Phillip and Eric are exploiting the algorithm this week by talking Star Wars while it's still hot, but not the Star Wars anyone expected. They're going over the obscure comic Dark Empire by Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy, set after Return of the Jedi featuring a resurrected Palpatine when it was still original. They talk about its trippy art and color scheme by Cam Kennedy, its lackluster writing and pacing by comparison, and their shared hatred of The Rise of Skywalker and toxic Star Wars fans who hate The Last Jedi.
When Marvel let their license to produce Star Wars comics lapse in 1986, Return of the Jedi was three years in the rear-view mirror and it seemed possible there would never be any further installments in the franchise. But Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy's 1991 miniseries Dark Empire would begin Dark Horse Comics' 23-year run of Star Wars comics and help launch the Expanded Universe. Set six years after the Battle of Endor, Dark Empire sees Luke Skywalker tempted to the Dark Side by the newly revived Emperor, Han Solo and Leia Organa fleeing bounty hunters, and a new Imperial doomsday weapon threatening the galaxy. We'll look at the long and rocky development of the series, how involved (or not) Lucasfilm was in the story, and how it compares to its prose sister project, Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy. This is the only podcast where you can hear two grown men arguing (politely) about Star Wars!Support the podcast at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

Borag Thungg, Whatnauts! Time for Drokk!! Judge Dredd The Complete Case Files Vol. 39 is here, and it is the first volume to be released as the same year we record our companion episode! After the last smashing volume, one would think Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester would be delighted to encounter the stories here written by John Wagner, Alan Grant, Gordon Rennie, Si Spurrier and others, and drawn by Cam Kennedy, Henry Flint, Duke Mighten, Simon Coleby, David Roach, ColinMacNeil, and the legendary Chris Weston....but credits are one thing, and stories sadly are another. Join us as we once again grapple with stories of the mighty lawman of Megacity One and why, after so long, they are such slippery things to make succeed! in 1988, Star Wars was dead. It wasn't until a comics writer named Tom Vietch wrote a letter to Lucasfilm to propose a new Star Wars comic project on a whim, and to his surprise, both the company and George Lucas himself were game. For Vietch, there was only one artist who could do the story justice: Cam Kennedy. Despite being delayed years and moving from Marvel to Dark Horse Comics, the resulting DARK EMPIRE became one of the cornerstones of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe and permanently shaped how a certain generation of fans came to think of our beloved characters. Talking DARK EMPIRE is comics writer/artist RUSS along with JAMES, host of THE SECRET ORIGINS OF MINT CONDITION podcast. Borag Thungg, Whatnauts! Time for Drokk!! Judge Dredd The Complete Case Files Vol. 38 arrives to fire its autocannons, catching Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester in it sights! Sure, there are stories written by Alan Grant, John Smith, and Gordon Rennie, but somehow once again it is John Wagner who manages to do amazing things with the Lawman of Mega-City One, be that the done-in-one wonders of S.A.M., The Good Man, or A Finger of Suspicion, or the more sustained stories Shakedown, Cincinnati, or the superlative Brothers of The Blood, aided and abetted by brilliant work from Carlos Ezquerra, Jim Murray, Cam Kennedy, John Burns, Charlie Adlard, Cliff Robinson and more! Borag Thungg, Whatnauts! Time for Drokk!! Judge Dredd The Complete Case Files Vol. 41 has come to town and with it, a handful of stories written by John Wagner and Gordon Rennie as well as the last Dredd story to date written by Garth Ennis! It also brings with it incredible talents like Carlos Ezquerra, Steve Pugh, Cam Kennedy, John Burns, Charlie Adlard, Ian Gibson, and a tour de force performance by John Higgins! Plus, there is the conclusion to not one but two major narrative threads, plus a tribute to both Hammer Films and alien invader movies from the 50s! Surely there is nothing for Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester to disagree on, right? Right? Andy Janes is a character designer and story board artist for Aardman animations, and a published Beano artist. He joined me at the Lawless convention to discuss a huge hardback collection of Cam Kennedy's Judge Dredd stories, and to reflect on Kennedy's wonderful artwork and storytelling. Google tells me there was a second volume of Kennedy stories from IDW but that is also out of print and very hard to find. You can find a list of episodes so far and all the upcoming books on the Facebook page, follow the podcast on Twitter, and on instagram, or email me comments and suggestions to MCBCpodcast@gmail.comMusic used in this episode is Circuit Breaker by the artist Robodub. If you cannot see the audio controls, listen/download the audio file here Or Download hereRight click and choose save link as to download to your computer.
