric vehicles have many fewer parts and components, it should be possible to build 600,000 electric trucks and SUVs there a year. Burns likes to say the Endurance has only four moving parts — the wheels. They will have the truck’s electric motors embedded into them, the first production vehicle to use in-wheel motors pioneered by Elaphe. Starting at $52,500, the Endurance will have 600 horsepower on tap, a range of 250 miles, a towing capacity of 7,500 lbs, room for 5, AC outlets for power tools at remote locations, and the ability to recharge its battery to 95% in 30 minutes using a Level 3 DC fast charger." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/25/lordstown-motors-chief-says-new-factory-could-600000-electric-vehicles-a-year/ BRITAIN'S LARGEST SOLAR FARM POISED TO BEGIN DEVELOPMENT IN KENT "Britain’s largest solar farm, capable of generating enough clean electricity to power 91,000 homes, is poised to receive the greenlight from ministers this week." according to The Guardian: "The subsidy-free renewables park is expected to reach a capacity of 350MW by installing 880,000 solar panels – some as tall as buses – across 364 hectares (900 acres) of farmland in the Kent countryside. The UK’s growing fleet of solar panels has produced record levels of clean electricity in recent weeks, reaching fresh highs of 9.68GW last month and helping the UK energy system to its longest stretch without coal-fired power since the Industrial Revolution. The renewables industry believes the UK’s solar power capacity could rise to 27GW by 2030 after the UK government dropped a block which prevented solar farms and onshore wind projects from competing in subsidy contract auctions." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/may/24/britains-largest-solar-farm-poised-to-begin-development-in-kent UK CHARGING PARTNERSHIP LIBERTY CHARGE MAKES DEBUT "The UK-based Liberty Global Ventures and Zouk Capital have announced a joint venture partnership named Liberty Charge. The partnership will roll out on-street charging points for electric vehicles in residential areas across the UK." reports electrive: "A partnerhship with Virgin Media supports Liberty Global’s efforts in the space of charging infrastructure, as the Virgin Media Park and Charge (VPACH) project aims to deploy 1,200 charging sockets across the country by early 2021." https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/23/uk-charging-partnership-liberty-charge-makes-debut/ BUYING A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED EV MAKES A LOT OF SENSE "Choosing a certified pre-owned (CPO) car is one way to mitigate the risk of buying a used vehicle. The CPO system can also be a good way to buy used electric vehicles. Automaker-sponsored, dealership-administered CPO programs offer extended warranties for the electric powertrain components, which could provide some peace of mind for owners who are spending big money on an unfamiliar technology. Everything we say here about EVs applies to hybrids as well." says Car & Driver: "Most companies that build and sell electrified vehicles have a separate warranty to cover the battery and electric motor. The industry has mostly coalesced around an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for new vehicles with EV powertrains, though of course there are overachievers: Hyundai offers a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty for its new hybrids and EVs.Nissan said in 2018 that Leaf batteries would last an estimated 10-12 years longer than the cars they power, and Tesla says it is working on a battery that will last a million miles. When’s the last time you saw a passenger car with that many miles on the clock?" https://www.caranddriver.com/shopping-advice/a32583041/buy-cpo-hybrid-ev/ TESLA LAUNCHES FALLOUT SHELTER IN-CAR VIDEO GAME AND MORE WITH NEW UPDATE "Tesla is starting to push a new software update that includes the video game Fallout Shelter, Tesla Theater improvements, and more." reports electrek: "Now we learn that Tesla is starting to deploy the video game in its vehicles as part of a new 2020.20 software update currently being pushed to early access owners. Last year, Tesla added Xbox controller support for its arcade game. You are going to need an Xbox controller with a USB cable. Update: Tesla just told us that Fallout Shelter currently doesn’t support an Xbox controller. Unlike Tesla’s racing game, which works with a controller, you can only use the touchscreen for Fallout Shelter." Tesla say: "Fallout Shelter puts you in control of a state-of-the-art underground Vault from Vault-Tec. Build the perfect Vault, keep your Dwellers happy, and protect them from the dangers of the Wasteland. With this release, you can now play, pause, and skip video playback with your steering wheel controls while using Theater Mode. As usual, Theater Mode is only available while your vehicle is in ‘PARK.’" https://electrek.co/2020/05/21/tesla-fallout-shelter-cars-update/ 400 MILES IN TESLA MODEL S RAVEN From the latest Bjorn Myland video: Model S LR Raven Dry 16 degrees Michelin PS4 245/45-19 Speed 90 km/h 144 Capacity 92,7kWh 644 Km / 400 miles TESLA BAKES IN MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE UPGRADE PACKAGE "Tesla has decided to bake in the Model 3 Performance’s Performance Upgrade Package (PUP) for each order of the premium all-electric sedan. With this, the electric car maker has taken yet another step towards streamlining its vehicle production, while doing away with vehicles that were dubbed by the community as “sleeper” Performance Model 3s. " says Teslarati: "The update to Tesla’s online configurator appears to have happened recently, considering that the order page last Sunday still had options to select the Performance Upgrade Package for every Model 3 Performance order. The PUP is a free option, and it includes 20” performance wheels, performance brakes, a carbon fiber spoiler, lowered suspension, aluminum allow pedals, Track Mode, and increased top speed from 145 mph to 162 mph. While the PUP was free, some buyers of the Model 3 Performance opt to forego the upgrade for the sake of more range" Range up from 299 to 322. 18" Aero wheels. The UK configurator has always been like that. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-performance-upgrade-package-update/ COULD TESLA REVEAL A 700-MILE MODEL 3? "With Tesla Battery Day reportedly around the corner now, the focus of late has been on the million-mile battery that Tesla may well reveal. While such a battery would surely be big news, what if Tesla has something else up its sleeve, like a mega energy-dense battery that will extend range significantly while at the same time dropping production costs? This would for certain be even bigger news than a battery that lasts a million miles." says Yahoo News: "Even today, the Model S goes 400 miles on a charge and that's with battery tech that in some ways dates back to 2012, so imagine what would happen with today's breakthrough battery tech in the Model S. One thing is for certain, all eyes will be on what Tesla reveals on Battery Day, which will likely occur as a two-part event with the first coming very soon:" https://uk.news.yahoo.com/could-tesla-reveal-700-mile-170000152.html QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS JAN from eMOBILITY NORWAY I think, instead of giving up, Dyson should have invited partners to the project or rewrite the scope. The result was not as first planed, especially the price was much too high for a big market. Probably the most considerable cost was the battery as the range was close to 1000km. That is four times more than needed for most users. That range tells me that they wanted to make a replacement of a fossil car, instead of creating a modern EV. What if Dyson had made the battery smaller to reduce the price? Or they could have made it modular, giving the customers the possibility to choose the size depending on the need and wallet. RAJEEV NARAYAN As great as it would have been to see the Dyson EV released, they probably made the right decision not to. At that price point it would have been a hard sell, as they lack the branding that Porsche or MB has. I hope, however, that they don’t give up. They could license the MEB platform, use existing battery tech from the likes of SKI or LG, that is more than good enough and come out with a compelling EV and acquire experience. Then, someday, if their solid state batteries pan out, who knows what they could bring to market. AJ TARQUINO, OHIO USA I’m sure there are hundreds of customers that would/could afford this vehicle. With improvements that are being made with range and longevity of the battery, shouldn’t this help to drive the cost down on the Dyson automobile and make it affordable for more people ?? Couldn’t Dyson spring off their expensive platform, like Tesla has, to make a lower cost production model that would/could draw the interest of the average buyer of EV customers? LEE BROWN, SCOTLAND Yes Dyson should have continued their research, they are pioneers in battery technology. All the associated costs with EV R&D would have come down in price over time and they could have then produced a smaller, more affordable EV. I’ve read they had quite a lost of grant money given to them by the UK Government - will he have to pay that back now? JOHN FRUHWIRTH I'm all for Elon's corporate mission statement which goes something like this.. "Accelerate the transition of transportation to renewable energy". As such, it does not make sense to only make EVs as expensive toys for the rich. If we are to make a significant progress in transitioning to a cleaner, greener planet then it is essential that EVs reach price parity with ICE vehicles. Not only personal vehicles but ALL commercial/industrial vehicles need to be converted to become BEVs. BRENTON POTTS I am very disappointed that Dyson cancelled their EV. I sure wouldn't be able to afford one but I reason that Tesla's first roadster was exclusively for affluent enthusiasts and look where they are now. I believe that the brains and design knowhow behind Dyson could have brought something really positive to the EV space that would eventually trickle down to something I could afford to dream about. 