Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Jan. 27, 2025. A stream restoration project transforms the Potomac River headwaters into a thriving habitat for brook trout…the Greenbrier Express train ride takes passengers through a winter wonderland of WV backcountry…and a new exhibit at the State Capitol Complex showcases WV wildlife art…on today's daily304. #1 – From BAY JOURNAL – A 19-year stream project that began in the nooks and crannies of mountain ravines in West Virginia has transformed the headwaters of the Potomac River into one of the most robust wild brook trout fisheries south of Maine and the Adirondacks. The restoration work, spearheaded by the nonprofit Trout Unlimited, is all the more inspirational as it comes at a time of considerable effort to save brook trout, the only trout native to the East Coast. Trout Unlimited began focusing on the eastern panhandle of West Virginia in 2005. It targeted a region of more than 1,000 streams with historic brook trout populations and springs that help keep water cold. Funding for the Potomac Headwaters Home Rivers Initiative has grown from $300,000 a year to more than $6 million annually. About half has come from federal sources and half from Trout Unlimited. To date, more than 400 farms in five counties have added best-management practices. More than 100 miles of streams have been restored. The 5-hour train trip from Cass to Durbin and back includes a ride on the historic Greenbrier Express steam engine, views of the Monongahela National Forest and its wildlife, and lunch during a layover in Durbin. The asking price is $1.795 million. The former Salt Sulphur Springs resort, known as “Old Salt” by its 19th century clientele, is tucked into a shady, narrow Monroe County valley through which spring-fed Indian Creek meanders, a few miles south of Union. Since the early 1800s, the house has provided lodging for guests drawn to Salt Sulphur's healing springs. A chapel, five cottages, a bathhouse, a spring house and a store building were also built of native stone and completed at around the same time. During “Old Salt's” pre-Civil War heyday, nearly 2,000 guests stayed at the Monroe County resort each summer--many of whom were southerners seeking to escape the season's heat. Today, it's the site of a historical restoration project that has been decades in the making. Before Europeans arrived, animals would have known the location of this spring in today's Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and this probably led Native Americans to the site as well. William Patterson was likely the first white settler to discover the spring, when he was chased into a thornbush by a protective mother bison drinking with her calf in the late 1700s. Over the following 150 years, the property would change hands many times. The Blue Sulphur Springs Resort, built in the 1830s, quickly became a vacation destination. Today, only the pavilion remains. The Greek Revival–style, columned structure was built around the spring itself, which flows up through a well in the floor. Once grand, by the time it was donated to the Greenbrier Historical Society by Mrs. Rebecca Fleshman Lineberry in 2013, the pavilion was falling apart. With the help of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, private sources, and a Kickstarter campaign, the restoration began. The Blue is now open to the public and available for events like family reunions, weddings, and photography shoots. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Wednesday, March 6, 2024. A Charleston distillery teams up with the WV EDA to improve its bottling efficiency. The WV chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association meets this month at the Culture Center. And WV Hive will host a training workshop for New River Gorge businesses…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EDA – Located in the heart of Charleston's historic West Side, the youthful Bullock Distillery has already become an integral part of the neighborhood. Bullock Distillery makes and bottles all kinds of spirits at their facility like bourbons, whiskeys, brandies, vodkas, gin, and more. In the front of the building, customers can wander around and shop. In the back, you'll find industrial machinery using different ratios of corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley, sourced from West Virginia farmers. But like any business, Bullock Distillery ran into road blocks along the way. One problem was their bottling process was slow and inefficient. A serious bottling machine is a considerable investment, but the business was able to get connected with the West Virginia Economic Development Authority. “It was a bad time for borrowing and that can be hard to finance through traditional means,” said co-foundeTighe Bullock. “The WVEDA was very understanding and responsive and they saw the potential for it to grow our business.” Now, Bullock Distillery is in talks to take on contract bottling from out of state, bringing business into West Virginia. They are significantly more efficient and are planning on increasing their workforce. Arts and Entertainment: Rancho Cordova is known as the "City of Events" and houses one of the best Art Complex in our region The MACC. The City has its own orchestra, Symphony D'oro, a Swing Dance Band, a Black Box Theatre, and features one of the largest July 4th fireworks displays in the region, and a whole slate of large outdoor events. Every month Director/ Curator of The MACC, Cheryl Gleason speaks to visual artists, musicians, actors, theatre groups as well as other notable influencers in the art scene in the Sacramento Region. It is not uncommon to hear people marvel at the explosion of the arts in Rancho Cordova, and for good reason. Where ever you go in our city, you are likely to experience a bit of art – whether painted on the side of a utility box, as music heard wafting through a grocery store or enjoyed during a casual wander through the Mills Station Arts and Culture Center. It's true that the arts have continued to grow in Rancho Cordova in so many ways that it is easy to forget that it has been only 10 years since this spark was ignited, and how the wonderful Marsha Mason has guided it to success. Marsha brought a background as a landscape architect with experience running large programs in the public sector to Rancho Cordova's newborn arts movement back in 2012. She was CEO of Sites Pacific, Inc., a landscape architectural firm specializing in public works projects and visual impact assessments. She taught landscape architecture courses as a lecturer at U.C. Davis. Marsha served as President of the Sierra Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, was a founder of WalkSacramento. Those skills all come together in 2012 as Marsha joined a small group of local artists to work with the Cordova Community Council to form what has become known as “Rancho Cordova Arts.” That year, the first City Hall exhibit launched with a fine art exhibit of local artists aptly named “Genesis.” Most artists are content – and prefer -- to simply work on their art, but Marsha is not like most artists. Understanding the importance of having an organization of people committed to an artistic future, she rolled up her sleeves to accomplish less glamourous foundational tasks like creating a non-profit organization, developing a website, creating a newsletter and focusing artistic energy in the community to produce memorable art events.

