As the author of "The Rise of Superman" and co-founder of the Flow Genome Project, Steven Kotler is one of the world's leading experts on ultimate human performance. In this Talk, he provides a tour of the current research focusing on "flow states”, or an optimal state of consciousness where we both feel our best and perform our best. Researchers now know that flow sits at the heart of almost every athletic championship, underpins most major scientific breakthroughs, and accounts for significant progress in the arts. In business, its impact has been substantial. Coders in flow built the internet; video game designers in flow built the video game industry. "Flow state percentage" has been called the most important management metric for building great innovation teams. As a result of this, an increasing number of companies have put the cultivation of flow at the heart of their philosophies. So what is this mysterious state? How does it work its magic? And if this really is the secret to ultimate human performance, how can we get more of it in our personal and professional lives? Stay tuned to find out! Originally published in April of 2014. For our own mental health, we must occasionally disconnect from the world and reconnect to ourselves and to each other. Humans are highly conscious of social status. We are tribal primates who are wired to seek the "silverback" among us. This makes us prone to cult-like behavior. This is especially true today with the rise of social media influencers, like those on Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. But the question is: can cults actually be an ethical and positive force for good? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Jamie Wheal: Jamie Wheal is the author of the global best-seller and Pulitzer Prize-nominated Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, Navy SEALs and Maverick Scientists are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work and the founder of the Flow Genome Project, an international organization dedicated to the research and training of ultimate human performance. It's become a tradition for us now. In this episode of the Harvest Series podcast, we welcome Jamie Wheal, the author of "Recapture the Rapture," a renowned expert on peak performance, neuroscience, and flow states, and the Executive Director of the Flow Genome Project, to introduce the theme of our 8th season summit. The last theme was Radical Connection. You will soon find out why the biblical brothers Cain and Abel (present in many religions) are in this podcast's title. This episode runs longer than usual, but Jamie's insights were so profound and evolutionary that we couldn't bear to cut any part of the interview or split it into two parts. He provides so much information that I usually have to pause when listening to this episode to fully digest what he says!Join us as Jamie Wheal takes us on a journey through the story and future of our civilization, viewed through the lens of connection.Episode Breakdown:[2:01] - Jamie explains why the theme Radical Connection was chosen for this 8th season of the Harvest Summit in Kaplankaya. Why do we feel so disconnected today?[6:05] - Jamie cites the ancient social technologies we left behind. But how do we fight against the inevitable frictions emerging from the communities?[10:00] - Are demagogues and populists responsible for us feeling disconnected, along with social networks?[15:00] - Jamie talks about migration and humans being always on the move.[20:14] - We are going back to a multipolar world. What are the 3 main forces driving disconnection: 1. Tribalism 2. Colonialism 3. Capitalism.[28:00] - We are used to thinking that technology will solve our resource problems.[33:00] - How can we deal with these situations where if we want to raise the standard of living of Americans, we would need the resources of 3 to 4 planets Earth. Reduction is politically untenable.[35:00] - We are in a case of obligate adaptation: how to recalibrate our carbon consumption to standards of living that meet our needs. How do we become healthier and more connected?[43:00] - I'm trying to get hope from maybe the next generations. Jamie doesn't want to put all the effort into the kids.[45:00] - What about fixing people's consciousness? Yes, if it doesn't make us just self-indulgent.[54:42] - Jamie is writing a book: if an anthropologist from space came down to Earth and checked what was happening, interviewing the wisest ones, what is going on? What are the drivers of evolution?[57:49] - "Evolution (life on this Earth) is nothing more and less than an amoral and indifferent novelty engine. Its purpose is to create and generate options and possibilities. 90% crashes, 10% persist. That's how you get new and different." Out of these different things comes complexity. Some complex things are not beautiful, like cancer, but some things are good, true, and beautiful. Let's protect them. But it needs energy."[1:00:00] - The story of human civilization has been nothing more than a hunt for ever hotter fire to heat ever more interesting star stuff.