Please welcome my good friend, Tania Teschke back to the show! Tania is the author of the book Bordeaux Kitchen, which by many accounts is the best book ever written in the ancestral health scene—it is an absolute encyclopedia of healthy living, French food, wine, and culture. She has studied under some of the finest chefs and sommeliers and brings you the full scoop in this episode with all kinds of tips about nutrition and health, including a discussion about the integral role animal organs have played in not just French cuisine, but in many different cuisines around the world. This show will inspire you to bring organ meats back to your routine dietary patterns, and we talk about the value of the cultural aspect of food in France, as well as the importance of being mindful of what you put on your skin and Tania’s wonderful product line, The Bordeaux Kitchen. I’ve been using her lip balm and deodorant for the last few years and they’re all fantastic. When you think of all the offensive chemicals in mainstream beauty and body products (especially the ones that contain endocrine disrupting chemicals), it’s such a relief to know that there are skincare and cosmetic products formulated with clean ingredients, that work well, and are easily available on Etsy. Whether you consider yourself a home chef or someone who's better off leaving the kitchen to others, this episode is for youIn this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, Jenn Trepeck sits down with Chef Whitney Aronoff, founder of High Vibration Foods, to explore how the food we choose influences our physical health and our emotional and spiritual balance. From selecting fresh, in-season ingredients to understanding the power of ancestral diets, Chef Aronoff shares her journey of holistic healing through understanding food. This conversation dives deep into the concept of high-vibration food—what it is, why it matters, and how you can incorporate it into your daily life. Jenn and Whitney discuss everything from food industry pitfalls and shopping for healthy ingredients to the benefits of soaking grains and investing in quality kitchen tools. Plus, Chef Aronoff reveals how simple changes in food preparation can enhance digestion and nutrient absorption. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Send us a Text Message. Can you imagine maintaining your health goals without giving up your favorite cultural dishes? Join us for an enlightening conversation with fellow dietitian John as we unpack the nutritional challenges faced by Hispanic and Filipino communities. We reveal how common dietary habits, such as frying foods and a love for carbs like rice and tortillas, can still fit into a balanced diet. Discover how respecting cultural traditions while promoting healthier eating habits can make a meaningful impact without the emotional and psychological burden of restrictive diets.Carbohydrates often get a bad rap, especially for those dealing with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, but do they need to be completely eliminated? John and I tackle this misconception head-on, explaining that staples like white rice can still be enjoyed in moderation. We dive into the nuances of tailoring carbohydrate intake to individual needs and debunk myths like the necessity of switching to brown rice. We also highlight the broader context of immigration and the accessibility of fast food in the U.S., factors that contribute significantly to weight gain among these communities. What strategies can help low literacy clients make better dietary choices without feeling overwhelmed? We discuss practical, culturally sensitive approaches that include reducing portion sizes and incorporating more vegetables into everyday meals. From adapting traditional dishes to sharing our personal journeys as dietitians, we provide actionable tips to help navigate social settings while maintaining healthy eating habits. Tune in to learn how small, gradual changes can lead to sustainable improvements in health without sacrificing the joy of cultural foods.John Canlas  Thank you for listening. Pomponius Mela, a Roman geographer, who hailed from the Roman province of Baetica (now Andalusia) in southern Spain writing in 43AD, he described the Ireland and Irish people as “a people wanting in every virtue, and totally destitute of piety”. And yet this country was so “luxuriant in grasses” that if cattle were “allowed to feed too long, they would burst”.Hello! The ancient Greek geographer and explorer Pytheas of Massalia while exploring north west Europe named the land of Ireland "Ierni" and from there Claudius Ptolemaeus ("Ptolemy") called the island Iouerníā . The Roman historian Tacitus, in his book Agricola (c. 98 AD), uses the name Hibernia. It meant "land of winter", and he modern name Eire derives from here.So today's episode, part 1, is all about the food history and food culture of ancient Ireland. I've talked with food historian Regina Sexton who is based in Cork to give me all the fascinating details of the rich ancient food history of Irish people.Regina Sexton is a food and culinary historian, food writer, broadcaster and cook. Before contact, Indigenous people made their own types of bannock and breads using camas bulbs, lichen, moss, cattails, roasted acorns and other plants and roots that were Indigenous to their traditional territories. After contact, Indigenous people began to use wheat and oat flour brought over by the Scottish during the fur trade. Flour was a non-Indigenous food but soon became the staple ingredient in bannock, and in the lives of Indigenous people.” https://martlet.ca/bannock-consuming-colonialism/   Colonialism “Colonialism has been defined as systems and practices that ‘seek to impose the will of one people on another and to use the resources of