As a founder and co-producer of one of the largest and oldest Burning Man events, Monique Shiess has a lot going on. AfrikaBurn does too. Started in 2007, it averages 10,000 participants annually in recent years. Monique shares its origins with Stuart and Andie. From the EDM scene, gallery spaces, queer community, and producers of “weird gatherings,” they birthed AfrikaBurn with roots in anarchy, trickster energy and hippie-dom. They explore how to be welcoming, not just radically inclusive, in the aftermath of Apartheid, and the context of global trends, on the land of indigenous people. Then there's the fun part. Monique says that play is the vector for changing the world by accessing aspects of yourself that go dormant in the default world, and that all Burn movements have paradigm shifting potential while also having a ton of fun with “the best humans that exist.”www.afrikaburn.orgAfrikaBurn (Wikipedia)Practising Imagining (TEDx Cape Town)Events Change Lives: AfrikaBurn Legacy Case Study

Interesting episode this, if we say so ourselves. We continue a (not recorded) conversation we had at AfrikaBurn three years ago, where we discussed stuckness and the question: How can stuckness become unstuck? Neither of us could remember the answer we had then, unfortunately. But we are having a go at it today. A part of the episode is taken up by Pia coaching Bart on changes in his life, which was very nice (thank you Pia). We (also) discuss: Fear of uncertainty, principle of impermanence, intentional experimenting, the foolishness of clinging, the distinction between moving towards and moving away from, the importance of seeking opportunities for change, the concept of life phases, the importance of solitude (internal time), and the related practices of meditation, reflection, journaling and reading and the believe that it's ok, even desirable, to be uncomfortable and that we can learn from the negative emotions, when going through big changes. Apologies for the bad sound quality on Bart's side.

Being there in the middle of nowhere, no civilization, people building shelter and accommodation for a few days, being there for a few days to a week, break off everything and leaving no trace. In the middle of all that I find myself in such a luxurious position where I can see many of my friends, spend time with them without having the distraction of phones, e-mail etc. Being fully present with the people there and then also being able to share music with them….that to me is such a blessing and I think you can hear that back in my sets. So…..I played another set at Space Cowboys and I felt so much joy, I saw so much pure joy in peoples eyes, body language and the sounds which came out of their mouths ;-) Enjoy the live set I played there with the sound of the audience in it as well. Jacaranda FM — Staying at home is more difficult than we first imagined. As South Africans follow a strict lockdown, streets once flooded with life are now barren, balloon-filled birthdays are celebrated over video calls, and emojis have replaced kisses on the cheek before bedtime.Disconnected from loved ones, many people risk stumbling into the darkness of depression and despair. But musician Martinique du Toit is singing notes of strength to guide us. Du Toit, who performs under the name Matinino, was playing the piano before she could read. By the age of 10, she was writing her own music. Experimenting with genres, Du Toit marries pop, dark wave, jazz, indie folk, electronic, and contemporary to create her own distinctive style. She’s established herself firmly as a musician, oscillating between crowds on the baked soil of Afrikaburn and the hilltops of Holland. But for Du Toit, music is not just entertainment, but an instrument of healing. “When I started composing, it was a form of medicine for myself,” she says. Using her voice, Du Toit tackles global issues from gender-based violence to the current coronavirus pandemic. When President Cyril Ramaphosa enforced a national lockdown to stop the spread of COVID-19, Du Toit observed people’s grief and was inspired to write the song 21 Days. “I wanted to tell people that by sitting at home, you are a warrior,” she says. Shortly after releasing the track, people from around the country responded to her message to remain safe in their homes by filming their own experiences in shutdown. Cinematographer Barrett De Kock compiled the footage of 30 contributors into a music video showcasing South Africa’s resilient spirit during unprecedented times. Despite distance and differences, Du Toit’s music has united us. And together, we have the strength to overcome anything. Beautiful News

