DOUGLAS JACKSON chats to Paul Burke about his new historical crime thriller Blood Roses, wartime Warsaw, series fiction, Ancient Rome, Caligula & The Angel of Death - Josef Mengele. BLOOD ROSES As the Nazis roll into Warsaw, a serial killer is unleashedâ€ĶSeptember 1939. A city ruled by fear. A population brutalised by restrictions and reprisals. Amid the devastation, another hunter begins to prowl. What are a few more deaths amid scores of daily executions?Former chief investigator Jan Kalisz lives a dangerous double life, forced to work with the occupiers as he gathers information for the fledgling Polish resistance. Even his family cannot be told his true allegiance. When the niece of a Wehrmacht general is found terribly mutilated, Jan links the murder to other killings that are of less interest to his new overlords. Soon, he finds himself on the trail of a psychopathic killer known as The Artist. But, shunned as a Nazi collaborator, can he solve the case before another innocent girl is taken?Douglas Jackson is the author of seventeen historical novels and mystery thrillers published by Transworld/PRH, including the critically acclaimed nine-book Hero of Rome series. He was born in Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders and now lives in Stirling. Originally a journalist by profession he rose to become Assistant Editor of The Scotsman before leaving to be a full-time writer in 2009.RecommendationsPaul Burke writes for Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover and the European Literature Network. Coming up as a teenager playing piano in Washington, D.C. gay bars, Tori Amos has always had a special connection to the LGBTQ community - particularly gay men. For this week's guests, 'Drive All Night - The Songs Of Tori Amos Podcast' co-host Efrain Schunior and Tori super-fan Kenny Franklin, that connection was only deepened with the release of her 1996 tour de force 'Boys For Pele'. Recorded primarily in a church in rural Ireland, the album combines her typically virtuoso piano playing with more experimental instrumentation and sometimes stark, sometimes expansive songs about casting emotional demons aside and reclaiming one's fire. Songs featured in this episode: Mr Zebra, Professional Widow (Armand's Star Trunk Funkin' Mix), Strange Little Girl, Cornflake Girl - Tori Amos; Sonata for Harpsichord Four Hands in C major - Mozart; Beauty Queen/Horses, Blood Roses, Father Lucifer, Professional Widow - Tori Amos; Violet - Hole; Marianne, Caught a Lite Sneeze, Caught a Lite Sneeze (Live sessions at West 54th 1998), Muhammed My Friend, Muhammed My Friend (Live feat. Maynard Keenan), Hey Jupiter - Tori Amos; Wish You Were Gay - Billie Eilish; Little Amsterdam, Doughnut Song - Tori Amos; Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover - Sophie B Hawkins; Vibeology - Paula Abdul; The Springtime of His Voodoo, Putting the Damage On - Tori Amos; The Tourist - Radiohead; Time (Live on David Letterman, 2001) - Tori Amos

Has social media made us move too fast and not smell the roses? Why do we not give the people here with their flowers while they can smell them? Does the negativity about people fuel us more than the positive? Are post humous albums/art for the better or are they a money grab? Tamara is a beautiful poet, writer, host of the #writestuff Twitter chat, and author of "The Shaping of an 'Angry' Black Woman" and "The Appalachian Terror Trail." She talks about her upcoming poetry series about resistance where poets share their raw, unfiltered thoughts and feelings about politics, which is inspired by the current U.S. political administration. Tamara wants to keep track of what's happening with the DT presidency. She's been worried about fellow creatives feeling exhausted from the political climate. "It's also important for poets to put our pens to being keepsakes of our history."  In addition, Tamara shares some of her own poetry from her book, "The Shaping of an 'Angry' Black Woman." We discuss what her words represent, the importance of writing yourself into existence, and her upcoming book called "Blood Roses and Honeysuckles." She shares about her upbringing, how she felt like a caged bird growing up, and her father's experience as a coal miner in West Virginia. I thank Tamara for being open to sharing about her experiences and gifting us with her words.  Are you a writer who is on Twitter? Join Tamara's #writestuff chat every Tuesday night at 9pm EST.  Did you enjoy this episode? Please share on social media. Let's get these stories out there!
