The occasion of Paul's opening remarks in I Cor chapters 1-4 came by way of distorted views of the nature of the church and her leadership. Many in Corinth had a corrupted view of the identity of church influencers and the relationship between these men and the church generally speaking. In writing to correct these errors, Paul is provided opportunity to expound and apply elements of the Gospel that will address these challenges and many others that may present themselves. In the providence of God, we can be thankful for problems arising in the early church which redound to our benefit as we eavesdrop on practical instruction underscored by apostolic authority. In chapter 4, Paul gives his closing arguments on the issue of membership/leadership church relationships before moving on to address other matters of concern in his letter.

Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney  ...    Doctrines of Christ:   I Corinthians 10   16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?   17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.   (Bread is food.  The food from God is the Word of God which we eat and drink, doing that word of God which comes down from heaven.)   18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?   19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?   20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.   21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.   We put our trust in God.  We go to dinner with Gentiles and they raise their drink glass to their gods and click their glasses together "for luck".   When I am at their table, I don't make any effort to raise my glass to their wishes.  They see me just sit there and they know I do not wish to participate with them and they ignore me and go on with their good luck wish and click their glasses together worshiping the "god" , but I don't join them.   In the USA, there is a "saying" that for good luck you eat black eyed peas on New Years Day.   I want my "luck" to come from God.  I do not seek luck from things I eat on a feast day.  So I do not join them in this pagan thinking.   At many Christian churches, they have what they call "communion" which is eating a piece of cracker and drinking some grape juice.  But I know the Lord's Supper, the communion with God, is the eating and drinking of the Word of God and has nothing to do with crackers and grape juice.   I do not participate in eating of crackers and drinking of grape juice at a church service, because I know this is not the Lord's Supper but is a tradition set up by men and has no real power of God.   The proper eating and drinking of the Word of God is eating the food God provides for the church, the WORD, and has great power.   I Corinthians 11   18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.   19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.   20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.   21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.   22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.   23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which HE was betrayed took bread:   24 And when HE had given thanks, HE brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is MY body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of ME.   25 After the same manner also HE took the cup, when HE had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in MY blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.   (Jesus is speaking of the bread that comes from God, the word of God during the gathering of the church.  And Jesus speaks of the New Testament in HIS blood, the Word of God that comes from God, the New Testament for the New Testament church.  We examine ourselves to see how we are partaking of HIS Word.  And by the Word HE gives us we examine the way we are going on this earth and make proper corrections as needed.)   26 For as often as ye eat this bread (the word), and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till HE come.   27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread (the word), and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.   28 But let a man examine himself (by the Word), and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup (examining himself by the Word).   29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.   (For example:  We read, "Flee fornication,"  I Cor. 6:18  And some go out and commit fornication, "eating the word unworthily" and they bring upon themselves damnation by wrongfully eating and drinking the Word of God.)   30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep (die).   31 For if we would judge ourselves (by the Word of God), we should not be judged.   32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.   33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.   (Be patient for one another for someone may need to hear that word while you have heard that word many times.  Be patient in repetitions, "tarry one for another.")

On this podcast of Sonshine USA our Bible study teacher Warren Landis expounds from I Corinthians Chapter 8. Here we study about the importance of maturing in Christ! In Paul's day, eating meat that had first been offered to idols was a big deal. Paul personally saw nothing wrong with eating meat that had been first offered to idols because idols don't really exist We as Christians worship and serve the one true and loving God! But, Paul said he would give up his right to eat meat if it would cause a weaker brother or sister in Christ to stumble. Mature Christians focus on God! Legalistic Christians focus on what others think. The way to mature in Christ is to spend more time in a DEEPER study of God's Word, which is what Sonshine USA is all about! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/warren-landis4/support