the imposed people for the benefit of the imposer' (Assante, 2006). Colonialism can operate within political, sociological, cultural values and systems of a place even after occupation by colonizers has ended. Colonization is defined as the act of political, physical and intellectual occupation of space by the (often forceful) displacement of Indigenous populations, and gives rise to settler-colonialism, colonial and neo-colonial relations, and coloniality.” https://www.yorku.ca/edu/unleading/systems-of-oppression/coloniality-and-settler-colonialism/   Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt A symbol and reminder of covenants between the 5 Nations of the Haudenosaunee and the Dutch Government that guided later treaty-building and envisaged a relationship of reciprocity and sharing (that all people sharing a territory should leave enough for others), a promise that many Indigenous people feel was broken many times. https://futurecitiescanada.ca/portal/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/02/fcc-civic-indigenous-tool3-teaching-twodishonespoon.pdf   Foodways A term to describe peoples' cultural, social and economic food practices, habits and desires (Alkon et al.) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0016718513000936   Kanyen'kehà:ka Mohawk language. https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/mohawk   Sky Woman The story of how Sky Woman fell from Skyworld to start life on Turtle Island, passed down and told by different Iroquoian-speaking people to describe the creation of human life on earth but also telling aspects of the Original Instructions guiding relations between humans and the natural world (Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass). https://www.robinwallkimmerer.com/ Discussion Questions  1.     In what ways might Indigenous people have a complicated relationship with bannock? How does this story compare to other human origin stories- what are the implications for the way we think about food and food systems? 4.     How do we make sense of, respect, and value traditional Indigenous diets and contemporary foodways today? How do we bring together understanding, and respect, and desire to keep alive traditions and ancestral foods in the contemporary post-colonial world?   5. How does the term ‘foodways' differ from ‘food systems' in communicating peoples' relationship with food?

Hey Friend It is starting to warm up here at the time of this recording, but even though it has been cold, I have had so much incredible time with friends crafting for 4 days and then another weekend time with friends that I don't see very often and another weekend at a Womens leadership retreat, we have been ice fishing and my family has caught a bunch of fish, so even when it is cold, we still gather and have quality time with people we love-even though it may not be outside!   Today I want to talk about the simple foods we eat.  I no longer eat for what my body looks like, but for my metabolic health and to heal my body from the inside out.  I have talked on here about how over the years up until 3 years ago,  I have tried every diet there was including keto, paleo, vegan, and the list goes on and on, but when I had an abnormal EKG after doing Keto and then getting my body age, I realized that I needed to quit worrying about weight and worry more about health, so after doing alot of research,i realized that  auto-immune disorders and our health problems come down to mostly what we eat.  I knew that even though our soil is so depleted that we won't benefit from all the nutrients our ancestors did, if we get closer to a nourishing ancestral diet with nutrient dense foods, we will be much healthier.   I had some testing done and I found out I had food allergies to milk, wheat, tomatoes, tuna, kidney beans, kale, and 10 other items, so when I started cooking from scratch with whole food ingredients, I noticed a huge difference in my gut health. I can't wait to retest and see how many of these food allergies are gone.  Since switching so much of what we eat, my family has become even healthier and it has saved thousands of dollars making it ourselves and growing the food.  We buy organic whenever possible if we aren't growing it as we are more aware of pesticides and also our gut health has improved immensly.    My list of nutrient-dense foods that we typically eat daily does not include a bunch of random super-foods that are expensive and hard to find. My diet has shifted to eating more Traditional Foods….or as I like to call it, following an Ancestral or Primal diet. Eating the way my ancestors have eaten for thousands of years.  Traditional foods are the types of nutrient dense foods I now focus on for our whole family.   These foods are for anyone, at any stage in life. They're rich in nutrients that your body needs to thrive.   Nutrient Dense foods we eat every day   Eggs from our chickens Raw Cheese Fermented Veggies Fruit Raw Milk Butter Animal Protein   It sure makes a difference in how we feel.  We still eat our fruit and veggie tablets daily, but that is because we couldn't possibly get 30 different kinds of fruits and vegetables every day and those have kept our whole family free from sickness for over 3 years now.  I will put the link below if you are interested! When you nourish your body with the right foods, you will feel  AND LOOK  your best!!! If you want to be part of our community of like minded women that want to learn more about making simple traditional nutrient dense foods, join our group-the link is below in the description!!   And if you are enjoying this podcast, please share it with a friend and as always, feel free to send me an emaili with any questions or things you would like to simplify~I seriously LOVE hearing from you!   