August Sandberg hosts a 59 North 'Admiralty' roundtable, recapping the first sea trial on the new boat, which we did last week here in the English Channel. With gusts up to 55 knots, hail squalls, sunshine, big waves, fast reaching and breaking the things that 'needed' to break, the sea trial was a massive success and a hell of a lot of fun sailing with 9 of our friends and 59 North sailing staff! Independent private equity fund manager Metier has announced a $25-million investment into clean-energy company Broadreach Energy, which specialises in deploying renewable-energy and energy efficiency projects in the commercial and industrial (C&I) sectors of various African countries. The investment has been made through Metier’s second Sustainable Capital Fund, or MSC II, which has received $133-million in commitments to support renewable-energy, energy efficiency, water and waste-management investments in sub-Saharan Africa. Broadreach Energy is the first investment for MSC II. Broadreach Energy MD Adam Bekker says the company now has equity worth some R450-million, depending on exchange rates, to deploy into renewables and energy efficiency projects over the coming five years. “Our target is to fully deploy that allocation,” he tells Engineering News, adding that, together with the use of gearing, the funding should translate into a portfolio of over R1-billion. “We see that coming from a mix of project sizes, from smaller, easily replicable C&I projects to fully project-financed, utility scale projects.” Founded in 2014, Broadreach Energy currently has a portfolio comprising 17 separate solar photovoltaic (PV) and energy-efficiency projects, totalling around 7.5 MWp. “We are focused on C&I renewable-energy and energy efficiency projects, as well as small-scale utility projects. Predominantly we work with private offtakers, and the size of our projects range from about 80 kWp at the lower end, up to 20 MWp at the upper end.” The portfolio includes on-grid solar PV installations, hybrid systems that integrate solar PV systems with batteries and generators, as well as some off-grid solutions. Its energy efficiency solutions, meanwhile, include demand management and efficient lighting. Bekker says the company has adopted a flexible approach to power purchase agreements (PPAs), with offerings tailored to the needs of the client and the economics of the project. “Our PPAs range anywhere from five to 25 years and can either be on a take-or-pay, or pay-as-you-go basis. We also offer a solar-lease product, which is a lease-to-own arrangement.” The company’s current clients are located in South Africa and Namibia, but it is currently implementing its first project in Rwanda. “Our mandate is for sub-Saharan Africa, but our targets are South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We will take a measured approach to geographic expansion and currently our focus is on building out our portfolio in South Africa, Namibia and Rwanda.” Broadreach Energy is also keen to pursue more small utility scale projects of up to 20 MWp in size and it is also working on models and technologies with the aim of broadening its reach into the residential sector. “With Metier on board we have the ability to achieve our goal of building a leading African clean energy company,” he says. MSC II’s managing principal Marc Immerman says Metier looks forward to working with the Broadreach Energy team to grow their business and generate attractive renewable-energy investment opportunities targeting C&I customers across Africa. Broadreach, he notes, is one of the pioneers of PPA’s in the C&I solar PV sector in South Africa and has developed, advised on, or invested in projects totalling over 30 MW.

#233. Nat Philbrick is the author of ‘In the Heart of the Sea,’ the famous story of the whaling ship Essex, which sunk in the Pacific after being attacked by an angry sperm whale. This true-life story became the inspiration for Herman Melville’s classic ‘Moby Dick’, and at the time, was one of the most well-know sea stories. Of course Nat’s book, which recounted the true story from the perspective of the ship’s cabin boy, went on to become a Hollywood movie of the same name. Nat’s also a sailor, and actually lives on Nantucket, the whaling capital of the world in the 1700’s. I chatted with Nat about his career as a sailor and writer back in February. On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts. And also supported by Weems & Plath, and Broadreach.
#232. Paul & Sheryl Shard of course have the popular TV series Distant Shores, and for 25 years have been sailing the world on their boats of the same name and documenting their travels. Mia & I met them again in Toronto in January where they were excitedly awaiting the launch of their latest boat, a new Southerly 48. We sat down with them between seminars to talk about the design process, how Southerly are now owned by Discovery Yachts in the UK, what they wanted in their new design, and about how they’re getting ready and planning for the next phase of their cruising life by sailing trans-Atlantic and getting ready for the Pacific! On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts. And also supported by Weems & Plath, and Broadreach.
#231 Tom Cunliffe is one of the great sailor/writers of the past 30 years. His old-school style in both the boats he chooses to sail and the way he tells his story is fascinating. -- On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts. And also supported by Broadreach and Weems & Plath.