Section II: God We believe in one triune God, existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory, Who possess the same attributes and perfections yet carry out distinct offices (Deuteronomy 6:4, II Corinthians 13:14, I Peter 1:2, Matthew 28:19). We believe that God the Father is the absolute omnipotent ruler of the universe, sovereign in creation, providence, and redemption, a perfect Spirit in Whom is perfect holiness, and infinite wisdom (Psalm 99:6; 103:19, 139:7-12, 147:5, Isaiah 44:24, Malachi 3:6, Matthew 7:7-8, John 4:24, I John 4:8, Romans 11:36). We believe that Jesus Christ is the divine (John 1:1, 10:30, 38, Colossians 2:9), eternal (John 1:2), Son of God (Matthew 3:17, 8:29, 11:27, 16:16, 17:5, Mark 1:1, I John 5:9-12), that He was miraculously conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:18-23, Luke 1:34-35, Galatians 4:4), that He perfectly revealed and accomplished the will of God, taking upon Himself the demands and necessities of human nature (Philippians 2:5-8); that He identified Himself completely with mankind (John 1:14, Romans 1:3-4) yet was and remains without sin (I Peter 2:21-23, Hebrews 4:15), that He literally and vicariously died, was buried and raised from the dead (Romans 6:4, 9, I Corinthians 15:4, 20, I Thessalonians 1:10), and that He ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9), and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Romans 8:34, Hebrews 9:24, I John 2:1-2). We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, that He convicts the world of sin (John 16:8-11), helps (John 14:16-17, 26) and baptizes all believers into the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-14). We believe that He is the divine Teacher (John 14:26, I John 2:27) who guides believers into truth (John 16:13), and that it is the privilege and duty of all the saved to be filled and controlled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18, I John 2:20). PURPOSE: A Doctrinal Series for Heritage Bible Chapel's Sunday School, under the premise that it is vital to review and teach through our Statement of Faith (Doctrine Essentials) with some regularity to avoid “theological amnesia and spiritual myopia.” The subjects are taught using a scripture-first approach to feature highlights of our confession in a 30-minute teaching setting. Teachers are encouraged to focus on main points, work in discussion and application as appropriate, and supplement with HBC's Constitution, church history, and other resources. Care must be given to isolate the main points due to time constraints. LOCATION & TIME: This class will be located in the Sanctuary. Attendees are encouraged to begin arriving at 9:00 a.m. Teaching will start by 9:10 a.m.

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked (Galatians 6:7).” Scripture calls us to examine ourselves before we receive the body and blood of Christ (I Corinthians 11:28). Understanding the serious of our sin and the need for repentance, Luther gave catechumens and all Christians a list of questions to help us examine our faith, trusting in His grace by the blood of Christ. These questions are a blessing not only to those receiving the sacrament for the first time, but also for us every time we come before His Altar. “Just as I am without one plea; But that Thy blood was shed for me; And that Thou bidst me come to Thee; O Lamb of God, I come, I come.” LSB 570. "Most people perceive Jesus Christ as a passive personality. But a closer look reveals His life example and teachings to be assertive. With reference to the “Passive-Assertive-Aggressive” continuum and chart on page 2, the person of Jesus is centered and balanced in the assertive realm. Indeed; if the core intent of assertiveness is “to communicate”, then Jesus truly is the Teacher. For the Christian this difference; Jesus being an assertive person rather than passive, is of the utmost importance. This is particularly true when successful, permanent behavioral modification is necessary. As the Apostle Paul commands: “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ” (I Corinthians 11:1). The depth of this imitation is described in a letter by Paul: “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life that I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God...” (Galatians 2:20). For the Christian, self is put to death so the character of Christ can be developed in the individual. In another passage the Scripture speaks of God's pre-determined purpose for the believer “to become conformed to the image of His Son” (Romans 8:29). Therefore, the goal and orientation of the follower of Christ would be to strive toward an assertive, rather than a passive (or aggressive), life style as his behavioral norm. Assertiveness Passive Assertive Aggressive Consider the following chart Nonassertive Assertive Aggressive Characteristics of the behavior Does not express wants, Ideas and feelings, or Expresses them in self-deprecating way. Intent: to please. Expresses wants, ideas, and feelings in direct and appropriate ways. Intent: to communicate Expresses wants, ideas and feelings at the expense of others. Intent: to dominate or humiliate Your feelings when you act this way Anxious; disappointed with yourself. Often angry and resentful later. Confident; You feel good about yourself at the time and later. Self-righteous; superior. Sometimes embarrassed later. Other people's feelings about themselves when you act this way. Guilty or superior Respected, valued Humiliated, hurt Other people's feelings about you when you act this way. Irritation, pity, disgust. Usually respect. Anger vengefulness. Outcome Don't get what you want; anger builds up. Often get what you want. Often get what you want at the expense of others. Others feel justified in “getting even” Payoff Avoids unpleasant situation, conflict, tension, confrontation. Feels good; respected by others; improved self-confidence; relationships are improved. Vents anger; feels superior." Who is the Builder of your house? Are you relying on your own wisdom, understanding, and knowledge to build it? Is its foundation something solid, or shifting and sinking sand? Who is your architect, designer, and craftsman? God is the source of all wisdom, and wisdom comes through knowing God. Notice I didn’t say knowledge about God. Knowing God comes through time spent in connection and communication with Him, just like you come to know a new friend or build an intimate relationship. Reverence for the Lord is the natural outflow of knowing God and another source of wisdom. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10). Reverence for God is recognizing God’s holiness, and responding with appropriate humility and awe in His presence. As Proverbs 22:4 states, “Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” God offers to build our house with beautiful materials – love, holiness, reverence, humility, honor, wisdom – the stuff of His Kingdom, making us a lovely dwelling place for His Spirit. But we have a choice. We can choose instead to build our house with the stuff of the world. Paul draws a sharp contrast between the so-called wisdom of the world and God’s wisdom, saying, “God made foolish the wisdom of the world” (I Corinthians 1:20), and, “Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become ‘fools’ so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight” (I Corinthians 3:18-19). For Paul, the only true wisdom is belonging wholly and completely to Christ (I Corinthians 3:23).Read the full devotion at https://devotableapp.com/daily-devotion-proverbs-24-3-4-wisdom-of-god

