As part of the Burning Man Project's Multiverse, my camp, Burners Without Borders offered a speaker series projected into the Infinite Playa. I had the pleasure of interviewing a former guest and friend of the show, Jamie Wheal about his vision for Black Rock City’s future. On the show, we talk about the future of Burning Man in the digital realm and how our culture should evolve if Black Rock City returns. We discuss how to dial in hedonism and service and also the thorny issue of divisiveness in our country. We end with one of my favorite topics, the importance of shenanigans at Burning Man. Jamie is the bestselling author of Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, the Navy SEALs, and Maverick Scientists Are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work and the founder of the Flow Genome Project. He is my favorite critic of spiritual materialism and the Psychedelic Renaissance. The episode we recorded last autumn is one of the most popular on the show. Huge thanks to my campmates at Burners Without Borders for putting up this virtual speaker series in the 11th hour! In this global crisis, financial uncertainty affects us all, especially those whose livelihoods are based on gatherings like festivals and other events. Today on Life is a Festival, my friend and fellow member of Burners Without Borders, Nick Farr CPA, will help us navigate the byzantine networks of government programs so we can get the resources we need now, and prepare for the future. On the show Nick shares the immediate steps we can take for financial resilience, specifically how to get money from the government including Economic Impact Payments, unemployment benefits, and loans. We talk about how communities can support each other with initiatives like the Bay Area Safety Net Fund. We discuss what people with privilege can do, like redirecting institutional giving and support like the #sharemycheck initiative. Finally once we have some ground under our feet, long term resiliency means switching our mindset from disaster response to birthing a new way of being. Nick is an accountant at Kroon & Mitchell in Grand Rapids and practices in New York, Michigan and California. He as spent 20 years in disaster response including as Volunteer Coordinator at the Alvaro Obregon 286 building collapse site during the 2017 Mexico City Earthquake. He is also the author of The Long Disaster, a manifesto of preparedness written in collaboration with the BWB Spring Summit at Fly Ranch in 2019. Conditions are changing daily making some details in the show already obsolete. Therefore Nick has generously offered to create and respond to a thread in the Life is a Festival Facebook group to answer any questions you may have. Because in times of crisis, resilience ultimately comes from community. This episode goes out to all the healthcare workers in the fight against coronavirus. If you are an EMT, a doctor, nurse, or hospital janitor… bless you! Richard “Wolverine" Gottlieb is the king of festival medicine. His company RGX Medical manages 30-40 festivals per year including favorites like Lightning in a Bottle, Envision, and Desert Hearts. RGX emphasizes a harm reduction approach and works closely with the Zendo Project psychedelic peer support to provide nonjudgmental, compassionate care for all festival attendees. Given the current state of the world and the enormous burden on our healthcare system, I wanted to talk to Wolverine about what we civilians can do to support in the current crisis. At this point we’re all staying home, social distancing, and washing our hands… you’re all doing that right? Well, what else can we do? Wolverine and I discuss how to avoid injuring yourself and what to do if you get hurt. We talk about managing mental health and how to hold space for others. We discuss donating personal protective gear (ie those extra N95 masks you bought but never used at Burning Man this year), which you can do that through Burners Without Borders. Burners Without Borders (BWB) is a community organization within the Burning Man Project that works in disaster relief and civic works projects in communities around the world. From building composting toilets at Standing Rock, to permaculture action at Hoover Elementary in West Oakland, to building a Youth Center in the Calais refugee camp, BWB is Burning Man at its finest. Christopher Breedlove is the Director of Civic Activation at the Burning Man Project where he oversees the Burners Without Borders, Regional Network, and Civic Arts programs. Hailing from Chicago, he is an also an artist, educator, and an inspiring public speaker. On the show we talk about Hurricane Katrina and the origin of BWB. We get into the technicalities of how a theme camp became an NGO. We talk about Standing Rock, Calais, and Uhuru Land, a refugee camp in Uganda. We discuss the Burning Man Sustainability Road Map for 2030 and an initiative to create an asset map for Burning Man infrastructure around the world. The through line of this conversation is the value of service: how to get involved, how to support each other, and how not to burn out. Above all, how can we weave service into our lives for the betterment of our communities, our friends, and our own mental health? Today’s episode is dedicated in loving memory to Affinity Mingle. Affinity, was a beloved member of the Burning Man community, a dear friend, and a huge supporter of this podcast. It is fitting that an episode about service would be dedicated to Affinity, as she was so committed to volunteerism that Burning Man’s first award for volunteers was named after her and awarded to her at the Artumnal Gathering in 2012. "Breaks" encompasses a wide spectrum of music out east, and Shakey and Barney iLLer have tried to cover a lot of that territory in this week's mix -- with funky breaks, funky house, Baltimore club, ghetto breaks, ragga, hip-hop, rare groove, and jungle. DJ Shakey is a professional DJ and staple of the Manhattan and Brooklyn underground scenes. Burning Do-Gooders is an LA-based collective of DJs, promoters, artists, performers, musicians and activists dedicated to putting the creative and constructive spirit of the Burning Man community to work in the so-called "real world." They are affiliated with Burners Without Borders, a group that brings together like-minded Burners to work for positive change in communities that need our help, hope, financial support and elbow grease. The first project of the Burning Do-Gooders is an event entitled "Good One" to benefit My Friend's Place, a day center for homeless youth in Hollywood that provides meals, job training, health and social services — and classes in juggling and stilt-walking. The event took place on Sunday, July 30th at the Mor Bar (a burner based business) located in Santa Monica, California and features DJs, live entertainment and a silent auction. Future projects for Burning Do-Gooders may include other fundraiser events, art auctions, beach clean-ups — you name it! In fact, if you have any ideas for future Do-Gooder activities, let them know. Especially if you can help us make it happen. Today's guests are DJ Poncho Andy, the founder of Burning Do-Gooders and Katie Bone, the Director of Special Events of My Friend's Place.

Summer is heating up and BM is fast approaching. That means fundraising is well underway for many theme camps and art projects. Today's guests Diva Danielle and Poncho Andy dj'd at a benefit for the Ouija Says Ouija Board and the Cloud 9 Art Car (which was featured in last week's episode). Specifically, the benefit was entitled "The Incredible 2nd Annual Costume Exchange" in which those in attendance had an opportunity to trade playalicious playwear and costumes for years' past. Our first guest, DJ Diva Danielle is raising funds for Gnome Camp, her theme camp at Burning Man. She¹s done a special mix that follows her interview in this podcast. Our second guest, DJ Poncho Andy, has headed up Burning Do-gooders, which likened to the LA regional chapter of Burners Without Borders. Poncho has also created a special mix for this podcast as well.
