This community is open to all who want to be involved. Threatened from within and outside by the rise of partisan hyper-polarization, authoritarian buy-in, disinformation and electoral interference, European democracy is under attack on all sides. As Europe needs to address citizens' sense of disenfranchisement, pathways to renewal are necessary. For the Democratic Odyssey consortium, part of the solution lies in creating a standing European People's Assembly that will become a core part of the institutional landscape of the European Union, made of citizens selected by lot, serving on a rotating basis. This project comes at an opportune moment. In the past five years, in Europe, there have been ten national assemblies and around 70 local assemblies on the topic of climate change alone. The EU itself took a huge leap with the Conference on the Future of Europe which integrated transnational, multi-lingual, sortition-based deliberation into the policy making process. The Conference planted a seed which the Democratic Odyssey wants to make flourish. As James Mackay, the project's coordinator, declared in a recent interview with European Alternatives: “we are not aiming at making a ‘perfect' assembly (whatever that would even mean). Our hope is more modest: to offer a “proof of concept” that, in the window between the EP elections but before the new Commissions convenes, can bring grassroots and institutional actors together to consider how citizens' participation can be institutionalized in the longer term.” source

Welcome to the podcast Dr. Joshua Berson, an independent researcher, author, and former Berggruen fellow who received his PhD in History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Josh has penned three novels, Computable Bodies, The Meat Question, and The Human Scaffold. https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520380493/the-human-scaffold https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/computable-bodies-9781472530349/ https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/meat-question We gush about our love of paper books and how we miss spending hours reading at bookstores. I ask how or if this affected the way he has written to his audience, knowing they most likely wouldn't be picking up the book in a store. This leads him into speaking about the process and thoughts put into his first book Computable Bodies. Next we touch on his second publication, the Meat Question, again diving into process and how the book formed over many years. He describes the goal of this book as to put the idea of what it means to be human and to consume animals in broader terms than just arguments for health and environment. Josh guides us through each step of inspiration, revision, and the review process in detail. Even describes what the face of meat looked like to him. Ultimately it was a paper he wrote “The Charisma of Meat” that sparked the substance of the book. The paper that inspired the Human Scaffold, his most recent publication was a 2004 paper by Joseph Henrick, and the discourses it launched. Josh enjoyed the technical questions it proposed, but wanted to examine empirical archaeological data from Tasmania for a new take. He also explains the takeaways he hopes readers get from reading the Human Scaffold. Politics, confidence in science and attitudes towards surveillance technology have led to very different outcomes between the East and the West when it comes to COVID-19. Many Asian countries have achieved containment of the virus while the West largely remains caught in a quagmire with no end in sight. What explains these differences? Cultural attitudes? Neo-liberalism vs. State capitalism? Bankrupt social welfare systems? Distrust of elites and institutions? I am joined by Nils Gilman of the Berggruen institute who helps us unpack the complexities and learn the lessons of our COVID successes and failures.

Across the globe, democratic governance is under assault. The rise of populism in the West, and the rise of China in the East, have stirred a rethinking of how democratic systems work—and how they failed their citizens by not addressing the dislocation of globalization and the rapid disruption of technological change. Yet, despite the increasing attention paid to the impact of globalism and digital capitalism, few concrete solutions that use technology and apply the realities of globalization have been offered to close the stark divide between the haves and the have-nots. Little has been done to repair the damaged social contract in countries around the world. The Berggruen Institute, the innovative California think tank, is answering this challenge with their new book, Renovating Democracy. Berggruen Institute founders Nicolas Berggruen and Nathan Gardels challenge us to conceive of an alternative framework for governance. To truly renovate our global systems, the authors argue for empowering participation without populism by integrating social networks and direct democracy into the system. They outline steps for harnessing globalization through positive nationalism at home while advocating for global cooperation—specifically with a Chinese partnership—to create a viable rules-based world order. In a special Saturday appearance at The Commonwealth Club, just weeks before critical elections in Europe where populists are pushing for more power, Berggruen, Gardels and Berggruen Institute board member Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, will discuss this new approach to governance and why such a forward-looking approach is so critically needed.