As a car accident sends Lazarus Jones into a coma, out of our known reality, and into an intergalactic war in the dimension of Urumm, Brian and Sam finds themselves outside their familiar reality of Star Wars and instead discussing the limited run comic series, The Light and Darkness War! Along the way, they're also talking about Disney Gallery and some of their favorite pop culture items from 1988 and 1989, before diving into the comic that landed Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy their job of reintroducing Star Wars comics to the world with Dark Empire. Menteps! Teslas! NA! This one has it all!
As the Emperor's agents infiltrate New Alderaan in search of Leia's Jedi twins, Sean Davis infiltrates the podcast, and our hearts, as we wrap up our coverage of Dark Empire II! He's here to tell us about how much he wanted to see Forget Paris as a child, plus we're discussing what a Star Wars video game in the style of the Uncharted series might look like, heaping enormous praise on the work of Cam Kennedy, and pondering the many unknowable questions raised by Dark Empire II.
In this episode, Mike and Andy talk about Moulin Rouge' … OR was it Dark Empire, the 1991 script for the Sequel trilogy. No really, it was both!! We ogle over artwork from Cam Kennedy, laugh at our Star Wars love, or anti-love, and end up talking Karl Urban, Ewan McGregor, and more! We talk about Andy's latest trip to the comic store, the new Star Trek movies, using comics as a unit of spending, time and distance, and Mike ranks all the event books we have gone over so far. In this episode, Chris welcomes Katie from the “Star Wars Alliance” and “Slice of Film” podcaststo discuss the very first comic book series she has ever read, “Star Wars: Dark Empire 1”. Six years after thebattle of Endor, the fight for freedom rages on. Han Solo and Princess Leia, nowmarried, struggle to protect their twin children from danger. Darth Vader is dead, but areborn Empire strikes back against the Rebel Alliance, and the Rebels discover thattheir greatest foe may be their closest friend: Luke Skywalker!Geek Ultimate Alliance on Twitter: @GUAPodNetworkWFTB on Twitter: @FinestBelieversWFTB Email: worldsfinesttruebelievers@gmail.comChris on Twitter: @ChrisBalgaKatie on Twitter: @kgilstrap13Star Wars Alliance on Twitter: @starwrsallianceSlice of Film on Twitter: @sliceoffilm1Katie’s Blog “Slicer Scribbles”: https://slicerscribbles.com/

Time for another collection of B-Sides, as we read through the stories pulled from specials, annuals, poster books from 1990 through 1993. John Wagner inspires, Alan Grant does pretty much the opposite, and a new wave of Dredd writers incouding Robbie Morrison, Simon Furman, Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and John Smith try to secure their place of the craggy shores of Dredd, aided and abetted by Shaky Kane, John Burns, the mighty Paul Grist, Glynn Dillon, Colin MacNeil, Cam Kennedy and many more! KUTV reports (via Comicbook.com) that both Christensen and McDiarmid visited a Salt Lake City children's hospital together while they were in the area for FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention. Some fans suspected that this act of kindness doubled as a marketing tactic, a notion that seemed fairly far-fetched until Disney cancelled the two actors' spotlight panel at the con. While all of this should be taken with at least a pound of salt, it's definitely an interesting turn of events. And if one of the film's actors is to be believed, we're in for more than just a few surprises. Let the speculation continue!Samuel the Hutt: Is Anakin coming back? Esquire.com: The Dark Empire Comics from the 90’s Might Hold a Spoiler For the Big Palpatine Twist in The Rise of Skywalkerhttps://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a28916176/star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker-dark-empire-comics-theory-palpatine-rey-twist-spoiler/Released between December 1991 and October 1992, Dark Empire was a Dark Horse Comics series of comic books written by Tom Veitch and illustrated by Cam Kennedy. You may recognize some of the vibrant, moody art that appeared on the title pages of the bi-monthly series—it's become pretty iconic in its own right. The series picks up six years after the Battle of Endor, aka the central events of Return of the Jedi. Starring all the famous faces from the