[1:08:00] - What are the tools we have in our hands? We have seasons and contrasts, spinning, the moon... They are Earthshots giving us hope.Next episode will be with Nic Warner, a transformational coach, about how boys can become men. In today's episode I chat with one of my favourite thinkers and writers: Jamie Wheal. I got to know Jamie through our mutual interest in, well, the hot mess that our civilization seems to be going through, and I knew he'd make a great guest for Win-Win because he's one of those rare folks who can combine both intellectual rigor and a deep love for physicality and nature. So as well as discussing game theory and the meaning crisis and all that good stuff, we also get into his discoveries studying human "flow states" - he's the co-founder of the Flow Genome Project, as well as the author of the bestselling books Stealing Fire and Recapture the Rapture. In this episode, Kyle interviews author of Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death In a World That's Lost Its Mind; speaker; and Founder of the Flow Genome Project, which researches and trains on improved human performance. This episode – the last of the many recorded at Psychedelic Science 2023 – may ruffle some feathers, as Wheal is very outspoken and opinionated, focusing on what he spoke about at the conference: the pitfalls of the psychedelic movement. While his outlook is negative, he speaks with humor, and these shadow aspects are issues we need to be talking about: how the nature of capitalism and returning profits to shareholders affects the concept of set and setting; how easy it is to prescribe ketamine and the puppy mill clinics popping up everywhere; how innovators are racing to the bottom to get ahead; the designer drug epidemic likely leading us to a Prozac Nation 2.0; digital narcissism, Instagram “Shamans,” and the dangers of cults; chemists trying to take the experience out of the drug; the overuse of psychedelics creating super egos; and much more. While he believes the hype and excitement of the psychedelic renaissance is leading us towards a trough of dissolution and that people aren't turning their amazing experiences into net positives anywhere near enough, he believes that fewer people using psychedelics less often and more intensely – with initiatory practices, intentions, integration, and honest self-reflection – will help us all climb out of our egos and move towards a healthier society. There is hope, but we need to honestly look at all the shadow aspects in order to move towards it. Click here to head to the show notes page.
Today, we have an inspiring interview with Jamie Wheal, a renowned researcher, speaker, and author who delves into human potential and peak performance. As the co-founder of the Flow Genome Project, Jamie is on a mission to equip individuals with the tools to reach optimal states of consciousness and unlock their highest performance capabilities. His extensive work extends to collaborating with prestigious organizations such as the US Navy, Google, and Red Bull to develop transformative programs. Jamie is the author of bestsellers like "Stealing Fire" and "Recapture the Rapture". During the 7th season of Harvest, he served as the co-curator, with the theme of "Radical Hope", and will explain what it means to him. Join us as we dive deep into his insights and wisdom.Harvest is an event produced by Athena Advisers and Capital Partners[3:43] Jamie embarks on a fascinating journey into Turkey's historical richness, emphasizing how it birthed and touched numerous ancient milestones. The Aegean coast, steeped in history, serves as the backdrop for Harvest, a revival of the ancient academies. People would converge at symposiums, sip wine, engage in philosophy, and indulge in spa-like experiences—resonances of the past awaiting excavation.[10:50] Harvest's international gathering echoes the captivating cross-pollination at the nexus of Europe and Asia throughout history.[14:44] Beyond activating minds, Harvest attendees seek to experience and feel through music and breathwork, embracing tradition.[16:12] Jamie highlights the theme "Radical Hope": a commitment to believe in an unseen future.[22:00] Maintaining optimism across decades is a vital social technology. Losing hope limits our adaptability; we must make room for grace.[28:39] Jamie explores the concept of being ancestors to future civilizations, drawing inspiration from the unique culture of Burning Man—an ancient yet futurist punk-rock blend.[31:00] Delving into Buddhism with his wife Julie, Jamie reflects on lessons from renowned scholars Bob Thurman and Thupten Jinpa. Change often involves non-violent and forceful approaches, leading to messy and tragic situations and moments of inspiration.[35:57] Jamie shares the "Harvest of the Day," a source of hope for him amid life's complexities.Next week, we will release Dr Julie Holland interview in Kaplankaya. In this episode, Kimberly and Jamie discuss his book “Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death In a World That's Lost Its Mind.” Jamie gives an anthropological perspective of human history across millennia to trace how we ended up today with economic, climate, technological, mental health, and other crises. He discusses how all of our social media and culture wars are missing the mark on the actual crises to our planet, and if we don't address it, it will destroy us all. His solution for processing this grief is by making intentional choices toward hope, and moving from hyper-individualism of our times to supportive, intergenerational communities. Today we are joined by Jamie Wheal, who comprised a full one-third of the subjects covered on our prior "Sensemaking Cubed" episode also featuring Daniel Schmachtenberger and Jordan Hall. Jamie has kindly taken advantage of our standing offer of a right to reply to all podcast subjects and here is our conversation in its entirety. As well as being a sometime interlocutor with Daniel and Jordan, Jamie is an author of books such as Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, Navy SEALs and Maverick Scientists