Join our Community of Christian Moms -> https://www.facebook.com/groups/claimingsimplicity/ Email -> monica@claimingsimplicity.com Instagram -> https://www.instagram.com/claimingsimplicity/ You Tube -> https://www.youtube.com/@claimingsimplicity/  Fruits & Veggies -> https://www.monicabaker.juiceplus.com/ God Bless! Dani from @nourishwithdani is a Nutritional Therapist Practitioner and Certified Health Coach from London who supports women all over the world to get back to a healthier, happier place through uncovering their own unique health history.  She's passionate about nutrition optimisation, gut-health, anti-stress habits and helping you create an environment for your body to heal itself. At only 21 years young and just starting to kick-start her career in London, Dani became chronically ill with digestive issues, particularly "Achalasia", a rare oesophageal disorder. She couldn't eat or swallow, was starting to "waste away", and suffered from major health anxiety. After searching for a cure, she was devastated to be told by Doctor's that all she could do was "take some pills and maybe get an operation". This was hard to fathom and after not getting the results she wanted, she went out to find answers herself.Dani decided she would try veganism, and transitioned overnight after watching testimonials on YouTube from others who had healed their health issues with this lifestyle. She needed the drastic change to get out of her situation and like felt veganism was the answer as it gave her hope, which she knew was critical in these dire straits. After moving countries and starting a new career, Dani soon noticed that her health was suffering and was no long thriving on a vegan diet despite doing "everything right" and taking "all the supplements". She also fell into a dark place with her "new-age spirituality" practices that she was doing in order to "heal".It wasn't until finding God again and reconnecting with her Christian faith that she finally could start to heal, truly. Dani could let go of the guilt and shame she felt and started to learn more about nutrition, eating more in a traditional and ancestral way, and all in God's design. She now sees food so differently, and is more connected to herself and nature. Dani ends the episode with her best nutrition tip! Be sure to listen in on this one, whether you're vegan or not, or whether you have been wanting to transition away from veganism, this is for you!A follow up episode with Dani will be  COMING SOON on all things nutrition and how to transition back to animal based foods with confidence and without shame. When diseases affect our wildlife, they can also impact the health of domestic animals and humans. Diseases may "spillover" from wildlife to other species, can be maintained in nature, develop new and more potent strains, and can travel across provincial, territorial, and national borders, often unimpeded. Increasing stresses due to habitat loss, international trade of animals and their parts, climate change, or any of the artificial constructs our human society creates – compound the health challenges faced by the wildlife species we share this planet with. Veterinarians and wildlife biologists work together to study, monitor, learn from, and support our wildlife populations. Dr. Iga Stasiak is a veterinarian working as a wildlife health specialist in for the Ministry of the Environment in Saskatchewan. Many times, being a dietitian is a lot like being a detective. Patients come to us after having tried everything else that they can think of. After years of dieting and frustration, they still have a gut in distress. Often, it’s a modern lifestyle and diet behind the problem. Today, I’m talking with Laura Poe Mathes about how she helps her clients discover healing remedies by taking advantage of traditional foods.   About Laura Poe Mathes Laura is a registered dietitian focused on helping clients restore their microbiome and heal their gut. Her process is based on principles of traditional diets, where natural remedies meet evidence-based practices to help improve gut health. Laura's goal is not only to improve her clients' diets but also to help them change their lives.   A New Look at Old Foods Rather than focusing on elimination diets, Laura helps her clients identify what they are missing so they can get to the root cause of the problem. What’s interesting is that many traditional foods, like broths, fermented foods, and organ meats can help fill common nutritional gaps.  Because food is one of the things in life that can’t be ignored, it’s still something that can make or break your wellbeing. With that in mind, Laura explains how a smart approach to eating traditional foods can flip your relationship with food upside down. If done right, you can find yourself excited to eat again.   Work With Your Dietitian to Build Your Traditional Diet When it comes to improving gut health, Laura can’t speak highly enough about fermented foods in particular. She has seen so many people improve their symptoms and overall nutritional status by adding more foods like sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, and kimchi to their diet.  However, fermented foods on their own are not going to be the solution. Borths, stocks, and organ meats can all be part of the picture. With so many elements and variables, there’s a lot to consider. That’s why having a knowledgeable dietitian on your side is so helpful. Laura explains what to look for when considering a traditional solution to your gut issues so that you and your dietitian can find a real fix that lasts. What’s your favorite traditional food? We explore her offering of a Vision Mushroom Practicum audio course and it's implications for the future of magic mushroom research, clinical healing practices, solo and group rituals/ceremonies, and much more.