franchise except for Darth Vader (he's been toasted by this point), the series sees Luke and the gang fighting against a newly reborn Empire who is striking against a struggling Rebel Alliance. Han and Leia have a son, and the Emperor has mysteriously returned, despite his death at the end of Episode VI. Sound familiar?...If we're talking the enduring influence of Dark Empire, the rebirth of Palpatine is probably the story's greatest narrative feat. Bringing the slain Sith leader back to life isn't easy. The story sees Palpatine transfer his mind and consciousness into a series of clones. As expected, the spooky old dude is seeking immortality–a notion that, for any fan of the prequel trilogy, we know is very much canon to Star Wars. In Veitch's story, Luke falls for Palpatine's tricks, becoming the Emperor's new apprentice. Now, in our new continuity, Luke is very much dead. But it's not hard to imagine that Rey–especially with her dark duds and red lightsaber from the recent D23 trailer–may take Luke's place in this iteration of the story. It's Luke's sister, Leia, who actually sways the Luke and helps him overcome the Emperor, in the end. Perhaps we can anticipate the same sort of twist–except this time, it will be Ben Solo who rescues Rey from the Emperor's grasps and redeems himself once and for all.BB-N8: Is this where The Rise of Skywalker is headed?DigitalSpy.com: The Mandalorian reveals origin of the First Orderhttps://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a28920734/star-wars-tv-series-the-mandalorian-first-order-origin/We already know a bit about its cast, its place in the wider Star Wars universe, and its role as the "freakier" side of the franchise, but now we know a little more about The Mandalorian's context – and how it will introduce the First Order. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the show's director Dave Filoni and creator Jon Favreau hinted that The Mandalorian will chart the origins of Supreme Leader Snoke's dictatorship, giving fans an insight into the First Order's not-so humble beginnings..."This doesn't turn into a good guy universe because you blew up two Death Stars," Filoni explained. "You get that the Rebels won and they're trying to establish a Republic, but there's no way that could have set in for everybody all at once. "You have in a Western where you're out on the frontier and there might be Washington and they might have some marshals, but sometimes, good luck finding one." Situating The Mandalorian right between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, Favreau added: "What could happen in the 30 years between celebrating the defeat of the Empire and then the First Order? "You come in on Episode VII, [and the First Order are] not just starting out. They're pretty far along. So somehow, things weren't necessarily managed as well as they could have been if they ended up in hot water again like that."You guys excited about this?

Spoke to comic creator, animator and director of the MSc programme in animation and VFX and MDes comics and graphic novels, Phillip Vaughan. Phil began by telling me about how his time in the games industry led to a fortuitous meeting with comic hero Cam Kennedy. Eventually making the transition from developing stories in games to teaching students the art of storytelling in comics. Phil spoke of how lessoned learned from working in animation have been intrinsic in helping the next generation of comic creators succeed. Evidently passionate and in love for all things comics, it was a pleasure sitting and talking with Phil. Enjoy listening.
One of 2000 AD's creators who should need no introduction, Cam Kennedy has been the artist on some of the most seminal stories in the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, including Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, and The VCs. A huge influence on generations of comic book artists, Kennedy's work merged the gritty style of war comics with a knack for design that gave his work a dynamic - although grounded - simplicity. Now a resident of Orkney, Kennedy has struggled with his eyesight and has sadly had to give up professional work. In this interview, he talks about his career and the evolving challenges of being a comic book artist. This interview recording has been kindly provided by Mark Seddon, who run Cam's website www.kennywho.co.uk and art sales.