#230. Goran Rutgerson is the founder of the eponymous Rutgerson company, who design & fabricate rigging and deck hardward in Marstrand, Sweden. Goran grew up in a sailing family and went on to pursue his passion in the sport, rising all the way to the America's Cup ranks. Back in the day, he was good buddies with Peter Harken, and both Harken & Rutgerson evolved as businesses alongside one another on opposite sides of the Atlantic. I spoke to Goran at his office at the Rutgerson Factory in Marstrand in January. -- On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts. And also supported by Broadreach and Weems & Plath.
#228: Liz Karamavros is 59 North's first-ever apprentice. She came to us at the 2015 Annapolis Sailboat Show, and made such a good impression last we basically made up the apprentice position for her! Since then she's continued to carve out her own path towards her dream of professional ocean racing. Liz has recently signed onto her first big gig and is headed to the Caribbean to race onboard a Volvo 60! -- On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts. The podcast is also supported by Weems & Plath and Broadreach.
#227. Chris is a long-time ocean racing sailor, having competed in the Velux 5 Oceans Race, skippered a boat in the Clipper Race and later building his own charter-racing business called Spartan Ocean Racing. Chris & Andy met at the RORC Caribbean 600 in Antigua in 2016, Isbjorn's first attempt at the race, and finally got the chance to record a podcast in January 2018! -- On the Wind is Presented by Forbes Horton Yachts, and also supported by Weems & Plath and by Broadreach.
#223. Paul Exner is one of our best friends, and easily the best sailor I’ve ever sailed with. Paul is Isbjorn’s Racing skipper, and is the only person - besides mad dad - who I’ve trusted to sail Isbjorn offshore without me being aboard. He’s been a regular on the podcast, so if you don’t know his backstory - how he grew up as a Gringo living in Puerto Rico, went on to coach the racing team at the University of Wisconsin, had his own mapping business, built his Cape George 31 Solstice from a bare hull and eventually sailed it to the caribbean - listen to one of his past episodes on On the Wind. Paul & I talk today about surviving Hurricane Irma and how it’s changed the lives of his young family. -- On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts. And also supported by Broadreach, and Offshore Passage Opportunities.
#222. Carlton Goldthwaite is the visionary founder & owner of Broadreach, a North-Carolina based company that offers adventure travel and cultural immersion programs for students worldwide, a company very close to my heart - my first official captain’s job was in 2008, as a Broadreach skipper based out of French St Martin and co-leading three-week sailing & diving trips around the Leeward Islands. Carlton & I spoke in-person at the Broadreach HQ in Raleigh about his seaside childhood on the coast of New Jersey, his vagabonding experiences as a young adult, his stint on Wall Street as a junk bond trader, and the origins and evolution of Broadreach itself.
#221. It’s been a LONG time since I talked much about the business on here, and, now three years in (almost) and at the dawn of a new year, I feel like this is as good a time as any. I’m writing and recording this in real-time, by the way - as I write this, it’s just before 1000 SWE time on Tuesday January 2, the day this will release. Mia & I spent a lot of yesterday afternoon, January 1, reflecting on 2017 and planning ahead for 2018, across the business. The big question that we kept reminding ourselves of was the overall mission statement of 59 North. What, exactly, do we do, what do we WANT to do, and HOW do we accomplish that without getting sidetracked. -- On the Wind is Presented By Forbes Horton Yachts, longtime supporter of both 59 North in general and the podcast specifically. I’ve known Forbes for many years, and he indeed helped us buy Isbjorn back in 2015. Remember, Forbes can help you buy ANY boat on the market, not just ones he’s listing. To contact Forbes and start looking for your dream boat, visit forbesyachts.com - that’s F-O-R-B-E-S. forbesyachts.com. -- On the Wind is also supported by Broadreach and Offshore Passage Opportunities.
#184: Olly Cotterell is one of the youngest Clipper Race skippers ever, sailing to a podium position in the 2013-2014 edition of the RTW race onboard OneDLL. He currently skipper’s the prototype, foiling racing yacht ‘Maverick,’ which recently won her class in the RORC Trans-Atlantic Race. Olly & I have a connection in that we’ve both worked for Broadreach. We met up to record this episode in person in Antigua, ahead of the Caribbean 600. Olly has an amazing story that includes growing up on a sailboat in Bermuda, working up the ranks as an RYA instructor, surfing at 35 knots in the Southern Ocean in the Clipper Race and much more. -- On the Wind is presented by Weems & Plath. Join Andy & Mia on an offshore passage aboard Isbjorn, their classic S&S Swan 48 at 59-north.com/offshore.
