In this episode, you will meet Alvaro de Ferranti. Alvaro is founder and leader of the Tabula Rasa Retreat, a therapeutic treatment center operating in Portugal, that uses the plant medicine ibogaine as part of wholistic treatments for addiction, mental health issues, and spiritual enhancement. Alvaro has been working therapeutically with iboga and ibogaine since 2016, and at Tabula Rasa he has received and treated more than 300 people. The broad application of this plant medicine is reflected in the stories of these people, who have come to Tabula Rasa to manage issues as varied as opioid-addiction, stimulant-addiction, PTSD, behavioral addiction, depression, eating disorder, anxiety, and spiritual disconnection. Ibogaine is one of the main alkaloids in the tabernanthe iboga plant, that grows in and around the rainforest of Gabon. The plant and its alkaloid are currently receiving increased attention among researchers and therapists, mainly because of its presuming potential to treat substance dependence. However, significant risks are also associated with iboga and ibogaine, and work is still needed to assess the efficacy and safety profile of this plant medicine. In the podcast, Alvaro and I touch briefly on the fascinating journey of the iboga plant from its roots in Gabon where it has been and is still used for healing and initiation as part of the spiritual tradition called Bwiti, and into its use in addiction treatment and therapies at both official centers and at underground facilities all around the world. We then turn to the topic of how iboga can heal various issues and help people “dissolve to resolve”. Alvaro describes the treatment protocol and the crucial safety measures taken at Tabula Rasa. We talk about the significance of trust, respect, and intentionality when working with iboga, the importance of having a social support structure before and after treatment, and some common psychological, physical, and emotional effects of a flood dose of ibogaine among their clients. Finally, we discuss the challenges and potentials around implementing ibogaine in more traditional psychiatry. The podcast is recorded at Tabula Rasa's serene farm in Portugal, where I had the pleasure to spend some months during my doctoral research in order to follow, take part in, and learn from their work.We hope you enjoy the conversation!Links:Tabula Rasa Retreat

Stepping into the studio with me, Bryan Hopkins, Matt Ferranti brought more than just his guitar; he carried tales of a transformative journey that's every bit as melodic as his tunes. As we traded stories of life on the road and shared stages with the likes of Brett Young and Gavin DeGraw, Matt's narrative wove through the highs and lows of an artist's life. Joined by Jay Hartley, we unpacked the essence of Nashville's creative kinship, revealing how the city's collaborative heartbeat helped artists like Matt pivot from disrupted tours to new beginnings during the pandemic's peak. The thread of music's intertwining with life's pivotal moments was a recurring melody in our conversation. Matt opened up about the personal courage it took to leave a secure gig to chase his own dreams, reflecting the same bold spirit that led him to Nashville and into a successful partnership with Jay. We celebrated the release of Matt's EP, a testament to the support within the music community, as Brett Young not only co-produced the record but provided songs, showcasing the depth of their professional bond and camaraderie. As our session drew to a close, Matt graced us with a heart-stirring performance of "Find Other Hearts to Break," a raw, unreleased track that left us hanging on every chord. We wrapped up the symphony of our chat with a nod to the authenticity of artists like Jelly Roll and a moving rendition of "Love Somebody," which served as a reminder of music's enduring power to capture the soul of life's journey. It's not just an episode; it's an intimate backstage pass to the stories and songs that define the Heroes Journey podcast.