“Beans on Toast… it’s cheap, it’s easy, it’s English, does what it says on the tin.” Jay McAllister, aka Beans on Toast, is a true English folk hero. You’ll find him at a British festival on a Sunday afternoon, belting out his irreverent songs for worn out ravers. From helping Banksy launch sky lanterns, to extolling the virtues of a bamboo toothbrush, Beans is the paradigm of a festive life that makes a difference. On the show we talk about the long chain of folk heroes and how Beans became a political songwriter. We chat about festival favorites from Glastonbury to AfrikaBurn. We discuss what it means to bring a child into a festival lifestyle and run the whole show as a family. We end the podcast with a track from Bean’s new album called “Take Your Shit Home With You,” which was requested by the organizers of Boomtown Fair to combat rampant tent abandonment at the event. You can purchase his new album, “The Inevitable Train Wreck,” all of his prolific catalogue, and his book “Drunk Folk Stories” from his website. Your purchase will be delivered with love from his Mum and Dad who manage the merch. A huge thank you to all my supporters on Patreon! Being at AfrikaBurn is always such a highlight of the year for me. Being there with people I love and then playing for a crowd who really likes what I am doing! (Lucky me ;-)) This year I played for the Leopard Mafia on Wednesday and on Thursday for the Space Cowboys. The week before I played at another sold out Suikerbossie in Cape Town (thanks to Caroline/Karen to make that happen again). So I already had a nice warm-up for the South African crowd. I never have expectations before I play somewhere because I always want to go all-in with a blank mind. And so I did on this trip as well. But knowing what the crowd and atmosphere was the years before I always feel very excited to bring some nice pieces of music with me. Please listen yourself what happened during this sunset set. After ‘Follow The Sun’ we went into nighttime mode and although the temperature dropped my heart was heated by the love and happy faces I saw in front of me. Hasta La Vista and till next time! Follow the Deep & Sexy playlist on Spotify: bit.ly/AlexCrPL AfrikaBurn has a special spot in my heart. The reason why is the people I have met over the last 3 times I was there. There is something about being in an area with no buildings, roads or whatsoever. People build their own 'camps/homes/tent structures' to be able to live out of there for a couple of days to a week. And one very important thing: no cell phone service, no wifi, no tv, no billboards.....instead of that: wind, rain, sand, sun...it's all there. And then there is the people, meeting random people, people you already saw before and just having fun with them, share food, water, music, art structures and/or meaningful conversations. It's all there and brings us in my opinion a little closer to our cores, probably closer to how our ancestors were living. And then....being able to play music for the people who are there.....it feels like a blessing to share that and seeing all these happy faces, dancing and moving bodies. Nothing to worry, just feel and hear the music and enjoy it with the people around you/us......so the inspiration of this podcast brings me back to AfrikaBurn 2018. I am looking forward to be back next year. For now: Enjoy this musical journey! Love, Alex www.facebook.com/alexcruzofficial for a free download

And the set you find here is the set I played on Thursday afternoon, sunset at Camp Now. Playing on the playa, dancing people around me, beautifully dressed up and feeling the freedom and their own soul and emotions. It was another privilege to play for all of these people again. Thanks as well to Bubbles & Bass and The Golden Calf for bringing so many beautiful experiences during my live sets there! And of course a big thanks to my AfrikaBurn Dino family! Enjoy this set! Till soon! Love, Alex Free download: Facebook.com/alexcruzofficial

Follow the Deep & Sexy playlist on Spotify: bit.ly/AlexCrPL So many beautiful experiences I have been through the last couple of weeks. From a beautiful gig in Lake Tahoe, to other crazy ones in LA, NY, San Diego and Austin. And then last week I had the privilege to play at the AfrikaBurn. A festival about 5 hours drive from Cape Town. I did two shows there. A sunset one and a pre-burn one. Both beautiful on its own. And when you hear the crowd scream: 'one more song, one more song' knowing that I already played 2 'more' songs....yes, then you know that they like what you do. That having said: I love bringing joy and happiness in your lives so the feeling is mutual! So straight from the heart another Deep & Sexy podcast for you guys. It's been a while so it is about time to fill your hearts with joy, soul and emotion again through some music. Embrace it and till the next time we (live or on soundcloud)meet! Love! I spent the last month traveling to various corners of the world. Some of the time was spent for gigs, some of the time at AfrikaBurn, and some was visiting friends and family. Amidst all the excitement, flying, partying, and jet lag, I'd often waver between desperately trying to stay awake and the opposite, hopelessly trying to fall asleep. During these bouts of insomnia, I found myself in a half-asleep dream-like state that I think made its way through into the feeling of this mix: varying levels of intensity while still holding on to a floating, dream-like state. If you'd like to hear a more personal take on my mixes and creation process, check out this interview piece NPR did with me here: http://www.kalw.org/post/bay-area-beats-dj-atish-art-mixing To keep up with my gigs and general stuff going on in my music world, follow me on facebook: http://facebook.com/atishmusic Special thanks to Oleksiy Khmelov for the beautiful artwork, "Jellyfish". Dynamism....from a metaphysical perspective, it's the belief that the nature of every substance contains an expression of the universe. As an artistic movement, dynamism is the capture of an objects motion - both intrinsic and relative to its environment. To me, Dynamism is the push and pull of intensity and energy. I consider this mix one of my more ambitious efforts, aiming to work through strong swings of intensity, melody, and motion while still staying on some semblance of a cogent course. I find that this is a mix that I enjoy the more I listen to it, which usually isn't the case. I hope it resonates with you as much as it does for me. Here's what I have going these next few weeks: April 26 - Toy-Toy, Johannesburg, South Africa April 27 - Fiction, Cape Town, South Africa May 1-6 - AfrikaBurn, Tankwa Town, South Africa May 15 - Mumbai, India (venue to be confirmed) May 17 - Level Two, Melbourne, Australia May 18 - Spice Cellar, Sydney, Australia May 19 - TBA, Australia Feel free to follow me on facebook here: http://facebook.com/atishmusic Tracklist: Sebo K - Shades of Red [Mobilee 2013] Mano Andri - Cinematic [Cyclic Records 2013] Moomin - you neva know [Closer 2013] QMUSSE, Dubaa - Message (Version 1) [Itom Records 2013] Dominik Eulberg - Der Tanz Der Gluehweurmchen (Kollektive Turmstrasse "Dirt Glow" Remix) [Traum 2011] Daso, Pawas - El Paso (Yapacc Remix) [Brise Records 2009] SIS - Messara [Cocolino 2013] Anthony Collins - Prism [Freak N Chic 2009] Umit Han - An Einem Traurigen Morgen [Traum 2012] Konstantine Sibold - Gestade [Salon Rosi 2010] Nautiluss - Zero Gravity [3024 2013] Markas Palubenka - Kill Me (Few Nolder Remix) [Get Physical Music 2013]

