Stocks, oil and cryptocurrencies have fallen overnight in the US. The situation in Ukraine and worries ahead of a US Federal Reserve announcement later this week is being blamed. The S&P 500 fell 2.4 percent in morning trading. The technology-focused Nasdaq Composite lost 2.7 percent and The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.7 percent, in what is a seventh consecutive day of losses. Russian stocks and bonds also took a hit, down more than 5 percent. The sell off came as the UK ordered some of its embassy staff to leave Ukraine, a day after the US ordered family members of its embassy staff to leave Kiev because of the risk that Russia would take "significant military action. Financial Times reporter Peter Wells spoke to Corin Dann. The New Zealand sharemarket clawed back some of its early trading losses, at the end of trade yesterday. The top 50 index fell more than 2 percent during early trading - the biggest single session decline since late January last year. But it has recovered throughout the afternoon to end the day down 1.25 percent.

Going West's Sir Graeme Douglas Orator in 2015 was writer Stephanie Johnson. Addressing the festival theme, Holding the Line, Stephanie delivered a hilarious and biting satire of neoliberalism in New Zealand, donning a wig to take on the parodic character of Amanda *Tauiwi Reinhardt Carlton, the ‘National Party Poet Laureate'. * Tauiwi is a Māori word for non-Māori, used here by Johnson to poke a stick at well-heeled upper-class conservative white women. The author of 16 books including The Writers' Festival, six plays and radio dramas and two books of poetry, Stephanie has appeared at Going West many times since the first festival in 1996. She is the winner of multiple awards, fellowships and honours; in 2019 she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to literature, as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours. Stephanie has taught English and creative writing at the University of Auckland. Dr. Hymer is a Professor of Psychology in Education, as well as a long time chess enthusiast. GM Peter Wells, in addition to being an active player is a prolific chess author and a trainer for some of Great Britain’s top juniors. As a pair, they are perfectly suited to write a book tackling so many persistent questions related to chess improvement. Our conversation discusses questions such as the following: What is a growth mindset, and how can it apply to chess improvement? What can parents and trainers learn from the approach to nurturing talent taken by the family of GM Magnus Carlsen?  How much of chess talent is determined by genetics? What are Peter’s favorite games of his career? How has Barry managed to go from the 1800 level to over 2000 while in his 50s?  For the answers to these questions and many more, please enjoy the show. Addressing the festival theme, Holding the Line, Stephanie delivered a hilarious and biting satire of neoliberalism in New Zealand, donning a wig to take on the parodic character of Amanda Tauiwi Reinhardt Carlton, the ‘National Party Poet Laureate' (Tauiwi is a Māori word for non-Māori, used here by Johnson to poke a stick at well-heeled upper-class conservative white women). What did people do when the Roman empire fell apart around them? Recent scholarship, based on new archeological discoveries and techniques, argues that in the "dark" centuries between 450 and 750 AD, the people of western Europe, from conquering kings to ordinary peasants, improvised new political alliances, maintained law and order, improved the productivity of their land, and invented new crafts and art forms, building a resilient and inventive society on the foundations (often literally) of the old. Peter is the project coordinator for the local urban food hub Ōtākaro Orchard.  Its aim is to provide knowledge and inspiration about sustainable food systems as part of the Food Resilience Network.  In this interview we talk with Peter about his background and experiences in different parts of the world and what led him to move to Christchurch to be involved with this new initiative as well as his time in Edinburgh, Costa Rica, discussing modern dance, acting and theatre.   There are three stages to what is being done at Ōtākaro Orchard: An Edible Park featuring a public food forest, multiple herb and vegetable beds showcasing a variety of growing techniques, space for educational workshops and an amphitheatre for public gatherings and events. A Local Food Information Centre and Cafe housed in what we envision will be Christchurch's most regenerative building. A Dome which will serve as an indoor food production and classroom space. https://otakaroorchard.org/ http://beaconfoodforest.org/ NZ food related resources: https://www.localisingfood.com/ More from the website: The Ōtākaro Orchard  will serve as the welcoming front door to the local food resilience movement with has been gaining momentum since the earthquakes shook our city apart.  In that time we realised that supermarkets carry only 3 days worth of food and if our supply chains get disrupted we go hungry. Community gardens became important places of refuge and connection as well as sources of fresh food.  In the past few years the Food Resilience Network (aka Edible Canterbury) has been holding a collective vision of Christchurch as an 'Edible Garden City'. A city where every citizen has access to the fresh and healthy food they need to live well. Research has shown that up to 40% of Cantabrians are food insecure which means they can struggle to have access to the food they need. Reimagining our urban green spaces as edible ones is a key way we can start to change this. We hope that by establishing the Ōtākaro Orchard as proof that these kinds of spaces can work, that many more can become possible in the city.

