Erik R. Scott (Associate Professor of History, University of Kansas) gave a lecture on "Defectors: How the Illicit Flight of Soviet Citizens Built the Borders of the Cold War World" on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 4:00 pm in 206 Ingraham Hall, 1155 Observatory Drive. About the lecture: Defectors fleeing the Soviet Union seized the world's attention during the Cold War. Their stories were given sensational news coverage and dramatized in spy novels and films. In contrast to other migrants, defectors were pursued by the states they left even as they were eagerly sought by the United States and its allies. Taking part in a risky game that played out across the globe, defectors sought to transcend the limitations of the Cold War world. Recently published by Oxford University Press, Defectors: How the Illicit Flight of Soviet Citizens Built the Borders of the Cold War World, is the first history of defection on a global scale. The book charts a global struggle over defectors that unfolded among rival intelligence agencies operating in the shadows of an occupied Europe, in the forbidden border zones of the USSR, in the disputed straits of the South China Sea, on a hijacked plane 10,000 feet in the air, and around the walls of Soviet embassies. Surprisingly, the competition for defectors paved the way for collusion between the superpowers, who found common cause in regulating the spaces through which defectors moved. Disputes over defectors mapped out the contours of modern state sovereignty, and defection's ideological framework hardened borders by reinforcing the view that asylum should only be granted to migrants with clear political claims. Although defection all but disappeared after the Cold War, this innovative work shows how it shaped the governance of global borders and helped forge an international refugee system whose legacy and limitations remain with us to this day. About the speaker: Erik R. Scott is Associate Professor of History and director of the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at the University of Kansas. He is the author of Familiar Strangers: The Georgian Diaspora and the Evolution of Soviet Empire (OUP, 2016) and editor of The Russian Review.

At the end of the show a question from Andrew Anderson Recommendations Stuart: ‘Poor Things' From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter's protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by legendary director Ridley Scott, the film captures Bonaparte's relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed. https://www.napoleon.movie/home/ My Rembrandt (Doc) Aristocrats cherish, experts rule, art dealers hunt, collectors crave and museums battle for Rembrandt. 350 years after the grand master of intimacy's death, entire nations are more than ever obsessed with his paintings. The suit that Rothko's daughter brought against the executors and Marlborough rocked the art world with its shocking revelations of corruption in the international art trade: from the deceptions practiced on Rothko when he was alive to the scandals after his death involving conspiracies and cover-ups, double dealings and betrayals, missing paintings and manipulated markets, phony sales and laundered profits, forgery and fraud. https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-legacy-of-mark-rothko/lee-seldes/9780306807251 MARK ROTHKO Exhibition - Fondation Louis Vuitton The Fondation Louis Vuitton presents the first retrospective in France dedicated to Mark Rothko (1903-1970) since the exhibition held at the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1999. In this episode of the "Entitled Millennials" podcast, Double D sits down with friend and comrade Colton of the YouTube channel AbcadeazCoffee to discuss the War in Ukraine and to ruminate on what the world may look like at the end of the proxy war in Ukraine. Colton is an autodidact on the war in Ukraine as well as other geo-political topics. He has recently elected to begin producing independent left media content. You can find his channel here:https://www.youtube.com/@UCMqymXCF8Ll... Please stop by and spread that Indie Media love!Double D and Colton discuss the brazen media lies surrounding the war in Ukraine, citing rehashed footage from past wars, the use of combat simulator video, and false narratives about the course of the war. They discuss also how the U.S. government lies, time after time, about their involvement in conflicts, as well as a complete aversion to proper diplomacy. The pair discuss the political climate in Russia, the nature of the Putin regime, and they ruminate of political opinions within Russia towards the war, touching on the anti-war protests, demographic shifts, and statements from U.S. officials which have gradually changed the perspectives of many Russians regarding the war.Moving in to the flesh of the discussion, Colton walks viewers through the course of the war, highlighting events, strategies, shifting geo-political concerns, and more. He outlines the nature of Russia's calculated retreat, past attempts at peace negotiation, as well as Ukraine's counter-offensives. Moving on, Colton ruminates on the current "ceasefire" noting that the counteroffensives failed to achieve their objectives, and suggesting that Russia is beginning to shift its war effort. Colton notes the mobilization effort in Russia, and the pair discuss that current Russian military objectives suggest a "greasing of the wheels" for what many analysts are claiming may be a "Spring Offensive."The two go on to discuss where this new Spring Offensive may lead, while also ruminating on what the war as a whole may lead to. The two discuss several eventualities that either escalate the war in to a global conflict, or that bring the war to an end at the peace table.Rounding off the video, the two discuss what revelations have been made as a result of this proxy war, noting the splintering of the global economy, the clear hollowing out of the U.S. and European economies, and the general shift towards a more regional, bipolar, or multipolar world.Closing the video, the two stray into more personal topics, reflecting on the ways in which Late Empire and End Stage Capitalism have shaped their own lived experiences. Thanks for watching everyone, don't forget to like, subscribe, comment, and bang the notification bell! From Biden's recent speech calling half of the country and more "extreme" to the collapse of the supply chain, energy grid, economy and civil discourse, it has never been more clear where the direction of the world is heading. Collapse. It just happens that this crisis is perfect for the globalists who already have a plan in place. The Great Reset. You'll own nothing and allegedly be happy. Except you won't be happy. You'll have sold your soul for convenience out of desperation after the very people who give you the so-called "solution" have ruined your life, your hopes, your dreams, your wealth. In this video, we break down the calls for civil war worldwide as protests heat up and political statements get more and more divisive. For this Bonus Episode we take to the sky with Co-Host Matt Borders as we look at the often romantized aspect of the the First World War, the Air War! We've trudeged through the mud and the blood of the trenches in both Season 2 and 3, but now we will look at some of the most iconic and unique flying machines ever to grace the sky.Prior to soaring though, we had to climb. As such we will take a few minutes to set the stage, looking at early uses of air power in both the US and Europe prior to the First World War. You will no doubt recognize some of the names, the Wright's and Curtis for example, but many others may be new to you. All of this building towards the explosion of aerial innovation and the tragedy of modern warfare that occured in World War One! Lesson is... flee to Argentina or Paraguay if you want to avoid extradition and buy a farm!Dominic combines two of our previous episode themes 'Twins' & 'Human Experimentation' to create one hell of a story for this week's offering. We are going back in time to one of human history's most horrendous wars.War World 2 saw Josef Mengele, also known as the Angel of Death, commit unimaginable acts of pain, torture, murder and sadistic experiments. This one is not for the faint of heart.