Making his RIPEcast debut, the Space Cowboys are pleased to welcome Ali B of Air Recordings to the show. For his appearance on the RIPEcast this week, Ali B pays homage to AfrikaBurn, a regional Burning Man event in Tankwa, South Africa, where he'll be playing April 25th-30th. Safe travels, Ali B, and thanks for the fabulous RIPEcast! A little more background on this week's distinguished guest.. You can catch Ali B hosting Saturday nights at West London’s ‘Paradise’ where his legendary 5 hour sets seamlessly take in everything from blues and funk to rock, soul, dub, disco and beyond, captured on his ever popular series of ‘Oh Shit!’ mix tapes and ‘Airpod’ podcasts. His latest productions include remixes for the likes of Fort Knox Five and collaborations with Nick Thayer on the mighty Bombstrikes label.   With an eclectic and varied music industry background spanning nearly two decades, Ali B has a broad sense of musical appreciation, coupled with an intuitive feel for the dance-floor which has seen him hold down DJ residencies at London’s two most influential venues. After making his mark at the legendary Blue Note club, he then went on to become the resident DJ for Fabric where he’s been since the day it opened, releasing one of the first albums in their legendary mix CD series. He has also extensively toured Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Asia, Africa and the US.   Ali B spent his teens working for the Acid Jazz record label followed by several years in Public Relations, representing the likes of Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay and Pete Tong. He went on to host a weekly radio show on Capital FM for five years, followed by 5 years on Kiss FM alongside regular appearances on stations including BBC 6 and Ministry Of Sound Radio. He has also made several appearances on British television for the likes of MTV, ITV and Channel 4.   Ali B’s infamous Air parties have been running since the mid nineties at venues across London, including The Blue Note, 333, Mass, Electrowerkz, Rhythm Factory, Cargo and Matter as well as hosting arenas at festivals such as Glastonbury, Global Gathering, Hi-Fi and Australia’s Future Music Festival.   Ali B’s Air Recordings record label covers a wide range of leftfield sounds. Releases have included Finish electro breaks duo Mr Velcro Fastener, US stalwarts Tony Faline and DJ Love, the UK’s Will Saul (with Ursula Rucker), Jellybass, Janette Slack, Diverted, Lazersonic, Franci$co and Mr No Hands, alongside Ali B himself who’s track with The Jungle Brothers propelled Air Recordings into the major league. ‘Beats On A String’ was play-listed on BBC 6 in the UK and Australia’s national Triple J radio station. Alongside remixes for the likes of Positiva, Multiply, Sony and Cheeky, Ali B has also released mix albums for Fabric, Y4K, Godskitchen and his own Air Recordings label.   Ali B is widely regarded as the DJs DJ, as comfortable at the controls of clubs such as Fabric playing a heady mix of cutting edge bass and beats as he is digging for rare 7’s to play one of his exclusive party sets. He is regularly in demand at high profile events such as Vancouver’s Winter Olympics, Abbey Road Studios with Mark Ronson, numerous film wrap parties, various private members clubs such as Bungalow 8 & Dover Street Arts Club and celebrity events which in the last 12 months have included Mick Hucknall’s 50’th birthday party and Gary Barlow’s wedding anniversary. He is happiest travelling the world and seeking out intrepid party locations such as Afrikaburn in the Karoo desert, Burning Man in the US or Lake Of Stars in Malawi, catch him while you can… For a little more background on AfrikaBurn, check out these videos Ali B shot at last year's event:   http://www.youtube.com/user/airrecordings   Or visit www.afrikaburn.com.   For more information on Ali B visit him on Twitter at Twitter @DJ_Ali_B.