are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work and Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death In a World That's Lost Its Mind. He's the founder of the Flow Genome Project, an organisation that aspires to train ultimate human performance, and does leadership seminars and wilderness excursions with many famous organisations such as Deloitte, Red Bull, Google, Lululemon, Facebook, TD Ameritrade, Nike, and Goldman Sachs. So, the three of us get into it a bit about that sensemaking about sensemaking video, but pretty quickly move into the issue of making sense of things more broadly, as it's transpired with fraught issues such as COVID; both in the popular social media space, and within the 'blue church' of academia. From what we knew of Jamie, we expected to have a pleasant chat with him, and as you'll hear: it was a pleasant chat! Even if our worldview and understanding of things diverged a fair bit, there were a number of things we could agree on as well. A big thumbs-up to Jamie for taking our (relatively scathing) coverage of the infamous video with the best of grace and, in the best tradition of what the IDW purports to do, be willing to have a frank public chat with a couple of blokes who have been highly critical of some of the people and ideas he's (somewhat) aligned with. Our intros and outros are - as usual - quite indulgent, so be sure to take advantage of those bookmarks if you want to skip straight to the interview proper.Enjoy!LinksMike Duncan's Revolutions PodcastBeyond Synth Podcast (Chris is a guest on ep 342)Gizmodo fact-check on Elon's claims about AppleJamie Wheal @ Linkedin Feature on Jamie Wheal in the Texas Monthly

Flow Genome Project co-founders, Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal rejoin Moe Abdou to discuss their latest book, Stealing Fire.
This week we're kicking off the disruption series. We're going to discover how incredible people disrupt their lives, their industries, and the world to create a powerful impact. Today's guest, Steven Kotler, is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and the Co-Founder / Director of Research for the Flow Genome Project. He is one of the world's leading experts on ultimate human performance and he has spent his entire career exploring how people do the impossible. Rise of Superman is about how action and adventure sports athletes reinvent kinesthetic possibility. Abundance and Bold are about the entrepreneurs who have built the fastest and largest companies in the shortest amount of time. Small Furry Prayer is about the cutting edge of empathy and altruism. Stealing Fire (Steven's newest book) is about a $4 trillion underground movement to harness alternate states of consciousness to massively uplevel performance. Through years of research, Steven has discovered that the secret to disrupting human performance is the same across the board: altered states of consciousness. This includes flow states, meditative states, psychedelic states, and more. “One of the most well-established facts in the whole history of psychology is that altered states are incredibly good for us, and it's not common knowledge.” If you're not familiar, altered states of consciousness can be defined as a specific bandwidth of non-ordinary states of consciousness where... our normal sense of self vanishes our normal sense of time disappears we are freed from the drudgery of daily life we get a sense of effortless motivation and we can tap into a level of inspiration information that is normally unavailable. In Stealing Fire, Steven uses the Greek term ecstasis to refer to this phenomenon and bypass the negative stigma placed upon altered states of consciousness. He also discusses the four forces accelerating this movement towards the upper possibility space of human experience, which he calls the Four Forces for Ecstasy: Psychology Neurobiology Pharmacology Technology Altered states of consciousness aren't just for team building at Burning Man. They can be directly applied to your life and workspace. After rolling out mindfulness training at Aetna, they gained $3,000 per employee in productivity and saved $2,000 per employee in healthcare costs. At Patagonia, the Founder has a “let my people go surfing” policy to encourage flow. Standing in a power pose for a few minutes can change your physiology and empower you. We get more flow any time the challenge at hand slightly exceeds our skillset. Physical, emotional, psychological, and social risk can all focus our attention. We are all created with the potential to do more than we could possibly ask for or possibly imagine. Steven's research is a gift that will help us take a few steps towards disrupting what is possible. If you're interested in exploring the fringes of human possibility, you can't do better than Steven's books. These are a few of my favorites… BOLD – This book challenged me to have a bigger vision for my life and the impact I'm capable of having. I still don't believe I am thinking boldly enough. Abundance – Beyond loving the word, this book woke me up to the fact that NOW is the best time in human history to create and innovate amazing solutions to today's problems and tomorrow's challenges. Contrary to past experience or what one may have been led to believe, the resources are abundantly available. Rise of Superman – We all have the ability to perform at super optimized levels. We refer to it as being "in the zone." God created us with an amazing organ - the brain - and if we put ourselves in the right environment it is amazing what each of us is capable of doing. -- Don't be a podcast junkie… Resources: Pre-Order...