#162. Moxie Marlinspike is a legend in tech. As a programmer, he literally wrote the code that enables everyday encryption. He’s friendly with Edward Snowden and was recently feature in WIRED magazine. Moxie, though, is a sailor at heart. I worked together with him at Broadreach way back in 2008. We caught up to talk about his unique sailing philosophy, his movie ‘HOLD FAST’ & his rise in the tech world. If you’ve followed the news even tangentially, you’ll have heard about encryption. Remember Edward Snowden? His revelations about the FBI’s mass collection of data from everyday Americans set off a wave of stories centered around personal privacy & national security. Today’s guest is at the center of that debate - Moxie Marlinspike, almost single-handedly invented everyday encryption, and his code was recently implemented in WhatsApp and Facebook’s new ‘secret’ Messenger service. If you’re interested in this sort of thing at all, I highly recommend watching the documentary about Snowden called Citizen Four, and reading the recent WIRED Magazine profile on Moxie, which you can easily find on Google, or I’ll link it in the show notes. -- This episode is sponsored by Forbes Horton Yachts. Visit his online inventory and get in touch to buy or sell your next boat at forbesyachts.com.
#147. is a fun one. Back in March, I had planned to do another podcast with Matt Rutherford to get an update on what he’s doing with his Ocean Research Project. As it were, Paul Exner was also in town to speak at a seminar Mia and I hosted in Annapolis. AND, ship’s pilot Mark Baummer was around, and had asked me for some advice to help him plan a passage to Bermuda on his Gemini catamaran. So, the inklings of an idea sprang to life - why not get the three of these guys together, all former podcasts guests, and have a little roundtable chat? So that’s exactly what we did. Matt invited us over to the house he’s taking care of in Eastport, and we sat around the coffee table in the living room. I got things going with Matt, and the hope was that everyone would kind of just jump in at points and start talking on their own. I was not let down. After a while, Matt, Paul & Mark just kinda started needing out on each other, and MAN was it fun to see! The longer the episode goes, the less you’ll hear my voice, as I just sat back and smiled and watched! We covered an array of topics, from Matt’s latest adventures, to Mark’s new boat, thoughts on electronics and radar, why Mark as a ship captain thinks required AIS might actually be a bad thing on the Chesapeake and much much more! This is a long and meandering episode, but I think you’ll agree it’s definitely worth your time! — A quick update on Isbjorn before we get to the show. Thanks to our good friend Pam Wall, she’s safely docked on a canal in Ft. Lauderdale until our trip north which starts May 18. The Cuba passage was a highlight of my sailing and traveling career - and I promise I’ll have an entire episode dedicated to that very soon - and it was great fun to share it with our awesome crew. We have one spot left on the Annapolis-Lunenburg passage from July 1-8, so check out the details on that at 59-north.com/offshore. We also just opened another spot for the Caribbean 600 race next February, so if you want to ‘level up’ and do some serious ocean racing, check out 59-north.com/oceanracing for details on that. Alright, with that, enjoy an awesome roundtable chat with me, Matt Rutherford, Mark Baummer & Paul Exner! -- This episode is sponsored by Broadreach, my former employer and one of the coolest sailing jobs I’ve ever had. Aside from being an amazing place to send your kids for an adventurer summer (listen up parents!), they’re on the lookout for skippers and mates to work the upcoming summer season out of St. Martin. Contract length varies from two to three months starting in early June through early to late August. Go to broadreachstaff.com to complete the initial job application! #54. This week I read an essay I wrote for Broadreach's blog about how sailing brings you back to the world as it was meant to be for humans. It's more philosophical than practical, but hopefully is inspiring! What did you think?
#22. Ashley Rogers is an old friend of mine from my Broadreach days, when I worked out of St. Martin on liveaboard sail-and dive-training expeditions. Ashley was a SCUBA instructor and we got to know each other at Broadreach's 'Pad' during the 2009 summer. Though she was living and teaching diving aboard sailing boats - and actually sailing between isalnds and dive sites - she hated it! Originally from Guatemala, Ashley now lives in New Zealand and spoke to me via Skype about how she got into sailing after reading the classic book 'Dove' by Robin Lee Graham, and decided she wanted to give it a go. Now she's preparing her boat for the 2018 edition of the Solo Trans Tasman race, a big event held every four years that sees sailors cross the Tasman Sea from New Zealand to Queensland, Australia. The 2014 edition of the race just got underway on April 22, so folow the fleet here! Ashley will be only the 5th woman to ever attempt the feat. Follow her on her Facebook page, The Solo Challenge.