If you're a man there have been two series of remarkable writing over the past year that I recommend you read. One is Peter Wells' series called Hello Darkness on the website The Spinoff. The acclaimed New Zealand author Peter Wells kept a diary talking about what he saw, was going through, and thought since his prostate cancer diagnosis. A cancer which has spread and metastasised. It's an emotional read. Because of his skill with words and his ability to write about emotion and feeling. It has a dark beauty. It's easily understandable. His ability to write about the tug at the heart and gut of battling the beast is very affecting. The other is Simon Wilson's series in the Herald. It's a prostate cancer diary as well but it's more pragmatic and practical. A less lyrical take on the science and more on the grunt of the battle to control a beast that wants to take your life. This past weekend Simon looked at the screening for the third biggest killer of men and in that he wrote some astounding things. There are 4 ways to figure out if you're on the battlefield. The digital exam and a PSA test are early indicators and then there is a biopsy and an MRI to confirm if the bugger is in there. The gold standard is the biopsy or MRI: they're the proof. That's an expensive option. So men are relying on a gentle probing by your friendly neighbourhood GP and the PSA test before they go for the big ones.Doctors are not happy about either the digital exam or the PSA test because they're inconclusive or misleading.  For instance, did you know that your PSA levels can be raised if you've done vigorous exercise or sex. I didn't.  Good information to knowThe Prostate Cancer Foundation told Simon that American doctors are against the PSA test in particular because they want to cover their backside.  They don't want to concern people who may record worrying signs but don't have the thing. But is that enough reason to tell people not to test for PSA at all?Get a grip. That's like seeing a crack in a building and not sending the engineers in.So here's my story. When I turned 40 I started yearly exams. I thought it was time to send my doctors fingers into the dark places. She agreed. I also asked for a PSA test. She disagreed. She said it could alarm me because it was unreliable. So she gave me my blood test script. I noticed she hadn't ticked the PSA test box so I ticked it with the same coloured pen. When the results came back my PSA was fine but my doctor was irritated that I took my health tests into my own hands. I said suck it up. We now have a baseline. How could it hurt? We've tested ever since. Apparently, my prostate is nice and soft and my PSA is unchanged. Too much information. Now in my 50s, I know a number of men whose life has been saved by PSA tests. I know it's not a gold standard test but it's a bloody good indication of whether you want to spend more finding out if you have it. I also know a lot of friends who haven't had a single check. Get a grip you boysI have no idea why the PSA test holds such fear for doctors particularly in this non-fault environment that we have in New Zealand. Women wouldn't let this lie. From breast screening to pap smears women have been truly vigilant about their health and their screening. So here's the other thing Simon Wilson wrote that blew my mind. According to the Health Research Council, for every dollar spent researching women's health, the amount we spend researching men's health is six cents. The Prostate Cancer Foundation's annual conference took place over the weekend with a focus on ways to improve diagnosis and treatment strategies. Much of the talk was be on the likelihood of a new test for prostate cancer that's cheap and reliable.Do it. Spend on it. Currently, men are in a cone of silence that actually resembles stupidity. The squeaky wheel gets the oil and it's time for men to squeak.

This week our guest on Chit Chat Across the Pond Lite is Peter Wells, who writes for the Sydney Morning Herald - and is a semi-regular guest on DTNS. Peter was asked to attend WWDC by Apple and in that capacity had amazing access to Apple engineers to ask the right questions. We talked about the new iMac screen (1 BILLION colors) and whether you can tell the difference, whether Kaby Lake processors matter in desktops, where the speed of the new SSDs might matter, and about VR/AR and graphics cards. He gives us his views on the new 10.5" iPad Pro and whether it's worth double the price of the iPad nothing. Peter is very bullish on iOS 11 and how it will affect the iPad market.

As well as opening up the opportunity to make cheap gags, it also gave our Head of Policy, Peter Wells, an opportunity to open up some data, talk to people about swear words and the importance of context, and to wonder whether that data can be used to make better decisions about swearing. WARNING: Contains strong language About Peter Wells Peter Wells is a open data policy expert and Head of Policy at the ODI.

He talks about the tools he used to create the register and dashboard, how people can help collaboratively maintain them on the web and some of the lessons he learnt along the way. He also admits that it wasn’t all about cats and talks about how anyone can help strengthen data infrastructure. About Peter Wells Peter Wells is a open data policy expert and consultant at the ODI.