When twenty-year-old Walter Brooks was found dead from a bullet to the head on Valentine's Day 1902, suspicion immediately fell on Brooks' nineteen-year-old sometimes-girlfriend, Florence Burns. The two were known to have a tumultuous relationship and had fought violently on the morning of his death, and there was considerable evidence indicating that Burns had been in the hotel room at the time of Brooks' murder. However, despite all the evidence indicating guilt, Florence Burns was never brought to trial for Brooks' murder or even formally charged with a crime, and Walter Brooks murder officially remains an unsolved case in New York. While the story of Walter Brooks and Florence Burns is relatively uncomplicated in terms of the crime around which the story is built, the story is a remarkable illustration of the ways in which things like class, gender, and technological advances can influence and even shape how the law is applied in the United States. Indeed, at the time of the murder, the nation was undergoing incredibly social and cultural changes as a result of dramatically expanded transportation and communication technology, giving rise to a youth culture the likes of which had never been seen in the nation prior. That youth culture and the rebelliousness it produced in many young wealthy Americans played a direct role, not only in Walter's life and death, but also in the socio-cultural perspectives and Victorian beliefs that allowed Florence to get away with murder.Thank you to the wondrous Dave White of Bring me the Axe Podcast & 99 Cent Rental for Research!ReferencesEvening World. 1902. When writer / director Seth Ferranti received a twenty-five year LSD kingpin conviction, after faking his suicide and landing on the US Marshals Top-15 Most Wanted list, he thought his life was over. As a first time, non-violent offender, the lengthy sentence attracted media attention from The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, The Washington Times, and others. Turning despair into drive, Ferranti earned an associates, bachelors, and masters degree while in prison and started penning prison and gangster stories for VICE, Don Diva, FEDS, Hoopshype and others. He became a true-crime publisher from the cell block and built a website and publishing house, Gorilla Convict, that documented stories that the mainstream media was not willing to share. In February 2015, after serving 21 years, he was released from the Bureau of Prisons, to seek his fortune. Back in the world Ferranti continued his writing career as a journalist penning pieces for VICE, OZY, The Daily Beast, Dazed, MERRY JANE, and features for Penthouse and Real Crime Magazines, among others. He also embarked on his true passion, filmmaking. Ferranti joined forces with Shawn Rech and Transitions Studios to make WHITE BOY, a top ten Netflix feature documentary on Richard Wershe Jr. Seth also starred in the season one finale of VICE's I WAS A TEENAGE FELON. Modeling himself as the Quentin Tarantino of documentaries, he currently has four documentary projects in production and three in post at his studio OUTLAW FILMS. It appears there is no stopping him…
Today, on Crime & Entertainment, we have Writer, Director, & Producer Seth Ferranti. Seth has quite the journey from Convict to Filmmaker. After landing on the U.S. Marshals Service "15 Most Wanted" list and being sentenced to a twenty-five-year sentence in federal prison for a first-time, nonviolent LSD and cannabis offense, Seth Ferranti built a writing and journalism career from his cell block in the "belly of the beast." His raw portrayals of prison life and crack-era gangsters have appeared in Diva, VICE, and Penthouse. From prison, Ferranti published books like Prison Stories and Street Legends, which made him a celebrity in and out of penitentiaries across the United States and abroad. His incredible story has been covered by the Washington Post, the Washington Times, and Rolling Stone, and he starred in the Season 1 finale of VICE's I Was A Teenage Felon. He also wrote, produced, and appeared in the hit Netflix documentary White Boy. Today, we highlight one of Seth's latest projects with Dope Men, America's First Drug Cartel. Arsonist-Killer Not Eligible for Elderly House Confinement Program Jack Ferranti, acting as his own attorney, appealed the District Court's orders denying his petition for habeas relief under 28 U.S.C. § 2241 and his motion to reconsider. FACTS Ferranti was responsible for causing a fire at his business that resulted in the death of a firefighter. The trial judge sentenced him to 435 months' imprisonment. See United States v. Ferranti, 928 F.Supp. 206, 21316 (E.D.N.Y. 1996). His conviction and sentence were affirmed on appeal. See United States v. Tocco, 135 F.3d 116 (2d Cir. 1998). In Jack Ferranti v. Warden Allenwood LSCI, No. 22-1892, United States Court of Appeals, Third Circuit (June 30, 2023) noted that Ferranti was convicted in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York of arson homicide, arson conspiracy, 16 counts of mail fraud, and witness tampering, based on an insurance-fraud scheme. The Third Circuit resolved the request for release to the elderly home confinement program (EOHDP). In 2020, Ferranti argued that he met the criteria for the EOHDP, and he asked for the District