The training programs are available to residents, or residents of neighboring counties in other states, who are 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, have a driver's license, and can pass a drug test. This year's ornament was created and designed by West Virginia artists John DesMeules of Beckley, a renowned glassblower in residence at Tamarack, and Christie Saunders of Barboursville, a talented artist who is a juried member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society. DesMeules crafted a hand-blown round glass ornament swirled with gold and white accents, featuring a sandblasted area on the front, which served as a canvas for Saunders. The first lady said she worked with Saunders to conceptualize a heartwarming scene of two children beneath a Christmas tree, wrapped in a starry night with the words, “shine bright,” echoing a message of inspiration for all children. The limited number of 500 ornaments are priced at $35 each and are only available at the Tamarack Marketplace at The Culture Center in Charleston. Those interested in purchasing an ornament may call (304) 205-7911 and leave a voicemail with their name and phone number. Thomas Merton had, in his life, important experiences with women. His life and writings are impregnated by those feminine presences and influences who provoked strong reactions and emotions in his heart and mind. We will examine some aspects of his experience with the feminine, including his mother's premature death, the multiple girlfriends of his youth (whose names he would not even remember), as well as some friendships which were important in his Christian journey, such as Naomi Burton, Dorothy Day, and Catherine de Hueck. Merton's life as a monk was also configured by important feminine spiritual figures, including Mary, the mother of Jesus, Julian of Norwich, and others. We will also examine carefully the epiphany that represented Merton's love for the young nurse M., and conclude with a theological reflection about how Merton's experiences with the feminine influenced his writings and provide new insights into mystical experience and service to the Church. Maria Clara Lucchetti Bingemer holds a degree in Social Communication from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1975), a Master's degree in Theology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1985) and a PhD in Systematic Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University (1989). She is currently a full professor in the Department of Theology at PUCRio. For ten years she ran the Loyola Faith and Culture Center at the same University. For four years, she was an evaluator of graduate programs at the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). For six years, she was dean of the Center for Theology and Human Sciences at PUC-Rio. She has experience in the area of Theology, with an emphasis on Systematic Theology, focusing mainly on the following themes: God, otherness, woman, violence and spirituality. In the last few years, she has been researching and publishing on the thought of the French philosopher Simone Weil. Nowadays, her studies and research are primarily directed towards the thinking and writing of contemporary mystics and the interface between Theology and Literature.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Thursday, June 29 The “King Coal” documentary debuts at the Culture Center next month…Brad Smith is takingAscend West Virginia to a new level with two vertical programs…and ya gotta Regatta! The festival kicks off tomorrow in Charleston…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – “King Coal,” a feature-length documentary by West Virginia-raised and Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Curren Sheldon and Elaine McMillion Sheldon, makes its home-state premiere at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston next month. The West Virginia International Film Festival presents the event at 6 p.m. July 8. The event includes the 75-minute film screening, a live Q&A discussion with filmmakers, food, and music. The film is rated "Y" and is appropriate for families and children. A lyrical tapestry of a place and people, “King Coal” meditates on the complex history and future of the coal industry and the communities it has shaped. The film remixes present-day moments of life in the coalfields with archival footage and atmospheric invocations of the land to alchemize something new — a rare, nuanced depiction of the community. Smith. Smith, the former CEO and later executive chairman of Intuit and the current president of Marshall University, and his wife, Alys, developed the program to attract remote workers to the Mountain State. Since launching in April 2021, the program has brought 142 new residents to the state, who in turn have brought 172 others with them. There have also been five brand-new West Virginians born. The program's success has inspired a pair of what Smith calls “vertical programs.” First Ascent will help recent West Virginia college graduates find remote work and placement in remote worker programs, while offering them the same sort of outdoor-based incentives to continue living in the state. Another program, Military Ascent, is designed to attract those who served our country to move to West Virginia. More details of the “vertical programs” will be announced during the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce's 2023 Annual Meeting and Business Summit at the end of August.