The Crowd on the day of Pentecost were perplexed when they heard the 120 (Spirit Filled) Disciples praising God in the Languages of the foreigners visiting in Jerusalem for the feast. Holy Spirit had not only filled the town with the sound of a Hurricane or Tornado, Sent Tongues of Fire from heaven upon the believers in the upper room, but now He had given them the foreign languages of men and Angels with which to glorify and worship Jesus. The promise of the Father that Jesus had told His disciples about, would be poured out on those who waited and tarried until they would receive the Holy Spirit into their lives in Pentecostal Fulness. Jesus had told them that the Spirit that had empowered them to witness and serve the King, would not only be "with" them, but would be "in" them. There was definitely an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that John said Jesus would bring upon all who believed. This outward (with) baptism/anointing, would come into them and "fill" them with His Presence. From that moment on, the Pentecostal Experience would no longer be called just an anointing or Baptism, but would be referred to as the Infilling of the Holy Spirit. 33 years after this day of Pentecostal outpouring, Paul would ask the Christians in Ephesus if they had RECEIVED (in not on) the Holy Spirit since they believed. Their answer was that they had not even heard about the Holy Spirit. However we know that they could not have even been saved unless the Holy Spirit had baptized them into the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:13). The anointing of the Holy Spirit, the "with" of the Holy Spirit, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is present for every one who comes into the body of Christ. However the Holy Spirit that was "With" them had not come "into" them until Paul explained, laid hands on them and they were "received" and were "filled" with the Spirit and began to speak with Other Tongues just as on the day of Pentecost, just as had happened in Samaria, when Simon the sorcerer tried to buy this Matter/"Logos" (speaking in other tongues) that was evidenced when the believers were filled, or just as it was in Cornelius' home when the disciples heard them all speaking in tongues as Peter preached about Jesus. In every case in Acts, when believers were baptized or anointed with Holy Spirit and they "received/ were filled" with the Spirit, they all spoke with Tongues as the Spirit gave them the utterance. This sermon is a celebration of this initial gift of Glossolalia (praying, worshiping, singing, speaking in tongues). Why does this seemingly strange gift hold such importance and how do we receive or become filled with Holy Spirit?