Court to order the BOP to process his application and place him in the program. ANALYSIS As the District Court explained, federal courts do not have the authority to grant the relief that Ferranti requested to order his placement in the EOHDP. The executive branch, not the courts, have control over an inmate's placement. Moreover, even if the ability to challenge the BOP's actions were available through habeas, Ferranti did not establish that he qualified for the program. The statute disqualifies those whom "the Bureau of Prisons, on the basis of information the Bureau uses to make custody classifications, and in the sole discretion of the Bureau, [determines] to have a history of violence." Further, even if he did qualify, the BOP would not be required to place him in the EOHDP because, again, the statute leaves placement as a matter of discretion for the BOP. In any event, the BOP did not err by concluding that Ferranti's history of violence-comprised of the underlying conduct for his convictions as well as disciplinary infractions in prison-disqualified him from participating in the EOHDP. ZALMA OPINION In an example of Chutzpah, Ferranti sought release from prison into the EOHDP in violation of the program's requirement that only a non-violent prisoner is allowed into the program. Just being elderly, especially after the arson-for-profit scheme resulted in the death of a firefighter, was denied by the District Court and the Third Circuit without hesitation. Housing debates continue to roil the region. We start with Arlington County Board Member Matt de Ferranti (D) on the marathon hearings about the county's Missing Middle plan, which advanced this week. And as budget season nears, we ask what de Ferranti would like the county to prioritize. Then, Montgomery County Council Vice President Andrew Friedson (D-District 1) tells us about a new bill that would "co-locate" affordable housing on public land. Friedson chairs the council's Planning, Housing & Parks Committee, so we'll also ask about his goals for the committee and where things stand with the beleaguered Planning Board. Plus, a familiar name is back in the news: Paul Wiedefeld has been tapped to be Maryland's transportation secretary by new Gov. Wes Moore. WAMU transportation reporter Jordan Pascale gives us the latest.
Matthew Ferranti is a PHD candidate in economics at Harvard University. In this conversation, we talk about a brand new paper that Matthew published titled: "Hedging Sanctions Risk: Cryptocurrency in Central Bank Reserves." As a drug dealing teen Ferranti sold LSD and marijuana at 15 East Coast colleges, crisscrossing across five states- Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland- a wanna-be rock star and Hunter S. Thompson-style outlaw whose hero's were Henry Rollins, Axl Rose, and Jim Morrison. He followed the Grateful Dead and considered himself a counter culture rebel, not a criminal, as he was breaking laws which he thought were wrong. He stands by those convictions today and see's himself more as an activist who was a little ahead of the times. A trailblazer of the legal cannabis and psychedelic movements. He began building a writing and journalism career from inside the belly of the beast. Discovering a passion and talent for writing Ferranti also studied the trade earning an associates, bachelors, and masters degree while in prison. Machine learning has helped shape just about every aspect of our digital lives, whether it's deciding which Netflix show or YouTube video to recommend to us or even teaching cars to drive themselves. One of the most innovative uses for machine learning, however, is in creating music. Just recently Google released Blob Opera, a machine learning tool by David Li that “pays tribute to and explores the original musical instrument: the voice.” There's a link below for you to try it out for yourself: all you have to do is direct each of the singing blobs by sliding its range up and down with your mouse, and listen as they compose their own harmonies. https://experiments.withgoogle.com/blob-opera (https://experiments.withgoogle.com/blob-opera) This sort of musical collaboration between humans and computers has been evolving for a surprisingly long time. There's some debate on just when the first electronic music was created, but the oldest recording comes from 1951. It's a sample of three songs created by Alan Turing's Ferranti Mark 1 computer, which filled up a whole room; the melodies were programmed by Christopher Strachey, a computer scientist who also drew upon his experience as a piano player to teach the computer how to play music. This early melding of art and science would pave the way for similar fusions of musical and scientific genius over the years. Want to hear the Ferranti's groundbreaking music for yourself? Just check out the link below for a digitally restored recording of that historic moment, and what the people listening had to say: https://soundcloud.com/guardianaustralia/first-ever-recording-of-computer-music (https://soundcloud.com/guardianaustralia/first-ever-recording-of-computer-music) Of course, synthetic music's come a long way over the past seventy years. Now, thanks to machine learning and the development of artificial neural networks, computers can compose their own songs with hardly any