This incredible radio novella is a science fiction futurist timeline of the 21st century and the events of what will be known as both World War 3 and The Third Human Civil War. Created by Peacekeeper76 on YouTube over a decade ago. This is a chillingly realistic and now obscure predictive programming just like the Fallout Great War Timeline. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/beyondtopsecrettexan/support
When we get to Revelation 20, John has taken us through the Tribulation and the return of Jesus Christ in chapters 4 to 19. Now John is sharing with us about the one-thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ. He tells us that both the saints who were martyred in the Tribulation by the Antichrist, and all those who are part of the first resurrection, will reign with Christ. Remember the “first resurrection” includes everyone who has repented of their sins and by faith believed in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ in both the Old and New Testaments. Daniel the prophet wrote about this resurrection in Daniel 12:2. Jesus also spoke about these two resurrections in John 5:28. Today we want to talk about the purpose of the Millennium. For many centuries, man has dreamed of a "golden age," a "utopia" in which the human race will be free from war, sickness, and even death. Men have tried to achieve this goal on their own and have failed. Remember the League of Nation that was formed at the end of World War 1. They hoped that their efforts would bring lasting peace and that War World 1 was the “war to end all wars”. As we obviously know today, that was not the case. There have been multiple wars since then and even today a terrible war is raging in Ukraine. It is only when Jesus Christ comes back as the Prince of Peace and reigns on David's throne that the “kingdom will come” and the earth be delivered from the oppression of Satan and sin. One of the first purposes of the Millennium Kingdom is to fulfill both the prophesies and the promises that are through out the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments. The most important aspect of this fulfillment is that Jesus Christ Himself will sit on the throne in this kingdom in fulfillment of dozens of prophesies. Mary was told by the angel Gabriel in Luke 1:31-33, “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end." Isaiah the prophet saw this kingdom as clearly as any prophet in the Old Testament. He hardly starts writing his book and you read about the coming kingdom of Jesus Christ in Isaiah 2:1-5: “The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD'S house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, "Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths." For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. O house of Jacob, come and let us walk In the light of the LORD.” It is interest to note that the last part of these verses are engraved on a granite wall just across from the United Nations Building in New York. The world wants peace but do not care to have the God of the Bible who alone can bring peace. My friend, not only will Jesus Christ bring peace to the world one day in His Kingdom, but He alone can bring peace to our troubled hearts today! (Romans 5:1) Jesus promised: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). God bless!
War has catapulted energy security to the very top of the political agenda. Russia's invasion of Ukraine was a geopolitical quake, the shockwaves of which will be felt for decades. What are the consequences of the war for commodities? How can governments, companies and investors respond to the changing energy landscape? How will they react to investment opportunities opening up even as costs rise at unprecedented rates? On the podcast: we discuss how the war has reshaped the commodities world. Energy trade flows are being transformed, investment in new LNG supply looks more compelling and the pace and, crucially, cost of the energy transition is changing. Joining regular host Liz Dennett are Derek Brower, US Energy Editor at the Financial Times, Massimo Di-Odoardo, Vice President, Gas and LNG Research at Wood Mackenzie, and Ann-Louise Hittle, Vice President, Oils Research at Wood Mackenzie. Wrapping up 2021, the Good Brothers are reviewing Justice League episodes all month, kicking off with the Season One episode "War World Part 1 & II." The hosts talk memories of having this on video tape to where the plot lets the rest of the episode down and the intricacies of the brutal fights throughout both parts. Also discussed is why Green Lantern and Hawkgirl are made to look like gullible idiots, a soundtrack with a few audible Easter Eggs and nods to prior shows and why Eric Roberts portrayal of Mongul makes you root to see him get his comeuppance at the finish of the story. Lastly, they discuss whether this episode is pivotal to a rewatch of the DCAU based on the elements of John & Shayera's budding romance or if this episode deserves to be dropped onto a remote trash planet.