This week we launch our new series: Love Letters. This weeks message is titled "United in Christ.” Begin in chapter one verse 10 Paul gets to the heart of the issue to this and every church when he asks the question, Is Christ divided? The reader must realize that, if we are in Christ, then we cannot live or act like there are divisions between those of us who are called by His name. This is a challenging true and we are going to explore its meaning together.

One of the biggest challenges in identifying goals for combatting the effects of codependency is to be active without accepting false guilt or distorting how you allocate responsibility for change again. It is easy to think if there is something I can do that would be more effective than what I have been doing, then if I had been doing it all along everything would be fine. In order to help you avoid this mindset, we will order the strategies for relating more healthily in a progression that builds from intrapersonal strategies (inside of you) to interpersonal strategies (between you and the other person). The intent is to reinforce the idea that you can get healthier even if the other person does not and that their possible resistance to change does not have to be interpreted as your personal failure. Gaining PerspectiveBuilding Resilience Alleviating Emotional TriggersGrowing Positive Influence As you learn from and practice each strategy, pray that God will use it for restorative purposes in the life of your loved one. Ask God to soften their heart towards their need to change and provide them the courage to vocalize their need to change. But, just as fervently, pray that God will give you the strength to continue on your journey towards healthier relational patterns whether your loved one is cooperative or not. If distance is created by your healthier choices, that is not “turning your back” or “leaving them behind.” Instead, it is you removing your cooperation with their dysfunction and pioneering a healthier life as an invitation for them to follow your example as you follow the example of Christ (I Corinthians 11:1). Note: The relational restoration methods advised in this step presume that safety has been restored to the relationship. Until your loved one has taken the steps to acknowledge their destructive patterns and evidence change, then you should (a) only seek to implement those components of this chapter that pertain to your personal-emotional well-being, or (b) apply the interpersonal strategies to relationships that were unduly harmed by the mistrust developed because of your abusive-addictive relationship. Until safety is honored, then restoration is not wise or possible. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Christ, the second Adam, came to restore all that was lost in the first Adam's disobedience. Often, the Gospel is limited to saving souls. Christ came to redeem the whole created order. The disobedience of the first Adam introduced the curse of death throughout God's good creation. Since through Christ, all things were made, in Christ all things shall be restored (healed). Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit and power and “went about doing good, and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him” (Acts 10:38). He announced his ministry as the coming of God's Kingdom. "But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you" (Matthew 12:28). The Kingdom of God on earth is currently considered "already – not-yet" until the final coming of Christ (I Corinthians 15:27). The Kingdom of God, says Jesus, suffers violence and forceful ones lay hold of it (Matthew 11:12). We do this by living in Christ, through prayer, fasting and advancing the Gospel amid adversity. Jesus himself modeled this and told his disciples that some strongholds won’t move apart from prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21).

Who am I? Brent Phillips – Encounter Houston How many of us are living in a constant state of spiritual amnesia? We go to church on Sunday and the next day we have already forgotten who we are. As long as we continue to forget who we are we will constantly be robbed of the things that we are suppose to have. If you don’t know who you are, you open yourself up to the danger of allowing other people to tell you who are. If you don’t know what you’re supposed to be doing you are in danger of allowing others to tell you what is that you’re suppose to be doing, and chances are it wont be the direction that you are to be going. John 16:7-11 "Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged." The Holy Spirit’s job in us is to do what Jesus did with his disciples while on earth. The Holy Spirit lives inside of us to tell us who we are, and what it is that we are supposed to be doing. You should never come away reading the word of God feeling condemned. If you are having a moment of condemnation then you can guarantee that is it is the voice of the enemy. Romans 8:1 "So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus." It is he enemy who is wanting to condemn us. There is no condemnation for those in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit’s job is to remind us that there is no condemnation once we are in Christ. Galatians 5:1 and 7 "So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. 7 You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth?" Christ has set us free, but it is possible for us to get tangled up in the law by trying to do everything right by ourselves. Listen to The Holy Spirit as he calls out the righteousness we have through Jesus Christ. Stop allowing the enemies voice to count you out; Keep on running the race because it is in our weaknesses that Christ is made strong.