human guidance at all. Here's a link to “Mister Shadow,” a song entirely composed and performed by Sony Computer Science Lab's “Flow Machines” AI system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcGYEXJqun8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcGYEXJqun8) They can even mimic human voices, using deep learning paired with existing recordings to study and then duplicate a particular kind of voice. In 2019 Yamaha used its new VOCALOID:AI vocal software to recreate the voice of legendary singer Hibari Misora on the 30th anniversary of her passing. There's a link to the song below, and I think you'll agree that the result are uncanny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq_YIvx-lVc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq_YIvx-lVc) But how did we come all the way from a computer beeping the national anthem to writing and singing its own songs? What does machine learning really mean, and what does it mean for the future of the audio industry? The answer lies in patterns, and a computer's ability to recognize patterns and then generate new ones. Computers don't really know what music means, or even that they're making music. But by studying thousands and thousands of different songs, machine learning allows them to create a profile of all the different elements that those songs have in common, much the same way that facial recognition programs use thousands of pictures of people's faces to teach them what to look for. Then the computer takes everything it's learned about those songs and tries to create something new that fits the same profile. The first try probably won't be very good, but computers work fast, and each failure gives them more to learn from for their next try. With enough samples and enough feedback, the results start to sound less like noise and more like real music, even real singing. For Google's Blob Opera experiment, David Li recorded 16 hours of audio from six different opera singers and used it to teach the program how to sing opera. What we hear when we play it, however, doesn't come from any of those...

Note: This episode was recorded several months ago, before the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, and the protests that have followed. But even as she coped with the challenges of recovery and retirement, she was working on another project: a system to help other injured athletes manage their emotions and thrive through, and beyond, their rehab process. In this week's episode, Amanda—now a soccer coach and a certified mental performance consultant with her own company, Ferranti Empowerment—outlines the process by which she journaled and planned her way to a successful future. Gigi Ferranti, Graduate Gemologist and Jewelry Designer: How Fashion, Architecture, & Italian Heritage Influence Gigi Ferranti Jewelry From an early age, Gigi has been influenced by Italian architecture and jewelry design. As a fashion marketing and business major, Gigi began her career in management within a large retail clothing chain. She owned and ran her own high end boutique for twenty years, dressing and supplying her clients for special events and personal styling. After getting a taste of supplying her boutique with jewelry from the JA New York show, she transitioned into jewelry design, starting by acquiring her Graduate Gemology credentials from GIA New York. She worked briefly for David Yurman selecting gemstones for their prominent pieces, then returned to GIA to learn jewelry design. She launched Gigi Ferranti Jewelry in 2015, and hasn’t looked back! I met Gigi last summer at the JA New York show, and next week, she’ll be showing in Las Vegas for the first time for the Premier of the Premier Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center May 30 through June 3 in booth 2203. You can follow along with the Gigi and the Premier Show on Instagram @gigiferrantijewelry and @premier.showsand me @jewelrynavigator.

Damon was our very first coach (besides the owners) at Firewall. He is the first Firewall coach we've interviewed as well!As many of you know, me and Damon could talk forever. We only touched the tip of the iceberg to what could have been a much much longer conversation. Some of the main topics we hit go over are his childhood house (where his mom still lives), childhood sports which led him to hockey, high school hockey, how he became a firefighter, family dynamics, and how CrossFit changed his life. After figuring out he didn't want to continue down the path of public relations in college, it's safe to say he was a bit lost in life. From there, Damon found his way to Fidelity working on the phones. He knew that wasn't for him either. His brother introduced him to becoming either a police officer or firefighter.Currently, Damon is a full time firefighter in Waltham on Moody Street. He explains why he wanted to become a firefighter instead of a police officer.Damon is extremely transparent and real in our interview which we hope a lot of you will gain some perspective from and might be able to relate to. This part happens around 28 minutes into the podcast which we think is the most valuable content in the 45 minute interview.Nearly everyone's past is much different than you may assume.D-Ball thank you so much for your time and openness! You are the bomb BALL!
