Arlington, Virginia writer Jack Nash is the Grand Prize Winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest earning him the Golden Pen Award trophy and $5,000. His winning story, "Son, Spirit, Snake," is published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40 which has an official release date of May 7th. Mr. Nash was honored along with the other winners in the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests on April 25th at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California. Jack Nash started writing when he became a speech and ghostwriter for a former head of state and Nobel Peace Prize winner. After his non-accredited work appeared in places like The New York Times, The Economist, and received standing ovations at the Nobel Foundation, he began to wonder what he could achieve if he turned towards fiction. He began seriously writing speculative stories in late 2021, and he received the call that he would be published in Writers of the Future one year plus one day after his first professional sale to The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. As a result, he is now strongly superstitious. Originally from the deserts of the American West, Jack now wanders the urban forests of Virginia with his wife and daughter. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 41st year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. Mark Leslie Lefebvre is the author of more than thirty books that include the award-winning humorous urban fantasy Canadian Werewolf series— hailed by readers as “the thinking man's werewolf”—and his award-nominated ghostly explorations such as Haunted Hospitals and Tomes of Terror. He is also the editor of more than ten anthologies that include titles in the Hugo Award Nominated Pulphouse Fiction Magazine and the Aurora Award-winning Tesseracts series, which showcases the best in Canadian speculative fiction. His work has been translated into French, Italian, and German. While choosing the shorter and easier-to-spell moniker of Mark Leslie for most of his writing, Mark leverages his full name for work in inspiring, informing, and assisting other authors. Mark's first short story was published in 1992, the same year he began in the book industry. He is a tireless advocate for libraries, bookstores, and other authors and has held the roles of president of The Canadian Booksellers Association, board member for BookNet Canada, chair of the Professional Advisor Committee for Sheridan College's Honours Degree in Writing and Publishing, and Director of Self-Publishing and Author Relations for Rakuten, Kobo, Inc. where he launched Kobo Writing Life. A pioneer in digital publishing, Mark has embraced both traditional and self-publishing routes and continues to look for new ways that technology and innovation can improve the industry for all authors. He has appeared on countless podcasts, television, and radio programs and has spoken on stages across Canada and the United States as well as in England, Germany, France, and Italy. Mark's weekly podcast, Stark Reflections on Writing and Publishing—launched in January 2018— takes an unflinching look at the reality of the publishing world with a balanced take on the pros and cons of various publishing routes. One of his greatest passions is helping writers navigate the bold new realms and opportunities that continue to unfold as the industry evolves. Welcome back to Outlook in 2022. We may be recording from home once again, as COVID-19 and specifically Omicron are prominent right now in Ontario, Canada, but we are nothing if not flexible. On the first new show of this new year, we begin by emphasizing why we (two blind siblings who've had organ transplants) are once again mostly isolating while this latest surge crests. We know what it's like to be in ICU, to have the other there, and this is our generation's world war, with the healthcare and essential workers as the soldiers, and we, once more, make our declaration on what we all need to do to work together on this to lighten the load for hospitals. We share a bit about our family's Christmas, a Christmas and New Year's that did not go as planned this year, with Covid finally getting a foothold with our loved ones. We had to alter holiday plans this time and again we made the best of it, but we're glad to be back for a whole new year of this podcast. We discuss those who've passed away in recent weeks: Desmond Tutu, Betty White, Sidney Poitierr, all legends in the things they achieved and the mark they all made, whether it was speaking out on homophobia in religion or the representation of women on the small screen or racial progress on the big. Right down to the loss of a musician, from PEI and band The East Pointers, Koady Chaisson, co-host Kerry's own age, gone too soon. From social justice and progress, to the entertainment and music world. In White's case, we air an old and forgotten commercial starring Betty as a blind woman, explaining to an ignorant cab driver why a guide dog is permitted in his cab, totally worth the listen. Also, it's January and we never let this first month of each new year go by without acknowledging braille and its importance in our lives and for the freedom and empowerment of blind people. This past weekend it was the first of four online events put on by Braille Literacy Canada (BLC), the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB), the CNIB Foundation, the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA), the National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS), and the Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired (PRCVI). The first of these events to be held was a panel entitled Looking Through the Crystal Ball: Innovations in Braille Technology for the 21st Century and Beyond and those on this panel represented a broad range of ages and backgrounds, but all recalling the braille technologies they remember fondly, those they use most now, and what they'd like to see in the future including more durable devices. Even subjects such as tactile graphics were discussed at length. So join us as we take Outlook into 2022 to see what we get up to, starting with a blog post/interview with BookNet Canada which was published on January 4th, inventor Louis Braille's birthday: https://www.booknetcanada.ca/blog/2022/1/4/how-to-improve-braille-accessibility-in-canada For more information on Braille Literacy Month and to register for the events discussed on this show: https://nnels.ca/world-braille-day BLC on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTmbEZuyVkV49OOo3SZ4c_g Check out Wintergreen by The East Pointers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P05YtS75gR4 And the Betty White commercial can be found here: https://www.seeingeye.org/assets/mp3/betty-white-taxi-cab-psa.mp3

Mary McAveney, Chief Marketing Officer at Open Road Integrated Media joins us this week on the BookSmarts Podcast. Mary has extensive expertise in marketing, strategy, and branding in the publishing industry, and now helps the Open Road team tackle marketing and discovery with data-driven tactics and a comprehensive understanding of direct-to-consumer marketing. In this episode, Mary and Joshua discuss the opportunities and challenges around book discovery. As sales have moved online, publishers have increasingly become more responsible for their own book discovery, and that can be a real challenge for publishers who have not tackled book discovery before. While the focus is often on the big titles that will make a splash, it is the debut authors and lesser-known titles that can suffer the most from discovery problems. As publishers take on that challenge, there are many opportunities available to them, but in essence book discovery comes down to building solid SEO on your website and creating and cultivating connections with your consumers. Mary shares some wonderful insights and suggestions to help publishers build their discovery platforms and cultivate those connections to increase visibility of their titles. BookNet Canada invites Canadian publishing superstars Allister Thompson, Leonicka Valcius, and Rachel Letofski to discuss the growing trend of adults purchasing Young Adult books for themselves, but misidentifying the target audience for those books as adult. According to a report put out by BookNet Canada entitled The Canadian Book Buyer 2015, consumers think they're buying 14% juvenile and 50% fiction, though 2014 purchasing trends indicate consumers are buying 38% juvenile and 31% fiction. Does this variance indicate that adults are trending towards juvenile without realizing it?
