Ep 133. In today's solo episode, I'm breaking down how I went from relying on cannabis daily for just shy of 10 years, to giving it up almost entirely. I'm discussing the two questions I had to ask myself to start this journey: who am I when everything else is stripped away (and what am I willing to do to meet her), and who am I when I let the pain I'm avoiding change me? I'll be sharing the pros and cons – including the way this plant initially supported me, the confusion between its role in stress relief and helping us put off changing stressful conditions, tools I used during the quitting period, Traditional Chinese Medicine's view of habitual use, why this plant helps us to access our creativity, and how to believe that you can still be creative without it. Lastly, I'm sharing my relationship with the plant today and whether or not it still has a place in my life. HERE'S THE JUICE Olivia's personal journey with cannabis from day one through her decade-long reliance, all the way to making her decision to quit How the nature of cannabis is dissociative, which can be beneficial for certain conditions with a fine line of becoming maladaptive Why a desire to use cannabis or any other substance is really your nervous system seeking safety and how to have immense compassion for yourself How cannabis can become a crutch for socializing and connecting with people Traditional Chinese Medicine's interesting take on cannabis use Olivia's top tools for quitting cannabis and how to navigate withdrawal symptoms Why your “addictive personality” may actually be an element of your giftedness Watch the full episode on What's The Juice YouTube Channel To support our ad-free show, shop Olivia's line of herbalist-formulated supplements for digestion, anxiety, thyroid support, and more by visiting www.organicolivia.com. Hank Azaria is used to putting on other personalities. You probably know him best from his work as a voice actor on “The Simpsons,” where he plays Moe the bartender, Professor Frink, Chief Wiggum and Snake Jailbird, among many others. His list of credits in stage plays, movies and TV shows is prolific, including roles like his Tony-nominated performance in “Spamalot,” Phoebe's boyfriend on “Friends” and the dog walker on “Mad About You.” But at a certain point in his life, Azaria realized that he was using humor and acting to be anyone but himself, and that it was affecting his real-life relationships. After five devastating heartbreaks, he resolved to look inward, address his codependency issues and become his most authentic self.In this episode, Azaria tells us how he found authenticity and reads the Modern Love essay “In Defense of My Emu Tattoo,” about an author who masks his true self by using humor but eventually finds love by learning to be himself. How to submit a Modern Love Essay to The New York TimesHow to submit a Tiny Love Story Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. Ever wonder why some people who seem highly capable and successful still struggle with people-pleasing and relationship dynamics? This episode features a powerful conversation with psychotherapist Terri Cole where we unravel the hidden patterns of high-functioning codependency — a form of codependency that often goes unrecognized, especially in high-achievers. Have you ever found yourself constantly prioritizing the needs of others while neglecting your own? Do you get anxious when those you care about are anxious or angry? Do you find arguments leave you contorted, desperately seeking forgiveness and acceptance from your partner? If this sounds like you or someone you love, its time to confront the possibility that you may be trapped in the clutches of codependency. This Language of Love Bite, I dive into the complex world of codependency, its roots, its effects on our relationships, and the path to healing. The origin of codependency can be traced back to traumatic childhood experiences, such as being raised by an addict, a narcissist, or enduring emotional or physical abuse. These early life challenges often lead to "parentification," where children assume the emotional and sometimes physical responsibilities of caring for their parents, setting the stage for codependent behaviors later in life. Despite the challenges, I acknowledge the positive aspects of codependency, such as the innate desire to give and receive love. Join me in exploring these insights further and taking the steps toward healing and growth. In this Bite, I explain: Codependency as an addiction and a lifetime of recovery The role of traumatic childhood experiences in developing codependency Codependents' fear of abandonment and susceptibility to toxic partners The struggle to discern authentic love from manipulation The positive and manipulative elements of codependency How to heal from codependency through inner child work and setting boundaries The challenges codependents may face when setting boundaries and standing up for themselves Remember, if you're looking to enhance both your love life and sex life, whether you're in a relationship or not, I highly recommend checking out my free course on Quantum Sex. Additionally, if you're seeking to break free from codependency, there are some valuable resources I suggest exploring. Co-dependents Anonymous is a great program that can provide the guidance you need. Another excellent resource is Melodie Beattie's influential book, "Codependent No More." These resources can offer invaluable insights and support on your journey towards personal growth and independence. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We all have the desire to be needed and in many ways we need each other for our comfort and survival but all too often we cross the line of being emotionally dependent on others in a way that is detrimental to all involved. This is a common occurrence with mothers in relation to their children. Coach Jane Copier is a coach who works with midlife moms and something that she sees a lot in her practice is women who have a codependency on their children for their own happiness. These moms find that they can only be happy if their children are happy. Jane is on the podcast today talking about why this is not healthy for either the mother or the child and how a mother can truly break free of relying on her children for her emotional state and well being. This is a great episode and one that every mother needs to listen to if they feel that they do not have a healthy relationship when it comes to their emotions and their children's emotions. Learning to be free of emotional codependency is a great gift you can give yourself and your children so please listen to this episode and then reach out to Jane and have her help you start living an emotionally independent life. What does it feel like to be coming from love rather than fear in our lives? A key component of the Divine Feminine is having an open heart and coming from love (our true nature) in everything we do. This is a practice that is especially important when it comes to dating and meeting potential partners because if we allow ourselves to be in a loving state, we can know how we're actually feeling about this person rather than being hijacked by our ego and past trauma. Yet...what does that it even look like to come from love? And how can we begin to