2 positive takeaways though, they released their progress so other EV makers can be inspired and James Dyson said he is not against other EV makers using his solid state batteries in their cars! JEFF MURRAY As far as Dyson goes, I think Tesla is a good example where they started out high priced and used that knowledge to be able to lower the prices in later generations. I think that a company just getting into the market is almost going to have to use that strategy, especially if they expect to have any kind of quality. Even if they made a good affordable product first, the low price may very well be seen as “cheap” as opposed to good value. That said, I highly doubt Dyson was in any “danger” of making an affordable product, given their prices on other products. PHILIP TRAUTMAN I was sad to see that the Dyson effort failed. From the outside it looked great. My wife and I could use an EV with that form factor (at a reasonable price.) However, at this point in the maturation of the EV market, I think the biggest challenge is perceived price. Most people around here (Southern Oregon) seem to think that only rich people can afford an EV. That needs to change, and more high-profile announcements of high-priced EVs isn’t going to help. Assuming people were paying attention to the Dyson news at all, I’m sure the announcement that they couldn’t build their car at a reasonable price also increased this perception. I want to see EVs continue to fill all the niches in the automotive world (especially a van with decent range), but at this point some high-profile affordable options would help. We’ll see how the VW rollout goes! One of the things I like about your podcast is that you talk about all the EVs out there from halo cars to compact cars. George Greene is the Associate Athletic Director of High Performance and Competitive Success at Stony Brook University. With the high performance model becoming more commonplace in US sports, George is on the forefront of bringing it the college sector. He is the first S&C coach in the country to manage competitive success and has been instrumental in enhancing the student athlete experience at Stony Brook. George and I discuss the many facets of his role in providing a holistic mindset for his athletes. George details the level of collaboration between himself and the various sectors of the athletic department, his oversight of the nutrition program and his continued efforts to educate his athletes with data driven insights into their performance and recovery. George also outlines his work in the gym with the men's basketball program and how "feel" is important in making programming decisions. His insight on building relationships was especially impactful as nothing is more an important to a streamlined approach in a high performance setting with all the moving parts involved. I really enjoyed this conversation and urge other collegiate S&C coaches to think about George's message, which left me thinking about how much more I could provide for my athletes by communicating and sharing information with others. VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE "The Volvo XC40 Recharge arrives as Volvo’s first battery electric car, and first ‘Recharge’ model, with 75kWh battery and 402bhp." says CarsUK: "Looking almost identical to the ICE XC40, the XC40 Recharge gets the blanked-off grille we’ve already seen and a 75kWh battery pack lurking under the floor. And it has promising specs to go with its 75kWh battery. Volvo say it will deliver more than 250 miles on a single charge. But most appealing is that it comes with pretty much the same 4WD electric powertrain as the Polestar 2, which means a chunky 402bhp and 487lb/ft of torque, enough to scoot the XC40 Recharge to 62mph in under 5.0 seconds." https://www.carsuk.net/volvo-xc40-recharge-revealed-the-electric-xc40-arrives-as-volvos-first-ev/ As per jalopnik, buyers of the PHEV model get free electricity for a year: "“Recharge plug-in hybrid model will come with free electricity for a year, provided through a refund for the average electricity cost during that period.”" https://jalopnik.com/volvos-first-full-ev-is-called-xc40-recharge-and-comes-1839101896 Anders Gustafsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars USA: "We're going to launch one BEV [battery electric vehicle] every year through 2025". CNET says: "Volvo's next big platform, Scalable Product Architecture 2 (SPA 2), will arrive in 2021 with the next-generation XC90 SUV. Production of the XC90 will kick off in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2022. "That car will of course be able to be sold with a BEV solution from the start," Gustafsson said. For its future electrification efforts, Volvo will draw on the engineering efforts of its Polestar brand. SPA 2, as we've reported earlier, will also underpin the upcoming Polestar 3 electric SUV, which is also expected to launch around 2021 or 2022. The XC40 EV was also built this way. Its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) was originally designed to handle a full-EV application, and, in addition to the XC40 EV, it underpins the Polestar 2 sedan. Look for the Volvo XC40 EV to go on sale in the US in late 2020." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/new-volvo-electric-vehicles-2025/ GREEN CAB GOES GREENER, MOVING TO ALL-ELECTRIC FLEET A story I missed from two days ago on WKOW.com: "A Madison cab company is set to become one of the first in the country to run an all-electric-vehicle Tesla fleet. Green Cab’s owner tells 27 News the taxi service is partnering with Zerology to replace the fleet of hybrid cars with Tesla vehicles. Green Cab’s website says it’s the city’s only all hybrid rideshare service. It’s been in Madison since 2010." https://wkow.com/news/top-stories/2019/10/14/green-cab-goes-greener-moving-to-all-electric-fleet/ TESLA MODEL Y ELECTRIC SUVS SPOTTED "At least three red Tesla Model Y electric SUVs were spotted on Tuesday morning (Australian time) being transported near the Californian carmaker’s Fremont factory." says The Driven, and they've posted a tweet by @Model3Owners which said: "A few Model Ys spotted in Fremont being transported" "Another Model Y in Midnight Silver was also spotted on Highway 680 in Fremont apparently undergoing road testing. This particular model has created a great deal of excitement with its 19″ aero sports wheels which appear to be the same offered on the Performance Model 3 in China." https://thedriven.io/2019/10/16/tesla-model-y-electric-suvs-spotted-in-lead-up-to-early-production-start-in-2020/ https://thedriven.io/2019/10/16/tesla-model-y-electric-suvs-spotted-in-lead-up-to-early-production-start-in-2020/ ELECTRIC RENAULT TWINGO CONFIRMED BY PRODUCT PLANNING BOSS "An all-electric Renault Twingo (a city car smaller than ZOE) has been expected for years and it seems that it will be finally introduced!" says InsideEVs: "This summer we saw a leaked calendar of new model launches by Renault, which indicated a Twingo IV Z.E. in 2022, but the Twingo BEV might be introduced as early as next year! It's interesting that the Twingo Z.E. was on the table even before ZOE. At some point, Renault even unveiled a concept (in 2013, after the ZOE) and was exploring joint production with Daimler (Renault Twingo Z.E. - smart forfour EV), but in the end, only Daimler introduced a smart forfour EV." https://insideevs.com/news/376538/electric-renault-twingo-confirmed/ TESLA MODEL S PLAID PRODUCTION DATE REVEALED BY ELON MUSK "Elon Musk recently announced an estimated production date for the Tesla Model S “Plaid” P100D+ that’s currently running laps at the Nürburgring. According to the CEO, the track-capable, aerodynamically optimized variant of its flagship sedan will go into production around Summer 2020." writes Joey for Teslarati: "With Elon Musk’s recent update on Twitter, it now seems certain that the final iteration of its Model S Plaid P100D+ will be available for purchase less than a year from now. Quite interestingly, this date also comes just before Musk’s initial estimates for the start of Model Y deliveries, which was announced as Fall 2020 during the crossover’s unveiling last March." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-nurburgring-edition-production-date/ PUPILS TO COUNT NUMBER OF ZERO-EMISSION MILES TRAVELLED "School children are being encouraged to choose low-emission travel in a new competition launched by Go Ultra Low, the joint government and car industry initiative created to provide all the necessary information about electric vehicles." reports AirQualityNews: "TV presenter Ben Fogle, the Go Ultra Low Ambassador and face of the campaign, is challenging children to count the number of zero-emission miles they travel over the course of a week. The competition will draw attention to the emissions associated with different modes of transport and will encourage pupils to choose low emission travel instead. This includes walking, cycling, public transport or electric vehicles. There will be accompanying lesson plans for participating schools, which will aim to educate the pupils on how to reduce their carbon footprint through sustainable travel." https://airqualitynews.com/2019/10/16/pupils-to-count-number-of-zero-emission-miles-travelled/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… How can we make up for the lost revenue from taxing fossil fuels?