If you want to see into the future, and live longer, healthier and happier then you must tune into today's podcast. It may scare the hell out of you but there is no holding it back. The future is here and you can't get out of its way. Steven Kotler, the best-selling author, journalist and entrepreneur joins James for today's show. Steven's books include Abundance, The Rise of Superman, Bold, and his newest release, Tomorrowland: Our Journey from Science Fiction to Science Fact. Tomorrowland offers an optimistic look into the future, but at the same time it is a bit scary. With an introduction of, "The future is here," Steven's book outlines the rapid pace that technology is and will continue to define us in every way imaginable. Some of the highlights from the book include: Strap-on bionics that reverse the aging trend and put force back into our bodies. Extending life using stem cells to swap out old body parts for new ones. Artificial vision that restores what was lost. With all these advancements, questions are raised. Steven asks how these things will affect religion and our thoughts about theoretical mortality in the face of technological immortality. They discuss having the ability to move our short-term memories to a place in the brain where long-term memories are stored. On the scary side of this is synthetic biology where customizable diseases can target a specific person without them knowing. Criminals could potentially exploit this but the use of microsensors could be a way to fight back. Steven believes the greatest opportunities are in virtual reality, a field that will be exploding in three to five years. He thinks even our jobs will move into the virtual world and we will be spending more and more time there. According to Steven, internet-sized opportunities exist in this because: Technology is progressing at a rapid rate. Economic possibilities have been proven. Deeply meaningful experiences can be created. Links and Resources Mentioned In The Show: To learn more about Tomorrowland and Steven's other books and articles, head to Steven's website. Welcome to episode #450 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. We live in amazing times. We are both at the frontier of what is coming next and also in the midst of being connected like never before. We're seeing humanity develop, evolve and leverage technology to do amazing things. There are many pessimists, but Steven Kotler is an optimist... and a fascinating one, at that. Steven Kotler is an American bestselling author, journalist, and entrepreneur. He is probably best known as the co-author (with Peter Diamandis of the X Prize fame) of Abundance and the recently released, Bold - How To Go Big, Create Wealth and Impact The World. With that, Steven has also written The Rise of Superman, A Small, Furry Prayer, West of Jesus, and The Angle Quickest for Flight. Peter Diamandis, CEO of the XPRIZE and co-chairman of Planetary Resources and Steven Kotler, the cofounder and director of research for the Flow Genome Project aswell as being author of "The Rise of Superman," a New York Times bestseller, and previous guest on The James Altucher Show, came together to co-write Bold, about building companies using exponentially growing technologies like 3D printing, artificial intelligence, and synthetic engineering. They join James today to talk about the prevalent doom-and-gloom media that saturates us with negative news over and over again. Peter says he believes that people need an alternative and hear the good news. They go through the six D's outlined in the book: Digitalization, Disruption, Deception, Demonetization, Dematerialization, and Democratization Peter says, "Bold was written as the roadmap for entrepreneurs to get us to this abundant future with the realization that the world's biggest problems are the biggest business opportunities."
