In her blog, Yang's Nourishing Kitchen, she shares time-tested traditional wisdom from the east to the west, through nutrient-dense real food recipes. 3:00 As part of Chinese culture, food and medicine are integrated. 6:20 Yang became very sick and experienced widespread chronic pain. 9:20 She had various diagnostic tests run, tried various therapies, was misdiagnosed, and all the while, her condition was worsening. 14:20 Believing that recovery was possible was the first step to Yang healing from Fibromyalgia. Also, she felt she had to be willing to try an all-encompassing TCM approach to get well. 16:30 She shares what she has learned along the way in her blog, as a stepping stone for others on their healing path. 19:30 Detoxing her body with a liver flush routine is part of her health maintenance. 22:55 Healing takes time. It took Yang 5 years to feel fully recovered from her illness.  During the first two years, she followed a very strict TCM protocol. 24:30 If we can keep our health in check before it gets too out of balance, we will be much better off than if we let ourselves fall apart. 28:00 A TCM protocol that encouraged circulation, as opposed to the Western medicine protocol of icing, helped her pain. 32:00 Yang discusses some of her favorite recipes, including those that incorporate Chinese herbs. 38:00 Although she did write a vegan cookbook, to be supportive of that way of eating, she personally doesn't eliminate any food groups, focusing instead on overall nutrition. 43:00 She is grateful for the readers who have said her blog has given them hope for recovery from their chronic pain.   Connect with Yang: Instagram | Facebook | YouTube | Yang's Nourishing Kitchen  Resources mentioned by Yang: Fritillaria Steamed Pear Recipe Ginseng Chicken Soup Recipe How Yang beat severe chronic pain using traditional Chinese medicine Yang's experience with the amazing liver and gallbladder flush  How Yang's husband lowered bilirubin with liver detox How to do a liver flush for kids  Connect with Plum Dragon Herbs: YouTube |  Facebook | Instagram | Twitter  | LinkedIn  Try Plum Dragon Dit Da Jow: Dit Da Jow Collection Thank You For Listening! Chinese Medicine is a big umbrella term that encompasses not only acupuncture, but Chinese Herbal medicine, bodywork, lifestyle and diet counseling, and “energy exercise” like qi gong, tai chi and meditation. As practitioners of Chinese Medicine, once we make a diagnosis, any of these branches can be used to help restore the energy in the body.    Just like Chinese herbs, which are essentially very powerful food that you only a small quantity of to get a powerful effect, anything we put in our bodies can keep us alive, move us towards greater health and balance, or move us farther away from it. And since most people eat at least 3x/ day, that's multiple opportunities to keep steering in the direction of health.  Listen as Brodie and fellow Chinese Medicine expert Ellen Goldsmith, L.Ac., explore the dietary branch of Chinese Medicine. Ellen teaches on this very topic: Chinese Dietetics and its application in western society and in their Masters of Nutrition program and in the Classical Chinese Medicine Department at National University of Natural Medicine. She's a Licensed Acupuncturist has been in the field for over 25 years a recognized educator, health advocate, and practitioner of all the branches of Chinese medicine. Ellen Goldsmith is a co-founder of Pearl Natural Health in Portland, Oregon. She's also the creator and host of Health Currents Radio and co-host of Healthwatch on KBOO in Portland, Oregon.   In this episode we explore:  Intuitive eating  How Chinese Medicine conceives of food differently than the West  Yin and Yang as related to food and body type  Bioindividuality   Respecting the energy of digestion  Warming vs. Cooling foods  The importance of rhythm in our diets  Eating on the go vs. at the table  Trying new foods in new ways  Like increases like and what you're craving isn't necessarily what you need  Balanced taste = balanced meal    Resources:  Babette's Feast  Rouxbe Cooking School  http://www.cookwithwhatyouhave.com/  To contact Ellen, you can e-mail her at elleng@pearlnaturalhealth.com, on the Pearl Natural Health Facebook page, or on Twitter @goldsmith_ellen.   For more information on Chinese Medicine and to stay in touch with Brodie, visit brodiewelch.com. Sarica Cernohous is a licensed acupuncturist in Arizona and California, having attained her Master’s of Science degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in 2001. Her formal education encompassed not only acupuncture, but Chinese Herbal medicine, the unique and involved theoretical construct of Asian medicine, western biomedicine, and both western and eastern perspectives on nutrition. It was during this experience that she began to grasp a much deeper appreciation for the traditional ways of studying and implementing whole food nutrition. Some years into practicing, she came upon what for her would be a transformative book, “The Maker’s Diet” by Jordan Rubin. The information in the book—based upon the concept that we should eat foods more in alignment with the foods our ancestors consumed--became a catalyst for even greater change in her approach to nutrition, and her respect for the power it holds. She began to see her kitchen not as a place of sheer consumption, but rather, a venue for creation and study. Beginning with using alternatives to pasteurized cow’s milk, then moving into making yogurt and kefir, and next onto soaking and sprouting beans, her experiences in traditional methods sparked further questions and continued interest in their functionality. And this interest continues today! A member of the Weston A. Price Foundation and the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, she now teaches on these methods and the reasons for them. From fermentation and culturing, to low-heat dehydrating, to soaking and sprouting and the use of bone broths, her commitment and passionate respect for these methods have become a cornerstone of her practice. She uses these techniques daily in the care of her family, and is always building upon the knowledge she has gleaned both formally and on the counters of her kitchen, to push the envelop of understanding about the functionality of these techniques in our busy, modern lives. She shares many of her recipes and insights on her website, naturallylivingtoday.com.

This week we’re looking at COVID-19 and the state of the world through an Eastern medicine lens by talking to Acupuncturist, Chinese Herbalist, and Functional Medicine practitioner, Dr. Ryan Monahan! Dr. Monahan discusses the ways in which Eastern medicine takes a different approach to Western medicine by looking to nourish life, strengthen, and build (as opposed to Western approach looking for things to kill and destroy), how eastern and functional medicine practices don’t “treat” diseases but “treat” the person and how there isn’t a focus on fixing symptoms but getting to the root cause. However, he does note that both Western and Eastern medicine are useful especially when used in an integrated way. He explains COVID-19 through an Eastern Medicine perspective and gives specific Chinese Herbal formulas that he has been using to help treat patients and the formulas they’ve been using in China for COVID-19 specifically. But whats even more fascinating about this conversation, is how he explains the connection between us and nature and how stress (real or perceived) affects the body. Dr. Monahan touches on the chaos of our current world, but says that within chaos exists all possibilities. If you’re curious about alternative approach to medicine and want recommendations that YOU can do to help build you immune system and improve your digestion, this is the episode for you! ***We're offering ALL OUR CLASSES VIRTUALLY!