work with and practice coming from love? On this Divine Feminine solo episode I offer some simple steps to begin noticing the moments when it would be beneficial to try coming from a place of love. I also share how you can identify by checking in with how you feel in your body as to whether you're in a place of love or a place of fear. Why is self care so hard? Welp. We're breaking it down with the amazing past guest Victoria Albina. This conversation previously aired in September of 2021 and I was so moved by the important lessons Victoria shared that I wanted to air it again. Victoria Albina is a Certified Life Coach, UCSF-trained Family Nurse Practitioner and Breathwork Meditation Guide. She has a passion for helping women realize that they are their own best healers, so they can break free from codependency, perfectionism and people-pleasing and reclaim their joy.Oftentimes we think of codependency in relationships or substances, but it can often be so much deeper - from people pleasing, to lack of boundaries, to reactivity, and more, codependency can show up in many different ways. In this episode we discuss why self-care can be so challenging for women (hello, patriarchy), why we need to accept and name our neediness, the biology and science of our nervous system and how it plays into our thought process and codependency traits, sourcing worth internally, having awareness, accepting, and taking action, and so much more. Ever been in a lopsided relationship where you were giving and giving, and lost track of who you are and what you want out of life? If so, you may be caught in a codependent relationship. Codependency is a spectrum of behaviors that can exist in any type of relationship. It happens when one person is overly focused on another person's feelings, needs and problems, and even taking responsibility for things they have no control over. If this sounds like you, how can you untangle yourself from this pattern of behavior? Dr. Sharon Martin, a licensed psychotherapist specializing in codependency for 25 years, and helps people pleasers and perfectionists overcome self-doubt, shame, embrace their imperfections, and learn to set boundaries. Dr. Martin is the author of two books and writes the popular blog Conquering Codependency for Psychology Today. In this episode, Dr. Martin defines codependency, where it comes from, and how it can be normalized in women. She walks us through what happens when we try to people please and lack boundaries. Finally, she discusses how to recognize warning signs that you may be codependent and the first steps to changing your behavior.

NEW YEAR NEW US...? In this week's solo episode, we dive into our New Year's resolution, and the topic of codependency and how it has been impacting our relationships. We discuss the importance of setting boundaries and not taking on the emotions of others and having to be in control at all times. We explore the definition of codependency and how it shows up like having a hard time just saying "no" and putting others' needs before our own. We also touch on the ways in which codependency can manifest in different types of relationships, including romantic partnerships, friendships, and family. We share some of our own personal experiences with codependency and caretaking and how we are working on overcoming it in 2023. By sharing our stories, we hope to encourage listeners to reflect on their own relationships and start taking steps toward a more healthy and happier YOU.Link for Alli's lightbulbs: https://a.co/d/bHQXUWj Link for "Codependent No More"
When we are born into a family of dysfunction, we find a way to function. We develop a way of being that allows us to survive, thrive, connect, or cope. I call these Attachment Personality Patterns (APPS). Today, we are discussing the APP of the Withholder. It is not my intention to diagnose you. I am simply giving you a framework to identify patterns of codependency behavior so that you can break free from these self-destructive patterns and in turn, create the loving, mutually beneficial, healthy relationships you deserve. That being said, there are 5 key indicators of a Withholder. Although there are certainly more than 5 ways this shows up, I find these 5 to be prevalent in most Withholding Types. You do not need to identify with all 5 to type as a withholder. You may simply identify strongly with 1 or 2 key indicators. The important thing is that we cultivate awareness around how withholding shows up in your relationships and sabotages your connections with others. With that awareness, you will be well on your way to breaking free from this Pattern. Patterns are not pathological. And they are not fixed. You also may identify with more than one Personality Pattern. The important thing to know is that you can change your Attachment Personality Pattern at any time simply by deciding to begin your codependency recovery journey. Watch the video to learn the key indicators. Now that I've identified the 5 key indicators, I want to discuss the point of origin for this Attachment Personality Pattern. Likely, you were born into a family that was dysfunctional in some way whether it is abusive, alcoholic, or addicted. The main theme was uncertainty, unreliability, and unpredictability. You wanted the love of your primary caregiver(s) but found that loving them meant you got hurt in some way. So while you longed for the closeness intimacy could provide, you simultaneously feared it. You inevitably ended up abandoned, rejected, or hurt. So today, one of the core internal battles a withholder faces is the deep need for intimacy and the simultaneous fear it will destroy her/him. Withholders don't necessarily fear abandonment because their strategy is to never get too close to anyone in the first place so it won't hurt when /if they do leave. They believe that by keeping their distance, they won't love too much. Meaning, if they did allow themselves to get fully vested in someone, the pain of their inevitable betrayal would be too much to bear. So they maintain distance to avoid feeling too vested. What is the path to recovery for a withholder? If you recognize that you fit this pattern, the work begins with your recovery journey. That's why I created LYFE School which stands for Love Yourself First Empowerment. In LYFE School, I teach the 7 tenets to overcome all codependent Attachment Personality Patterns. You learn to speak your truth and share your authentic self with those you love. You learn to open up and allow others to love you the way you want to be loved. You work through the old programming and fears that have kept you from truly connecting with others. If you are interested in LYFE School you can find more out at www.LoveCoachHeidi.Com Love, Coach Heidi
In this session, we are talking about the themes of November and how Codependency shows up in our lives. Whether we have it in relationships or with social media codependency can creep in without us even knowing it's there. Many individuals who have trauma in their lives or have lived in homes with substance abuse, fighting, divorce, or violence can develop codependency. I talk about identifying codependency, and its characteristics, as well as tools and ways to break codependency. I also give some ways you can use self-care to combat codependency.
